Pentagenarians & Beyond: WB 3/17

Hi Everyone,

I'll be back later today to catch up on posts. I ended up working more than planned this week and haven't been able to keep up with much else. Yesterday was my first over 30,000 step day. I worked 8 hours and was up to 23,000 steps when I left there at 3:30.

Judy

Good morning,

No workout yesterday. Last night we wend to a dinner/theater place we have here and saw "Same Time Next Year". Such a great play!

Valerie, not sure if John actually has upgraded electronics, all we ever get as an upgrade is the All Weather package. Does your radio just use a screen and no station selection buttons? I think that is very distracting and dangerous.

Carolyn, nice that you have a weekend with no rain!

Diane Sue, that is great that Gertie calms down like that. A good thing to have when there are times she may be nervous or scared. Had to laugh with her lying down when Cathe said "relax". Kylee will go into a down position when she hears the command, no matter where it comes from. I wish I would have gotten a simpler dryer, like you did. Mine has an all electronic panel and too many choices.

Judy, Yeah! 30,000 steps! You will be getting a lot of lower body work done without doing a workout!

Hi to Lori,

Take care,

Deb, Dh set the channels on this car. he didn't complain so it must be easier than the clock setting. the channel #s appear as a vertical band and you touch the one you want. it is similar to older radios where the presets were on numbered buttons but vertical and shows the station like "104.5" depending on the channel, it shows the name of the song and artist while playing. trying to remember if it has a slot for CD's. I think it does. ( my older Forester does, but a disappearing feature) much of our driving is out of radio signal. we did not buy Sirius. too much area has tree cover, mountains, hills. it chops up the satellite signal until its too annoying to listen to.
I took the day off yesterday. we had our HOA meeting. we won almost all of our court decision against the homeowner who is trying to rent his very large house for commercial use. he is prohibited from doing most of what he was doing. he will be allowed to rent out rooms like a B&B. there was a higher court decision that set precedent so we decided not to appeal further. not perfect but we voted yesterday and talked with our attorney and feel its the best choice to let the lower court ruling stand.

judy I want to thank you again for the link to Open Office. I use parts of it regularly. it works well, just what I needed. I don't do enough to spend annually on an expensive Office product.
wow that is a lot of walking. nice not to be locked to a desk all day.

Today is my rest day and I’m keeping it low key. I often cook a special meal on Sunday, but today I’m making a simple dinner without much preparation required. I’ve been looking through some of my older workouts and wondering what was I thinking when I bought some of them! I found a Kristen McGee pilates dvd that I might try soon. I was looking at a YouTube video with Angela Speir and I realized that that the two are very similar.

Judy, 30,000 steps is an amazing amount of walking in one day. Although those stores are so huge I can understand how that would happen. Hopefully you won’t have too many long 8 hour days. That would turn a part time job into full time.

Diane Sue, that’s great that the Rev’d Up Rumble dvd arrived so quickly. I hope you like it. I never thought of Hard Strikes as being harder than Cathe’s other kickboxing workouts, but that might be because the kickboxing segment is shorter then she does the conditioning drills. Of course, using the boxing gloves really increases the intensity.

Deb, your evening at the dinner theater sounds wonderful.

Valerie, that’s good news about your HOA victory over the problem neighbor. Hopefully he will follow the rules in the future.

Lori, I hope things are going well for you. Have a nice day everyone.

Carolyn thank you. we had double victories. this owner now has a permanent injunction against the activities he was promoting and has to pay us back our court costs. he has a slew of rules to live by to be able to rent it as a B&B. we will keep close tabs on his activities for a very long time yet, but it is a win for us. we are lucky to live far away from this property, but everyone stuck together and paid to stop this transgression as much as possible we will amend covenants to prevent from happening again. when they were written in the 1980's no one could have foreseen the internet and the B&B home rental market.
we also have gotten the totally dump property cleaned up. it is just outside our association and was a total cesspool. the local tribe who runs the casino bought the property. it got cleaned out with an backhoe and is now looking cleaner than in the last 20 years. I'm pleased because I complained about it but found the names and contacts who made it happen. the squeaky wheel and all that. reported license numbers of vehicles dumped there and generally was a frequent complainer with specifics. we have no clue what the tribe will do with a vacant several acres but nothing could be as bad as it was. yard work today, no workout.

Today I did 4 DS Legs, and I added on the calves and core sections. I'm planning on doing more of the 4 DS weight workouts this week.

Working at Home Depot has been more challenging than I anticipated. This job is way more than watering plants, and the shifts have been all over the place, not the simple "6-10" I was led to believe.
I'm not at all happy with the 8 hour shifts and they have me scheduled for 3 of them in a row, April 5th, 6th and 7th. Apparently that's "Spring Black Friday" for the garden center. All of the scheduling and choosing your availability is done online so you can't really talk to anyone about it. They require you to schedule days off 90 days in advance, that is done online too. I now know why Home Depot has so much turnover and is constantly in a state of hiring new people. I am glad this is a temporary position.

Deb-That sounds like a great evening! Working at Home Depot can definitely be a workout on it's own.

Valerie-I'm so glad that you like Open Office. It's really a nice program. The steps I've been getting at Home Depot have been great, more than I've ever had before. I do like that part of the job.

Carolyn-Thanks! Yes, it is starting to feel like a full time job. Great job with Hard Strikes! I might do that one this week too.

Hi to Lori & Diane Sue!

Judy

Good morning,

No workout yesterday.

Valerie, yes, that is what John's radio screen looks like....I will ask if he preset anything. It doesn't look like it because he is scrolling to find the stations he always listens to. He probably does not know how to preset. Good news on the court decision!

Carolyn, it looks like you are looking to trim down your workout collection? Maybe sell on Ebay or donate to a library?

Judy, the 4DS series is a good one. I like all the weight work, but only the KB cardio. I think the rest is pretty high impact or step? That scheduling /days off practice does not sound very "employee friendly". No wonder they can't keep people long.

Hi to Lori & Diane Sue

Take care,

Deb if we drive somewhere today I'll try to take a look. we are going out with cousin and not sure who will be driving. I'm sure he has preset since I can see the numbers when we are driving. DH is a person who does everything immediately. he doesn't wait. he also doesn't discuss anything. I usually don't know what he's has done until after. he usually drives the new forester.

we are Ok with the court decision. it brings up HOAs in general need to upgrade their CC&Rs to protect themselves from this kind of thing. most HOA's would allow long term rentals, but short term rentals like for B&B weekends are a new category. according to a case here, they don't violate the rules. so we will have to monitor the property. if they violate rules, they will be in back in court. It puts the responsibility on the HOA to keep track of it. the main thing here is that if we wanted to appeal the decision, it would take several years to do it and in the meantime the violator would not be subject to any of the rules immediately. he'd be able to do whatever in the meantime. we did not want that.

Judy that is pretty rigid. 3 months in advance? off days are sometimes for reasons that come up suddenly, like medical issues or car problems. maybe there are good reasons for high turnover. I know the Lowes near here has many consistent employees but the HD is further and we don't use it that often.

Only yard work over the weekend. suddenly its spring and the snow is going bye bye.

Today I did Cardio Party which was 39 minutes and 295 calories burned. Average heart rate was 134 and maximum heart rate was 156. After that I did 2 segments from the Kristin McGee Beginner Pilates that I pulled out yesterday. The dvd has two 10 minute segments and two 20 minute segments. I did the two 10 minute segments of Core Warm Up and Core Connection for an additional 52 calories burned. Surprisingly my average heart rate was 97 and maximum heart rate was 159.

Judy, the Home Depot job must be very disappointing. I hope it gets better soon. Great job with 4 Day Split Legs.

Deb, I might donate a few dvds to the library, but I’m not likely to sell anything on eBay. I really wanted to remind myself about what was in the back of my cabinet that I had forgotten.

Hello to Lori, Valerie, and Diane Sue.

I was hoping Kelly would have her Lower Body Pyramid up this morning. I went ahead with Cardio and when I was done the pyramid workout was up so I did it too. Long workout today, but tomorrow will be short because I will be going to ladies game day and brunch in the morning.
I started with Lite Rev'd Up Rumble mish mosh Extreme #1 main with calorie crush twice, once at the start and once at the end, 57 minutes, 425 calories, met 8, heart rate average 134, max 158, 5,454 steps.
I then did Coffey Fit Raw lower body pyramid (ascending) , 40 minutes, met 6.0, 212 calories, heart rate 107 average, max 124, 570 steps. Total time was 97 minutes, calories burned 637. I really liked the Rev'd Rumble workout. It is really pretty easy for the main workout. I tried to ramp it up a bit. It is nice that it is all low impact (except the calorie crush)

Raw Lower Body Pyramid I am glad I stuck with Kellys weights with this. I am sure I will feel it later.
3 sets dumbbells kelly uses 12,15, and 20#
These are done each exercise is repeated through the pyramid 3 times and no rest timed at 30 seconds each set The warm up is short and does the moves without weights There are breaks at the end of each exercise grouping. Still not long.

Yesterday was a rest day and family day. I am already getting my week filled up with activities. I need to get busy on cleaning! I did not expect the arthritis center to get me in right away for my eye exam so I get my prescription refilled. I got up this morning and my low back hurt so bad that I had a hard time standing. I was stiff all over. Maybe it was because I ate terrible this weekend and no workout yesterday. My husband [icked me up blackberry cobbler Saturday at the dinner. Yesterday I made spaghetti for family dinner and ate a small helping with salad, but my daughter brought croissants !! She left the rest here. After I ate one with butter, I looked and they had 20 grams of fat in one. I shoved them in the freezer. Then my husband ordered pizza last night and cheese bread. Once I was around and stretched out this morning, the workout went fine and surprisingly so far my legs are only a little sore. So, I have been doing a lot of research on oxalates in veggies and foods. Mostly about kale and spinach. I read that it can cause joint pain and gout, as well as kidney and liver issues and stones. So, now I am worried as I supposedly have gout and I have eaten that stuff pretty much daily for years. Anyway, there is lots of conflicting stuff out there. One article mentioned celery in the list and I saw nuts on the list. I eat nuts in my salads and yogurt. Then I am reading articles on the Bulletproof site and they say to crush calcium and magnesium with the greens that have been steamed and make a smoothie. Somehow this does not sound pleasant. I like salad. Something about the magnesium and calcium absorbing the oxalates that are left after steaming and then they are excreted instead of forming the salts or whatever. Then I am looking over dietary things with the different probiotics and some causing histamine levels to rise and some downgrading histamine. Apparently I should not be eating yogurt and drinking kombucha tea. I will change things up a bit, and got a new histamine free probiotic. Will see if it helps these allergies. Right now tree pollen is making me cough and sneeze like crazy.

Judy, I am sorry the hours are so different than what you expected. I would have thought that Home Depot would be a good place to work for. When you expect short hours part time and get that much I can understand your not caring for it. 4 Day Split workouts are not so long and work well for weight workouts. Lots of good moves in them.

Carolyn, I guess I need to do Hard Strikes again. It seems I can just remember jacks and those fast foot shuffle things that always seemed tiring or something. I have not done it in quite awhile. Maybe it is not as bad as my memory has it. I must have been tired or something the last time I did it. That often happens and I will leave the workout alone afterward.

Valerie, that is great that you won with the HOA and those people will have to change what they are doing. That is great that the dump property is cleaned up.

Deb, hope that your day is a good one.

Hi to Lori

Good evening ladies!

I have had some good workout days...mixture of SB,LEK,KCM raw, Cathe and of course bouncing with Chelsie. Yesterday did Cathe’s recent Live Stacked Upper body. Liked it a lot. She compares it to her most recent Lite DVD. Not sure who still subscribes to Live here but the second half of Lower Body Barre and Weights is a great little weight workout when you are short on time. I like that a lot of her live workouts you can split. Just thought I’d mention this.

Satuday we had the kids over for Corned Beef and Cabbage. My husbands makes it every year for us and as always - it is amazing. I tried out an instant pot Triple Chocolate Cheesecake, It was delicious. My family thought it was the best cheesecake they ever had! I whipped some organic heavy cream to top it off. I only have a smidgen of cheesecake when I make it. I wish I could just chow down but it would send my sugar to the roof. I enjoy my family eating it though. :) I am told I need to make another one this weekend.

Judy...WOW!! that is a lot of steps!! Congrats!!!! I can see why you are not liking the job. I hate when you are promised one thing then get something completely different. Not what you signed up for.

Valerie...sounds like a compromise at the HOA. As long as this is something you all can live with then, it is a good decision. We still have snow...it is melting just not fast enough. The warmer weather can’t come quick enough. The older I get the warmer I want it.

Carolyn....funny the workouts we bought years ago. I had a few and gave them away knowing I would never do them. Never thought to donate to our library.

Diane Sue...the Raw Pyramid looks great. I am going to try and fit it in before Cheslie comes over in the morning. Thank you on the infomation on oxalates. I am going to look into this too. What did the articles say about celery? I am still juicing celery so curious. Hope your allergies calm down a bit to give you some relief. My husband had a cold this weekend and was sneezing terribly. Fingers crossed it passes me.

Have a great night all!

Lori, I hope you don't get the cold.

This is just one of the articles I have read. I read the first one by Dave Aspry on Bullet Proof and he mentions it in his book. Some articles list celery along with a lot of other foods. One said celery was moderately high. Some say unless there is a problem eating those items with moderation should not be a problem and the nutrients out weigh the bad. I came across this when reading on probiotic and allergies.

We did a hike this morning with cousin and his wife. it is a hike we have done with them several times before. Dh and I did it a week ago in about 90 min with time to sit and look at the water. Cousin has not been doing any exercise lately and wow, it showed. I thought we would be carrying him! must have taken us 3 1/2 hours & we didn't go fast. he was sweating like crazy and unsteady. I would never have suggested this one except we did it not THAT long ago with them. he has not done much over winter and is totally deconditioned. he is never in "good" shape but this was a real step backwards. He of course didn't ay anything to clue us in until he was sweating like a 30 yr old mule. we had a nice lunch after and I pitched WW to him. he needs some kind of program to follow, can't stick to anything on his own. he has T2 along with other issues and belongs to a gym right across the street but of course doesn't use it.

I only like celery as an ingredient in soup and things like that. no idea how you can drink celery juice. I think its incredibly salty, plus I don't like the flavor much regardless of salt.

we didn't have to compromise much, and won about 98% of the issues. with the internet, a lot of things that were "illegal" such as running a business from your home, are not considered real rule breaking offenses anymore. you can run a business from a home office and it doesn't interfere with anything, its not l;ike you are bring hundreds of vehicles in to your door. this is what the offender was doing and that is why he got so much attention. we will have to see if the owner complies. we could end up back in court if he breaks the rules.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday.

Valerie, I hope you had a nice lunch with cousin. Too bad about the hike and him being out of shape to that point. I think you and others made a good decision on accepting what the court has decided.

Carolyn, good job on those workouts!

Diane Sue, I hope your symptoms are not gout related. Have you been diagnosed with gout? High oxalates are what they say caused Keegan's bladder stones. That is why the food I make has all low oxalate veggies. I just started using broccoli once in a while, even though it is not really in the high category of oxalates. I find that I am stiff all over when I get up in the morning, then again if I sit for any length of time, even a few minutes. My legs from the knees down are stiff.

Lori, I did look at the Live version of Stacked Sets Upper Body....it make me really miss the Live workouts. No sense in me signing up right now. That cheesecake sounds amazing. :)

Judy, I can see why you would be disappointed in the job and what they are expecting. They must have "in-store" managers you can speak with? at least about the shifts that you were told you would have?

2 classes today, so lots of driving back and forth...but it is still a lot of fun.

Take care,

My workout today was Power Hour which was 1 hour 11 minutes and 324 calories burned. Average heart rate was 115 and maximum heart rate was 160. I did 10 minutes of a JS cardio workout first as a warm up. Power Hour doesn’t have a cardio based warm up instead going straight into light weights. I prefer doing some cardio for warming up.

Diane Sue, I have also read about high oxalates in certain foods, especially spinach. I had a green smoothie every morning for several years until I burned myself out on them. I tried to use a variety of greens. I still eat a lot of spinach, kale, and other greens, just not as many smoothies. If your greens aren’t causing problems maybe you have a good dietary balance. Of course, being aware of possible issues is important.

Lori, great job with your workouts this past week. The chocolate cheesecake sounds delicious. I would have a hard time resisting that!

Hello to Valerie, Deb, and Judy.

Deb lunch was good. it was to celebrate my upcoming birthday ( the 30th) when we hope to be in MT. the hike was concerning though because he was so clearly out of shape. not that he is ever in "good shape" but he was noticeably less fit that when we last did this same hike. I was leading. this is NOT a technical hike but more than a leisurely walk. DH and I could have done the hike in 1/4 of the time without working hard. he was sweating, out of breath. he is overweight, annually goes thru weight loss attempts but doesn't stick to anything. he could easily fit in a little exercise. fully realize he is not ever going to be actually "fit". we purposely pick things short and not too hard since neither he or his wife exercise much. they have a gym membership, gym is across the street. if he even walked to the gym using the stairs and didn't go in, he would benefit! I started feeling concerned he might have a heart attack or stroke so stopped after each uphill segment to let him catch his breath. DH and I barely breathed hard and certainly didn't sweat. I am not trying to "glory" in us being fit, but believe me this was concerning. we care about both of them and he is digging his grave with too much food and inactivity. and his blood sugar has been too high. all things he could fix with a little attention.

Coffey Fit Raw Step 2, used 2 risers and 1# dbs for the boxing drills and waistline, 40 minutes, heart rate average 149, max 184, 3,705 steps, 9.3 met.
The ladies, brunch and games was fun. Then the woman hosting and I got to talking about workouts and her and her husband showed me their equipment in his office/gym. Their Total Gym looks so much nicer than what the ones I remember. So, we had some nice discussions there ;) I went to the grocery store before I came home.

Valerie, I hope that you do not have to go to court anymore with those people. It is inconsiderate to start something like that that inconveniences others in the area. There seem to be a lot of people out there that are just plain inconsiderate.
I like celery. Not so much just plain though, but with some dip for veggies or almond butter. I like it in soups and meals and it was always one of the things I liked about v8 juice and the flavor. I used to buy the low sodium all of the time. It sounds like your cousin got a workout with you and your husband. Too, be he doesn't use his membership at the gym.

Deb, my diagnosis has gout on it in my medical record at the Arthritis doctor's clinic, along with osteo arthritis, negative rheumatoid arthritis and several other things. Still, all in all, I am not real trusting of ad diagnosis based on a couple of x rays and looking at me. I ate my kale salad last night anyway, along with my salmon and blueberries that I put on it. I use mct oil (Brain Octane oil from Bulletproof) in my salad dressings. I did read that eating fat helps added to the food, so that should help. I decided that I will switch up with romaine lettuce which is better and take the calcium magnesium with my salad meal. I will watch for any other symptoms. I am not throwing out my kale and walnuts and things with oxalates. I am going to eat them, then cut back. I often wake up stiff and sore. Yesterday I woke up and my hip, waist area, and low back all hurt a lot and I tried to warm up a bit once up and did some stretching. By the time I was upstairs working out I was fine. I was a bit worried about doing the lower body workout, but I was just normally a little muscle soreness. The pain did not come back or worsen.

Carolyn, I like to do a little cardio work before a weight workout. I am liking those short blizzard blasts and calorie crush workouts for that. Quick and I feel ready for the weights afterward. I always found the biceps on that one a real burner. I should check it out sometime. Probably not much different than Les Mills Pump though, which is something like 5 minute per body part work. I did green smoothies for quite awhile. Then I just went back to having some greens powders or once in awhile now I pick up uber greens from Suja or something like that that is not full of sugar. I decided I would rather eat my greens as a salad or in stir fries than drink them. Although I am sure juicing ans smoothies probably get a lot more veggies down. I was thinking that maybe the greens powders being processed, might lessen osalates? I need to see if I can find something about that.

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday I did Rev'd Up Rumble, Scrambled Premix 3 (no combos + calorie crush), and 4 DS Back & Biceps. Today I did a Peloton ride and a short Yin Yoga session.

Deb-I like the 4DS weight work too, but I haven't done many of the cardio workouts. The step is too complicated for me. I think the kick-box workout is ok though. I haven't met many of the managers at the store. The manager who I spoke to in the beginning and who led the orientation class I was in has been busy doing orientations for the new temps that are being hired. I think that's all she does, work with new employees. I don't think she would be able to help with my schedule. I have to change my availability online and see what happens.

Valerie-I thought that 90 days in advance for scheduling days off was pretty rigid too. They have a lot of rules, another one is that employees can only enter and leave from one entrance, the one by the service desk. If you use another one you can get written up. I'm assuming this must have something to do with deterring employee theft. You can't leave the building during breaks or lunch either. There have been several people that have quit or been let go just in the month that I have been there.
That's too bad about your cousin. It sounds like WW would be a good thing for him to consider.

Carolyn-Great workouts this week! I was disappointed when I saw that my work schedule wasn't going to be the nice, short 4 hour shifts I had anticipated. I'm still going to try to make this a positive experience and enjoy it as much as I can.

Diane Sue-I'm sorry about the pollen. Ours is going up too and I've been sneezing more lately.
I've been taking Ashwagandha in the evening and it seems to be helping me sleep. I feel drowsy after taking it
and my Fitbit is showing more deep sleep. It's possible that I'm sleeping better/longer due to working but it does feel like the Ashwagandha is doing something. I've also been using Glutamine in my protein drinks, for my immune system. There have been a lot of sick people at work and so far I've managed not to get anything.
Home Depot does seem to be a good place for employees who have been there longer and are working full time. Those positions are harder to come by and most of the non managerial staff is part time and/or temporary. It's not a bad environment to work in though and most of the people there are friendly and nice to work with.

Lori-Nice workouts this week! Your dinner sounds great! I haven't had Corned Beef and Cabbage in ages.
I didn't renew my Live subscription this year but I'm thinking about signing up again. I do miss the Live workouts and having On Demand is nice too.
It's still so cold here, especially in the mornings. I can't wait for warm weather to get here.

Have a great night!

Judy
