Prayers needed- My new puppy

Hi everyone....
I know I don't post here often but I lurk daily. I'm just beside myself right now, my 7 week old Golden Retriever Lucie is at the vets as we speak. Last night she had loose stools, and this morning around 11 she started to get diarrhea and vomiting. So I rushed her over to the vets. They did blood and fecal tests on her...and her white cells are up and she has a small amount of parasites in her stool. As of right now she tested negative for parvo, but the vet says she is still at a medium risk. :( I'm just so scared that we are going to lose her. I know that most dogs don't survive parvo.;(
I have another problem that I'm not sure how to handle though. (and I don't want to sound heartless here) but the vet said that what ever it is she would have picked it up while she was still at the breeder's. So I'm wondering if we should be asking him to help with the bill. It is going to be expensive because she will need to be in there overnight and at least tomorrow...maybe longer. I'm not sure what the proper etiquette is with this. I mean I don't really care, I will pay to save her, but I'm wondering if he should help with the bill.;(

Hugs for you and your puppy!!! Personally, I would ask the breeder nicely, then when he turned me down, I would raise Cain and bust him out to every professional agency he belongs to. I can't stand when people mistreat or don't keep their animals healthy, esp if its something preventable.

I guess my questions is, when you got the puppy? Meaning, last week, the last few days? I think it is quite young for a 7 week old puppy to be seperated from it's Mom and siblings. Most reputable breeders will not release the puppy until the pup is at least 8 or 9 weeks old and won't ship until they are 10 weeks old.

As to your vet saying, whatever it is she has gotten it from the breeder, is kind of questionable.

I am sure you signed a contract when you bought the puppy, it should state if they guarantee health and for what period of time. It should also state what happens if a puppy gets sick within this period, if the breeder takes back the puppy and you get a new one, or if the breeder will pay for the vet bills.

By the way, dogs can and do survive parvo, it depends on many factors.

Sorry you are going through this, I hope Lucie will be ok.

I am so sorry to hear about your Golden Retriever! :( Having a puppy with the runs is NO fun...I know, I had 4 puppies with the runs at one time and it was the hardest thing to deal with.

When my ex and I bred (only a ONE time thing) our English Bulldogs, we had a parvo scare. We had the puppies scheduled for their first worming treatment just after they turned 7 weeks old (this is what our vet recommended age-wise). One of the 5 puppies had already gone to her home, so we had 4 left with us. A couple of days before their appointment, they all started getting diarrhea. I mean, very nasty and runny diarrhea (sorry to embelish but it WAS terrible!).

The vet told us it could be parvo and did the appropriate testing. Fortunately it wasn't. He told us though that they most likely had worms and put all of them on the de-worming medication. We also purchased the medication for the 5th puppy that had already gone home and gave it to the buyer (I believe this is what your breeder should do at least).

The vet told us that when nursing dogs go outside to use the restroom, sometimes she can "pick" up bacteria or other types of parasites and pass them along to nursing puppies. Worms are VERY common in puppies that age. Try looking into de-worming meds for your puppy.

Now...back to your breeder. Definetely alert him/her to the problem. It very well could be your puppy picked it up there and chances are if your puppy has worms or worse...then the other puppies probably do too.

When your breeder sold you your dog, did they provide any information as to whether the dog had been wormed or not?

***sorry so long by the way...I hope anything of what I said made sense because I do fear I rambled on quite a bit!!!***

We got her a week ago. This breeder was still going by the old beliefs of ready to go after first shots at 6 weeks (it wasn't till after I brought her home that I learned that most wait till 8 weeks now) I am not in any way implying that he was not a reputable breeder. This was not the feeling I got from him at all. She was not shipped, he only lived 30 mins from us.
I'm not questioning the vet either because we have only had her for a week and the vet says that what ever she has would have taken a week to 10 days to incubate, and her first few days were in my home and yard where no other dogs have been.
We didn't sign a contract, just got a "bill of sale" I guess you would call it that stated she was in good health. But I don't really want to get into whether or not he was a reputable breeder or any of that.....But I will say he was in no way shape or form a puppy mill.
Thank you so much for saying that dogs can survive parvo...that makes me feel a little better. I hoping because I got her to the vet with in 30 mins (maybe less) of her vomiting she will pull through because she was put on IV right away. AND she has perked up a little since they started it.

Yes she had been dewormed on the 26th of July when she got her first shots. I have left a message for the breeder. I'm just waiting to hear back (it is a long weekend in Canada, so he may have gone camping or up to the lake for the day) At very least I want to let him know incase any of her brothers and sisters get sick.

I don't want to sound like a know-it-all but the incubation time for parvo is 3 to 7 days. It is usually accompanied by high fever (107 degrees), yellow vomit and runny, very foul smelling stools.

It can be passed from yard to yard by birds carrying the virus on their feet or people going "kennel-hopping" carrying the virus on clothing or shoes. Or even through a visit at the pet store.

Therefore, I do think your vet is kind of overreaching by stating, it could have ONLY come from there. It could be, but there is not way it can be stated with certainty.

When my dog had her puppies a few weeks ago, people thought I was completely nuts, because I made them take their shoes off before they came into the house and wash their hands and feet with a Clorox solution. I couldn't take my dogs to the dog park during that time.

It maybe that she has parasites, or maybe that she had problems with a change of food.

I hope she will be ok, keep us posted on her. Hang in there!

So sorry to here of what you and your puppy are going through. Several years ago we got a golden ret. puppy which ended up with a severe case of whip worms even though she had supposable been dewormed. She had the same symtoms you are talking about. I hope the vet figures out what your puppy has and everything works out. My golden is now 5 months old. We've had her since she was six weeks old. I don't know what I would do if she was sick.

Trust me, Parvo's incubation is 7-10 days from the day of exposer. I have been reading about it all afternoon, and this is what the VET said as well. No it can not be said with 100% certainty, but with the time line and the events after it is very conclusive if it is parvo.
She has not had a change of food we are still on the bag that the breeder provided for us. Her parasite count in her stool was small as well, so this was not what the vet was concluding as the problem.
I did not post this for people to argue with me as to what my VET has stated is going on with my dog, I posted this to gain support and understanding, maybe the even a story of how someone else's dog pulled through to give me hope. So please take your "know it all" attitude elsewhere! It is the last thing I need when I am already stressed!

Sorry I meant her white blood cells are low not high!

I guess the opinions vary about the incubation time even among vets. My vet told me 3 to 7 days, sometimes longer.

I am not saying your puppy contracted it at your place, I am just saying be prepared that the breeder may not be as cooperative as we all hope he will be.

I hope your puppy will be okay. Keep us posted.

I'm so sorry your puppy is sick and I hope she is okay. I don't think that Carola was 'arguing' just maybe giving you some things to consider since you stated that you were thinking about contacting the breeder about assistance and asking for advice regarding that. I just did an, admittedly, simple search and found two websites that state the incubation period for parvo as low as three days. So, I think there is some wiggle room in those numbers. I'm sure your vet knows best and is going to do the right thing for your puppy and I don't think that Carola was in anyway implying otherwise. I just think that maybe she was pointing out some things to consider before you contact your breeder. Chances are your breeder may state some of these same things back to you if he/she is unwilling or dis-inclined to help.

Please keep us posted on how your puppy is doing and how you are holding up. I know how hard it can be when your 'baby' is sick and you don't know what is going to happen. I'll keep you and her in my prayers.

Sorry for snapping, I'm just under a lot of stress as I'm sure you can understand. Good news is, she hasn't vomited since we took her to the vet, so the IV must be working. the vet called me at 8:30 to let me know that and to tell me that Lucie is looking tired and depressed. Which I understand....even though she has only been in our family for a week, I'm sure she misses us and doesn't understand what is going on. I feel so bad for her. I'll let you guys know more in the morning when she calls me.

Great...some good news...please keep us posted. I'm sure she can't wait to get home to her family.

I'll keep her in my prayers.:)

So I just went to see her and she is doing much better. They had given her some wet food and she has kept it down (and in ;) ) So the kids get to go see her at lunch time. And we will probably get to bring her home later this afternoon. YEA!!!!
