post partum check in week of 1/25

RE: Brieeeee!!!

Well Briee, if you change your minds and want to go in halfzies with me, let me know. I really like Terminator. I like the intense Interval one the best (no weights ;) ) but the others are good too. All three are super long though, and not really new-mommy friendly. ;) ;) I'm thinking about just getting the cardio's, and keeping the VHS strength training ones. Briee, you do have the VHS versions, don't you?

Just got the Medula super pump today. I'm excited to try it out. The lactation consultant was WONDERFUL. Justin went to his 2 week appt today too. He was a little over 7 pounds when he was born...he's already 9 pounds!!! Must have some magic growth enriched milk, eh?

RE: Brieeeee!!!

Hi everyone--
Been a busy couple of days with my husband out of town again:(. In addition to school and housework,I had to help my son finish up a bunch of scout projects and get ready for the very late celebration of my daughters 7th birthday. I am not a party person, so I hope the kids all find enough to do to entertain themselves:7.

My exercise video history? Hmmm...I had been a regular exerciser (gym and running, mostly) until I started homeschooling and then I sort of slacked off a bit, but things did not really get bad until I was pregnant with Malcolm and they told me he had a heart defect. I was so afraid that I stopped exercising altogether and ate constantly through that pregnancy, gaining 80 lbs.

Afterwards, I was so exhausted from his care and homeschooling that I told my husband that all my life I was a fat person waiting to happen and I'd finally happened. I just sort of gave up for a while. Home fitness sounded so blah and me being an all or nothing type person didn't feel it would be worth the time, but I was not happy with how I looked or felt--my husband was wonderful, though, and never complained.

One day I was lurking on a homeschool message board and a woman posted a link for some reason to video fitness, so I clicked on it and poked around and found a link to Cathe, ordered a print catalogue and the rest is history:7. I am now basically back to where I started with her bodywise, because of having Bardric, but I gained much less weight than I ever have before, my energy level is great and my husband says he can feel lots of muscle that wasn't there before. He has been very supportive of my working out--he thinks it helps my stress level, and I believe that he is right.

Melanie--let me know how the pumping thing goes.

take care everyone--
Maggie

RE: Brieeeee!!!

Shopaholic...you are so sweet to say that you are impressed by my workouts and diet...BUT you can't be too impressed...I think I only got in two workouts last week :7 :7 :7 :7 . On the other hand my diet has been great and I hope I can get this weight off soon. This week has been good and I'm so sore today that I think I may take a rest day tomorrow. Yippee

Melanie...I have the whole IS series on VHS, but I'd love to be able to mix IMAX II around and also PUB, PLB. I taped PLB and PUB stability ball stuff on another tape so I can just do the stability ball stuff after my S&H legs or PUB abs after any other workout. BUT wouldn't DVD be nice!!! Like I said I can't figure out how to break it up, I know you wouldn't want two terminator DVD's, but maybe we could sell it on ebay, but then again, you would want C&W and probably IMAX II...I'll have to think about what could be done. You want to move closer and we could share it???? he he
;-) ;-) .

Runathon, got your email, but I don't know if I'm the person to dictate diet. I might be pretty wimpy in many areas (and I AM), but I have loads of will power in the area of diet. I once worked at Baskin Robbins (when I was like 14) and I never had a drop of icecream the entire time I worked there or so much as licked my fingers. I probably have OCD and don't know it (or care, I hate all those terms).

Right now I get up and work out and then have a shake consisting of
3/4 cup V8 Diet tropical (mango or something - it's orange and lo carb), 1/2 cup homemade plain yogurt, 2 tblsp ground flax seed, 1 frozen banana, 1/4 cup coconut milk, and 1 scoop of powdered protein - any plain flavor will do your choice whey, soy, whatever by it's about 22 grams of protein. Sometimes I don't get this made until 11 or 12 in the morning (noon). Then I sometimes eat some sesame balls which are high protein low carb if I'm feeling snacky. Late afternoon I make a huge salad with raw everything, brocolli, tomatoes, cukes, you can add turkey on top for protein, avocado, etc. I use dressing, I do not use low fat (Newman's olive oil and vinegar is usually the choice). Sometimes I have a protein bar, but usually not, maybe 5 per month. At night we always make shakes for the kids and I have some of that, consisting of 6 eggs from our chickens (no salmonilla), raw milk, 3 bananas, crushed ice, nutmeg, vanilla, this makes many glasses and I have one probably 12 oz. I was completely vegan until I started to add in raw milk, homeade yogurt, and raw eggs and once in a blue moon turkey. I think I needed these for the heavy lifting, my body was slowing wasting without it. I am cutting out almost all carbs in the form of bread, if I really want something I eat lo/high cereal that is lo carb and high protein with raw milk or soy milk.

I am not a chocolate fan and probably haven't had a candy bar in my entire married life, but if I have a downfall (craving) it's a plain glazed donut and I have had one of those in the past month. Actually DH was so sweet he found a pack on a discount rack and picked it up for me, but I ate one and threw the rest out, so I wouldn't be tempted. Once you give up candy and sweets, the craving leaves you after a long time. If I start eating many sweets...I start to crave them again - primarily like donuts and carbs. So better off to just stay away from them. Don't know if this will help. I look at diet like alocoholism and I know others who go for moderation, but I just can't. If I start eating a bag of chips....I will ALWAYS finish it, I could never eat a few that would be torture. So you can look at it as I have very little will power (which I think is true) or I have a lot, but can't touch any of it.

Boy did I get long winded....sorry,

Briee

RE: Brieeeee!!!

I hope this was okay to add.... Maggie looks GREAT. She emailed pictures of the family and I just want to say she has the most beautiful red hair and I think she looks wonderful in the pix!! I don't think you have that much weight to lose Maggie...maybe your scales wrong??

Okay...I'm done!!

RE: Brieeeee!!!

I think we all get long winded on this board. Wow, no sweets. I constantly crave sweets but i am able to eat them in moderation. In terms of your workouts any intense exercise those first few weeks is impressive. Back to workout history, after being weight obsessed for years after gaining weight in adolescence, bordering at times on eating disorder, i was at a good weight after grad school at age 24. I was never athletic but in college workd out some. I wanted to look better so hubby who was my boyfriend at the time suggested I join a gym. I also had just moved to be near him and had no friends so I joined a woman's gym . Shortly before this I did invest in my jane fonda step and tape so I exercised sporadically. Well, once I joined the gym, i met friends and kept up the workouts. A few years later , i found the firms at a local bargain store and then later as i mentioned, an aerobic instructor introduced me to cathe tapes.
Melanie, I recommend you start introducing the bottle soon. You don't want what happened to me to happen to you, a baby refusing the bottle. Strangely, she is now taking the bottle, but only at certain times. Briee, out of curiosity, how petite are you, and are you able to use heavy weights?

RE: Brieeeee!!!

Yes, we all get long winded. I feel like all you guys are my close circle of friends. It's wonderful. :) (I'm still emotional, can you tell?)
Maggie, I did the pump thing right away this afternoon. It was wonderful! I offically have two baggies in the freezer! Yahoo! I"m well on my way to a freezer full of milk! My let down period is almost instantaneously & I was able to produce two 2-oz bottles in less than 10 minutes. I don't like the Medula storage bags though--they have twisties instead of a zipper close on them. Yuk. I suppose this is a good thing b/c they're the most expensive bags. My nipples aren't even sore. I invested in 4 good quality nursing bras since I'm commited to breastfeeding for the long haul. Hopefully my boss will be supportive of this decision. I'll have to let him know soon...

Shopaholic, DH was able to give jr a bottle a couple of days ago. It was wonderful! We found a playtex nipple that is suppose to be supportive to breastfeeding. He had to be coaxed into it, but did eventually take it. One of the reasons why I got this pump is so DH & my 9 year old could feed Justin one feeding a day. It gives me a break too.

Briee, your post took me back to a couple months ago when I tried to make your seseme seed balls. Do you remember that? I was unsuccessful. I made seseme seed granola goo. I brought them to work though & feed them to my co-workers. I do this whenever some backed goods don't turn out. ;) It's kind of evil, isn't it?!?

RE: Brieeeee!!!

Hi gals! Looks like ya' all are doing fab!
I am so proud of everyone already sticking to their diets etc and eating healthy.

DH & I have been doing Body For Life eating since last Monday. It is going great so far. I have lost 22 lbs so far. I gained 34 so I have a few more to go. Sad thing is I think I have lost a ton of muscle since I wasn't able to work out so in reality I have a lot more work ahead of me. I tried on some of my jeans and they are no where close to fitting yet. I think it will take me at least another 4-6 wks before they will ;(

Mel - which pump do you have? I am looking at the Medela Advanced Travel one. My work benefits offer reimbursement for part of it so it will only cost me $215 and they are going for $315. I too am planning on commiting to breastfeeding for as long as I can. With my first son Caleb we had issues as he was a month early and couldn't suck enough so my milk never truly came in. Tyler, on the other hand is a suckin' fool! So, hopefully it will work this time! My work fully supports breastfeeding and even has rooms where you can do it. Hopefully your boss will respect your decision too! I guess at 2 2oz bottles in 10 min. what's to complain about?

When should you introduce a bottle? I am so confused on this! I have heard it is bad to introduce one too early, then I have heard it can be bad to not introduce one? uggghhhhh! What are you ladies doing?

Well, I worked out for the first time yesterday. I did Muscle Endurance - Upper body! OMG ALL of my strength is GONE! I couldn't believe it I was lifting only 8 lbs on my biceps and they were killin' me! I guess the good thing is it will be a LONG time before I hit a plateau again as I got a LONG way to go just to get to the strength & endurance I was at pre-preggo!

I think I am going to try cardio for the first time either this weekend or on Monday. I hit 2 wks postpardum on Friday. My bleeding is totally decreasing so hopefully I will be alright:)

Well.... sorry so long...will quit boring you now ;-)

Have a great day/nigh!

RE: Brieeeee!!!

I too am impressed with your self-control, Briee! Truly, if you found what works for you then you really are successful. I LOVE desserts, and I lack the will power to quit eating them. Problem one is: I love to make them and am a cookbook collectaholic. Heck, I worked for Mrs. Field's/Great American Cookies for 2 years running their test kitchen and lab, and you don't even want to know how many cookies I ate! Fortunately I have the healthy habit of exercising. My husband and I always joke that our exercising has to keep up with our eating habits!

Shopaholic, Max usually wakes up between 7 or 8 am. So he averages 8 hours per night. What time does Alexis go to sleep? I have had an off and on bottle problem with Max, but just today, he learned to hold/balance the bottle (Avent kind) in his hands while laying down and I think he loves it now. I'm also thinking this may be an early indication of his want to try solid foods since he has been notorious for only wanting to eat straight from the source!

RE: Brieeeee!!!

Fitnut, welcome to our postpartum group.
Emy, Alexis usually falls asleep between 8:30 and 9 pm and awakes around 5:30, 6:00 ish. . Hubby usually puts her in her swing and she is content for about another half hour to hour before she screams for food. Last night she did awake at 10 for a quick snack. She usually falls back asleep after being nursed in the am for about 45 minutes. When she awakes I have been giving her cereal and if she is still hungry baby fruit or veggies. My pediatrician said I could give her cereal or stage 1 baby food. She hated rice cereal but likes baby oatmeal if mixed with breast milk. Strangely she has been drinking bottles with formula recently. The bottle that seems to work best for her is the gerber bottle with nunuk nipple. Like Max, Alexis has always just wanted to be nursed but has been eating her baby food. Check with your pediatrician, but Max is older than Alexis so it should be fine. Be prepared though for a mess, after eating we both have baby food all over us. Alexis has been much happier since I introduced solids.
Melanie, that's great that Justin is taking the bottle, continue introducing it. Fitnut, I too heard the nipple confusion controversy. I don't buy it. It was worse waiting until Alexis had set patterns. I recommend introducing the bottle around 3-4 weeks and consistently use it. We gave Alexis a bottle at 1 month, she drank it all , so we assumed no bottle problem and then tried again a few weeks later. You would have thought we were beating Alexis the way she cried. Many books recommend someone other than the mother give the baby the first bottles.

Pumps & more

In regards to nipple contraversy, this is why I hesitated and waited this long to introduce a bottle. My main focus is on breastfeeding until I go back to work.I don't want to jeapordize this! So, DH or big brother will give Justin one bottle a day. This way artifical nipples won't be a totally new thing for him when I go back to work & I can still focus on breastfeeding.

Fitnut, I got Medula Pump In Style Traveling System w/ backpack. I really like it so far. I prefer the backpack over the briefcase style. I was going to rent it, but by the time you pay for the tubing ($40) and then monthly charge of $50...it'll basically pay for itself in 5-6 months. If we are fortunate to have another baby...we can use it then too. My insurance does not cover it. :( I phoned Health Partners and they will only pay for it if it is "medically necessary". On a positive note, I can submit it to my employer and it will go on my FlexPlan so I don't have to pay taxes on it. I will even submit the storage bags. I purchased the system and 50 Medula bags for $254.

Oh, I tried to pump this morning and it didn't go as well as it did yesterday. Justin had recently fed (about 30 minutes prior) so I don't think my milk was fully replaced yet. That's okay b/c I want to build my milk up more so I kind of expected this. My left breast got about 2 oz in 10 minutes and my right breast got about 0.25 oz in 5 minutes and then stopped. My lactation consulatant told me I should go a full 15 minutes, whether milk is being pumped or not...apparently this mimics Justin's "comfort" suckling. Any opinions on this? I'm thinking that if I'm at work and in a hurry, I'm not going to want to wait through this phase.

Briee, I agree...I would HAVE to have I-Max2 on DVD. I really enjoy intervals and cardio. It was an idea...always looking for ways to save money. :) Are you planning on pre-ordering any of her new DVD's?

RE: Pumps & more

Melanie, one bottle a day is perfect. Justin gets used to the bottle but has all the benefits of nursing. Sounds like you are doing great with the breastfeeding.

RE: Brieeeee!!!

AWWW...Briee, you are so sweet. I don't think the scales are wrong, though...I am also impressed by your self control with food. Lately, however, I have thrown temptations away, so that I will not eat them. I might eat half of something and just ditch the rest. It is wasteful, I know, but right now it is just better than eating all of it.

take care
Maggie

RE: Brieeeee!!!

Melanie--I hated the Medula bags also--I had forgotten about them until you posted. I much preferred the zip lock bags. You mentioned in another post that the lactation specialist said to pump a bit longer even if you were not getting any milk--this is what they told me as well. That nipple stimulation is very important in keeping up one's milk production. But the difference between you and me, is that you will be actually nursing Justin at other times of the day and not merely relying on expressed milk. So that will probably help your milk supply. Since Malcolm did not nurse at all, I had to do anything I could to keep that milk coming via the pump. Anyway, see what happens. You can always add that extra time if you need to. I admire your commitment:)

And Fitnut--I welcome you too!

Oh and by the way--Bardric has a cold;( --this is number 2 and he has been very cranky this week. I keep thinking that teeth are coming, but they don't appear. My contented baby has disappeared!

take care, everyone
Maggie

RE: Brieeeee!!!

Hey shopaholic, you asked how petite I am...I seem to remember a thread a while back and I thought it was helpful. They measured their wrist to "judge" bone (heavy or fine boned). So if this helps my wrist measures 5 3/4. I am 5'3 and 114 pounds right now. I want to get this last 5-10 off, but I realize that I've build more muscle and may not get back to 100 or so again. Last time when I was nursing and so sick I was at 97, but I went to Florida right before I got pregnant this time and complete pigged out and was around 107 when I got pregnant. I definitely have some ripply stuff on my thighs right now and of course my stomach is still loose skin and some fat underneath. I do use heavy weights, but it's taken a long time to build up to them. For slow and heavy, I use 20's on shoulders and bicep curls, I just recently have been doing 15's for side lat raises on shoulders, but my form is not what it should be by rep 8. I'm really working on shoulders. Aquajock is an inspiration and I'm very determined to push on with that bicep vein - worldly as it may be - it keeps me motivated!! I did pushups the other day and nearly died. I could do 50 before I was pregnant and now I can hardly make it to 20 - I've definitely lost it there. It might seem like I'm thin, but believe me there is flabby stuff because I have fine bones - ectomorph!! You mentioned that you are petite, I'd like to know what your wrists measure, just curious too!

Melanie...to let you know what kind of a problem I had with nursing and producing too much milk...I could pump 17 ounces in less than 5 minutes...isn't that sick!! I had to pump the stuff out BEFORE the baby nursed, just so I didn't gag her with all the milk. When I felt empty...then I'd nurse her. And so much milk caused major infections and when I got blocks I would swell up like a football. I don't miss that. I am very proud of you for being committed to nursing though, there is nothing better and you're doing a great job!!! Did you nurse your first baby??

RE: Brieeeee!!!

Wow Briee! That's a lot of milk! Holy Cow!!!!! I sometimes gag little justin withe my milk flow too. I feel so bad. I can hear him gulping so hard. Yes, I breastfed Jory. For only 6 weeks though. Enough to get him a good start. I was only 21 at the time and I was selfishly wanted MY body back! I felt it was time to diet a little & have a drink every once in a while. I"m much older, wiser, and less selfish now. ;-) At least I like to think I am.

RE: Brieeeee!!!

Briee,
I measured my wrists, they measured 5 1/2 inches. i am also shorter than you at 4 11 1/2, but prepregnancy you are much thinner than I. Preprego I weighed about 108, which was a good weight for me, once i gained muscle. Before adding weights, I weighed about 99-100(but I was also in my 20's). I have gone from struggling with 2 pounders to comfortable use of 10's for biceps and military presses. 20's are still way too heavy for me. Elyse
