Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 9/23

Hi Deb and any later posters--

This morning I did the 45 min. premix on Plateau Busters.

We went to the Rattlesnake Cafe again last night and I had a really delicious shrimp quesadilla.

Watched the second three episodes of Homeland. Really good. now I have to get three more in my queue.

Hope everyone is enjoying their weekend!

Good morning,

No workout today. I need to talk myself back into it. I did a lot of house chores yesterday, and made jerky treats for Keegan.

Garance, that series is on Ebay for around $21. I am debating. Tonight DWTS starts and I have it set up to tape. It's the "all star" season. Some of them were not "stars" as far as I remember, but after all these seasons, I guess they need to come up with something to keep the viewers coming back. Will you be watching? My good VCR's remote died, and I thought I was able to use one that I had that was a combo DVD player and VHS. it would not tape, or at least I could not figure it out, so I was actually going to try to buy a new VCR. NOT. DH had a great idea...find a new remote for the old vcr on Ebay. I did! it was only $16 including shipping and it works great. I love Ebay.

Well. off to get more coffee and wake up.

I'm not officially "back" from vacation but we ended the first week yesterday. went to yellowstone NP and wilderness areas to the east. it was fun but smoky. a lot of fires still burning and no rain or wind in sight. some places were pretty decent but others were very unpleasant. headache, sore throat and nose from extensive smoke. not good for pictures. saw loads of animals in Yellowstone but not much in the wilderness areas outside the park. not hard to tell where hunting starts! we got in a little biking and a fair amount of hiking.
8-10,000 feet elevation needs a "little adjustment". puff pant!! from eastern WA thru ID, WY, MT it was all smoky/hazy to varying degrees with no break in sight. so we drove home yesterday. will take a day to regroup and reload and then head to some other spots staying on the west side of the mountains. saw great critters in YNP.. my favorite place except for the crowds.

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, and Valerie--

This morning I did KCM's Cardio Quick Fix--both routines (45 min.).

Deb, I think I am somewhat burned out on DWTS, and when I saw Kirstie Alley and Bristol Palin were back in the all-stars, I decided it was not for me this time. Homeland is really, really good, and I saw last night that the two leads both won Emmys. We had our first frost last night. DH says if you get your first frost before the end of September you get a warm October--Indian Summer. Hope he's right.

Welcome back Valerie! Too bad about all those fires. I loved Yellowstone when we did a family trip there--seems ages ago now.

DH is having a difficult time watching football--apparently the replacement refs are totally incompetent and recruited from Div 2 and 3 college football and have nothing more than their egos going for them. I asked him if it wasn't embarrassing for them, and he said that bad refs are never embarrassed because they always think they are right. His experience as a soccer ref with his colleagues!

Hi to Josie and Joan!

Good morning,

Very late last night. It was the last class of the session so we had what the trainer calls a "progress match", where you go into the ring just as if you were in a trial. Kylee did not qualify because she did not sit and stay while I walked around the room. She got up when she couldn;'t turn her head around and see me when I was behind her. Otherwise she did really well.

I'm thinking of getting DH an iPad for his birthday which is coming up soon. I know if he had it he would use it. He hems and haws about things he wants, tries to talk himself out of getting it, when I know all along he will end up getting it. Just like the GPS he just got. He talked about them, researched them, until he finally bought it.

Still trying to fight whatever Kylee has that makes her vomit when she has an empty stomach. It's almost like we have to feed her every 4 hours, which is not easy, especially over night. Not sure if I should call the vet, or wait. She did go almost a week without vomiting.

Garance, I know what you mean about some of the so called "stars". I just hope that the ones like Drew, Opollo, etc will beat them out early, and we will get to see some really good dances. I have been hearing a lot about those substitue reps on talk radio. One topic was about how easy it would be to get one to throw a game. Most would just blame a bad call on their ineptitude.

Valerie, welcome back and have a nice trip!

Hi to Josie, & Joan,

Take care,

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, and Valerie--

This morning I did the upper body premix on High Reps (39 min.).

Deb, maybe I will check in later on DWTS and hope that the "stars" I don't like will be gone. Maybe you should ask the breeder for Kylee if she has any ideas about her problem. I say go ahead and buy the ipad for John. Men are sometimes so weird about buying things for themselves.

Apparently the refs really made a mess of a game last night. DH said they disagreed with the call at the end--one saying it was interception, the other a TD. DH says the reason the NFL won't negotiate is that they don't want to treat their refs as full time employees and end up providing pensions. After listening to DH complain about this, I'm glad I don't like football. I have an idea--why not let the DWTS judges take over? At least they would be more fun.

Good morning,

Slept in a bit today so I got a later start than normal.

Garance, I didn't watch the shows yet, but went on to ABC's site and saw the scores etc. Apparently the highest score was given to Emmit and Cheryl. The first to go has to be Bristo, Pamela Anderson, and probably Kirstie Alley. They were not good the first go around. Poor Max and Tony. Otherwise, I think the cast should be good. see link: Dancing With The Stars - ABC.com

LOL about DWTS judges taking over the football games. It would probably make more sense and would be more entertaining!

Rainy here today, I think this autumn will be making up for the dry summer.

Hi to Josie, Joan & Valerie,

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, and Valerie--

This morning I did the lesser impact premix on Crossfire (56 min.).

Well, Deb, if those three get eliminated quickly, I may take a look. I watched Go On last night. Matthew Perry is hilarious in this. I might get hooked on this sit com. I usually prefer hour-long dramas, but I am sampling some of the new shows. I strongly recommend Once Upon a Time and Revenge. I loved both of them last year.

We're getting a little bit of rain. Nothing too soaking, and I guess we need to catch up given how dry our summer was.

DH is off buying calves today. Max will have a great, long ride in his favorite truck.

Not sure what I am up to this afternoon. I might actually do some research and see if anything sparks my writing interests.

Good morning,

In late again, didn't get home until around 10:00. Then I am too wound up to sleep.

Garance, I didn't watch DWTS yet, but saw that Pamela Anderson was voted off. One down,, 2 to go. Then all that are left are the ones that were either past winners, or ones that came in second, or at least third. The exception is Sabrina that was voted off very early. What are you researching to write about?

I need a long nap.....

Hi to Josie, Joan and the vacationing Valerie!

Take care,

Hi Deb--

This morning I did Gym Style back, sh, bis (50 min.).

Glad to hear Pamela Anderson is gone. Let me know when Bristol and Kirstie get their marching orders. I have, as usual, been enjoying Project Runway. Last week they had to come up with a new outfit for the NYC Rockettes, and this week it's babies clothing. I always get a kick out of the prima donnas on this show. I am going to record Elementary, which is supposed to be an updated version of Sherlock Holmes with Lucy Liu as Dr. Watson. I'm trying to take a look at the 5 recommended new shows by EW.

Deb, I have some ideas for a couple essays on Shakespeare, but I need to catch up on the criticism to make sure I'm not repeating what has already been said.

Off to the library!

Good morning and Happy Friday,

So glad it's Friday. No real plans for the weekend, just house stuff and maybe start to clean up the garden and yard getting ready for winter.

Garance, I watched about 30 minutes of my tape of DWTS and it is going to be a lot of good dancing (except for the 2 left that will probably be the ones to go). I saw Drew, Joey and Sabrina and they were all very good. The judges mentioned how they will need to really step it up since they are all "stars" from the past. Also, they will now be able to score with half scores, eg. 7.5, 8.5, etc. probably because of how close they will all be in ability. It should be good once the other 2 are gone.

What do you do once you write the essays? submit them somewhere?

Hi to Josie, Joan and Valerie!

Take care,

Hi Deb--

This morning I did the 47 min. premix on Cardio Supersets. It was soo hard getting up this morning because of the gloomy rain pouring down. Bed felt very, very good.

Yes, there are a lot of academic journals where you can submit an article. It is usually sent out to a couple readers for a verdict, and either outright acceptance or rejection, and occasionally the readers' reports will recommend some changes before publication. Occasionally someone putting together a collection will want the essay and then, trala, I will get paid! Usually about 500 dollars for reprinting. I did just recently get paid for an original essay in a new collection on Plath.

DH is so busy filling wood orders I doubt we will be doing anything. I might try to see a film if there is anything good playing.

I just received some swatches from Mood fabrics for a Chanel style jacket I want to make. They have had a series of articles on doing a Chanel jacket in Vogue Sewing magazine, and I thought this would be a good project for me. I have always admired Chanel suits.

Hi Ladies,

Sorry for not posting sooner. It has been a stressful week at work. I did manage to go spinning on Tuesday and I went to yoga on Monday and a sculpt class on Wednesday.

Tomorrow I will be taking a yoga blend and a dance class and on Sunday I will be doing
the sculpt class. I will be going to the Hollywood Bowl tomorrow evening for an 80’s concert with one of my best friends. That should be fun!

Deb, how are you feeling after your fall?

Garance, I love Chanel suits! I wish I had a few.

Hi to Joan and Valerie!

Josie

I'm glad the regular refs are back because someone was going to get hurt. BUT the play everyone is talking about doesn't mention that all plays where someone scores are reviewed and it's not the replacement refs. When they look into those screens someone else is speaking to them.

I'm bench pressing 70lb and using 35lb dumbbells for one arm rows. And I'm sore most of the time. I am now averaging 1600 calories a day and losing .7lb a week.

Joan

Good morning and Happy Weekend!

I slept in this morning, actually slept until 6:30!! If felt so good. No agility class today, so it feels like I am gaining a lot of time for some reason, even though it is only an hour.

Garance, can you post a link to what the jacket looks like? I don't know if I have ever seen one. Saw the rest of the dances on my tape last night, this is really a good season to watch. Emmit and Cheryl were great. The judges are giving 7's and only one 8 I think. Dances like these would be getting 9's and 10's in a regular season.

Josie, I am ok, except my hand still is bruised and it hurts all over, including my wrist. I think it was a bad sprain. It will just take time to heal. That concert sounds like fun but I am not sure if I would recognize 80's music :). I was more into the70's.

Joan, great job on the weights and the weight loss! Is this with the trainer?

Cool day here today, but really nice. We have reservations for dinner tonight to a place we go to once a year for our anniversary, this will be a couple of weeks early, we can call it a combination anniversary/DH birthday dinner. Also going to the Apple store to look at iPads for DH's birthday gift.

That's if for me, hope everyone is enjoying this lovely fall weather.

Take care,

time for me to check back in. we did another hike and went mountain biking yesterday. so dry we had to walk some down hill sections because it was loose sandy gravel and very slippery.
today is garden catchup day and then we have sunday/monday to do something fun. DH keeps talking about retiring soon because it's so limiting to be stuck with vacation to go anywhere we like. this second week was limited because he's been checking in on his mother who is doing OK. don't have pathology back on her tumor but it probably won't be good news. no place we go has cell service so had to stay close to home.

so dry out. we haven't had measurable rain in 2 months now. everything is dusty. it's always dry this time of year, but not usually this dry. most years we get a couple days of rain sneaking in there. the smoke and haze is less than it was but mostly because we have a stronger onshore breeze and it's pushing the haze east. the good thing we learned about this is that the national weather site has a smoke plume map that's updated at least daily and seems to be accurate. we drove way into the mts on thursday and it was not worth hiking... smelled like smoke and very hazy, so we did a shorter hike in the woods to some lakes.
Joan, that is impressive!! glad you are finally getting settled into a program that works for you.

I don't think I'd know a Chanel jacket if it hit me in the face. I DO know I'd never sew one. I've done outdoor gear.... jackets, pants, gaiters ... but it's (now) way cheaper to buy a finished product vs sewing yourself. choices are better too. hard to even find current fabrics for the home sewer. but fit and style is not much of an issue with that outdoor stuff, not like it is with a suit jacket.

Of course...!! now I remember what chanel style was. I used to have a favorite suit in that style. finally wore it out. it was a black and white teeny houndstooth with black braid around the edges,. always looked sharp and could wear it with every color. good luck with the project!.

I'm busy picking tomatoes...finally ripe, mainly cherry ones. we run a lot later than anywhere else. corn is done and only a few zucchini left. some got oversize while we were gone or else there'd be more of them. fresh basil too. I'm used to harvesting "summer" crops at the end of sept.
