plantar's warts

Hey all! Fun topic here (sarcasm), I just noticed that I have a plantar's wart (stupid locker rooms!) on the ball of my foot. I remember getting these as a kid and going through the dreadful freezing process, but I was wondering if any of you have heard of any new advances in treatment? I looked on-line and saw a duct tape therapy that just seems a little too odd for me to believe it works. I will be visiting the dermatologist soon but just wondered if you had any tips or suggestions--aside from staying away from locker rooms with an indecently exposed foot (ha ha).

On a completely unrelated note, I tried the Amy Bento kickboxing DVD and while some of her moves are fun, you would need a room that is bigger than my living room to do the workout. Why do they do that? I liked her personality, but her cueing was either on the spur of the moment or a streaming banter prior to the moves that my short term memory was unable to process.

Keli - my DD had these all over her feet last year. We ended up trying the over-the-counter freezing stuff. At first it seemed like it wasn't doing anything, but then they turned black and fell off (isn't that disgusting?) and there hasn't been a sign of them since. I think the one we tried is made by Dr. Scholl. We had an appointment with the dermatologist but ended up canceling it because they were all gone.

Good luck!

WHen I would get these as a teen, I'd dig out the center with a sterile needle, and they would go away. Not necessarily a recommended treatment, and I didn't read anywhere that I should do it, but it worked!

Ummmm, OUCH! That sounds painful! You're a braver woman than I am.

I had a plantar wart once, several years ago, and had it frozen off by a dermatologist. It hurt like a sonofab*tch. If I had one now, I'd definitely try that Dr Scholl's OTC stuff first! :)

Yep, I did this too! Took a lot of patience and it hurt like hell!
But it went away!

Wish I'd known about the freezing stuff... LOL!

Thuja oil applied and kept covered for as long as possible, reapplied and cover, etc. You can google it for more info. My dtr had one for a long time and when I finally realized what it was, this was the treatment we applied as per a friend's recommendation who had dealth w/ same. I expected it to take a week or so, but it came off w/i 3 days or so as I recall. good luck.
oh and it didn't hurt, it just dropped off. We didn't use duct tape I don't think, probably a square bandage.

I had a terrible time with warts a few years ago. I had several clusters of them around my toes. I went to several doctors. They tried freezing them, putting some sort of bright purple medicine on them, all sorts of treatments. None of them worked. Finally, I had to be put under for laser surgery that the doctor later said took him an hour (!) to finally get rid of everything. I was bed-ridden for several days, and then had to walk in special post-surgery shoes, which then led to several months of plantar fascitis. Not fun!

The lesson here is to treat as soon as you notice something. I think mine just went too long before I went to a doctor and then developed into a much larger problem than it needed to be.

Thanks for the suggestions! I think I will try the Dr. Scholl's tx! Thuja oil sounds interesting--I wonder if olive oil would work or maybe Wesson? I'm guessing the wart is on a low fat diet and this would kill it (perhaps trying too hard to find humor in the matter).

As for digging it out with a knife--wow--that's gotta hurt. Although freezing it is nearly as bad, but I think I could request some anesthetic (sp?). Well, I guess I could also try getting drunk before I dig it out--just to take the edge off--sounds like a country western movie.

Anyway, thanks all--I appreciate the feedback!

Both my sons have had these in the past few years, but thankfully I didn't get them. We went to a podiatrist who gave us medicines to apply for overnight and during the day and they slowly came to the surface and went away. They are nasty little boogers. Get them treated early like another poster recommended. The sooner, the better from my understanding. My oldest DS had one frozen but it was very painful...so when younger brother got a wart, he said NO WAY after seeing his brother go through that. He did let me do the toned down Dr. Scholl's freezing, though.

Good luck - I thought the duct tape theory was interesting. I think you ought to try it out just to satisfy our curiosity!

Oh, and since my boys got warts, I wear flip-flops in all public showers - feel icky otherwise now.

Did I miss something? I didn't see anyone recommend using a knife to dig it out! (Using a sterile needle to dig out the center is much different from using a knife to dig out the entire wart).
