Plus sized workout clothes?

Hi, does anyone know of any stores that carry workout clothes in sizes 16 and up? Do you think something like JC Penney or Sears would carry this? I'm trying desperately to get my mother to go do something, and her latest comment about not getting out to walk is that she has gained so much weight, she doesn't even have clothes for that. I would like to get her some clothes, and don't want to spend a fortune as I'm not convinced this will really do the trick, but it's a start.

Thanks for any tips!

Lane Bryant has a line of plus size workout clothes, as does Target. I think Walmart carries Danskin in plus sizes.

Athleta has some really nice clothes in plus sizes but they can be a little pricey. But they do have pretty good sales, just check frequently.

Thanks so much! For some reason, I would not have even thought of Target or Walmart, this is perfect. :D

Target, especially when you see that magic word, "Clearance." TJMaxx, Ross and Marshalls are good if you're willing to hunt for stuff.

On this I am practically an expert. Walmart tends to have the largest, and least expensive plus size workout clothes around. They carry their regular lines up to a size 20 and a plus size line in 1X, 2X, and 3X. I have never had good luck with Target's plus sized line, but more power to anyone who does. Lane Bryant comes out with one or two cute pieces per year, but they are more expensive than Target or Walmart. Fashion Bug also comes out with a couple of cute pieces per year. You can also try Avenue (or avenue.com) who carries a couple of cute pieces per season.

Junonia specializes in plus size women's activewear. The great thing about Junonia is they use a plus size sloper to make their patterns. A sloper is the basic pattern that a company works off of. Most companies make their sloper for a size 4 and just add a little here and there as the sizes increase. What I never understood is how a clothing manufacturer could have no concept that the proportions of a womans body from a size 4 to a size 20 are not linear. :eek:steps off soap box:eek: Junonia is really the place to go for good fitting clothes for a variety of activities they are more practical than cute.

Another option is to find someone who sews who can make the clothes. Jalie, a Canadian activewear pattern maker, hands down makes the best activewear patterns around. They are multisized to contain every size from childrens to roughly a size 22. While making activewear sounds really very complicated it is like a parlor trick, it is exceedingly easy. I can make a workout top or pants in an hour. They are only a couple of pieces and if you get really cool fabric (spandexhouse.com) you can use the same pattern over and over and everyone thinks you are a genius.

As you can see I have way to much experience on this particular topic, and maybe a bit too much passion. I always felt that the plus size market for workout clothes was pitifully underserved. :eek:stoppping before I jump back on my soap box.

Good luck to your mother.

Shayne,

I agree! I think there can be a lot of money made making plus size workout gear. This goes for not only those who are overweight but also those who are VERY muscular (unfortunately, not my case!). For example, how do people with very large upper arms wear ANY MP3 player armband?

Yes, and this has been broached many times. I do make plus sized workout clothes. I started making clothes for myself and interest just blossomed. I never knew what to do about it though. I make jewelry and after some initial interest I just have a lot of stock on hand and was afraid that would happen with the workout clothes. I really enjoy making workout tops and as I said I use really cool fabrics and a basic pattern. The biggest problem I run into is that people who are plus size often don't want to buy a wardrobe, or any clothes at their current size, they are waiting to buy clothes until they "lose the weight". Too bad too, because when I show up at class with a cute outfit I feel like a million bucks and can rock the world. Anyway, they only want to spend Walmart prices for their clothes and don't want to spend even a few dollars more for something that would make them feel really special. Funny aren't we, we can't appreciate ourselves for how special we are unless we fit into someone else's mold.

The idea isn't buried, just waiting until the right set of circumstances hits...

Just my size has a line of plus size workout clothes and a good catalog. Now that I'm down to a size 34/36B I can't buy from them anymore, who thought I would miss the catalog? I didn't.:p

Champion has a selection of plus-sized workout wear. Target carries some Champion styles (don't know about plus sizes, though) and the catalog and web site have some.

Shayne, good luck with that!! I wish I had the talent to design and make clothing, or anything for that matter.

RB and Kathryn, thanks for the additional stores, I'm going to check these out too. Champion, I actually have an account on, and I get discount emails from them constantly.

Thanks again! I just ordered a pair of pants and a tshirt from champion.com, at least it's something to get her started.
