PMS Cravings!!!!!! Help!

Oh my...... do I have some major PMS cravings!!!!!!! I stayed home today with my 2 year old and DH because the snow is so bad here in Colorado! I was soooooo hungry this morning I couldn't stand it! It was all I could do not to just eat the whole house down!

I also started S&H this week so maybe that is part of the hunger issue! Plus I was really bad this past weekend which I seriously think enlarged my stomach!!!!!!!!!

All I know is I have the cravings from H**L!! I am wondering if it is also because I have not been following my diet right the past couple 2 weeks.

Do ya' all ever experience this around PMS time? I usually get cravings but not this bad!!!!!!

Any ideas to help me control myself???? What foods are best to eat to fight the cravings???? I have been wanting to buy the BodyRx book to learn a few things and start following his nutrition program. Maybe it will help. However, I need help RIGHT NOW!!!!! I really do want to get back on track with the diet but am finding it sooooooo hard with these cravings!!!!!!!!!

p.s. I had to do M.I.C. today to at least make it even with the calories I am consuming!!!!!!!! It felt sooooo good. I did about 15 minutes of the hi/lo and then all of the step portion (except the last interval.... killed me!)

Hi Pammer,

I think once you have a craving, you should just have a little of what you fancy. For example, if you want chocolate, just buy a small bar and enjoy it. (It's better than letting the craving get so bad that you end up eating the entire sweet shop!)

Prevention is better than trying to "controll" a craving. I find to prevent junk food cravings (at any time of the month), I need to eat every 2-3 hours, making sure I get plenty of protein (which is actually what the Body Rx recommends).

You may find that with the exercise and the time of the month, your daily calorie requirements are actually higher. So make sure that you are eating enough.

Hope this helps!

Sharon.

I've read that it is o.k to eat a little bit more when you are on your period b/c your metabolism is higher. And of course I follow by this rule.
I have been having PMS symptoms to , even though my period is a week away.I am not my chipper self and I could EAT,EAT,EAT.LAst night I got home from work and I had a tiny caramilk bar(halloween size)and 4 dairy milk.I have been awful lately.
Sorry, but I don't have any advice as to what you should munch on.I just wanted to let you know that you are not alone. But I usually just give it to them.

I have emapathy for you. When I allow myself to go on an "eating vacation", I often find it hard to get back on track for a few days.

For example, I was out of town last week and we ate out continuously. This week I have had a hard time having two good eating days in a row.
Adding extra water can be helpful. When you have a craving, make a deal with yourself to have a VERY BIG glass of water first and wait 15". Then if you really have to have something, have it.

Best of luck to you, and remember this too shall pass:

Hi Pammer,

I read a brilliant book last year about PMS, in fact it is called 'The PMS Bible', can't remember the name of the Doctor who wrote it but this female Doctor pioneered help for women suffering from PMS in the 50'S and 60'S, and set up the first PMS organisations in the UK to help women who suffer. She discovered that women who committed murder did so a few days before their periods arrived, and women in prisons caused havoc for themselves in the few days before their periods. She also realised that to deal with PMS, you must try and eat regular small meals every 2-3 hours, so that your blood sugar level does not get low, cut out sodium, caffeine, and alcohol (women with PMS crave alcohol just before their period arrives too and are more likely to binge drink).
It is a fantastic book, well worth a read. I bought mine from Amazon UK, which I think also caters for international shoppers, but I would also check out Amazon US too.

Hope this was of some help

You said you were so "hungry". If you're hungry why not just feed yourself with lots of good nutritious foods? Sometimes I just have to sit down and eat a pound of turkey or eat three large salads with real olive oil dressing and throw in lots of beans and olives and other good stuff. Is that what you mean by hungry? If so, so what?

Or do you mean you crave sweets? The perfect antidote to a craving for sweets I think is a Balance bar or a Luna bar, or even 2 or 3. It's pretty hard to still be hungry after a few of those, and it's a sneaky way to get LOADS of vitamins and minerals and fiber into yourself! I've found the damage to be quite minimal.

Hope this helps? Or am I totally missing the point?

Hi Pammer,

The Doctor that wrote the book is called Dr. Katharina Dalton. Just checked on Amazon UK for you.

Pammer:

I am in this with you this week, my PMS is really ghastly this time round. My solutions are:

--I eat loads of fruit, several bananas, apples at a sitting.

--I make home-made soups, and eat these, huge bowls of them,

--I have recognized the time of day when I am most likely to binge and it is nighttime, after 9pm, so this week I have put the kids to bed, then brushed my teeth and put myself to bed early with the newspaper, or good book and caught up on my sleep which can only do PMS some good.

So, conclusions:

--fill yourself up on easy to eat good stuff (soup and fruit really fills you up), then you may feel too stuffed to eat anything else

--once you recognize what is the danger hour for you, you can learn to avoid it. If yours is in the daytime, then get the hell out of the house quick! Go to park, movies, friends' house with kids/another friend, etc, to avoid conuming entire contents of fridge.

Hope it helps

Pammer:
also remember not to stress it too much. I have read often in Health magazine that research shows that even though women may binge before their period, it does not translate to weight gain, as our bodies either need or use up these calories at this time. And my experience is that this is correct.

If ya' all were here I would just hug every single one of ya'! You helped me so much today

I followed your great advice and it worked!!!!!!!!! :-jumpy

I went out to lunch at Chili's and ate a HUGE salad w/1 piece of Garlic Bread and tortilla soup! It made me sooooo full! Then when I got hungry this afternoon/evening I ate a Luna Bar, apple, non-fat cheese and yogurt! :9

Now I am soooooo much better. I think I was just simply starving (or my body thought I was). Anyway, my cravings are soooo much better. I didn't even eat but 2 pieces of Halloween candy tonight (and I have a house full of it!)

So... I think your advice on fill up on good food is really helpful. It sure helped me. I really think I am ready to get back on track!

Clare - your post about getting the hell out of the house quick cracked me up girlfriend!!!!!!! I even had to tell my DH. It's like... Run for Your Life!!!! Before you eat the whole house!!!!!!!!! So sad but true:)

Thanks a million gals and guys:)

Happy Halloween
-Pammer
