Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 9/20

Hi Ladies,

No workout this morning. I had to get my mammogram today. I might do a short workout later from darebee.com.

Lynda, I dont think that the designers of those beautiful gowns want them back :). They were a sweaty mess.
I resent the e-mail for aids lifecycle to you.

Valerie, that was a long hike. I did a race a long time ago called the Bull Dog race up in the Malibu mountains it was 18 miles and it took me 4 hours to complete. It was sort of a run/hike and it has been the hardest race I've ever done.

Deb, that is such a cute picture of Keegan.

Lori, glad that everything turned out fine. You need some rest and a couple of glasses of wine to recuperate.

Hi to Judy!

Josie

Good morning,

Nice day yesterday, weather was gorgeous, I met my friend for lunch, then shopped a bit for a stove. It's been almost 25 years since we bought our stove...I just want a basic stove that fits in the same spot...harder than you think.

Valerie, business meetings are like you described...but if you really want to get a workout in...you need to get up at around 4:30...and get to the hotel gym before the meetings start. Easier said than done, believe me. I saw the film clip of John Hamm climbing on stage....not sure what he thought this was saying...that he was so grateful that he won after 7 nominations he "crawled" to them in "gratefulness"?

Lynda, yes the soap opera actress was Susan Lucci. She won on her 19th nomination.... Happy Birthday to your DH.

Josie, hope all went well with the mamo...

Judy, lol about the pic making you want a fox terrier....They are cute, but a handful that's for sure.

Lori, are you all rested now? Those trips sure can take a lot out of you...

A workout today, and maybe some more stove/range shopping...

Take care,

Josie hope the mamm went Ok. the procedure is nothing but waiting for results is hard. 18 miles in 4 hours is hard to imagine. wow. lots of people do trail running but I knew I was not sure footed enough to even try. I'd sprain an ankle for sure.

we did a 26 mile ride yesterday although my legs were screaming. they're pretty good today so maybe that was helpful. sure didn't feel it while I was riding.

Deb so many options for cooking these days. we have a separate oven & cooktop. when the house was built, it had a combo oven/microwave. BIG mistake! the microwave died after a couple years, as expected, so the oven stopped working too. I didn't want to repeat that. we bought a "standard" wall oven and installed a shelf in the space, put a micro above on a separate circuit. I've since had to replace both the micro and wall oven, but not at the same time. the glass top cooktop keeps plugging along. we are electric here, no gas lines. it sure gets complicated when original equipment wears out if spacing isn't flexible. we keep cooktop, oven, & micro separate if that is an option for you.

Lynda are you getting disks from Netflix? If you enter a series on the queue in together in order, they won't send disks out of order. so if disk #1 of a series is on "short wait" they won't go ahead and send disk 2,3 or 4 but will skip down to whatever is in spot #5. If you have the series spaced out in the queue, it doesn't work the same way. doesn't always work but usually.

maybe I worked for a bunch of drunken party animals.... but sales meetings were packed with scheduled activities, including breakfast, and usually we had to share rooms. sharing bathroom space in the morning was challenging .... I used to go for a run if possible but usually later worked better than early.

Hi everyone--

This morning I did AB (54:00).

Got your information, Josie! Good luck on the mammogram. Mine is coming up in October. That sounds like a grueling competition. You really are an amazing athlete.

Valerie, I understand how Netflix works. I received 4 before 3 because they were nice enough to send it instead of the next film in my queue and asked a remote facility to send me 3, which I received today. So now I have the final two disks for House of Cards and I can binge watch if I want to. Why were your legs screaming? Was it from that hike?

Deb, I forgot that Lucci did finally get an emmy on her 19th try. Good luck on the stove-shopping. I have a 6 burner Thermidor on gas, so it takes up a lot of space. Tomorrow is DH's birthday, but he was happy to have a slice of cake last night. It turned out great (I had a couple bites.). It really is super-rich, but he can easily afford it with his skinniness. We will celebrate on Saturday going out to dinner.

Hi to Judy and resting Lori!

Legs were screaming from the hike. it was a steep one, lots of braking on the way down. legs are better today so I guess the ride helped although it didn't feel helpful yesterday. day off for legs today.

we have HOC on the queue after TGW. both disk 1 &2 of HOC were on short wait.
we used to "space out" the disks from series over the first 10 positions. it was easy to get a disk out of order if you didn't check the queue often.

My mamm is due in December but will put off until January. last year I ended up waiting a long time for a U/S because of holiday delays. I won't do that again. it was needlessly stressful.

We finally got DH's sister to get a colonoscopy. his family has a terrible history of colon cancer. DH has been working on her to get hers done for years! he was relentless, and she resisted. she had it Monday, and it was okay. a couple of small polyps that went to pathology. a tremendous relief. she's already had two cancers and we didn't want a third. after getting it done, she thanked him for staying on her to get it done. such a relief for everyone! DH is having scoping in December, and if it's clear he will go back to the 3 year club.

Hi Ladies,

Worked out with Karina today. It was so hot out sided at 10:30 AM, but still got a good workout. My DH is still working out with me and Karina. He likes it very much and will stick to it as long as she is training us. I consider it a good investment :)

Garance, thank you so much for your donation once again. I wish I had a Thermidor 6 burner, I love those stoves. My mammogram went well, but as usual my cholesterol is high and my blood sugar came up a little high. I have another appointment with Dr. to go over my results and figure out what is going on. Both my parent have high cholesterol and my mom is a diabetic, so it does run in the family. My HDL was very high so I'm not too worried, but my blood sugar has always been fine. We will see!

Valerie, you had a lot of lactic acid in your legs and the 26 mile ride released it. My DH has his colonoscopy scheduled for October 29th and I don't have to go for another 5 years.

Lori, I hope that you have recouped and are ready to whip the ladies back into shape.

Judy, do you sweat a lot when you spin? I always leave a puddle :)

Deb, if I ever get another dog, I would go with a boxer again. I also like the French bulldogs, my DD's roommate has one and she is adorable.

Josie

Hi Everyone,

The weather has been so nice this week, sunny and in the high 70's. I've been walking every morning this week, so far I have 20 miles in for the week. I might try to get out again tomorrow. Also, will be doing STS Back & Biceps tomorrow.

I will be getting my mammogram in October, will probably schedule it next week.

Deb-Fox Terriers have always been one of my favorite breeds. I love their cute faces! I bet they are a handful. One of my friends from the Quad Cities adopted one from the Midwest Fox Terrier Rescue and she is crazy about him!

Valerie-I think I did work for a bunch of drunken party animals. When I travelled for work they always had dinners and parties scheduled for the evenings. Sometimes I had to go, but I would usually try to get out of it and look for the nearest gym or workout at the hotel gym. I never had to share a room though, that would have been stressful.

Josie-yes I always sweat a lot while spinning. I also have higher cholesterol and will need to get a recheck sometime this fall. My DH should be due for a colonoscopy soon too. He had his first in 2011 and his doctor said he should recheck in 5 years. He didn't have any polyps but he had diverticulosis.

Hi to Lynda & Lori!

Judy

I've noticed that when ordering lab tests the last few years the docs don't seem to care much whether the samples are fasting or not. Mainly your blood glucose will be higher (and should be) if the sample isn't fasting. fasting means nothing, no food or drink in minimum 8 hours. black coffee, water are Ok. if you put cream or sugar in the coffee, or have a piece of toast, it's not a fasting sample and your values will be higher. it's hard to stay fasting for anything but a very early appointment. I am always hungry in the morning. I get the labs drawn when I'm there, and it's not fasting, but then higher numbers on some tests are OK.
I sweat more spinning than almost anything else. not much, because I don't sweat much, but more than most exercise.

We were expected to show up for all evening events. I think they thought if we weren't there, we were up to something! most evening shad an event of some kind scheduled and we were supposed to attend. Long time ago now, and probably grossly over hyped. the roommate thing was always challenging because 2 women sharing a bathroom...who usually don't know each other... it could get difficult.

I have to say, if I ever got another dog....... it would be one with a nose. I'm not fond of dogs who look like they ran into a wall at high speed. and short hair. no long hair shedding all over.

I am happy the lactic acid has vacated. I sure have a problem with it when I do more than usual. pretty good today. ended up walking a lot shopping, but no formal exercise.

Good morning & Happy Friday!

Nice day yesterday, except for the stove/range shopping. I might just have to limp around with the current stove until I am ready to replace all of them....getting a white slide in stove is not easy, and then I am thinking..."what happens when the refrigerator goes? with just buying a new white stove, will I be forced to replace it in white? not sure it will be that easy. The stove I was looking at 2 days ago is now on sale for $640 less, but the white one is not because it had to be ordered, they don't stock them....ugh.....

Just curious, what type of appliances do you have and are you happy you got them....by type, I mean.....stainless, black etc...

Valerie, that ride sounds tough! I wish I could have a separate cook top etc but not enough counter space. We have the range and microwave above it is built in....pretty limited on space. That is great that your DH talked his sister into the colonoscopy...I just did that with my best friend...her father died from colon cancer, and she was afraid to go....had her first one this year at 62. Luckily it turned out ok.

Lynda, will your Comfort Dinners be starting up soon?

Josie, I hope your sugar readings were an abnormality...maybe the Dr will have you recheck in a few months..Boxers are great dogs. We have one in our class on Mondays...she is so sweet.

Judy, your walking that much along with doing STS is great! I asked you over at MFP if you were walking outside, now I have my answer. With that wonderful weather why use a treadmill? Our first Fox Terrier was had multiple owners, was in the SPCA twice before we got him at 11 months old....we had NO IDEA what we were getting into...but he lasted 11 years and we loved him, all his foibles and all. I did the same when I travelled for work...tried to beg off on any of the after meeting dinners, unless they were with people I really liked.

Probably a track workout this morning, then lots of food shopping etc. Making dog food this weekend. Anyone doing anything exciting?

Take care,

Good morning ladies!

I am off today and I actually finally feel like myself. Can't wait to workout. Today I am doing a combo of Cathe's most recent live upper body express followed up with SB's most recent lower body target. I may do a little heavy bag at the end. Depend on how I feel.

Been reading thru the post so will try and recap some topics here and there.

I love pitbulls! It is such a shame that some are brought up to be horrible dogs and abused. My brother had one years ago and he was such a lovey. He did not know he was a pitbull. My niece that just got married has one also and same thing the sweetest dog you would ever meet. Our Chester had a really mean streak when we first got him. He chomped on my DH's hand when he tried to take something away. Did not require stitches but was really bruised and swollen for a bit. We almost got rid of chester but decided to work with him. One time he was so angry at me I was very fearful he was going to hurt me as he lunged at me teeth and all. Called my DH in tears. And this was a yellow lab that you see in every commercials. Anyways we obviously kept him, worked with him and we love him. He is so sweet now and has been for quite some time.

Deb...Keegan is beautiful! What a great picture. He has such a sweet look.

Lynda...I will look up Grandma as I have not heard of it.

Judy...you are doing great with STS!

Josie...I received your email but it has been buried with all my recent emails. Will be my pleasure to support such a great cause.

Val...watching the news about the Bus Crash...so sad. Looks horrific.

Have a great day all!

Deb I've had white appliances but am switching to stainless gradually. the oven & micro are stainless. the frig is old and white. next one will be stainless. (hoping I can get a French door) the ice maker has caused a lot of grief this year, and cracks are forming in the inside panels so will not last much longer. the DW is white but not that visible. I'm not such a purist that I'd throw away working appliances because I want matching colors. anyway, I think stainless is more neutral than white. when we furnished this house stainless was not that popular. the mixture of stainless and white is Ok. not ideal but certainly livable. I've read new refrigerators are not built to last like older ones. I think that applies to all major appliances these days. I would like a thermidor 6 burner also!
I'm not sure exactly how old my SIL is, but around 62. their fam history is for colon ca older. everyone refused to get scoped and died of it in their 80's. getting screened younger will make a difference! aunt betty had colon ca but survived a partial colectomy in her 80's. the others died.

Lori... yes the bus crash! seems this area makes the news for all kinds of bad things lately.
wow that is a large and luxurious looking set up. no wonder you were pleased.

we had a couple of bad behavior things with our dobie at first, but he learned what behavior was acceptable. I wouldn't dump a dog for one incident. they have to get used to you and learn how to behave. you can't tell what happened to them before you got them, and if no one trained them .... they haven't learned. if the bad behavior continues or gets worse though, I wouldn't tolerate it. I know many pit bulls are probably lovely dogs, but all the bad press made me too nervous about them.

Josie my younger brother and sister both have type 2 diabetes, so I watch my numbers. my fathers' side had a lot of diabetes, although I'm not sure my father did. Last time I had labs done, the blood draw was around 11 am after my physical exam. I'd eaten breakfast. the value was just a little above normal fasting levels ( usually about 70-100) but perfectly fine since I was not "fasting" at that time. still, the number gets flagged as "elevated". I think it was 103. Still, wise to be watching it.

Hi everyone--

This morning I did KCM's Cardio Quick Fix both workouts (44:39).

Deb, we have all stainless steel--Thermidor stove, LG French door fridge, and Kitchen Aid dishwasher, which is too noisy but does a good job. We have had minor repairs on the fridge, which was making too much ice, and on the dishwasher, most of them caused by our very hard water I think. Otherwise, they have stood up pretty well. Comfort Sunday meals don't start until things slow down in the restaurant business. Right now is beginning of fall foliage leaf peepers coming through, and things stay pretty busy until after New Year's. We're going out tomorrow night to celebrate DH's birthday, but other than that a not-very-busy weekend other than Housemax and food shopping for next week.

Gosh, Lori, that looks like a very posh apartment in NYC or Boston. I bet you are happy though to be back and into your workouts.

Valerie, that's great that you managed to convince her to get a colonoscopy. Now that she knows it's not all that bad she won't be afraid to do it again.

Judy, that's great work on the walking with STS. I should be outside walking more too because it's been lovely and crisp. Too much cooking/baking lately and standing around in the kitchen.

After Max, I would definitely get another English Shepherd. He really is the sweetest-tempered dog I have ever had, and, of course, he has a great life on a farm where he is never tied up. He does shed though, but usually in tuffets, so it is easy just to pick up. DH sheds more than Max to be absolutely honest! I have loved all of my dogs--English Springers, several mutts, miniature Schnauzer, standard poodle mix, Shepherd-Husky mix (Although this one was constantly getting into fights with other male dogs). I always thought I wanted a beagle, but they just follow a scent and are off running, or else they are baying their heads off. We have a friend with two beagles who are constantly running off (she has a horse farm) and being found sometimes miles away from home.

Josie, my last blood sugar reading after fasting was 85--right in the middle of the 70-100 range. Funny how I check my lab results when they come up for discussion here. My cholesterol is a little high--225, but my HDL is 126, so the doctor says I am okay.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Good morning & Happy Saturday!

We did get a range last night....white with stainless handles and knobs. I guess I wanted to compromise in case when I need to replace the refrigerator I am not able to get a white one. I hope I like it once it's delivered.

Lori, I bet you were exhausted after that trip, smart to take a day off. I only knew one person in the club that had a pit bull...he was so sweet. It's amazing what a loving home can do for some dogs. Chester must have had some trust issues, but with you and your DH sticking it out with him it worked out and he turned out to be a wonderful pet. That hotel suite was amazing.

Valerie, same here on throwing away working appliances, however, I do think I am going to start looking at a refrigerator...the one we have is 17 years old. Nothing worse than having it break down and having to desperately start looking for one. That is when you have to almost take anything you can get. I don't want to have to get one that way.

Lynda, enjoy your dinner! Max has the perfect home for his breed, and he is a happy dog for sure.

Hi to Judy, & Josie,

We are going to take a ride and stop at countryside restaurant today, I have a gift card that someone gave me when I retired....it is a great place, but quite a distance away. I know we will come back with at least some maple syrup. it's the real thing and it's delicious.

https://spraguesmaplefarms.com/

Have a great weekend!

Deb, IMO the best way to keep appliances working is to go look for new ones! I agree on the frig thing, best not done in desperation. I should look up how old mine is, not sure. I did some measurements a while ago and can fit a French door. I have a side by side. no room for big door swing here. the ice maker doesn't work right in warm weather, and the inside of the frig is developing all these hairline cracks but otherwise still working OK.
I thought my washing machine was dying about a year ago. Did CR research for what I'd replace it with..... brand, size, top loader. washers/dryers have gotten very expensive and fancy so takes some shopping. but sure enough, it straightened out and has worked fine since. as with the frig, if it fails suddenly I've at least done some homework. Hope you like your new stove . I'm happy with white/ stainless but am moving toward SS now that they resist fingerprints better than at first. so much new construction has gone with white cabinets .. with white appliances , you'd need sunglasses in your kitchen to keep down the glare.
I did ch,ba,sh and core 1 yesterday. increased some weights,. still sticking with knee push ups to be safe.

we're loading up to leave tomorrow for yellowstone area. will spend about a week but I will probably be able to check in while traveling .

Yes, that is the thing with colonoscopy..... people are so apprehensive.... then have it done... and wonder what all the fuss was about. she is so happy she went ahead with it, all that worry for nothing. . we still have a younger brother to work on, not sure if he's 50 yet.
