Oh my goodness they are adorable! You are right, little Sandy looks pitiful. I'm glad they are both in a good home now.

Ooooohhhh, how sweet. Sandy looks quite embarrassed that you posted that picture of him on the WORLD WIDE WEB with the horrid thing around his head. As if!! :) He is such a sweetie. And Mr. T looks just like my Oliver, and Stormy before that. He looks quite pleased with himself - nothing is going to get him down! Either one of them ^..^ - power to the meowers!

Any news on the donation thing? You asked about Sampson in another thread and I was so caught up in my own worries that I didn't get back to you. He had dental surgery. There was a horrible, nasty growth in his mouth at the very back so I had no way of knowing until he started drooling. They were afraid it was cancer, but it was just a very infected tooth and his body attacked the infection but instead of making it better, it made it worse. It is a problem associated with, most likely, his terrible case of rhinovirus as a kitten (he would not have lived if I hadn't adopted him and gotten him care). Some of the virus seems to remain in their bodies so 11 years later, he is suffering the effects of those darned bugs that have been dormant in his body. He is doing much better, 3 teeth out and the growth gone. Just lots of healing and special care until the inflammation is gone and his weight gets back up. He is doing much better than he was a week ago.

Lots of extra love to your sweeties from me!

Oh my how adorable both boys are. I want to keep both of them safe and happy forever!!

I'm sure with the love you and your DH have already shown them and I know will continue to show them (not to mention Catheland!) they will be strong and happy before we know it.

Kisses to both of them and hugs to you!!!

Work has picked up and it's been about 3 days since I've been near my computer. But, all this time, I've been wondering (and my receipt from Middletown came today) about Sandy and Mr. T (and I am very happy Sampson is okay). How could anyone do THAT to those little darlings. Shana's right, Sandy (what an appropriate name) does look humiliated - and tired. To go from horrific abuse to more love and attention than a poor critter ever knew existed in the world has to be exhausting - and confusing.

I have to ask, how's the money situation? Does it look like donations are going to at least come close to paying for all this? Did your local news ever pick up the story? If not, maybe you can tell us how to email them. If they got a whole mess of emails from concerned people from all over the world (who met Cathe.com!) they'd have to wonder just what all this concern is about and run the story (=more donations).

SirenSongWoman - Great idea about us bombarding the news! I think we should get together and do that. I just don't understand why somebody who takes the initiative to not just save these animals from immediate harm but then to also bear the burden of paying for it should be punished by not being able to take more money! I know there is the option for a personal website, and that is great too, but it is goofy that the vet can't take anymore and Lori should not be burdened, too, with setting up a website and dealing with donations! x( Ugh! Politics, rules, laws - some just don't make sense at all!

Hello Everyone!

Things are going okay here - we think we've figured out why poor Sandy holds his poo/pee. First, when a cat hunkers down to pee in a cat box, he/she bends their back legs down - and he can't do that - it probably hurts. I figured this out yesterday when he peed standing up! I was just so happy he went that I was cheering.

I took him back into the vet's office this morning because yesterday I gave him a break from his collar and I thought he ripped some stitches out, but they were fine. They think the reason he's not using the box regularly without some stimulation is because the collar prevents him from smelling the litter. They put him in a box and took the collar off and he went crazy and poop and peed for them. He has a cough that sounds pretty bad right now, but the vet said he has no temp and his lungs are clear - she said to give him cough syrup! (I would never have thought they could have that!)

The last total I got from Donna, we had gotten in about $300 or so, and still have about a $600 balance on our bill. This is probably a total that's BEFORE everyone's checks arrived - some may still be on their way. I'm hoping it will come close to paying all of the bill but I'll keep you posted as things go. In the mean time, we're hoping more funds will roll in because Sandy MAY need additional surgery in the future to remove the pins from his legs and I imagine that will be a couple $100 at least.

I have an update on the donation issue.

I spoke with two attorneys and two CPAs locally and they all agreed that me taking donations personally is perfectly legal (which totally shocked me). They said that as long as I keep accurate records, separate accounts, and count the contributions as income on my taxes, I can take donations personally. I have to stress that they are NOT tax deductible. So, hubby and I have put out collection buckets. We took most of them into Morgantown (where WVU is) to get the most exposure - but the one local store that we put one out in had about $2 in it so far. Hopefully the Morgantown ones will do better. We've also opened an entirely separate checking and savings account to make the donation deposits to.

The news crews never returned my calls. I didn't pursue it yet because I hadn't spoken to the attorneys/CPAs yet. I plan to contact them again, but we're working on a website and we want to be able to give that website on the news story - that way if they won't give us the chance to ask for contributions/donations, we can give them our website and DH is trying to set it up so there is a donation button linked in the site that goes directly to paypal.

I also have paperwork from one of the CPA's on nonprofit organization status, but I've not had a chance to read it yet. That is something that I'm interested in getting, but isn't in effect at this time.

Thank you all for your concern and your generosity. I will keep you posted on Sandy and Mr. T, and when the site is up I will let you all know so you can check it out.

:)

Reese, that's a great idea about a website. The pictures are great, and the cats are beautiful.

Did I tell you I received a receipt from the clinic and someone there drew a big green happy face and wrote Thank you! in green marker. I thought that was so sweet! A lovely personal touch. I'm so glad I was able to help in a small way.

You and your DH are angels!

Ditto everything Nancy said! Thank you for posting the pictures. Your babies are very sweet and I'm sure they're very blessed to have found a home with you.

Reese, do you always take your rescues to the same clinic? I wonder if they'd set something up for you there, which we could donate to directly or something. I know you've worked all this out but I haven't kept up with all your updates. I just thing some folks would like to put it on a credit card instead of a check. I don't know. It just seems like if you keep rescuing (which we all want to support!) you will keep facing vet bills and it would be nice to not always have to worry about it even after Sandy and Mr T have healed and you're moving onto your next rescue. :)

They really are special little ones, aren't they?

Anyway, I'm thrilled to hear Sandy is working on his way to figuring out what to do in a litterbox when he finds it! ;) I remember when our Gracie was a kitten and she just didn't seem to jump very much at all; it made me sad and I mentioned it to my dad and he said "I bet it still hurts from her surgery." DUH. She's the best jumper *ever* now, LOL! I know Sandy and Mr T will each suprise you with what their talents are.

Lori, can you post the websites of you local news stations here? I'm serious about bombarding them with requests to cover this story. It has great newsworthiness (bad guy who hurts animals vs. Kind couple who saved them but are now burdened with huge veterinarian bills...). I know you are very busy but if I knew whom to contact I, and others here, WOULD email them about this. If you could post that info here I think WE can get them off their butts :)

Stacey

Well, I told them that any of the donations we got above and beyond what we get for Sandy and Mr. T we'd like to have spill over into our other rescue costs and then form a credit. They said that collecting donations above what we get for Sandy and Mr. T would be fraud. One of the attorney's I spoke with said that if someone sent a check to them with my account # on it wouldn't be fraud. She didn't understand what they meant by that because if say - my father for instance - went there and tried paying off my bill - they wouldn't refuse HIS check. I think the thing is, I don't think the vet's office wants to be involved due to the accounting issues. I think that they would have to show the funds as THEIR income rather than me, and they would have to pay taxes on it. I don't know...

If the funds come to us, we can keep better track of things too. If you don't like sending a check, when the site is up, you'll be able to use paypal to send funds, I if I'm not mistaken you can set that up to come off of your credit card.

Hope this helps.

Hi Stacey,

If you're interested in our local news stations, they are www.wboy.com and www.wdtv.com.

Maybe all of your kind hearts writing to them will inspire them to seek us out for a story.

If it works, I will let you all know right away, and I will link any story they do to all of you to see. :)

Lori

I dont know if any of you will recall this, but I've posted a few notes in the past because I had gained weight. Since around January of 2007 or so, I've put on over 20 pounds. None of my clothes fit that I had before, and I work in a professional office so I have a BUNCH.

I'm selling them all on ebay.

When I have auctions listed (which will be later this week), I will post a link to one of the auctions on open discussion and you can check the other listings out from that one (show sellers other items - or whatever that link is).

If you're a size 10 - it will be your lucky day. I have around 10-15 suits that were all around $250-$400 a piece - half of which have NEVER been worn.

More details will follow....

I don't see any photos.:-(
Just boxes with the message "this image or video has been moved or deleted"

Lori,
Have you thought about contacting the animal rescue site? They often have little blurbs about animals in need of help, including donations for care. In fact, the other day when I logged on, I saw the top half of a call for donations labeled "help cat thrown..." and I thought maybe it was about Sandy ("...againt wall") (but it was about another cat thrown from a high window).

Doesn't hurt to ask.

OMG WHAT ARE THESE "PEOPLE" THINKING?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!

I have to stop coming into this thread. I cannot IMAGINE what kind of horrid thing might possess a person to pick up an animal (much less a fuzzy cutie patootie creature like a kitten) and THROW anything.

Sorry for the minor rant.
