Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 9/3

Good evening ladies!

Yesterday I did a couple of barre and bounce workouts then took GiGi for a run. Was fun. Today was a BBS dance workout and a BBS upper body. I am stopping with the P90X. A few weeks back my son decided he prefers to workout in the evening and I tried to keep with it but I just do not like heavy weights in the evening for 45 or so minutes and I was not enjoying it. So I am back to my own thing. That is ok...we still enjoy our fitness talks. He is into protien shakes and has lost 12 lbs and looks great. He is really enjoying working out which thrills me!

Someone at work asked why I decided to take up running and I told them well it was unexpected...I decided better to run than be dragged! So far my knee has been fine and I am happy about this.

Valerie...I am hoping Puss continues to improve. I am so sorry about this. Most of my weights are the metal ones. They do not bother me. Perhaps because this is all I have had.

Deb...I do keep her on a leash. It is about 30 feet so she has a lot of freedom. She is pretty good about staying straight and not running into the woods. She just likes to move quickly! Great workouts! You are doing great getting back into it. Picked Bob up at the airport yesterday amd I am glad he is home.

Diane Sue...awesome you now can go to your Vet you like. Great news. I can't wait for the conference to be over. This week is the most stressful. Nice workouts! As fit as us ladies are it always amazes me when we are sore from a workout! Some days I can really feel a workout 2 or 3 days later!

Judy...yes sub in another workout. Do not want your back to flare up. Years ago when I was in my mid 20's I developed tendonitis in both knees and was told I needed to rest up a bit for a while. I was so upset I could not workout and my mon said to me "there are worse things in life then not being able to work out" I looked at her and said "like what?" She just shook her head. Makes me laugh when I think of this. :)

Carolyn...I was doing some JS a few times a week a while ago and enjoyed her workouts. Need to fit her in more often.

Have a great night all!

I guess I think dogs are like people. some need cleaning and are prone to dental issues and others aren't. I used to brush our dogs teeth and he didn't mind it. I think I might have gotten his teeth cleaned professionally but don't remember for sure. better to clean them than deal with extractions. I am getting him in to the vet tomorrow at 10. wanted today but I understand after a 3 day weekend they were probably slammed and I would like to see the same vet who has seen him before.

I have a mish mosh of different styles of weights, but the 12's are the only totally metal ones. they are fine for most things. I have a few sore spots from Ramped up. I think it was the one arm rows with 25 lbs. I never get severe upper body soreness. my legs are the thing that get unpleasantly sore.

Lori, I know you usually seem to really love working out. I don't blame you if you weren't feeling a fairly long weight workout in the evenings. It is good that your son still is keeping up with working out. I used to use a really long leash for training. It was good for teaching to come and stop on command. Also good because if Gertie chose to take off I could catch it or step on it and stop her. I don't use it any more though. I just use a regular length if we run. She is pretty good about staying to the side instead of running across in front of me. I think she is getting a bit too heavy. I told my husband we need to get her out more. My vet posted a chart on how your dog looks from above and the side when they are too thin, ideal, and too heavy , and obese. I cannot feel any ribs and and she doesn't have a bit of waistline looking at her from above. I had sort of thought it recently and it seems she lies around more lately.

Valerie, I have known people who have had to spend quite a bit on their dogs teeth problems. I am not sure what makes it happen for some dogs. I have read that soft dog foods tend to have sugars in them and are not the best choice for dogs. I have always tried to use things that helped clean my dogs teeth and have considered brushing. I do check Gertie's to see if they look like they have tartar on them. I have the old hex iron dumbbells, a pair of chrome painted, and chrome 8's. My Bowflex handles are plastic and textured so good to hold but the plates on them are bulky and for some exercises I find them uncomfortable, The coated dumbbells cost quite a bit more than the iron and chrome ones.

Good morning,

Yesterday I did the ICE Blizzard Blast and MM Shoulders. 46 Minutes, 286 calories.

Judy, are you doing an STS rotation? Too bad about the ride...and the weather...I am embarrassed to admit that I have not had my bike out once this season. :(.

Valerie, isn't that a new dishwasher? Cathe has some DB's on her site for sale that have neoprene heads...I didn't see the prices though. I am sure that they are not cheap. Good luck at the vet today. I have all iron or chrome DB's and don't mind them.

Carolyn, good job on the step workout.

Diane Sue, wow, 400 complaints must have overwhelmed them. I hope they figure out what it is.. I am hesitant to purchase anything more electronic, just because of what you mentioned. I also don't do overhead tricep extensions or pullovers using 2 DB's....I would rather go heavier and use one. I am not sure why all of a sudden she started using 2...but I think you are right...it's so you can go heavier. It never feels right for me. Kylee's issue was that I would find tiny drops on the floor that she would do without even knowing it. Once I started that med, it stopped. My vet said to keep reducing it, so the next bottle, was half the dose. It still worked, so now I break these in half and give her 1 a day. I tried stopping from there, and it started again, so this is the dose I keep her on.

Lori, that is so great that your son has stuck with working out. Will he continue to do P90X? Maybe he would like STS? Good that your knee has not bothered you and you can run with Gigi. She must love it.

A workout, and errands today...

Take care,

Hi Everyone,

Deb-Yes, I started an STS rotation this week. I started with Meso 2. I am also embarrassed by how little time I've spent outside this summer :(
In that past, when I was running with groups and training for races I was always outside in the summer. The weather will still be good enough to get out for the next couple of months, so I should focus on that.

Valerie-I hope all goes well at the vet today and that your kitty will be ok.

Lori-Thanks, I agree. I definitely don't want my back to flare up again. I'll have to sub another leg workout for STS. That's great that your son is doing so well with working out. I'm sure you are a great influence on him! Great job with the running!

Diane Sue-Great job with RWH Legs. That is such a challenging workout! I think it's Cathe's hardest leg workout. I prefer using 1 dumbbell for the overhead tricep extensions and pullovers too. You're probably right about why Cathe made that change, so that people without the heavier dumbbells could use 2 lighter ones.

Carolyn-Step Blast sounds like a good one! I need to be very careful with deadlifts. I watch my form in the mirror and I don't go down as far as Cathe does. I've also been wearing a weight lifting belt for back support during leg workouts and that does help.

I guess I'm alone on this one. I think using two smaller dumbbells activates triceps way more than using one heavy one. using one heavy one seems to tax the outside parts of my shoulders and down the upper sides of my back, whereas using two dumbbells separately seems to focus directly on triceps. I get a big difference in what it feels like gets worked. I have always considered them two completely different exercises since it feels like a totally different move. I have neoprene 8's, 10's, the metal 12's. the heavier ones ( 15 and up) are the metal handles with the hard rubber ends like cathe uses. the neoprene ones don't have big ends like the metal 12's.. that is part of the clanking contact and slipping problem. I think my triceps are fairly strong as I usually use cathes weight ( or more) on triceps moves but for shoulders or biceps I am usually less that she and the crew.
this might vary individually with how we are all "put together". I have broad shoulders and seem to have an angled grip on bicep moves. I can't keep dumbbells level , they are always crooked. I use 'easy curl" bars because the angled grip makes it much more comfortable for me than a straight bar.

we are in another weather slump with smoke and haze. supposed to clear somewhat today, but very poor air quality. possibly some rain this week. it is incredibly dry out there and all the fires are just awful.

Today I started with X 10 Step, 30 minutes (I had to run down stairs with an envelope for dh) 178 calories, heart rate average 118, max 160. Then I did the rotation workout which was Ripped with Hiit Back, Biceps, and shoulders, 59 minutes, heart rate 103 average, 132 max, 229 calories.
I don't know how I got such a low average heart rate on X10. Total time was 89 minutes and calories 407.

barbell crazy 8's 25# 24 reps

Deb, you are getting some nice calorie burns with those MM and BB 's . At least the medicine takes care of the problem.. Most of the things on Cathe's weights and gloves seem high. I have been able to purchase things like the weight gloves at Academy Sports and Outdoors. They were in Cathe Boxes with Cathe on them. I don't remember dumbbells though.

Judy, I have spent much less time outdoors this summer mainly because of allergies. I had a couple of bouts with them, but much less than usual. I really think the bee pollen has helped for certain allergies. Not mold though. Right now it is rag weed and I have had some eye irritation. My daughter says her husband wears goggles when outside with the mask. They are the ones with all that acreage. I generally like working outside in the yard , but would like to find a way not to be bothered when I go outside. Gertie would like to have walks. I think RWH legs is so intense because of the power jumps after the weights.

Valerie, do lifting gloves help you at all. I am the opposite with the easy curl bar. It feels a bit uncomfortable on the angle. Body Beast uses an ez curl bar and dumbbells. I do it that way , but just find it uncomfortable. I am sure it is individual mechanics.

I didn't get my workout in today. I had planned to do yoga, but I didn't get up in time. I had an appointment and some errands and of course I had no interest in working out afterwards.

Valerie it's too bad that the weather patterns are so uneven. We have rain and hurricanes on the east coast while the west suffers.

Hello to everyone.

Yep, always use gloves. I get callouses at the base of my fingers if I don't, so I use gloves for lifting, riding, gardening, everything.
when I lift any weight, the outside end of the dumbbell is always higher than the inside. I can't get in a position where the weight is straight. one arm more than the other. must have something to do with how forearms are attached to upper arm, or maybe wrists to forearm. I noticed right away that I can't ever get things level. guess it would be too easy if we were all hooked together identically. my hips don't rotate outward either, more a factor in yoga.

yes Carolyn, seems everything seems more extreme than it was not many years ago. we are so very very dry. this is the driest summer I can remember and I've lived here almost 50 years. it did not used to be this way in the summer. DH and I did a lot of hiking and backpacking in summer and it always rained some, often messing up our plans. the last few years it seems so dry and fires generate terrible smoke so that is the factor to be worked around now, not rain. we always had some fires but they are bigger, more intense, and the fire season is longer.
Hurricanes seem more often or stronger... I understand it varies on where they hit that is a factor. I've never live where hurricanes happen.

Good morning,

Yesterday I did ICE MM Biceps, 4 round premix. I started out with 10's, and by round 4 I was using 5's...:).

Judy, I am with you....I will try to be outdoors more while the weather is still nice. That usually means September and October. We have no excuses right?

Valerie, Did you get to the vet yesterday? I think you may be correct in that using 2 DB's activates the muscles better. However, I have a tough time keeping them together, maybe because mine are all metal..they slip around and make it even harder to do.

Diane Sue, "I had to run down stairs with an envelope for dh) 178 calories, heart rate average 118"... Good calorie burn for running an envelope down stairs...:)...LOL...just kidding. I usually get my lifting gloves at Dick's Sporting Goods. They last for years. Maybe using one of those masks that they use in dental offices would help you when outdoors? They are light and easy to take off and on. I guess goggles would be better than regular sun glasses...

Carolyn, I am the same....like you had yesterday, I have to take Kylee to the groomer very early, so no workout planned for me today. I am not one to come back after doing errands, and start a workout in the afternoon. I don't know why that is?

Taking Kylee, and then going to my friends to watch Suits...:)

Take care,

Deb, lol, I wish I could burn 178 calories taking an envelope downstairs. I was in a hurry typing so I could get in the shower before my husband came back from an errand. Usually I try to proof read. A workout does not usually happen for me if I don't do it in the morning before I am showered. I was rather pleased with myself Monday when my company left and I managed to get in the Total Body Giant sets. I don't get very sweaty at all when doing weight work. I always sort of laugh when instructors say something about getting sweaty during a warm up , weights, or yoga. It just doesn't happen.

Today I did Yoga Max for 48 minutes. I also did a JS 1 mile walk that is on SparkPeople as a part of a walk and talk series. It was an easy way to get more steps while she discussed "progress not perfection". Spark People is one of the original health, fitness, and weight loss websites that has tons of articles on so many topics, workout videos, and so much more and it is free. I joined the site in 2009 and continue to log in for the information. I went for a massage after my workout and it was wonderful.

Greetings to everyone and have a great day.

Today's workout was Strong and Sweaty Cardio Slam, 50 minutes, heart rate 135 average, max 161, 358 calories, 4,006 steps. Then I did Strong and Sweaty Bonus Abs, 13 minutes, 103 average heart rate, max 126, 49 calories, 259 steps. I finished off with Kelly Coffey Body Design Yoga Flow segment, 13 minutes, 30 calories,36 steps. Total time was, 76 minutes, calories 437. Tomorrow is Ripped with Hiit Upper chest, shoulders, and triceps. I may add the Ripped with Hiit abs scheduled for Saturday if I have time. I am not sure if I will get in Saturday's RWH Plyo #2 on Saturday since I have to be out the door early or hold it till Sunday before church. I would have more time then.

Carolyn, as sore as I have been from this rotation , I could use a massage :) I bet the yoga felt nice.

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday I did Jessica Smith Yoga Stretch For Beginners & Beyond. There were 2 sections, 30 minutes each. I did both. One was more active and had some core work, the other was more relaxing. Today I did Core Max and STS Meso 2 Back & Biceps.

Deb-that's right, we need to take advantage of the nice weather September and October.

Valerie-I hope your kitty is doing ok

Diane Sue-Great job with your rotation! Awesome workouts!

Carolyn-a massage sounds so nice! I need to schedule one again soon. Yoga Max is becoming a favorite of mine. I really like Cathe's approach to yoga.

Hi to Lori & Caitlin!

went to the vet yesterday and had labs done but no results yet. he seems to have a urinary incontinence problem too. I am so hoping this is a UTI . only thing she mentioned was hyperthyroidism for the weight loss but need lab results for that. should hear something today. I am not feeling very good about this. just because you find out what's wrong does not mean it can be treated reasonably.

A weight workout late in the afternoon works well for me. cardio not so much. between 3 and 5 usually in process of making dinner and lots of times there is enough time to fit in 40 minutes while something is cooking, defrosting etc. I don't sweat much with weights either unless I go fast and it's warm out. our basement is usually cool enough to keep sweat minimum.

we still have horrible air quality. sun looks like a red beachball. at least it doesn't smell smoky. we are not in a hurricane zone so I don't want to sound like a whiner. weather forecasters can't seem to get it right about when this wiil clear. might get some showers tomorrow and Saturday but they have been wrong about that time and again lately.

oh too funny 178 cal for running down stairs? sometimes fitness trackers are a joke. we rode 26 miles this morning just for exercise. not good air quality, and incredibly hazy. trail was not too busy though. I always wear wrap around sunglasses I don't think would help much with airborne allergens, but would not hurt to try. I think goggles would fog up. even my sunglasses fog up easily. .

Good evening ladies!

Pretty much been doing either a BBS Tramp workout or a Dance workout plus weights. Yesterday was lower and today was upper. Did not run yesterday evening. I had my mamogram after work. I did run this evening but it was a quick one. 1/2 mile into ithe run it started to rain. Got home just before it really came down. GiGi of course did not mind at all. :)

Diane Sue...I really was enjoying P90X in the morning but in the evening not so much. I do enjoying running, bouncing or a quick upper target in the evening. I am funny with my workouts. I agree you would think your HR would be higher with the X workouts. Reading your workouts I can see why you may be sore. I bet you look amazing! My legs have never looked better. I joke with my husband it is funny I finally get the legs I like at age 55! Lol!

Carolyn...thanks for mentioning Spark People. I have heard of it but never joined. Will do so after I post here.

Judy..good workouts. How is your back? Better? It is really rainy here at the moment. So sad summer is over already. Today while running it was already getting dark so early. I bought a head lamp that I am going to try and use. Not sure if it will work. It is very wooded and isolated where I go and I get spooked really easy. Need to figure something out for her to be able to get her exercise in the winter.

Valerie...I am so sorry about your kitty. Hoping the problem can be treated and at a reasonable cost.

Deb...you are doing really great with workouts and seemed to have been able to jump back into it. How have you been feeling? Are you done with the meds?

Well if I wasn't stressed enough with the conference - Irma is not helping at all. Thank goodness my conference is not this weekend but the next. I made the decision to ship out what we can today instead of Monday. So this was a huge task trying to scramble to get out what we can. It will be amazing if this all goes smoothly. Most important though are the people in Florida. I know so many from all my conferences and Bob's parents. Hoping all are safe.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday...I spent a good portion of the day driving.

Diane Sue, I don't get very sweaty doing weight work at all either. I am amazed at how you string so many workouts together. Any one of those would be plenty for me. :)

Carolyn, I used to go over to Spark People a long time ago...forgot all about it. Thanks for bringing it up. I will have to go over and see it again.

Judy, is the yoga helping your back? I don't think I have ever done either of Cathe's yoga workouts. I should persevere and make myself do them until I like them.

Valerie, keeping my fingers crossed that the lab work for your kitty comes back with results that can be treated. Diane Sue's calorie burn was a typo, not to do with her fitness tracker...LOL..:).

Lori, I hope all goes well with the conference...do you think it could be cancelled due to the storm? Where exactly in Florida is it being held? I have been much better, thanks. Almost done with the meds...2 more days.

A workout, then going to the hall to load the truck, then unload and set up at the arena.....

Take care,

This morning I did Rock'm Sock'm Kickboxing. Workout time was 49 minutes with 402 calories burned. Average heart rate was 137 and maximum heart rate was 164. I have an appointment for my physical this morning. It seems that the projected path for hurricane Irma will bring it right through this area early next week.

Deb, I log into Spark People every day to get the log-in points. I look to see if there are any articles that I want to read and occasionally I log my food. WW is not a program where you count calories so I like to check to see how many calories I am eating and nutritional breakdown. If you decide to try a Cathe yoga you can always do a timesaver premix. I use Yoga Relax when I want a relaxing stretch and Yoga Max when I want a more active practice.

Lori, there are numerous short workouts on Spark People that could be an add-on. They have workouts from a variety of trainers.

Hello to Diane Sue, Valerie, Judy, and Caitlin.

Valerie-I hope you get good news from the vet and I hope your kitty is feeling better.

Lori-My back is better, but not quite 100%. I'm not in pain right now, but when I do heavier or more challenging lower body workouts I can tell that my low back is not liking it. We have headlamps for running at night and they work pretty well. I haven't used them in a wooded area though. That might be a little scary after dark. I hope all of your friends, and Bob's parents will get through Irma ok.

Deb-I think the yoga is helping my back. I was never patient enough to do yoga before but I've been forcing myself to do it. I am starting to see some benefits from it. I started out with the timesaver premixes, like Carolyn mentioned. That was a good introduction into Cathe's yoga.

Carolyn-I'm sorry that you will have to deal with Irma :( Do you think you will need to evacuate?

Hi to Diane Sue & Caitlin,

Judy

Lori, where is the conference? I keep thinking you usually went to florida. sounds like you might need plan B! no telling with hurricanes. they can lose steam quickly, change course, but even a tropical storm of much less intensity could make it difficult.

it is actually cloudy and a few drops of rain so far. everyone around here is hoping for some significant rainfall, but anything will be good.

I remember coming across Spark people before. I will also check it out. I appreciate thoughts on diet and exercise. Logging food was hard for me. if you cook your own food from scratch, it got complicated with WW. already prepared foods, restaurant food, or WW recipes, were easier. it seemed like everything we eat needed lengthy ingredient lists and calculations. punishment for doing a lot of cooking. I do weigh and measure things most of the time, and my weight is stable, just a little more than I would like it to be. never could get entries on my phone to work. when we traveled I could not track. I stick pretty closely to a "semi WW" program though I am not paying for it right now.

Puss is not going to make it. he is in kidney failure. we will end things this afternoon. there is no point in trying to buy a little more time. I don't think he is in pain. still responding to us, purring, eating and drinking but his labs indicate he will not last long. I am not dragging this out for a few more possibly painful days. I love my pets. this is so hard.
