Good morning,

This morning I did the workout #1 from KCM Plateau Busters. 29 minutes 188 calories burned. This is definitely a circuit workout, and very unique...not a traditional weight move it the whole thing. Kelley comes up with different moves all the time.

Garance, let me know what you think of it. I plan on doing the second one maybe Thursday.

Hair & pedicure done, plus a few errands, get a battery for my watch etc.

Maybe a bike ride this afternoon, or tomorrow. Definitely before the weekend is done.

Take care,

Deb, this will sound stupid (???) but how do the books get onto e readers? do you download them somehow? what choice pf books would you have? I was thinking how much easier it would be if we could put some of our reference books on an e device for traveling. they take up a lot of space and are heavy. but I never thought about where the book content came from.

did yard work yesterday. lots of it.

today we were going to repeat that bike ride/hike from 2 weeks ago but we got to the trailhead and there were 4 trucks parked there. we wondered what (??)they were doing up a closed road. we then noticed one truck was parked on top of a ladder and decided they used the ladder to get motorcycles in and out of the truck bed. the road "start" would be possible only for walkers, bicycles, or motircycles and we thought we saw their tracks when we were there 2 weeks ago. so we decided to save the trip for another day. no way am I going to work that hard and then have to ride thru a motorcycle camp or have them buzzing up and down the road. holiday weekends are usually best to stay home and not get disappointed.

Hi,

to get books from either Barnes & Noble.( Nook) or Amazon ( Kindle) you just switch the device over to WiFi and you search and select the book and it downloads automatically through the wireless router. ( not sure if you have one on your pc).

for the library, you connect the device to the pc using the USB cable it comes with, and you download from the library right to something called Adobe Digital Editions ( which you get when you sign up on the library site..it's free), and then when it is there, you just drag it over to the nook. It sounds a lot more complicated than it really is.

Most of the classics are free from B&N and Amazon, and lots of free sites with them too. Not sure about reference books, it would depend on what it is. Give me an example of one and I will look it up for you.

the nice thing about the Nook, they have "Free Book Friday".... I don't always like the book offered, but sometimes they are good reads, interesting, and FREE!

Hi Deb and Valerie--

This morning I did the double premix on KCM Plateau Busters (45 min.). This is a very good circuit workout with a lot of compound moves with weights to get the legs involved. I started with 10s and 5s, but after the shoulders, I decided to move down to 8s. I think I will be moving back and forth between 8s and 10s for the heavy moves. I worked up quite a sweat. I will be doing the cardio one tomorrow, both workouts together. I love the modifier and wish Cathe would use one.

Invited to friends for dinner tonight. Should be fun. Sigh--summer is officially over I guess when Labor Day rolls around.

Good morning and Happy Labor Day!

Had a good night;s sleep, only got up once and again when John left at 4:30 to go fishing, I sort of heard him. Other than that it was good. I swear I will sleep much better once retired.

Garance, I used 8's and 5's for the workout and it was work! I didn't look at the pre-mixes yet. What does the double one have? I also like the modifier on these, and wish Cathe would do one. I can't fathom why she is resistant to that? Lots of us that have been around here for a long time are getting to the point where we can't jump around like she does any more.

I think I will do a C25K workout, replacing the jogging with walking fast again. Maybe I will end up being able to race walk for 5K!

Hi to Valerie, Joan and Josie, hope everyone is having a nice weekend.

Deb could you try the 'Sibley guide to birds of western north america"? author is david allen sibley. I could get this for my phone but I'm not sure I'd like going back and forth to ID pictures on the tiny screen. It's an android phone and I can do some things on it.

we did some vacation prep yesterday after our long useless drive. today we'll do a local bike ride and save the hike for wed. I should just never plan on anything for labor day, always too hard to get away from people.

Valerie, this is the only one I can find by that person in the Nook books. There are a lot of other birding guides though....
BARNES & NOBLE | Sibley's Birding Basics by David Allen Sibley, Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group | NOOK Book (eBook), Paperback

If it is this kind of book, I would think color would be important, so the Nook Color would be the one to look at. Amazon didn't have any for the Kindle, probably because they don't have color unless you buy the Kindle Fire which is a larger tablet.

that clarifies it somewhat... yes, you need color. the kind of books I was thinking about were references, like for bird ID, plant ID, animals, hiking guides. for most, color is important. that's the right author, but his beginners book and I'm more advanced than that. usually we carry a birding guide but it's heavy and leave it in the car and try to work from memory ...not always reliable. I think Sibley is best, although we have the older Peterson books too but don't use them any more. thanks for looking for me!

I could get the sibley e-guide which would go to my phone or DH's ipod. I'm not too good with the small touch screen. it's so easy to tap it too long or more than once and end up all over the place. I always carry the phone anyway so that's probably what I should do.

Hi Deb and Valerie--

This morning I did the double premix on KCM's Quick Fix (44 min.). Solid cardio, and very easy choreo. The second one is tough and tabata like, reminds me of Cathe, except, once again, the MODIFIER! What a pleasure to be able to do the whole workout rather than some premix that Cathe has created for lower impact that skips around. Besides, I do something that isn't quite as modified as the modifier and involves a bit of jumping. I also took out my disks for a jacks interval.

Deb, the other workout is just different exercises, compound moves with the heavy and light dumbbells. I just like a longer workout. I did look at the bonus moves on this one, and they look very challenging. Yes, I sleep better now. If I were teaching, I would be in my anticipatory first class mode, worried about first impressions, anxious about whether I will like the classroom chemistry, etc.

Had a very nice meal with friends last night. They served delicious charcoal grilled shrimp, a bread salad, and I made a black bean, corn, cilantro, lime juice, onion salad. Sorbet for dessert. Yum! Stayed up too late, though.

Good morning,

This morning I did workout #2 from KCM's Plateau Buster. This one is only 25 minutes, ( very strange since it's called "30 minutes to Fitness"). I looked at the pre-mixes and there are some good ones, ( Garance thanks for pointing that out), that combine workouts and make them longer. Lots of good choices and I like that the workout time is listed. I'll try one of those next time.

Valerie, my grandmother was an avid bird watcher, belonged to the Audubon Society ( I think that's what it was), and always carried a Peterson book of birds. She used to be able to mimic their sounds so well, that to this day, if I hear a Cardinal etc, I thnk of her.

Garance, I will definitely be looking at the pre-mixes, she did a really good job with them on PB. She even has an all cardio one, that would be good too. I didn't think about using the disks, they would work well with some of the cardio moves.

Of course, had a crappy night's sleep, but since I woke up at 4:06, I figured I might as well get up and do a workout. No classes this week at night, so I want to try to get all workouts in before the weekend. The obedience trial is this weekend, I am in charge of the workers for the rings, then we drop the dogs off late Sunday night, and we are leaving Monday. I am tired thinking about it!

Take care,

Deb, we are casual birders but it's a nice thing to include in other activities. we don't usually go out with the sole purpose of bird watching but if we're hiking, biking, or driving it becomes a part of it. sibley has replaced peterson as the best detailed bird guide. I'm not someone who can sort out every seagull on the planet but I can ID a lot of western birds accurately. I'm not good with bird sounds but color and behavior are good for me.

I wonder if small dogs can be trained to use a litter box? do they stay in a kennel at night? I keep thinking it would be a way to sleep longer.

Lynda I love black bean salads like that. love lime, corn, cilantro all those flavors together. I make bean and grain salads all summer. I run into issues with DH and cilantro. I love it and he thinks it tastes like soap & picks it out of everything. parsley I dislike and never use it but love cilantro. and fresh basil.

did a 5 mile ride yesterday. we both have new tires and it changed our mileage a little bit. same ride, both bikes different mileage than with older tires.

Hi Deb, Josie, and Valerie--

This morning I did the upper body premix on High Reps (39 min.).

Valerie, I think I heard or read somewhere that cilantro has something to do with taste buds, and some people just hate it--like Julia Child. I love that salad because it's so colorful and easy to make. I'm doing Chinese this week. Made chicken with walnuts last night and tonight it's Szechuan eggplant with noodles, and tomorrow it's "ants climb a tree" using ground pork. I have a very old, falling apart and favorite Szechuan cookbook that I love.

Deb, I bet you are so looking forward to your vacation. I suppose I will have to get the thread started next week?

Back to my writing here.

Hi Ladies,

Had a nice relaxing weekend, went to yoga and TRX/body sculpting class on Saturday and to yoga blend class on Sunday. I did not workout yesterday. My DS showed up and surprised us.

He is having so much trouble with his second wife, she keeps running back to her mom every time she has a tantrum and not allowing my DS to see his son. He sure knows how to pick them. I’m sure this is going to end in divorce  Hi wife is 23 and very immature and has no aspirations to go to school or work. She does not clean or cook and gets upset when my DS corrects her 2 year old DD. She wants my DS to be a father to her, but gets upset when he corrects her. That little girl is such a brat!

I will be spinning at lunch time and maybe taking a yoga class in the evening.

Have a great day!

Josie

sure seems like people love or hate cilantro..... not a lot of in between opinions. I try to keep it on my side of the plate but I won't not use it use it because it adds so much to the dish for me. I'm thinking Ina Garten ( barefoot contessa) doesn't like it either. now tarragon is one I really can't stand and I know a lot of people love it.

I should edit my previous post it was a 25 mile ride not 5. takes us about 2 hours including a bathroom stop and a few short butt breaks and shift breaks. my gears are giving me grief again and refuse to shift up to the large sprocket. I have to stop, get off, and shift while manually turning the wheels. then it shifts easily. but not while I'm riding. guess it needs a tune up again. it's been a on and off problem since I got the bike. I'm short in the torso and might not be able to push the shift lever far enough but that's as far as I can reach and I'm not getting any taller. I will be more careful about this on my next bike purchase.
josie, that's too bad about your DIL. a 23 yr old still running back to her own mother is a bad sign for maturity, or rather lack of it. doesn't clean, cook, work, or go to school...?? what does she do all day?

Good morning,

Today I did wk 4 of C25K, fast walking in place of running. Tough one.

Valerie, I wouldn't want a dog litter box, but I am sure they can be trained to use a certain area etc. I have heard of people in apartments ( like in NYC) that their dogs never go outside, but are trained with these pads they have. I love cilantro. It's a good thing because it is DH's favorite to use for cooking. Have you ever had the burito bowl at Chipotle? They make their rice with cilantro and lime, YUM! I recommended it to someone, not thinking at all about the rice, and they said they didn't like it at all, the rice had way too much of something it it, and I figured out it was the cilantro that they didn't like. I agree, you either love it or hate it.

Garance, what is the chicken with walnut recipe? I will be here until Monday am. If I am up early Sunday and able to get on the computer before the obedience trial I can start the thread, if it's not started by 8:00, it means I'm gone and not back until really late that night. We take the dogs that night, after the trial. The shift on my bike is actually in the handle bars themselves, I just have to twist my wrist and it shifts. I liked that way better than the lever type. DH said he wishes he would have gotten one like that instead of the levers.

Josie, yes, what does your DIL do all day? ( or is it Ex-DIL?). How is P90x going?

off to shower and get ready. 3 days to go, but who's counting?

Hi Deb, Josie, and Valerie--

This morning I did the low impact premix on Crossfire (56 min.).

Deb, chicken with walnuts is a somewhat elaborate stir-fry. You really have to get all of the ingredients arranged first and then the stir-fry goes fast. There are water chestnuts, bamboo shoots, scallions, Chinese mushrooms (need to be soaked) and 1/2 C. red pepper cut in squares in the stir fry itself, and the sauce is ground bean paste, hoisin, a little bit of sugar, dry sherry, soy sauce and at the last minute you put in a little bit of sesame oil. You deep-fry the walnuts and they are the garnish. You also quickly fry hot dried red peppers and a big chunk of ginger to give the oil flavor, remove them when they are nice and brown, and then stir fry the chicken, remove it, stir fry all the vegetables, put the chicken back in with the sauce and simmer until everything is nice and hot. It is really, really, REALLY yummy.

Josie, too bad about your dil. Is she similar to your first dil? If she is, it sounds like your son is doomed to making the same mistake in the women he chooses. Tell him to find someone like his dazzling and totally reliable and sane mom.

Hi Valerie!

Hi Ladies,

I only did my spinning class yesterday, did not get a change to do my sculpt workout. I will take a yoga class tonight.

Deb and Valerie, my DIL gets up at noon and the 2 year old does the same. My DS goes to school every night from 6-10 and takes care of the baby because he wakes up early. She then get ready for the day by putting on her make up which is impeccable and then sits and watches TV all day long. I don’t know why my DS does not put his foot down, but oh well! It sounds like it will be my ex-DIL at this point. I hope!!

My DD started working for her favorite store called LF. It is a fancy clothing store where she gets to model the clothes and helps the clients put outfits together. They are also working on setting up a blog to promote the store and she will be writing the reviews.
She is also doing an internship 2 days per week at a place called Jewel Mint. She writes about who is wearing the latest products. She is still looking for a job in her field.

Garance, my DS’s first wife was about the same at first, except that she is smart and resourceful. She has come a long way and has matured a great deal. She and I have a good relationship and she calls me often for advice.

I told him to give himself time and concentrate in school and his kids and to be patient.
I told him that he will find someone that will complement him and will be willing to work together to make a better life for themselves. I also told him to get a vasectomy ;)

Josie

Josie I love the vasectomy advice.

I hate cilantro. I can't even eat the dish if I pick it out.

I'm hoping the two days of lifting is enough. Tues is upper body and Thur is lower body. Seven days a week is 30 min. on treadmill. I know this is less than what everyone else does but I think I could keep this up long term. I'm trying to balance my eating to my activity level.

Joan

Good morning,

Today I did one of the combination pre-mixes from KCM Plateau Buster, where she does the weight work only from each, twice through. Whew...35 minutes. Great workout.

Garance, that chicken dish sounds complicated, but delicious!

Josie, I LOL when I read the end of your post. What is your DD's field?

Joan, that does not sound like an easy rotation at all! 7 days with treadmill and upper and lower weights is great! It's a lot more than I do in a week.

I am thinking of downloading Travel Fit to my iPod and taking it with me when we go away, just in case I feel like something besides walking etc. Haven't made up my mind yet. It is a tiny screen to see but how much do you really need to see?

Off to shower and get ready, 2 more days....

well, that's what I mean about cilantro.... no in betweens. I love it in salsa. and especially with avocado, another favorite. I have a little avocado (somewhere) almost every day. love it... rather than eat a whole bowl of guacamole I dole it out in small amounts. 1/4 avocado per day.

so tuesday ... went to yoga and then did disk 25 later. used same weights as previously. we are going on vacation in about 10 days so this cycle will get interrupted and I will probably have to restart it in oct. I don't think I can take a 2 week break and then pick up where I left off. we did a hike yesterday, about 6 hours 7 miles, 3000 feet up and down. it was stunning, lovely, beautiful. my calves are sore this morning. all else is OK.

joan, that's great... you need the consistency and to get back in a habit.

lynda, I love stir fries. I try to cook like that most of the time, getting everything out and chopped in bowls before starting. mise en place to go all french on you. . goes much smoother than prepping as you go. I have electric and find I can't get pans hot enough to do a proper stir fry. that sounds delicious.

oh josie too bad your son married a self centered ditz. sounds like she has an incredibly boring and unrewarding life. how could anyone watch TV all day?? acck!! you gave him good advice, hopefully he will heed your advice and not end up complicating things by ending up with a housefull of babies that he ends up paying support forwhile his wife sits around eating bonbons.
