PMS Blues...

Cathlete
I can't break past the extreme tiredness and I have during "that time of the month". Any advice on how to break through it so it doesn't disrupt my workouts and my eating habits? Is there a special rotation to keep in mind during these times or certain foods?

Thanks

Carrie ;(

Hi Carrie! PMS is a result of fluctuating hormones in the body. Everyone will experience different levels of symptoms from month to month. Some months are way more tolerable than others. While there is little you can do (outside of medication) to completely rid your body of having the symptoms, you can simply be easier on your body and go with the flow (no pun intended, ha) during these times. Try to keep a lighter social schedule, keep yourself away from avoidable stressful situations, go to bed earlier, drink extra fluids, take a multivitamin, make sure you get proper iron intake (since blood loss will contribute to your fatigue and overall weakness), have a good cry to release stress if thats what your body wants to do, keep your workouts at maintenance levels rather than push too hard at this time, and take a relaxing bath. These things should at least help with the symptoms to keep you in a better frame of mind during this time. Good Luck!

Carrie,
I'm sorry to hear that you are suffering from PMS. I sympathize! There is a great book that I recommend "Women's Bodies, Women's Widsom". Here's a link if you are interested: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/05...f=pd_bbs_1/104-5442717-2319162?_encoding=UTF8

There is a section on PMS with good nutritional advice.

I also find that being outside and exercising in a group helps lift my mood. You don't have to "workout", play is also great! Be well!

Thank you Cathe. I will keep all in mind, esp. the iron intake and relaxing bath, and the good cry:)

Oh, and I do hope that you are starting to feel better as well.

Oh my gosh! Absolutely loved the "Dolly" pms blues song... It brought a much needed smile to my face. Life just isn't as bad as it seems sometimes...

Thank you,

Carrie

Carrie,

I'm right there with you. Don't you often just want to crawl in bed and tell the world to go away or you might hurt them?!

I find that keeping my diet as clean as possible on a consistent basis -not just right before or during PMS- helps dramatically. If I've been eating properly and exercising consistently, it does help; PMS is still there, but no where as debilitating or EVIL.

Also, yoga has helped me with dealing with many "things" in my life. I believe it's helped me feel more in control of my body and, thereby, more in control of my mind. It is a way I have found that will make me slow down a bit. But I realize yoga is not for everyone.

Best wishes :)
