plank hair straighteners?

I was listening to the radio the other day and the announcer on there swears by using the plank straightner to curl her hair. yes, curl it. she says she has thin straight hair that doesnt ever hold up and her stylist used the plank ceramic iron on her hair and curled it and it lasted all day. something she has never experienced before. have any of you tried this and if so how did you like it? I have the regular straightner and dont like it but I have permed hair and sometimes want something different and thought I could try this. thanks !

The trick is a iron that gets hot. Most home irons are 11 watt.
Professional are 40 + watt and go to 400 deg. Just use a good thermal protectant also. You can also burn your hair and make it sizzle if you are not careful.

thanks! I never would have thought that you could curl your hair with a straightner iron. i thought only to straighten it out not curl it. they also said make sure its ceramic!

I can't see how they would curl the hair with a flat iron. Only the plates are hot inside. You can't roll the hair in it. Bet ya it was a hot ceramic curling iron.
I am a hairdresser and i am trying to imagine how it could be done. I use marcal irons which have a rock n roll feature , but curling with a flat iron?????
I would have to see this.I am not doubting you, just confused...

thats what I was thinking. I was at walmart lastnight and almost bought one and was looking at it thinking how the heck did she do that. but it is the smaller iron not the big one. I too dont know how they did it but she did say curled her hair not straighten it. who knows!!

My twins have very fine hair with a slight curl. I asked my hairdresser what I should use to curl their hair for an updo. Following her instructions, I took a small section and rubbed in small dabb of Sebastian Molding Mud. Then I lightly sprayed the section with .tex hot style curling iron fix from Textureline. (I love that heat protecting stuff.) Next I curled it with a half twist while rolling it up. After I curled it, I sprayed the section with stiff hairspray. I bought a Curl Master Gold Collection curing iron and Beyond the Zone's Stiff Enuff hairspray from Sally's Beauty Supply.

Their curls lasted all night and into the next day. Their curls were stiff and did not move. I think if I used a different type of hairspray, their curls would be softer to the touch.

Another thing I'll do is french braid their hair while wet. When I take their braids out the next day, their hair is very curly. I'll pull the front back and spray on hairspray.

I wanted to mention that I straighten my hair with the largest barreled curling iron that the Curl Master Gold Collection sells. My hair is slightly curly, not thick or thin. If I don't blow dry it with a large metal, round brush, it looks a bit frizzy with kinks. It's hard to explain, but instead of curls, my hair looks wrinkly because I usually go to bed with wet hair. Anyhow, I'll spray that .tex hot style spray on each section prior to curling it. I take sections at the base of my neck and work my way towards the crown. After I curl everything, I rub a little the molding mud starting at the roots to get a semi-dirty look and some volume at the roots.

If you're going to invest in a straightener, go all the way and get the professional variety, NOT the one you can get at Walmart. I paid $125 for mine about five years ago and it was the single best hair purchase I've ever made! It is ceramic and goes to 425 degrees (I never use it that hot as my hair is only wavy, not curly). You can google to find some different brands, and maybe Ann will be kind enough to recommend a brand (mine is packed in my suitcase at the moment, sorry!).

PS: I can't see how you could curl it, either. With a straightener you'd end up with kinks, I think. Maybe it was the really small one? (Mine is an inch, they come in .5, 1 inch, and 1.5 inch, I think.)

You can curl with the CHI (ceramic hair iron). My CHI came with an instructional video that showed you how to curl it (you actually finger curl it and then press the flat iron over the curled up section). The CHI runs about $125 but OMG it's AWESOME! I don't know how I lived without it!!!
