I sort of know what you mean. I only feel these target the back muscles on the highest weight, the 20 pound dumbell. Before that, it's just my arms going through space. It's a neat move, I like it, but I am not sure either if I really feel it working.
How about substituting for barbell rows, as Cathe uses on MIS and CTX Upper Body back section? Start with barbell at 25/30/35/30/25 maybe? Or whatever works for you. Try varying the handgrip too, sometimes overhand, sometimes underhand grip and that will target the back muscles in different ways. These are some of my favourite back exercises.
I had this problem last night on dong the CTX Upper body for the first time, Cathe does quarter dead lifts with barbell to target lower back muscles and I couldn't feel it in the back at all, and she's grunting with the effort! Anyone got any words of advice on this one?!?!?!?!
