Pull Ups

Hi Everyone,
I got an assist strap and can now do 5 assisted pull ups. I want to work on progressing but should I work on being able to do more assisted or less unassisted? Should I work on doing more straight or stopping and doing more sets of less reps?
So do I do 2 sets of 4 and try to work up to 3 sets of 4 with a little break in between? Maybe 3 sets where 1 set is without assistance (although that might be a lower rep set).

I'm in a similar position - I can do 12 assisted, 4-5 unassisted, but want to be able to do 12 unassisted (my year's goal!) Here's the modus operandi I'm following:

My 'sticking point' is right at the top - getting my head above the bar, so I'm doing a lot of standing on a stool, getting to the top of the rep and then just holding in the top position before letting myself down gently.
OK, so quite often I just let go.......
but you get the idea ;)
 
What got me to my goal was practicing the "let down" part very slowly, so I'd start on a stool and jump up, then slowly let myself down. After repeating this for what seemed like a hundred times, I was finally able to do an actual pull up. Part of it too was learning how to engage the muscles properly. Justine you are a power house LOL!

This is awesome! Thank you! Now I realize I've been doing chin ups and not pull ups!
