Protein Powder?

Do any of you use protein powder on a regular basis to help get in enough protein and to build muscle? I've got a big ol' bag of "Pro-Rated" chocolate powder that I got at Costco 6 months ago or so, and I just kind of re-discovered it. A scoop is kind of high in calories (138), but also has 27 grams of protein. As a vegetarian, I have to work extra hard (especially with all the weights I'm lifting now) to make sure I'm getting in enough protein, and I was wondering whether adding a scoop or two a day of this, along with a cup of milk or soy milk, might be a good idea.

Thanks for the help!

I use protein powder on a regular basis. I started adding more protein to my diet in November 2006 and have noticed more muscle gain and some weight loss as a result. I usually use either Designer Whey or Pure Protein. Both are low in fat and sugar. The Designer Whey has 18 grams of protein and the other has 23 grams. I also drink Isopure (whey protein) in a bottle a couple of times a week. It has 40 grams of protein.

I was going to start using protein powder, but I read up on it on the Internet and found out that your body doesn't need too much protein because it can put stress on the kidneys. I think that I read (but don't quote me on this) that if you consume 1200 calories a day you only need 35-45g of protein. I forgot which Web site stated this, but lots of the nutritionist info online said about the same. I eat a protein bar for lunch and drink a cup of soy milk or organic regular fat-free milk each day and find that I usually get the protein I need just through my normal diet.

Hi Judegirl,

I use the Pro-Rated chocolate protein powder from costco too. I put 1/2 C Fiber one cereal, 1 scoop protein powder, 1 C frozen fruit, and 2 C water. I used to use milk instead of water but I'm following WW and it made the points to high for me.

You would have to give it try for several weeks and see if you think it makes a difference for you.

Thanks for the replies. On a side note, isn't Fiber One the best thing EVER? My favorite thing to do with it is crush it up, cut up some thick onion slices, and then dip them in Egg Beaters and the Fiber One, then bake them. Delicious and super nutritious onion rings!

Yeah, I started adding it also. I'm using Designer Whey, the vanilla praline one, and it's really yummy. I only use 1/2 scoop at a time, and add it to about 4 oz lofat milk over ice. It's like a little mini dessert for me, but I know I'm getting good protein and B vits, too.
