Plyo Floors?

Hi Carolyn,

Like you, I have had it with issues related to aerobics so I followed your link and contacted the company for more information on the products use with carpeted floors. I was disappointed to find out that these mats don't work well on carpet (see email below). I hope it works out for you :)

You will need 6 tiles for complete coverage of your 64 sq ft. If it is
low pile carpet there will be a sliding margin & some static build up
these tiles are best used over cement.

Yeah, I realize they don't do well over carpet. Thank goodness that isn't an issue for me. I'm wondering if any of the rubber tiles would do well over carpet?
I was actually getting ready to build my own aerobic floor when Kevin contacted me and told me he had no problem shipping to my APO address. You'd be surprised at how many people/companies absolutely refuse to ship to APO addresses. Sometimes military life is a bit frustrating. :) Anyway, he was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable about the product - so that may be of interest to some.

Carolyn, you'll be very surprised as to how a 3/8" rubber floor can have so much rebounding strength...
That's what I got for my workout room - the PaviGym 3/8" aerobic flooring in maple - and put it on top of the jigsaw mats I had.
It's expensive, yes, but if you are serious about your workouts regarding flooring, there's nothing cheap that also does work...
Did you get the wedgers or the plastic edges as well?

Good to know! No, I haven't yet ordered the wedges or the edges yet. Would you recommend this? I have a small workout room and I didn't think I've have room for them. I didn't want to have to cut the mats too much as I move every 2.5 years or so and who knows how big my next space will be.

ETA: Oh, and I also got mine in maple. How does it look?? :)
Also, you said that you put the mats over your interlocking mats? Do you think that provides a better surface? I currently have those interlocking mats (I HATE them!) right now and I was planning on getting rid of them. I may think twice about that if I can put the nice ones over them.
 
I just got my pavigym aerobic tile mat. I have major knee issues. I bought 6 of the tiles. It came to about $416 with shipping. I noticed a difference right away. I did kickboxing and my foot could pivot easier doing my punches. I haven't tried high impact yet, because I am recovering from some knee problems. I did not buy the edges for mine. All in all I like them alot better than the puzzle mats I was using before.

By any chance do your jigsaw mats sit on carpet? I am really interested in the Pavigym flooring, but they don't work well on carpet. If I could put the jigsaw mats on the carpet and then the Pavigym on top of that, it might work out, but it's alot of money to spend and not be certain.

Jen - Do you use yours on carpet?

my workout area holds 9 PaviGym mats (it can hold 12 but then I'd have to cut corners to fit around the corner columns of the room and I didn't want that) so the grey edgers look really nice (each edgers covers 1.5 tile side but you can easily cut it). I haven't put the wedges yet until I move my TV and DVD player on a wall mounting unit to free up space. If I were you, I'd save on the wedges but get the edgers. I'll send you a couple of photos if you like.

the PaviGym floor has a sturdy non-slipping bottom layer and it sticks nicely on top of the jigsaw mats which are in turn on top of floor tiles... So, I wouldn't know how the jigsaw puzzle mats hold onto carpet. My advice would be to use the jigsaw ones as an under-layer for he Pavis since the rebounding strength would be better - besides the PaviGym mats are much heavier than puzzle mats so the whole structure (Pavi plus puzzles) should stay in place.

My pavi flooring is over hardwood floors in my spare bedroom. I have them over a piece of what you put under carpet (my mind has gone totally blank) that extra layer which I had had my puzzle mats on top of before. I hope I am making sense. I probably don't need that extra cushion but since I have it why not.

Ok!

Here's some pics of my workout room to see what the Pavi floor looks like (I try to keep it as uncluttered as possible - my treadmill is in another room by itself). I will probably get a flat screen 20" TV in a couple of months and mount it and the DVD players on the wall to make more room.

One word of caution, though...
Store your weights and other heavy stuff outside the area covered by the Pavi floor so you will avoid marks and imprints on it. I have all my dumbbells, barbell, step and bench on the puzzle mats. And make sure you mop it from sweat at least once a week (I do it after every workout - the weather is warm here and I am always drenched in sweat!!!:+ )

By the way... I painted the walls myself... It used to be a dining room but I decided to turn it into a workout room and move the dining furniture into the living room. It's on the third floor of the house and has a nice view of Athens...:)

Now I am going to have to start my research over again. I was leaning towards the bouncee tiles. Although, I have berber carpet in my basement which is where I work out - so the pavi floor might slide on that.


Cher, do you have any pictures you can share of the bouncee tiles?

Actually, I think you can ask for a small Pavi sample (make sure it's the 3/8" one) and try it on your carper, see if it slides. The bottom surface of the Pavi tiles is like rubber... maybe it wouldn't slide... each Pavi square weighs about 1 kg (2.20lbs).

You're floor looks great! I'm so glad you recommended putting the Pavi mats over the puzzle mats. Now I don't have to waste them by throwing them out.
Oh, and I love your AbFab picture! I used to watch that show religiously. :)

Hi Saundra,

Just an fyi, I did inquire about carpets and I was told they do not work well on top of carpet (see the text of the email earlier in the thread). That said, I think you would be able to lay the flooring over the tiles and use that between your carpet and the pavi floor.

Chris - Love the gym!! One more question, I need a floor I can lay down and remove before and after workouts - I don't have a permanent space for doing aerobic work. Do you think that would be easy with this flooring?

Carolyn - I was in London back in 1992 doing my Masters' Degree when the show first aired and I remember running home to catch it!!! Now I have all 5 seasons plus the specials on DVD and have AbFab nights with friends once in a while at my house!!! Talk about addiction!!! :D :D :D

Trish - the Pavis are quite heavy and if you plan to cover an area with let's say 6 of them you might have a small workout just putting them and taking them apart! :) That being said, I am not so sure that the interlocking sides would endure an everyday assembly/disassembly. I would ask the guys at Kieferfloors about it just to be sure.

Yea, me too. It's always great to have somewhere to go to find out what works from people who actually know.
 
How big are these tiles? My room is 14' x 11' and, unless I'm calculating all wrong... I don't even want to tell you what figure I came up with at over $5 per sq. ft.

Am I looking at the wrong product?
 
They are 39-3/8"x 39-3/8" (1 meter x 1 meter). My room is almost the same size. You might need about 12 Pavi mats (3 x 4), 8-10 grey edges (if you plan to put them on all four sides you will need about 10) and 3 or 4 wedgers (depending on how many tiles face the entrance of your room).
