Perfume at the gym

Why oh why do people do this? Is this replacing deoderant or something? Normally I don't care what people want to do to themselves, but when I am inhaling toxic levels of this stuff...grrrr.

For that matter, I cannot stand when I can smell someone from across the room, down the hall, or whatever. I'm just not a big perfume person. However, something really light that can only be smelled close up is acceptable ;)

Okay, weird random thought for the day over. Carry on.

I'm not gaining weight. I'm retaining food.

I'm with you Debbie! I had a perfum wearing dingbat (an older lady, too - not a teeny bopper who thinks that if they can't smell her across the room, they won't see her) siddle up to the guy who was on the spin bike nxt to me and talk to him for 20 minutes pretty much standing right in front of me. I thought I would keel over...

Oh yuck, I hate when that happens! Aftershave too..........and when it's combined w/the reek of sweat it makes me downright nauseaus.

Perfume mixed with sweat AND cigarette smoke is even better. Had one of these next to me at the gym, I thought I am going to faint - one of the reasons why I prefer to workout at home :)

I agree, perfume is bad. But, B.O and pooh breath are even worse. I don't know what century we're living in, but some people just don't get that they have to brush their teeth in the morning or put on deodorant before going somewhere where they know they are going to sweat. It just doesn't make sense to me.

Older women at gyms are wicked bad for this...WTH! The sense of smell must be the first to go! I can't tolerate strong perfume at the best of times let alone when my rate of respiration is through the roof...turns my stomachx( Our gym has just implemented a policy about strong odors and perfumes but the ones most likely to offend are least likely to comply.

people that workout hard know better than to wear strong perfumes i dont really care for gyms and workout at home more

Hey, Deb! Sorry about that. I just wear a tiny dab of Be Delicious on my upper chest where it can waft up to my nose when those big sweaty guys who always seem to be trying to save money on deodorant workout next to me. It's simple: self-defense. I wear so little though, and the fragrance is so light, (smells like green apples), I doubt you would notice me. :)

I hate to say this but I don't wear deoderant to work out. I do work out at home so that is a BIG difference. I think sweating is good for your body. The key is to shower QUICKLY afterward :) I should mention that I rarely wear it anyway. I just don't like the chemicals in it and I typically don't smell when I sweat so It's OK. Unless of course I eat a lot of meat. Then I really need to get out the deoderant stick. Yuck!

And my final thought..... How about the ladies that go to the gym in full make up? That is just plain dumb if you ask me.

I tend to refer to perfume wearers as "offenders", mostly because those that I always seem to be surrounded with, apparently bathe in whatever their chosen "fragrance" is.

My motto?
If you can wear that much perfume, I should be allowed to carry around a fire hose and douse your a**! LOL!

Although Ia m not a fan of the perfume bath I do find it far preferable to the stench of rank stanky pitts.

On a different odor... there is a woman at my gym that farts constantly in class - and the silent ones, nothing you can hear. It is awful! Everytime I see her I try to set up my step on the other side of the room and try to avoid being in front of her if possible. And speaking of perfume - there is an elderly lady at my gym that comes to step class on Saturday morning always 30 mins late and dressed like she's going shopping or something. She has her make-up, jewelry, and perfume on. Never uses a step. I've never seen anything like it.

I agree! Your body needs to sweat when you workout! I can't imagine putting on antiperspirant right before a cardio sweatfest - that's counterintuitive to me. I'll put it on afterward (after a shower), but not before a workout.

And the perfume ladies at the gym - ugh. There's one of them in my Yoga class. She always shows up to class 30 minutes late (at that point, why bother? And don't get me started on how rude it is to tromp into the middle of a focused Yoga class!) and she is just drenched in perfume. Nothing like gagging your way through a few sun salutations. I always pray that she won't roll out her mat near me. I'm not always lucky, though.

She usually stands in front of a fan - that's why I said in front of. I don't know her name and when me and my co-worker refer to her we call her stinky and we know who the other is talking about.

Isn't that kind of the point of perfume?: so that people want to get closer to better smell what they just barely caught a whiff of? It should say 'come closer,' not 'stay as far away as possible.'

I have, however, known people who seem to wear enough of it to cover up some other odor, as if they lived in the 17th century or something.

I can't stand most perfume (and, even worse at times, after shave).

Oh this topic is so timely! My husband and I were playing tennis recently and there was a woman who had such strong perfume on that we could smell it all the way over on our court! We were even at outdoour courts!! I can't imagine being very near this person like in a gym setting. Yuck! I felt sorry for her doubles partner. It was all I could do not to say... Umm... could you go easy on the perfume? Fortunately, we were nearly finished or I would have said something.

I also would prefer perfume over body odor. The rationale of not wearing deoderant because it is healthier for the body to sweat is a little bit of a stretch.

Even if you wear deoderant/anti-perspirant under your arms to control odor, you will not inhibit your ability to sweat elsewhere where odor is not as easily produced. Have courtesy for those working out around you:) LOL
