probiotics?

hopefull

Cathlete
I am looking for a good probiotic supplement? Does anyone know of a good one, and what should I look for when selecting one. Are there any health risks associated with them?

Thanks

I am not sure of a "good" brand. I would go to your local health food store and see if they have any advice for you. I am sure there are health risks as there are risks with anything. Everything has some kind of warning label on it. However, probiotics are very beneficial for you health. Until you can find a good probiotic, eat yogurt in the meantime.

If you have taken a lot of antibiotics in the past, probiotics are very necessary. Again, check out your health food store!

Good Luck!

I use Pharmax High Potency Probiotics. My naturopathic doctor prescribed it a while back.
Most probiotics that you find a drugstores or even healthstores have fillers and binders only have a minimal count of the actual beneficial ingredients.

I started out with HLC Synbiotic Packages (same company) to treat a severe Candida and moved on to the High Potency Powder after 6 weeks. I take the High Potency Powder for maintenance now. It tastes pretty good and seems to work well for me.

You can find it online at www.rockwellnutrition.com. Annika Rockwell is also a nutritionist and has a Q&A section, or I think you can even contact her or her staff directly by email. I like her website and even with the shipping cost, it is cheaper than at my local naturopathic pharmacy.

Good luck!

Thanks for your response. I just ordered Florify from Melaleuca. It is an acid resistant probiotic which makes a lot of sense to me. One of my big questions was how could those little microbes survive the trip through the stomach. I use a lot of Melaleuca products, but haven't ever used any of their supplements. When no one posted to my question I just figured this would be a place to start. I am going to check out the website you suggested. I am looking for a probiotic for the same reason you were. A z-pack sent me into yeast hell. It's cleared up, but I don't want it to EVER come back! Never had the joy of that experience before, and never want to have it again!

I use Bio-K, which is a yogurt-consistency preparation that tastes like buttermilk. All probiotics should be taken with meals, once you already have something in your stomach. If you have them on an empty stomach, your stomach acids will kill almost all of the bacteria, but if you have them with food, only about 95% (!!) will die - but 5% of them is enough to make a difference, and fix you up after antibiotics.

Hi there
Interestingly enough, i went to a research talk on probiotics recently. In terms of most effective, the probiotic in Activia Yogurt, BL is the only one shown to have any benefit. Often in supplement form, the are inactive before getting to the bowel. So go for the activia yogurt instead!
