Pizza bad for you?

Is the kind of pizza you get in pizza shops (thin crust- not grasy like Pizza Hut) all that unhealthy? For some reason, I always thought it wasn't too bad since it has protein, carbs, fat, calcium, etc. But everyone makes a big deal about it being jumk food.
Any opinions?

It depends on what is on the pizza. Cheese, fatty meats, etc is not health food. Vegies, lean protein, tomato sauce is healthy. Most American pizza is artery clogging, but it doesn't have to be.

Hi lay . . .

Generally, pizza isn't the wisest choice. Especially those in the pizza shops and Pizza Hut. The reason why is because there is "hidden" fat buried below the surface. I thought Little Caesars pizza wouldn't be that bad because it's kind of skimpy pizza . . . well check this out.

Based on 1/8 of a pie.

The best pizza is the one you make yourself.

Just a thought.

RE: Pizza bad for you? my vegan 2 cents

I'm a vegan and I love pizza--I just make it without the cheese. I occasionally will order it, pile with veggies and no cheese, but have to get protein elsewhere. If I make it at home, they have veggie pepperoni's that are tasty. :) I think these options are healthy. Plus if you aren't vegan and you make it at home, or even if you order it without cheese, you can add the cheese at home-low fat (or veggie cheese).

I love pizza and consider it an indulgance. I always blot my pizza with a napkin to reduce the greasiness. I also never eat it with sausage or pepperoni, which can make it super fatty. But I'd never give it up and it can be a very balanced meal!

If you make your own pizza, or find a whole foods restaurant that makes its own, pizza has the potential of being a very healthy food, but most purchased pizza has a crust made of refined white flour.

I too have become wiser and have been adding vegetables to my slices. I tend to go for all the corners, because I feel they have less cheese. Now, I'm trying to give the dog the pepperoni and sausage pieces. My sister says she makes hers with the Boboli crust and it's all kinds of vegetables, so I might try that, instead of going for the frozen or ordered ones.
