Protein shakes?

AmyFit's post about her pre-competition diet started me seriously thinking about doing protein shakes, which I once scorned. In fact, I bought some mix tonight and had a glass. I decided on whey protein for no good reason except I always see it advertised in the bodybuilder magazines. Does anyone have any particular feelings or knowledge about protein shakes? I think the one I bought is from Solger. I upped my weight-training about 6 months ago but I never upped my protein intake, so I'm focusing on getting more protein in to support my new muscles. I also am wondering how many glasses I should have a day. Since I'm trying to cut down on sugar, I would consider a glass of this a kind of dessert (sad, I know.)

Thanks! And by the way, thanks AmyFit for your inspiration!

protein intake should be around 1gram per pound of body wt.I drink at least 1 a day after wt training and another if I wt train 2 times at a different times. It really helps I have choc mint by optimium nutrtion it taste good and has 22 grams of protein.

Hi Caroline,
I like the Spirutein brand--Ive used Met Rx, and I liked it okay, but it was really thick, almost a chore to drink one, so I went back to spirutein. I add whey protein to that, in vanilla flavor, to give it an extra "kick".

I drink one every day after I workout. My fav way to have the vanilla flavor is to add frozen berries to it--oooooo yum, yum!!

Hope that helps
Jayne

Hi Caroline,
I personally like the EAS shakes. I drink the Myoplex and Myoplex Lite. I drink the vanilla and choc cream packets that you mix in the blender with water, milk, fruit, bananas etc... whatever you like basicly. I LOvE the chocolate with 1/2 teaspoon of Peanut Butter :9

I also drink their "Ready to Drink" shakes a lot as I am always in a hurry. I use them w/a banana for mid-morning or mid-afternoon snack.

I just got a new shake that the experts over on LeanandStrong.com all rave about, its called Grow!. If you like a shake that tastes like cake batter, this is the one for you. I got the low carb version. Another good quality protein shake is Labrada Lean Body.

Mindi - I LOVE the cake batter tasting shakes! I could eat a whole bowl of cake batter every time I bake a cake. My family is lucky if they end up with 1 cupcake if I am the one mixing the batter - hee hee.

Do you have any recommendations on the Lean and STrong flavors? Also, where did you get the Labrada Lean Body one?

I too drink the EAS shakes I drink Myoplex Lite RTD and I have the protein bars too. I usually have one of each a day since I very rarely get in enough protein. But I can eat carbs for days. They taste a little watered down to me so I blend the shake up with some bananas and berries and Waa la it tastes great and its pretty filling too.

I love Lean gainer vanilla from World nutrition! Nothing exciting about the flavor only that it taste like regular vanilla . It has 50 grams of protein on 3 scoops and I usually just use a scoop and a half to make it last longer or the 3 scoops if I'm not getting enough protein in my meals for that day!( I'm happy with my protein intake there!)I blend up 2 bananas,2 apples, ice cubes-lil water on the bottom mix then add my protein for a post workout drink! I just tried the Detour protein bars from Designer Whey, they have 32 grams of protein and do taste like a snickers bar-the closer I got to the end the better the caramel was:p

Grow! is the one that tastes cake batter-like. :) Get it from Netrition. In Labrada Lean Body, I got the box of chocolate mix, has mint chocolate, peanut butter, milk chocolate and all are YUMMY! :)

But Grow! is fabulous!

I never eat bars, too much funky stuff in em, better to have real food first, shake second, bars, a deal last choice.
