Good morning,

Starting the new week's thread. I have to get ready to leave for the show.

Remembering 10 years ago today and how horrible that day was. I also remember how the country rallied together like I had never seen before. I wish we were as patriotic now as we were in the days/months folllowing that awful time.

Off to get something to eat and go...take care.

Hi Deb and any later posters--

This morning I did BBL High and Tight (40 min.) and Tummy Tuck (20 min.).

Went out to dinner last night and had a wonderful pasta dish and my usual Manhattan. I think the pasta dish is Strezzanetta which translates as "strangle neck" because of the shape of the pasta. I wish I knew how to make homemade pasta because it's so much better than the store stuff.

Deb, my tear ducts cannot take watching all of the 911 coverage. I just start crying. I did watch the opening of the memorial, and even on TV, the waterfalls seemed to be glistening. Also loved the music, esp. Paul Simon singing the Sound of Silence and Yo-Yo Ma's Bach. The engraved names reminds me of the Viet Nam Memorial.

We totally missed 9/11 when it happened. we were in the mountains of colorado camping and came out a few days later and could NOT figure out what was going on. all the flags, and everyone acting strangely, some very bizarre postings on the hiking trail registers. No radio reception. when we got to Az where we were staying I bought a paper and tried to catch up on events. I felt like we were the only people in the country who didn't know what had happened. Too bad some of that "united" feeling has totally gone by the wayside.

Did a bike ride today, 25 fast miles. will do another tomorrow since it's still too hot to hike. Did GS back/biceps on friday. Hopwe to hike wed when it cools off. it will look totally different as it's been hot and sunny and most of the snow MUST be gone by now.

I've made pasta before and maybe I had a bad recipe, but I decided I liked the commercial stuff better. or maybe the cook's fault. there must be more to it than it seems.

Hey all,

The trial this weekend went off with only a few minor hitches, mostly with a couple of cranky judges. All in all our club handled it well.

Garance, we have a pasta maker that we have not used in about 25 years. It didn't seem that difficult when we did it, but very time consuming, and I am with Valerie, I didn't see what the big fuss was about. We had a moment of silence at the trial, before we sant the US and Canadian anthems.

Valerie, I can't imagine coming out of woods and not knowing what had happened. That had to be so strange with how the people were acting etc. As soon as you turned on anything, radio, TV etc you would have gotten the full story. I do miss that united feeling too.

Hi to Josie, Joan & Cathy,

take care,

It was bizarre... we were in a different state and thought we'd ended up in some kind of local pro america rally or something! we were close to the end of vacation anyway, so headed home. we lost the antenna to our truck a short time before... got caught on a tree branch and ripped off... so we had music but no radio, which was a weird coincidence. I bought a paper and we turned on the TV at the motel and got up to speed maybe because we never sat thru the day of events... it was all old news by the time we saw anything... it hasn't affected us as much as many others.

we have a hand crank pasta maker and I really tried when I first got it. due to lacking skill or poor recipes, I never got anything that was memorable. OK, but not worth all the effort. I like pasta a lot but my "home made" wasn't that good. I'd take Ronzoni any day!

not to get too political here, but we could use a little of that "united" spirit these days. I don't remember any time when it seemed like so many angry disaffected people were screaming in each others faces. except maybe anti vietnam protests. that was a stormy time too. actually that was probably worse but I'm not looking forward to the next election season.

Hi Deb, Valerie, and any later posters--

This morning I did Sweat Express II (58 min.).

Maybe when I retire I will ask to watch the chef prepare his pasta at Mezze's--it's all good. The tagliatelle and orecchette are just wonderful and this new one was really good, too. Of course the sauces are important too.

Valerie, I was on sabbatical and watching the Today show and saw the whole thing as it was happening, with Katie Couric and Matt Lauer on the phone with witnesses to the first tower, and then a camera on the second tower when the plane hit. It was just the most awful day because then it was the Pentagon and the crash in PA. A lot of people just wondered if the attacks would keep coming. The next week felt like PTSD because they kept playing the footage over and over and over and there was nothing on TV but the ongoing crisis. The "next" election season? I feel like our politicians are NEVER out of election-mode. They only think about their talking points and how to secure themselves for another round of attack ads and money-raising. It makes me sick to my stomach. Ugh! And you can watch this jobs bill get stalled forever in the House. There's no reason to give Obama a victory this close to the next election. Who cares about the poor? They don't vote.

Off my soapbox.

Hi Ladies,

The 2 co-workers in my office are getting on my nerve, they are so loud! I did the bar method on Saturday and Sunday, my plan was to go spinning on Saturday after the bar class, but my legs were fried, so I went and got a haircut instead.

I will go spinning tonight. My DD and I are really enjoying our classes. I renewed for another month of unlimited classes.

Garance, I only watched the ceremonies for a minute myself because I'm like you. I started crying and could not stop. It brought back memories of dropping my DS at the airport when he left for boot camp on September 5th and then 9/11 happened and all I could think was that there was going to be a war and my DS would be part of it. Now, here we are 10 year later and 5 deployments under his belt.

Hi Joan, Cathy Valerie and Deb!

Josie

Good morning!

We went to puppy class last night and I was surprised that the little "vixen" was actually afraid of the bigger puppies, her tail tucked between her legs and wanting me to hold her. I thought with how she is with Keegan that she would be over joyed at seeing other dogs. You can never tell I guess. I'm sure it will change in the next 9 weeks.

Nothing new going on here, just work, eat, sleep, etc.

Take care,

Well, things aren't going according to plan. DH woke up not feeling too great yesterday so we decided not to do the scheduled ride. we did misc yard work and a little shopping. we have expensive "jacks" that attach the camper to the truck. Read they're easily stolen. anyone who "knows" can walk right up and remove them without fuss. we saw a similar camper on the road with padlocks on and decided it was a priority... went to Lowes and got a set of 4 small padlocks with one key to lock them to the camper.

DH felt worse as the day went on, coughing, sore throat etc. so I'm exiled to the guest room and we're wiping down or washing every common surface in hopes I don't get this too. in the usual sequence I would be getting this about the day we leave. so I started up vitamin c and dug out the zinc. crap. that is the problem with one vacation a year. you are vulnerable to things like this.

did LBB later yesterday. I get thru it pretty decently now and don't get sore.

Josie that must be extremely difficult to see your son go off so many times. that is a lot of deployments... is he done now? I'm trying to remember what I know you said about it previously.

Deb, maybe that's a proper dog response. she's small, the others are bigger and maybe that will keep her from getting into trouble.

Lynda the partisan politics has reached the point where I think the repubs (especially the repubs) would allow seriously harm to the US rather than do anything that might benefit the dems in the process. they've made that clear time after time. I don't care how much obama tries to reach a common ground, their goal is to burn down the house to prevent his reelection.

Joan & Cathy checkin so we know you're still out there kicking!

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan (?), Cathy (?), and Valerie--

This morning I did both of KCM's Split Sessions (60 min.). I was planning on starting meso 3, but then I looked at the disk for ch, sh, tris and it was a whopping 68 min. plus all the equipment to drag out (add another 10 min.). Just could not do it. I guess I will wait until after the wedding and then try to do meso 3.

Josie, did your son enlist like so many others right after 9/11? He's finally done with the deployments, if I recall. It must feel good to have him home. Did you have that power outage last week?

Valerie, I hope you don't catch that cold. I hate colds, and as I get older, I have fewer and fewer of them. I keep thinking, "Wow, maybe I've had most of the rhinoviruses!" Sigh--I know that's silly. I agree with you about the political situation, which just seems to be getting worse. I guess what bothers me most is politicians who say "government is the problem." Then why run for office if you hate governing?

Deb, maybe you should re-name Kylee "Vixen." Is she very foxy with Keegan?

Yoga was really good this morning. 45 minutes passed before I even glanced at the clock. She is such a good instructor, she makes hard things fun and we'll try things we'd NEVER do if someone lesser were teaching.

Tee hee.. I used to think I'd had every rhinovirus that existed too.. I get fewer colds but somewhat because of less exposure. not out in the workplace all day, everyday anymore. also smarter about washing/sanitizing my hands, and not touching my face. diligent about not using the same towels, cups, or close contact. it's worth keeping a little distance if at least sometimes only one person gets sick instead of both. It will be rough if I get this cold.

I am so tired of people saying "government is the problem".. especially the seniors who rely on social security and medicare. we live in an increasingly complex world. I don't think for a second that business can be trusted to do the "right" thing.... like banks and financial institutions can be trusted to manage things fairly & properly without oversight. or that your private health insurance company is looking out for your best interests. Yeah...right...

Hi Ladies,

I will be going to my bar class tonight. There has been so much drama at work that I just can't wait until I retire.

Garance, My DS joined the NAVY before 9/11. I had to drop him off for boot camp on 9/5 a few days before 9/11. I was a zombie for a few weeks, because I knew that he was going to be part of the war. He was on the USS Constellation, one of the first ships that went to IRAQ. He was there for 7 months on his first deployment.

Valerie, my DS in now in the reserves.

Hi Cathy, Joan and Deb!

Josie

Good morning,

I am not sure if I mentioned that John will be having surgery on October 3rd. It is a minor procedure, or so they say, but he will probably have to stay one night due to the balance issue it will cause. I am taking the week off so I can be here. We have our fingers crossed that this will help. Still not getting up to work out. Maybe soon though. If Kylee would sleep until 4-4:30 I would get up and do a workout after letting her out. Last night it was 3:30 and I just could not do it. One more hour kiddo! She has a vet apt today to get the rest of her puppy shots, and we are bringing a urine sample in of Keegan's to see how he is doing with the stone issue.

Valerie, I hope your DH is better and you don't catch it!

Garance, one nice thing about KCM, minimal equipment! Do you work out in your living room or do you have a separate area? When is the wedding? Yes, she is a little vixen for sure!

Josie, you will be ready for the new Cathe barre workout! I can't imagine how you must have felt when your son was just sent out and then 9/11 happened.

Off to get ready for work,

Hi Deb, Josie, and Valerie--

This morning I did Bootcamp Boogie (63 min.).

Deb, the wedding is on September 25 in Santa Cruz at a resort called Chaminade. We're leaving on the 22nd and returning on the 27th. We plan a bit of sightseeing in addition to the various pre-wedding events. I hope the operation helps John and goes well. Maybe by that time we will have Cathe's new workouts in our hot little hands. I work out in the titular "living room" which is almost unused, because we have a large addition with a 52 inch TV where DH watches sports, and a bedroom suite where I watch movies and programs on a 48 inch TV. The living room has a little TV and some nice furniture and that is where I work out. A great big window with an enviable view. Not sure I could work out so happily if I were put in the basement. I have equipment (step, barbells, dowell, ball) in a little closet, but my dumbbells are all lined up in the living room.

Josie, I would have been a zombie, too. I am happy that neither one of my sons showed any interest in joining the military. You must be proud of him, but also happy that he's home. 5 deployments is a lot!

Valerie, that's great that you have such a good yoga teacher. I took a class awhile ago, and just never really enjoyed it. I hope I will like Cathe's yoga workouts.

Hi to Joan and Cathy!

Good morning,

Not much new to report here. Puppy slept until 4:00 am, maybe soon one half hour more and I will be ready to do a workout once she goes out etc. It was pouring when we were out there at 4:00..ugh.

Garance, I love Santa Cruz!! We go there when we visit John's family in Ca. It's kind of a blast from the past for him and his sisters. They used to go to the boardwark when they were young and a favorite place when they were teens. Kind of a hokey place with the most unhealthy food you could ever want, like deep fried Twinkies! Went this past August, it's nice. We have never actually stayed there.

I have a decent size area in the finished part of our basement that I have set up as a workout area. It's not the greatest, but it is out of the way at least. I need to get rid of a bunch of stuff and clean it up though. Some day when I am energetic again. Ha!

It's pouring here now, and very cool. I am afraid we are going to get an early fall.

Take care,

Hi Deb, Josie, and Valerie--

This morning I did BBL Sculpt (50 min.).

Deb, I'm looking forward to seeing Santa Cruz because I've heard how beautiful it is. I've been told that the giant redwoods are gorgeous, so I think one of our side trips will be a national park and a hike. We are getting our first taste of fall too tonight and through the weekend. Not really ready for the cold yet.

Going out to dinner with friends tonight to celebrate a birthday (not mine yet!) for one of them. I must remember to record Project Runway.

Josie, that must have been horrid, going thru 9/11 knowing your son was going to be in the forefront of the response. at least a boat is usually a better position than ground troops. He's certainly done his share with 5 deployments. time to stand down. what a relief that must be to have him finished.

we have a workout room in our basement. It's a daylight basement so not dark and dingy, with big windows. I keep my dumbells on inexpensive general purpose metal shelving I got at Lowes. It's a compact rack but holds the whole set, up to 30 lbs. the plates are usually on barbells, one on the floor, one on the Cathe rack. we also have a treadmill, elliptical, stationary bike, weight bench, and a small "home gym". we are both short and I found after using it for a while that I did better with free weights. somehow angles were usually wrong for me. Also TV, DVD/VCR. It's nice to have everything in one room that doesn't need to be totally cleaned up to make things presentable. we decided long ago (after trying it) that we weren't "go to the gym" people and preferred a home set up. I get really tired of other people, their noise & sweat, and also having to drive there and back. so this works well for us.

so far no virus for me and DH is on the mend. hoping this works because we want to leave sunday. gone for about 2 weeks unless we get tired of what we're doing, or the weather poops out.

I've been to lots of places in CA but I don't think Santa Cruz.... I'm not much of a beach person & we usually have headed up in the mts. also the wuilderness areas in the north part of the state. we've been to yosemite, kings canyon, sequoia etc. Love the redwoods though. Have a great trip.

I took yesterday off exercise. today, a very tough yoga class. lynda, I went to several classes before this one and my current teacher is vastly superior to any other instructors I had. plus she's 40-ish and has a lighthearted approach (not tedious) so we all laugh a lot even though we work hard. and she is in fantastic shape and is so good at showing us what to strive for. Hope Cathe's yoga is effective. If I didn't have this class I love, I would have bought them too. will do another exercise session today, not sure what yet.

Hi Ladies,

I might not work out tonight, my stomach is bothering me. If I feel better before 6:15, I will go to the bar class.

Garance, Santa Cruz was the first town where we camped out when I did the aids life cycle. Getting out of Santa Cruz was a pain in the butt, but it was a nice little town.
Have you bought any new clothes for fall?

Valerie, my home gym is in our garage, and now I have more room since my DS took all the furniture that I had been saving for him. I have a treadmill and free weights a barbell the long step and the high step and bands, jump rope, medicine ball and the ab ball and a couple of benches. I can now set my bike and use it as a spinning bike.

Deb, it has been cool in our area and it sort of feels like fall here too.

Hi Joan and Cathy!

Josie

good morning everyone.

I cranked out LBB last night while dinner was cooking. that's another thing I like about home workouts.... I had an hour to burn and instead of driving back and forth & wasting most of the time, I could go downstairs and get in a workout. I also appreciate that I don't have to drag things out and put them away every time. we use almost everything although we rotate so it doesn't get boring.

Deb, hope things work out for DH and that the procedure is successful. also hope your puppy learns to sleep in a little so you can get in some workouts.

Hi Deb, Josie, and Valerie--

This morning I did Dancin' Abs (58 min.).

Very fall-like today. It went down to 39 degrees last night and threatens a freeze tonight. Must cover garden!!

Josie, yes, I've bought a couple of dresses at Myhabit.com and a local boutique has a line of clothes labeled Comfy, and I've been buying some of their pieces, because they are totally Comfy--very soft, sort of wrinkly knit. I have decided to buy only items made in America, which has definitely turned me away from a variety of items I would have purchased otherwise. I also bought my initials by Erte by bidding on them at propertyroom.com. They look so good on my blazers.

Had veal schnitzel and a big spinach salad for dinner last night. Brought half of the schnitzel home like I always do. There was also a birthday cake, and I had a sliver of that. Yum!

Enjoy the weekend everyone!
