Question about Cathe Beginning Step Vs. Firm

My sister is looking for a starting exercise program - something she can do at home about 3 days a week and is fairly well rounded. She doesn't really need to lose weight, but she does need to tone. A friend told her about The Firm. She called me to ask me about it while she was at Target, and I told her I've heard good things. But they did not have the set at that Target. However, they did have Cathe's set. She ended up getting that one. I'm more familar with what Cathe offers - and it's a pretty good deal. But I know she's looking for a no-brainer program and the The Firm has a 3 day a week schedule. Is anyone familar with both sets to be able to give me an opinion about which one she should go with?

Hi there,
I've done both the Firm and Cathe's beginner ones that I believe come with that box at Target. The Firm basically got me motivated and thinner and at the same time created some muscle mass.I loved that fanny lifter (same as high step)...because I really saw results quick. (Later got my but kicked up a notch with HSC...whoa baby blew the firm away)
I was a long time step addict so well versed in step. I really think the Firm is a good place to start and then to advance on to Cathe. But, at the same time I feel that starting with Cathe's basic step and body fusion is a great starting point if coming from ground zero. Body fusion I found too easy after the firm. I started with it about 2 months ago and moved quickly onto lomax (just last week finished it for the first time). So I believe she probably can't go wrong starting with Cathe. Cathe definately has the endurance edge over the firm. I was missing that blow out aerobic session that I now get with Cathe.

Pretty soon your sister will be begging for more Cathe!!

Hi Christine,

I don't know anything about the Firm, and, well, everybody knows how I feel about cardio:p , but I would recommend Cathe's Official Beginners Rotation to get started. It's a 3 month rotation that incorporates Basic Step, Body Fusion, Low Impact Step, Total Boday Sculpting, and Total body Stretching. All you need is a step, some light weight dumbells, a stability ball, and a resistance tubing. I've enjoyed it (as much as I can enjoy step:7 ) and I think it's an excellent intro into Cathe. HTH

Christine,

It looks like your sister posted a similar question under the Ask Cathe forum. You may want to bring this forum to her attention as it appears you're getting some great suggestions. :)

Yes, Wendy is my sister. I just noticed the post. I TOLD her I would post the question... Younger siblings NEVER listen!!! :+

Actually she wants something she can do just three days a week - she's a SAHM with three little ones 4 and under so she is on her toes a lot. I think she just needs a little more focused approach. She's lost a lot of weight recently - from a size 12 to a size 6 - and looks fabulous, but she would like to redistribute what she has left a little.

Hey Wendy- I've got the TLT videos Christine was saving for you (and I swept off with them, LOL!). PM me your address and I'll ship them out right away so you can be SORE ALL OVER!!!! }( :p

And, btw, I think your older sister is fantastic!!! (And I know how hard that was to hear- I'm a younger, too!! ;))

Amy - don't kill my sister - I'd have responsibility for the 3 under the age of 4 and I don't have my sister's patience! :p

She decided to start a little easier than the TLT's, although I think they'd be great for her... She called me - she's keeping Cathe. We're modifying the beginners rotation to suit her needs. I think she'll do really well with it. I'm excited that she's doing Cathe too! It was funny to see her post! She saw all of the responses and said, "Uh oh, what did I get myself into?" But, I let her know how wonderful you ladies are!

Amy - you're pretty fantastic as well! When's the next hike?

Christine- I'm free any weekend day before the half!! Where do you want to go??

BTW, how's your training going? I've had some hip issues, so I am curious how the half will go. I'm not able to run very fast right now :-( but my chiropractor and I are hopeful for a quick fix!

It's going to be a 10k for me this time. I'll do the Half in Humbolt. Ran into too many complications and training was just not enjoyable. Things have straightened out again, and I'm back to running, but I don't think I can build that kind of distance so quickly, so I'll run the 10k and meet everyone. Then I'll do a half in October.

Just let me know - I'm pretty free too... Want a challenge or just to chat?

I'm up for a CHALLENGE!!! }( I usually end up hiking with people who think it's a challenge when I feel like it's a chat, if you know what I mean... ;)

I'm in a similar situation with my running- I can go for about 90 minutes, and I'd prefer to be at 120 minutes, but we'll just see what happens. Knowing that there is wine at the end should help me through it, though!!! :9 Not to mention all the Catheites! :7

Sorry to hijack your sister's thread, btw...

Los Gatos Resevoir. 8-11 miles - which ever we want. 2800 foot elevation gain. You pick the date, we'll pick which trail together (the 8 miler is about 2400 foot, not 2800). Wear sun screen. I'll bring the dog...

Sunday 6/25? Or Saturday- I'm flexible! I just need to get in a run the other day.

Sunscreen is pretty much a given, now that it may have FINALLY stopped raining!!! I think we should start out earlier than 1pm, though! Meeting at 9:30 or 10?

Is this the Lexington place??

Lexington Resevoir. Start on the Limekiln trail - you can meet me at my house (I'll PM directions) and we can go over together, or we can meet there. I'm going to be in Napa through the 24th, so let me check with DH to see the plans for the 25th. Would you mind if he tagged along? Or would you prefer an all girls? It's not a big deal either way to me.

I'm fine with taggers-on!!! That is, of course, IF HE CAN KEEP UP }( }( }(

Just kidding- I know he's a hiker. :p

Yeah, but his knee is bothering him... We usually run the down hills, and he hasn't been lately. At one time we were able to do that 8 miler is 2 hours and 10 minutes, even with the elevation gain!
