Traildoggie

Cathlete
good morning.

the mountain bike yesterday was lovely. yes, we still have a lot of snow in the mountains at fairly low elevation. this was probably around 3200 feet though we forgot to bring an altimeter along. we will ride the road full distance when it melts out. hiking here does not really open up until sometime in july. skills on snow are important factor for hiking here. we got a good snowpack this year. some of it is permanent snow and glaciers.

cathy that's good mileage for a day. I haven't been to a zoo in decades.

not sure what I will do today. its raining a lot, very humid for here. unpleasant. way too wet for garden work. I did really well on my lettuce crop this year. I am planting lettuce in containers on the deck and thinning and transplanting to the garden when an about an inch tall. it works so much better than direct seeding. spacing is important to getting good healthy plants and this works beautifully. as usual some things worked great and others not so much. broccoli is struggling this year.

Today is my rest day. I did a short 15 minute yoga practice, but that’s it for me. We finally have a day without rain and gray skies!

Waving hello to everyone. Have a great day.

Hi Everyone,

This morning I did a 45 minute Peloton ride. I've been busy with work and projects we are doing at home. I'm sorry I haven't been posting as much.

Valerie-the mountain bike ride sounds wonderful! Chris and I are talking about getting out on our bikes soon.

Carolyn-Hope you are having a nice rest day!

Cathy-That is a lot of miles for the day!

No workout today and I doubt tomorrow as I have to go to my dentist that is quite a bit of distance away. My daughter and her husband came over this afternoon and visited as they will be out of town because she has some medical conferences or something and will be out of state on Father's day. I made a pot of taco soup that is a paleo recipe and served it up with avocado, cheddar, and sour cream options. No tortillas.
We purchased a tall 48 gallon aquarium yesterday and are getting things together to set it up.

Valerie, nice that you got a ride in yesterday. I was looking at some sensors(out of curiosity) that can be purchased with certain Garmin watches, which mine is one of. They have them for cadence or speed or both. There is also supposed to be foot pods for measuring mileage indoors. I don't ride outdoors so I am not sure that would work indoors. The cadence sensor attaches to the crank arm?? and the the speed sensor attaches in the center of the wheel from the looks of the pictures.
It sounds like you are doing well with your garden. I remember having years that were really good and some where I felt we did so much work for so little harvested.

Carolyn, good for you getting in a short yoga practice. Yesterday I got up and had forgot that the sprinklers were supposed to run and I had the guy coming to mow. I shut them down, but it had already watered most of the yard. I told my husband it was so soggy and I don't have it water long. He said it rained in the night. So, that was a huge waste. We had thunder this evening, but no rain so far.

Judy, nice that you got a Peloton ride in. I hope you get your projects done soon.

I ended up doing a partial workout yesterday. did a series of dips, 50 knee push ups, tricep push ups, curls after the warm up from hard strikes. then did the core 1 workout. in between sets I do some yoga stretches since carolyn keeps reminding us about yoga! thank you, its a good reminder. it is still raining and cool here so we are the exception. very wet here especially for this late in the season. for some reason, slugs are not too bad this year and haven't attacked my lettuce with the usual intensity. some years its almost not worth it but this year has been reasonable.

Judy I wish you found a place to ride regularly. it's a hard activity to do and enjoy if time gaps are too large. your skills feel awkward until you do things a few times. I don't understand why there is so little overlap between different kinds of exercise, but there is. we ride all year so we dont have that difficult first ride or two when everything feels clumsy and harder than it should be.
mountain biking is too messy here to attach an indoor counting device . bikes are totally mud covered after most rides. we hose the bikes off almost every time since all that dried mud will make things not work. the odometer/speedometer devices give trip mileage, overall mileage, speed and some other data but no "step" count. also doesn't account for elevation gain and loss. for us, that's significant. we are proud of ourselves when we go up and down 2000 feet or more in elevation.

the sensor is a little wireless dime size thing that attaches to a front wheel spoke. tough! the battery operated screen device is on the handle bar. they work pretty well and survive a lot of bashing, water, mud. I'm thinking ours are mostly Cateye brand? we have one sensor on each bike so 6 total. all aren't the same. they last for a few years and die suddenly, so we have multiple generations, models, brands. we don't get elaborate ones since we need so many. it is not reasonable to swap the same one back and forth between bikes. it's tricky to get it attached in just the right place on a spoke so it tracks well. you do NOT want to go thru that process every time. got to spin the wheel and make sure its getting the data right. also different wheel size makes a difference on how it calculates use data. my bike wheels are smaller than DH's and mt bikes and road bikes are different. it boils down to needing a device set to each bikes dimensions for data to be accurate.

Valerie-I wish we had a good place to ride regularly too. It's much easier to be a runner around here than a cyclist. It's just such an endeavor to be able to get to a decent bike trail and ends up taking us more time driving too and from than we spend on the bikes. We can still bike in the neighborhoods around our condo but that's not really a great ride and definitely not like mountain biking. Even if we committed to driving to a trail regularly, we'd probably only be able to get there once a week, if that much. You are right too, it's not that enjoyable if we don't go regularly as each time we ride it's like starting all over. Chris and I got new running shoes this weekend and will probably be doing more running than biking this summer.

Today I did part of After Burn, the premix that includes intervals 1-5. I did not feel like going all out with the full workout. My time was 32 minutes with 189 calories burned. Average heart rate was 120 and maximum heart rate was 152.

Judy, great job with the 45 minute Peloton ride. I’m sure that it is disappointing that your don’t have a good location for outdoor riding. At least you can enjoy running.

Diane Sue, that’s great that yourdaughter and her husband were able to visit yesterday. I love taco soup with those toppings.

Valerie, your partial workout sounds like it was pretty good. Great job including the yoga stretches .

Hello to Cathy and Deb.

judy didn't intend for you to feel bad! we are retired, so longer drives are Ok if needed. we are lucky we have the tree farm near by, and much of the year its perfect to keep the mountain biking skills active. we didn't have time to do this much when we were still working. we understand most activity is better if you do it regularly, so each time isn't starting over. especially mountain biking. we both have quit running except for short bits on the treadmill. too much impact, better to keep it to less.

No work out today. I had to get up early and go to the dentist for my routine check up etc. that I have not had for the last two years. I left an hour early to make sure I got there in time and arrived 15 minutes early. Not bad I guess. I will be doing this with appointments even further away 3 times next month. Eventually I will hopefully get through all of them. I may do CDorner's newest mobility workout today that appears to be larger movement based sometime later today. I will be back in awhile. Need to take care of the dog and my husband will be up in a bit.

Valerie, that is interesting how those sensors work. I wondered about trying to move one from one bike to another as the description said that you could and it sounded easy.

Judy, I have seen more runners out around where we are now. I suppose because here there is a lot of construction and you just don't see them out on the road. Where we were before we had bicycle lanes and a lot would either follow the trails out through the woods or across the main road and up around the lake.

Carolyn, nice work on Afterburn. I forget so many of those workouts.

diane sue most sensors are wireless. older ones had a wire. the sensor on the wheel has to be in the right spot to track every revolution of the wheel. if its not lined up right, it won't work, or will work intermittently. depending on the size of the wheel, it calculates mileage but you have to program it for the right wheel size. bigger wheels travel further per revolution than small wheels, so you need to program it to the right wheel size or readings will be inaccurate. our bikes all have different size wheels ( 29", 27.5", 27") so we would need to change it every time we moved the sensor between bikes. much better to buy one for each bike, since we ride often. if we rode a few times I year , that would be different. once the sensor is lined up, it stays in place usually. it can get jostled out of place on a bike rack.
I get used to seeing how fast I'm going or how far I've ridden and it feels really WRONG if the sensor isn't working and I don't get credit in the total mileage for my ride

Did 30 min on the elliptical at level 9.

I have not done a weigh in for WW for a few weeks and last time I was up about 2 lbs from goal. I tried to focus more and weighed in today and I am one lb below goal. I have not been this weight since sometime in the 1980's. I am pleased! I can very easily afford to lose a few more pounds, we are NOT talking "skeletal "here.

running is so much easier to fit in and I used to love it. I worry I can't deal with the impact and that I am better off using less pounding to not cause my joints to deteriorate. i can see that my feet knees and ankles are not like when I was younger so I don't want to push it.

I went for my mammogram this morning. The appointment went smoothly and I should get the results in myChart in a couple of days. I feel like everything is going well so I am not worried. Next month I will see my breast specialist. My appointment was at 9:15, so I did not get to work out.

Diane Sue, I’m getting caught up on medical appointments too. I still need to get an eye exam and see my gynecologist. I will be up to date with everything after that.

Valerie, congratulations on your WW success. Hopefully it’s feeling like a lifestyle change now rather than a “diet”. Great job with 30 minutes on the elliptical.

Have a wonderful day everyone.

This morning I did CDorner Great Tunes cardio Tabata, 39 minutes, 237 calories, heart rate 147/179, 3,648 steps. I had fun with this one and only the last tabata went to the floor and she showed modifiers for every tabata, and for the floor one she showed doing a Russian twist instead of plank jack knee ins and stand. the cardio tabatas are two moves done 4 times and you move on to the next two moves and a fun variety of music. I then did her Cardio stretch and sweat mobility flexibility which was 30 minutes(it says 39 minutes but she talks first) heart rate 103/145, 94 calories, 189 steps. Total time 69 minutes, 331 calories, 3,837 steps. I used cardio for the setting when I did the mobility workout today. I never know exactly where to put the more active ones as I use yoga when she says relaxing and stretch in the description.

Best of intentions the last few days, clearly didn't get me here! Sunday I did Advanced Step Choreography, then yesterday, I just did not want to workout. Ended up stretching for awhile and then I had a dentist appointment in the afternoon. I did manage to get in my steps for the day. Today I went shopping so no workout again.

I have been using the Commit30 Fitness Journal for the last year and my new one came the other day, so I'm going to take it along on our trip to the UP next week and get it started for July. Really need to get my focus back. It's not like I'm doing nothing, just not a whole lot that's helpful. LOL

Valerie I think by the end of his summer break Derek and I will have done 10 zoos. I know he really wants to go to Fort Worth over Thanksgiving break, but I'm just not sure I'm up to tackling that this year, though I would love to see Nick before Christmas. Congrats on getting below your goal weight! When you do things like 50 pushups are you doing them straight through or in groups?

Carolyn great job with the yoga and After Burn premix. Glad your mammogram went smoothly. Boys do summer doctor visits since we always did them then for sports physicals, and we found out when Nick broke his foot a few years ago, that if you haven't seen your doctor in a year getting referrals is incredibly hard. Can't do eye exams until December and no way to know if he'll be here for that, though I'll make an appointment. So, much easier for me since my schedule is generally pretty open.

Judy great job on the Peloton ride! You do a great job of fitting in workouts when you can.

Diane Sue, what are you planning to put in your aquarium. We had one for a few years that the neighbors gave us, but when the fish had passed away, I just didn't feel like dealing with it anymore and they had someone else who was interested in it. What will you be putting in it? Hope your dentist appointment went smoothly. Great job on the cardio tabata workout and stretch.

I made the Vegetable Jambalaya form the Fix it with Food for dinner and really like it. I went back and had a little more for a snack. It is meatless, but I might try cooking up some shrimp and toss in tomorrow. I bought some shrimp for another of the recipes, but did not find the rice paper wrappers and I forgot it called for rice vermicelli. I used to use the vermicelli once in awhile. Also could not find phyllo dough for the spinach and phyllo pies that have feta cheese in them along with the spinach and seasoning. I had stopped at Walmart Market after my dentist visit and they did not have much and the self check out stations were not working and the supervisor was working herself to death with a long line of people waiting to check out. It was ridiculous. I should have waited till I got home and went to the Supercenter near me. Plus, I went there for Zero sugar gatorade for my husband and they did not have that or power ade. Neither did the Walmart by me or Dollar General. I guess it got hot and it was all sold out or something.

Valerie, it is funny how we get caught up in the numbers when we work out. I would want to know how fast and mileage if I was riding. My surgeon that took care of my torn miniscus said to cross train. He said running is bad for the knees. He was a runner and had to quit. One of my friends husband that had a wrist injury a while back said his doctor told him that they should quit running and stick with the rebounder and Total gym and dumbbells they are using. They both used the treadmill a lot. They are both my age and retired military. I tried out their Jump Sport and the bounce is so quiet and softer than my Urban Rebounder with springs. That is great that you lost more weight. I bet you were pleased when you weighed in.

Carolyn, I did my mammogram after the first of the year because it was originally scheduled when I had Covid. I have to go for eye appointments twice a year for my hydroxychloraquine so I get an eye appointment whether I want one or not. I just did that one. I still have the pulmonologist and arthritis center next month.

Cathy, would you be driving to Fort Worth if you went or flying? We are going somewhere in August, but I don't know what we want to do yet. We will drive. I don't know what type of fish we want yet. My husband has always liked arranging the aquariums to make them look natural inside. He has been purchasing things and bought a wood table that is sturdier than the stand that came with the aquarium. Finding a good background was not easy since it is tall and not a long tank. I have been boiling drift wood today. I don't know why it wasn't already treated and ready to use. My husband bought it on Amazon. I think the rest of the things will come tomorrow. We won't do salt water this time. Probably start with some smaller fish to get the bacterial cycle set up and things going well first. We have had so many aquariums and types of fish. I hated the walking bat fish. It was hideous looking. Loved to hop around the tank in front when I sat down to eat.

Cathy I do sets of 25 knee push ups at a time. I do them forward leaning , with my butt down. Sometimes several sets with a short break between. And other times I’ll do push ups/ dips or push ups/curls alternating. I don’t do toe push ups much because I get a sore spot on My right shoulder. I don’t get sore with knee push ups so I feel if I do enough of them, it will be as good as toe push ups . Maybe I do some kind of form mistake when on toes . I still do toes but not as many and more carefully. To avoid injuring it again. I do lots of tricep push ups too.
yesterday I did perfect pump upper and the ab workout The abs went much better than. Before even the piston move .
carolyn good wishes for a negative scan. I am all caught up on medical tests. All is ok.
We saw a doe and a tiny fawn in our yard yesterday. It could barely walk it was so tiny! Youngest one I’ve ever seen. Must have only been hours old. I saw a buck with velvety antlers a few days before. Wild kingdom!

This morning I did a timesaver from Rock’m Sock’m kickboxing. That was 35 minutes and 266 calories burned. My average heart rate was 135 and maximum heart rate was 166. My mammogram results were available last night and everything is good. It’s always a relief to see it in writing.

Diane Sue, nice job with CDORNER Cardio Tabata and Cardio Stretch.

Cathy, great job with Advanced Step Choreography. I’m not familiar with the Commit30 journal, but I use a logbook to keep track of my workouts. I like to refer back to them periodically to see how I am doing.

Valerie, nice job with Perfect Pump Upper Body and Abs. You are impressive with the number of push ups that you do. I will usually do some on my toes, then go to my knees. I must confess that I only do tricep push-ups if I have to. I don’t like them.

Hello to Judy and Deb. Have a wonderful day everyone.

Carolyn wonderful to get back negative results on a mamm. really Fast results too.

we mt biked this morning. awful drive on a totally pot holed road. our expensive bike rack is dying and will probably qualify for warranty replacement. if racks are in short supply like bicycles are, it might be a while.
the trail itself had too many blowdowns across it. we went about 3/4 of a mile steep uphill. had to crawl over downed 4 tree clusters. its not a big deal on foot, but dragging mt bikes over branchy trees on a slope is tough, plus you need to stop and drag them back over on the way down too. decided it was not be worth it to continue. rode back down and instead rode up the road itself toward the pass but got to solid snow. the road is washed out somewhere, so no traffic but it was a fair bit of uphill work. rode back down to our car. then drove back to another trail and went maybe half a mile on it but it was too difficult. brushy and wet, not good. so back down and went to a 4th spot, an actual mt biking area. it was fine but too small. we rode the whole thing in 45 minutes with some repeated loops. an area designed for people to drive to the top, and ride down steep advanced level trails, and then get shuttled back to their cars. like a downhill ski area. not what we like to do. so that was enough! ended up only riding 5-6 miles total but it was a substantial workout, and we learned a few places NOT to go again.

Carolyn, I always like tricep push ups! I do them using the corners of the step.... that position works so well for me I sub it all the time. I also do dips and kickbacks, and kickbacks with a band. I like tricep exercises more than most others. due to arthritic changes, I have difficulty getting my hands to go flat, so I do most push ups holding onto the feet of a step or corners of a bench. the bones in my hands and wrists are pretty sad looking so I do work arounds to not aggravate things.

diane sue, aquariums are so lovely. I've never had one but love to watch the fish swimming. so relaxing. I know nothing about aquariums though. Yes, 1 pound below goal, :p but it is possible I might slowly lose a little more. I wasn't focused on losing, thought maintaining was the best I could expect.

I was having technical difficulties yesterday doing what I wanted using On Demand because our wifi was being glitchy. Not totally going out, but messing with things enough to keep freezing my workout. Ended up doing IMAX3 step combos only and Step Boss Bonus Abs. Today I'm taking Derek to work and walking at the zoo, then going to my parents to give my Dad his Father's Day gift. Tomorrow is Derek's 20th birthday and I've conspired with his GF behind his back. She's planning to come up, but she's told him she couldn't, but would come soon. Also, sent her a bunch of photos to use for the collage she's making him.

Valerie, that bike ride/rides sounds like it was a heck of a workout! I'm with Carolyn that I only do the tricep pushes when they are in a workout, not on my own. I agree that using the corners of the step is the way to go. I could do 5-10 decent toe push ups if I have to, but generally do them on my knees.

Diane Sue, great job with the I love aquariums and hope to have another one someday, but probably smaller, that one was a lot of work. We would be driving to Fort Worth. I'm really not a fan of flying and even less so these days. If Nick is able to come home for Christmas, he'll probably have to fly. He'd spend four days of the trip on the road, two each way, and it's potentially a lousy time of year for weather and he'd be crossing a lot of weather patterns. I can go through at least three different ones just driving up to Marquette!

Carolyn, great job with the Rock'm Sock'm kickboxing! Glad to hear your mammogram results were good! This is the journal I have https://commit30.com/product/fitness-journal/

I used to fly a whole heck of a lot and prefer not to, especially right before busy overcrowded overbooked holidays.
I am a little sore from perfect pump and plus the ride yesterday. we will do a road ride this morning since its sunny and pleasant. it hasn't been hot here like much of the west, so we want to get in outdoor exercise while we can. Hiking is still a very snowy process here and I'm getting too old for it. plus if its accessible, its too crowded to be enjoyable.
weather can change quickly. its been so dry and hot I'm uneasy about how the wildfire season will progress. fires far away generate a smoke plume that blankets everything. not fun traveling or exercising outdoors when it gets like that, and its pretty clear this will be an ongoing problem every year unless the western drought situation improves drastically. Fat chance of that happening. fires in california, oregon generate a smoke plume that travels further north and east , in addition to all the devastation where the fires are. British columbia has vast forests that burn too, and WA has plenty of fire potential.

I'm trying to tack on short informal upper body workouts several days a week on days I don't do a formal workout. a fast series of simple exercises since a lot of what I'm doing in summer is riding and hiking that does cardio but not weights. I run out of time and enthusiasm for a 45 min workout, but 10-15 min is easier to stick in.

Lori and Deb, you are missed. Hope you can check in once in a while.
