I think that BFFM is one of the places where I read about not having too much protein at any one time. Isn't that book great? I've been using BFFM, too, and, although the fat loss is slow, it's been nice and consistent, and I know that I've also been putting on muscle.:)

Leanne - I LOVE BFFM. I lost about 40 pounds a couple of years ago and since then have hovered between 155 and 145. I recently started lifting heavier weight and could see some wonderful muscle definition - underneath a nice fluffy layer of fat - LOL! I really want to see what those muscles looked like so I started lurking around the forums and bugging Debbie (fitnessfreak) and realized that I really needed to monitor my nutrition.

The first couple of days of recording my food was a real eye opener for sure! I decided to get BFFM after seeing it mentioned so much on the forums. I have only been following the eating style for a couple of weeks, but I have lost almost 2 pounds a week and more importantly, my BF% is going down (I had to get a BF monitor after reading the book.)

It's so good to be able to communicate with others who are on the same program - I think my family is a little sick of hearing me talk about it LOL.

Hi Coradora,

Congrats on your weight loss! That is just fantastic! LOL about your family getting sick of you talking about it! My DH is also really tired of me doing the same thing! So maybe we can chat on-line more about the program together so we don't drive them crazy!:)

I bought BFFM back in August, and following its guidelines and lifting heavy helped me slowly (but surely!) lose about 16 pounds. I was also counting calories for about 6 months, but for the past few weeks I've been just focusing on eating well and not obsessively logging calories. It's funny b/c since I started doing that (not counting calories), I actually lost a little more weight, even though I was stuck at the same place forever. Sometimes letting go a little can help, I guess!:)

Can I ask what BF monitor you use? I have a Tanita scale (which isn't very accurate), an Omron hand-help monitor, and also the calipers that he mentions in BFFM (I told you I've been obsessing too much!;-) ) and yet all three give me different readings . . . .

Hi Leanne

I have the Omron - I bought it for myself for mothers day - I don't know how accurate it is, but I mostly just want to monitor that my BF is going down LOL! It's a good way for me to see that I am getting results even if the scale isn't showing much.

I just got BFFM at the beginning of this month and didn't read it in order, which I am discovering was a bad idea. I thought I had read all of it, but I missed some important stuff (I was having printer problems and I really don't like reading a book on the computer.) I think that my ratios were a little off - not enough carbs. I have been noticing that I haven't had as much energy for my workouts and have been kinda grouchy. Yesterday I had a cheat day and ate a lot of carbs and today I had a kicka$$ workout! (GS Chest and Triceps.)

I will probably monitor my calories and macros for a while to see what works best for me. Did you use a spreadsheet to track stuff? I am a spreadsheet junkie and have one for everything!

What type of rotation are you doing right now? I saw that you also like the GS. I have been using it for about 6 weeks now and have seen such good results that I just want to keep at it, but I know I should switch it out soon so that my body doesn't get used to it. I have been modifying a bit - using heavier weights and less reps with longer breaks in between.

BTW, my name is actually Corrie :) I use coradora for all my screen names because it is what my stepdad likes to call me.

Hi Corrie,:)

I hope it's OK that we're hijacking this protein thread!:)

I never used a spreadsheet to monitor my ratios, although that probably would have been a good idea! I just used an on-line calorie tracker, and would look at how many carbs, etc. I ate each day. I know what you mean about not getting enough carbs -- I get really grouchy, too!;-)

I did GS, too, for about six weeks (the longest I've stuck with one series; usually I do four weeks and then move to something else) and loved doing it for so long! I took two weeks off from heavy lifting, and then started back up with S&H a few weeks ago. The longest I've done S&H is for three weeks at a time, but this time I'm going to try to go for five or six weeks. We'll see how it goes!:)

It's probably a good idea, like you said, to switch to something else for awhile since you've been doing GS for so long. What are you thinking about doing next?

Leanne, do you belong to a check-in? Maybe we should hop out of the Ask Cathe forum before we get in trouble LOL!

Hi Corrie,

I was thinking the same thing. I'm in the Melters group, if you'd like to chat there! :) Are you in a check-in group, too?

Question for Cheryl regarding the egg whites, please! How are they shipped, on dry ice? Have you bought the gallon containers? :)

Thanks for the link, I buy Egg Beaters and the store brand of egg whites every week. I think this might be a more versatile product in that I don't have to cook them every morning. :)

Shelshula thanks for the info-quite frankly you'd have to hook me up to an IV to get that in my body. It just sounds nasty. Coconut oil, women's oil, flax oil,egg whites, ick, it sounds like drinking a giant spit wad.

I'm happy to be of help.

Quite frankly I thought her shake sounded gross too.

Wasn't she consuming like three days worth of oil in one shake? And she said she drank a few shakes a day?

Her body certainly looks better then mine, so I guess I shouldn't judge. She's obviously doing something right.

Doesn't it just seem a bit odd to get all these "essential nutrients and oils" in a shake as additives instead of ingesting them through regular dietary intake?

X

It is a lot healthier to get the nutrients from food then from supplements. Although getting them from supplements is better then not getting them at all.

It seems like a waste to put oil in a shake when you can use the oil for something you'll really enjoy, like as a salad dressing, as a bread dip, lightly coating steamed vegetables, lightly coating pasta. Why deny yourself the pleasure if your going to consume the oil anyway?

When I read Tosca Reno's Eat Clean Diet, it seemed like she was advocating a very low fat diet. Then there are these fitness models who advocate eating steamed broccoli and then want you to put oil in your shake. Well I say, put the oil on the broccoli and keep it out of your shake!

(disclaimer: yes I am aware that Jennifer Nicole Lee didn't mention broccoli in her little video, and I don't know what she says about broccoli, but I bet she eats it steamed.)

I agree. I haven't looked at her smoothie recipe, but from the descriptions and comments here, it doesn't sound that great.

Low fat, maybe, but not low sodium. Have you had a look at her recipe book? Some of the recipes have 50-100$ of the recommended daily intake of sodium in!

>> Then there are these fitness models who advocate eating steamed broccoli and then want you to put oil in your shake.

LOL! Rather silly, isn't it?

I got her cook book and returned very shortly after.
I wasn't too impressed with it.

Eat Well magazine has better cookbooks which are more sensitive to many different nutritional needs and if they don't count as clean eating, they should be very easy to adapt.
