Hi Cathe & Company,
As an avid fan of Cathe Friedrich and step aerobics for over a 20 year span, I've often wondered why this concept has never been developed for the preteen and teen market. I recently turned my son on to step aerobics (yesterday was his first attempt and boy, do I wish I had a video camera to capture this comical, yet historical event!). I know he will improve with practice and time. But I often wonder, in the wake of the countless "Curves" studios and adult exercise videos, why nothing has been established to go after this uptapped market. Things are so much different now from when I was his age (12). We always played outside, walked to our friends homes, had fewer fast-food places to choose from and had no cable TV or video games to keep us on the couch. Nowadays, kids are experiencing weight gain and lack of cardio vascular exercise at dangerous proportions. Particularly those children who aren't be sports-minded whereby they get their exercise during practice and games. There needs to be a routine that is developed at this young, impressionable age, that exercise is a way of life that must be practiced, long before they're old enough to drive.
I've always thought there should be junior circuits, aerobic studios or home videos for this unique market, but have lacked the expertise to develop one. As one of my personal "heros" who has continually motivated me throughout my physical fitness goals, I would love to get Cathe's prospective on this issue. When I discuss it with my friends and family, their response is always "well, I guess there's not a market for it", which I firmly disagree with. There is definitely a market for it, as long as parents are able to educate their kids as to the importance of being physically fit. And, since most of the consumers of the home video and fitness center markets are parents themselves, that shouldn't be too difficult to achieve.
I would welcome the opportunity to be a part of a project that would encourage preteen fitness, whether it would be an on-site studio or in the home video market. Let's shape up today's kids so that they can live a healthful tomorrow!
Sincerely,
Lisa London
