Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 9/10/2023

Good afternoon. This morning I did Jane Adams Gentle Yoga Morning Energy practice for 18 minutes. I’m trying to get back on schedule with my workouts.

Cathy, nice job with 30 Minute Kickboxing Express. Your trip to the zoo sounds like a very trying outing. It’s too bad that your husband didn’t enjoy it more.

Diane Sue, great job with CDorner Step and getting some housework done.

Hello to Valerie and Judy.

Good morning. we did a ride this morning, not our usual longer sunday one, but the close to home one. I got pretty sore but mostly I didn't want to get up and moving early enough to do the longer one.
it worked OK though. our shorter ride has a bridge across a good size river. there is a salmon run this morning. don't know how long it's been going but it was fascinating and wonderful to watch. thousands of big fish streaming up the river sometimes flashing on the surface, and mostly just steadily swimming upstream. from the bridge we could see hundreds at a time. fishing is not open there now. I'm not a "fishing "person but so many salmon runs are dwindling that it was great to see so many fish. no dams on this river. the water is not high right now but this is still a good size river.

Cathy your husband needs to get out more....

Well for the most part the day went just as planned. Got up at 4:45, and was in the car backing out by 5:25, and that's when I realized that it was very foggy. And it stayed very foggy, for the first two hours of the drive. So, that meant, I couldn't always drive full speed, actually for most of that time I didn't drive full speed. I didn't have to creep along, but I certainly wasn't feeling like driving the posted 75 mph. Then it was sunny and clear until about half hour from the bridge when it started spitting rain, and it basically stayed drizzly all the way to Marquette. Stopped about the time I got to Derek's place. We discussed options other than climbing Hogback, but this is my last chance before he graduates. We knew the rocks would be wet and potentially slippery but decided to give it a go. Was a bit more adventurous then the other time we went when it was nice and dry. There is very, very little just dirt path. The whole thing is basically roots and rocks of various sizes. It took us an hour to get to and up and an hour get down and back to the car. One of those things where majority of the time is to get to the "mountain" (because I know that it's not tall enough to qualify as a mountain outside Michigan) And then you have to climb up rocks of varying sizes. It's not straight up, but it's very steep. And today's bonus was it being all wet. Slid a bit a couple times, but didn't land on my butt. I felt so bad though because we were talking to a couple girls who were going down to our up, and I said it would be harder going down because of the mom... and down one of them went. I didn't even finish saying momentum. Felt like I jinxed her. From what I can figure, since the rest of may activity was sitting in a car and walking in and out of rest areas, I ended up with almost 13,000 steps and 4 1/2 miles.

Valerie I'm glad you were able to get your ride in and how cool to see the salmon running.

Carolyn nice job with Jane Adams Gentle Yoga Morning Energy practice.

Diane Sue great job with CDorner Step # 318 Intermediate Fat burning 70's music.

Today I just did STS 2 mobility #1. After the workout and cleaning yesterday, I am exhausted today. I did give my dog a bath today though. It is past due. I have had to make her wear a cone when I cannot keep my eye on her. Before we left, she had what I thought looked like another lipoma on the side of her face, but it started swelling the night before and I put compresses on it. Well, when I got her back from my sons, it was all crusted and when I cleaned it it bled. Couldn't take her to the vet since we were sick, so have taken care of it. It looks like it is healing and bleeding stopped. She wants to scratch it periodically though. She has an appointment the 29th anyway for her shots and stuff. Hopefully it keeps healing. She is good about the cone though. At first, she went nuts, but I sat with her and other than freaking over the sound of velcro ripping apart she actually helps me put it on and take it off.

Judy, thanks for getting us started.

Carolyn, nice work getting in your Sunday Morning energy yoga.

Valerie, it sounds like the ride was perfect and seeing the salmon run. I am glad that you saw so many.

Cathy, that is nice that you were able to go climb Hogback with Derrick before he graduates. I bet Hogback is bigger than what they call mountains in Oklahoma LOL. Nothing like the mountains in California and Colorado. Sounds like a good workout.

This morning I did ICE Rock’m Sock’m Kickboxing timesaver, 35 minutes and 249 calories burned. My average heart rate was 132 and maximum heart rate was 176.

Valerie, nice job with the shorter ride. How exciting to see the salmon run. That’s a nice addition to your morning.

Cathy, I’m glad that your drive was okay even though you had rain and poor visibility. It’s good that you and Derek were able to climb the mountain.

Diane Sue, great job with STS 2 Mobility 1. It takes a while to get caught up around the house after you have been sick.

Hello to Judy.

This morning I did Boss Loops Upper Body premix. Not the greatest day weatherize though it's stopped raining. For someone who has, over the last 7 years, been up here more than 2 dozen times, I really did not pack properly. LOL Heaviest thing I brought was a sweatshirt. I did go out to Presque Isle this morning and did a couple short hikes, including checking out Black Rocks which the kids jump off of in warm, calm water times. I did not go near the edge at all, and it was pretty windy and there were riptide warnings out. Mostly it was just rather chilly. Just now I went and parked at the marina and walked downtown to the Tea and Spice shop. Bought a couple soup mix packages and it better be the best soup I ever had for the price! I have more than enough kinds of tea right now and I'm not out of any spices, so that was a plus. It's a very cool place. Tonight I'm going to go pick up smoothies and go over to visit Derek, Aliah and the kitties. Hoping the wind will have died down by morning so I can walk along the bay. The wind coming off today is just too cold even though the actual temp is mid-60's.

Diane Sue good job with Mobility 1. Sometimes after an illness it takes time to work back in to a full workout routine. I hope your dog heals up fine. When I was downtown, I got to meet a golden retriever/Samoyed. That combo makes for a very puffy, fluffy golden retriever. The face was really golden which is what prompted me to ask the breed. Otherwise one would assume that it was a VERY overfed golden. LOL

Carolyn great job with CE Rock’m Sock’m Kickboxing timesaver.

Carolyn, nice work with Rock'm Sock'm Kickboxing timesaver today. Our house had a lot of days of neglect with the vacation and then the illness. I am finally getting through that and now trying to get some outside stuff done.

Cathy, I am usually wearing a jacket if it is windy and mid 60's. We are supposed to be getting some rain here in the next couple of hours. It is definitely getting dark outside. We can use the rain. Those specialty shops are always expensive. They do generally carry some nice stuff though. ENjoy your time with Derrick and Aliah.

Yesterday I did 40 minutes of Peloton rides and a 30 minute weight training circuit at the gym with Chris. This was his first workout since July 27th, the day before he went to the hospital. It’s going to take a while for him to get back to his regular routine but at least it’s a start. We may end up getting a Peloton rowing machine too as he thinks that will help him get his cardio fitness back quicker and he wants something he can do in the winter (he doesn’t like indoor cycling or using a treadmill). I’m sure I would use it too if we get one.

Carolyn-Great job with Jane Adams Gentle Yoga Morning Energy practice and ICE Rock’m Sock’m Kickboxing timesaver. I’ve been thinking about Rock’m Sock’m, I really want to do that one again soon.

Valerie-Great job with your ride. The salmon run sounds fascinating to watch.

Cathy-Great job with climbing Hogback and Boss Loops Upper Body premix. The climb sounds quite challenging.

Diane Sue-Great job with STS 2 mobility #1. It’s understandable you would be exhausted after being sick and having so much to catch up on at home.

Today I did ICE Chiseled Upper Body and Icy Core 1. My time was 55 minutes with 206 calories burned. Average heart rate was 108 and maximum heart rate was 144.

Cathy, great job with Boss Bands Upper Body. That chilly weather must be a nice change from the heat. Walking around town and going into the Tea and Spice shop would be an enjoyable thing to do for me. I love to browse places like that.

Diane Sue, nice job with CDorner Legs and Abs.

Judy, that’s great that you and Chris went to the gym. Adding a rower for another cardio option sounds good if you have space.

Hello to Valerie.

No workout or walking today. Didn't get a lot of sleep, and I wasn't dressed to walk. Ended up heading home around 9. Between the lack of sleep and very dreary day I ended up stopping at the rest area about an hour south of the bridge and taking a 20 minute nap. That helped a lot. Overall a pretty uneventful drive other than people wanting to go below the speed limit on two lane rounds and on and off drizzle. Now I'll have to really invent reasons to go up there since I won't be going again before Derek is done in December. Was nice to spend more time with Derek and Aliah last night. And now today I see that the new workouts Cathe filmed are on presale. I'll get the 3, but not until they are closing the best presale price as I have to pay for everything I just did first!

Carolyn the tea and spice shop is somewhere I could get into serious trouble if I wan't pretty careful with my budget. Great job with ICE Chiseled Upper Body and Icy Core 1.

Judy nice job with Peloton rides and a 30 minute weight training circuit. I'm sure you would both get use out of the rowing machine.

Diane Sue great job with CDorner Legs and Abs. I have a lined windbreaker that would have been just the thing I needed, and I even remember thinking I should grab it to take with me, but clearly the thought didn't stay with me long enough.

I was going to post earlier, but had problems with my computer stalling on stuff. Today I did CDorner Fat Blasting Low Impact Cardio with light weights(2#) 70'a music which was the same music from Saturday's step more of a disco era music. This was 30 minutes, 163 calories, heart rate 134/157, 2,317 steps. I then did CDorner Tone Arms and Shoulders 30 minutes, 74 calories, heart rate 90/119, 323 steps. I also started a chair mobility with Chris, but was running low on time for what I wanted to get in today. That was around 5 minutes. Total time 60 minutes, 237 calories, 2,640 steps.

Judy, nice work on the Peloton ride and weight training circuit at the gym with Chris yesterday. A rowing machine would be a nice addition.

Carolyn, nice work on Chiseled Upper Body and Icy Core 1 today.

Cathy, I hope you get caught up on some sleep. It is miserable trying to drive sleepy. I think I would be worried about safety if I stopped like that and was by myself. You are a lot braver than I would be. I just looked at the new workouts. Wondering how she managed to film more workouts with the shoulder surgery etc.. Or maybe she already had them. Her surgery may have been different than mine. I still have discomfort in my shoulder and am careful since the tendon was attached with a plastic screw. I am guessing things would heal around the screw, but not sure. I keep a light jacket in my car that stays there just in case I need it. That being said, I have went with my husband is his vehicle and wished I had a jacket in his truck.

Just finished Super Sets Total Body and that's the last total body workout in the rotation. Friday starts three weeks of Lower and Upper Body workouts.

Diane Sue great job with CDorner Fat Blasting Low Impact Cardio and CDorner Tone Arms and Shoulders. That particular rest area was fairly busy, though I parked towards the end. Plenty of people going in and out. Now the other day I saw a guy on a motorcycle, on an exit ramp on I-94 and he was just laying back eyes closed. There is no way ever, that I would do that along side a highway. And it's in a construction zone where accidents happen regularly and if a car or a semi got in trouble he'd be toast.

good morning we drove to montana on tuesday with our new car. the first hour and a half were fine but then we got a big flat tire. in a bad spot, going up to a mountain pass with heavy traffic. we got off, switched to the mini tire, and then limped on 50 miles to the next town with a tire shop. the tire( less than 200 miles on it) was toast. a nail. they didnt have a tire with similar tread so we had to buy 4 new tires. it is that way with AWD cars, the tires must have similar tread and wear, or it messes up the AWD. we tried some other ideas but could not find a suitable tire, so got 4 new ones and continued the long drive. got here after 13.5 hours. this morning I called the tire shop back. they will ship the tires back to a tire shop ( its a chain called les schwab) near our home for $10 a tire so we dont have to toss 3 perfectly good, brand new tires. we will be able to find a matching 4th tire in a bigger city. they are all weather tires so we will need them in a year or maybe less as they will fit our other subaru too.
neither of us are able to take naps or rest when driving. we drive straight with gas /bathroom stops. I see people sleeping in rest areas all the time during the day and have no clue how that could happen. it is nerve wracking even off the freeway, on a ramp, trying to get a tire changed. the noise and roar of trucks and cars is awful! how anyone could sleep thru that is mind boggling.

while I was looking up things in the new car manual about flat tires, I came across an incredibly ridiculous statement. it said that the mini spare can only be used on a rear tire flat and that if you got a flat on a front tire, you first need to switch a "good" rear tire forward and then put the mini spare on the rear. DH and I have changed a lot of flat tires! with one jack I can't figure out how that is possible. think about it! you cannot jack up the entire side of the car with that one puny little jack and swap tires around.

knees and shoulders and hips are where problems will pop up, not all on everyone, but hard to luck out and miss them all.

we are always ready with hats, gloves and an old jacket in each car plus headlamp, water, etc. never know what might pop up and it might be just comfort but might be more important. a flat tire is a good example. brand new car, a busy freeway, and who would expect this? we had good weather but in the cold and rain it would be different.
there are a bunch of electronic features we are not crazy about on this car but it looks like they must be turned off every time you start the car and cant be deleted permanently.

Judy make sure you test a rower before committing. we bought a water rower. looked great, reviews were good. neither of us got our heart rates up enough using it. it made a lot of sloshing water sounds that made it hard to watch ( listen) Tv while using it. we gave it away to a neighbor in trade for something else. it was a nice machine but didnt do what we wanted. it was the only rower we tested. I was ok with it for what I thought was a lower key workout but DH really didnt like it and it was his idea to begin with. we should have tried different kinds of rowers probably but he was sure this was what he wanted. this was during the covid business and no one had anything else to look at anyway.

This morning I did JS Stride and Step which was 32 minutes and 196 calories burned. My average heart rate was 125 and maximum heart rate was 141. I wrote a long post a little while ago and posted it on the wrong thread. I’m not even sure how that happened! I was looking at another thread and I must have started writing before coming back here. Oh wel!

I’ll just say great work everyone and have a wonderful day.

Today I did ICE Chiseled Lower Body Blast for 48 minutes and 248 calories burned. My average heart rate was 118 and maximum heart rate was 141. I took my husband for another medical appointment today just as I did yesterday. Between the two of us there is always something scheduled.

Cathy, nice job with Super Sets Total Body and finishing that part of your rotation.

Diane Sue, great job with CDorner Fat Blasting Low Impact and Toned Arms and Shoulders.

Valerie, I remember when you bought the Rower. I didn’t realize that it didn’t work out for you.

Hello to Judy.

Did a hike today to a nice lake in yellowstone. nice weather. mid 60s sunny. park is still very busy. it does NOT get quiet after school starts. went with our neighbor, 5-6 miles RT. not too hard but not flat either. about 4.5 hours but we took a long break for lunch at the lake. yesterday i did x train core and my therapy work plus curls, dips, pushups and tricep pushups. so far have not figured out what caused the shoulder discomfort or else it just got better.

Sometimes it seems like your life is increasingly ruled by medical dental checks and procedures. hard to make it focused and efficient and not scattered all over the calendar.

Carolyn, we liked the idea rower was a different position and a different way to work muscles than most other activities. somehow the mechanics of a water rower limited the speed and there is obviously no incline. I thought it was OK, not as much exertion as expected. people who row look to be in great shape so maybe other machines work differently than this one did, or you have to spend hours on it. we traded it with a neighbor who probably doesn't use it much for some road work.

Tuesday, I worked 6 hours and got a lot of steps in. I did a short core workout in the evening. Yesterday I did a 20 minute Peloton ride and STS 2.0 Mat Yoga. Today we went back to the Peloton showroom and ordered the rowing machine. It’s going to be delivered the last week of September.

Carolyn-Great job with ICE Chiseled Upper Body and Icy Core 1, JS Stride and Step and ICE Chiseled Lower Body Blast. I really didn’t think we would have enough room for more exercise equipment but it wasn’t as hard as I expected to make room. We have a lot of appointments coming up over the next couple of months too.

Cathy-Great job with Super Sets Total Body. It’s rough going on little sleep. Chris and I were just talking about taking a trip up north next summer. It really sounds like a beautiful place to visit.

Diane Sue-Great job with the CDorner workouts. We are looking forward to getting the rowing machine.

Valerie-Nice job with the hike, xtrain core, therapy and upper body work. Thanks for the tip on the water rower. I had a feeling we wouldn’t like one of those. We tried out the Peloton rower twice in the showroom. It’s very quiet and smooth. They have rowing classes, similar to the bike classes. The best part is that we don’t need to pay for 2 monthly memberships. It will just be added to the membership that I already have with the bike. Chris will be set up as a new user on the account so he will be able to keep his workout data separate.

No workout today as I shopped. Appears our sump pump motor is on its way to being toast. Currently unplugged which also means we can't run the water softener which empties into it. There is a very long plastic tube/pipe that runs out into our natural area, so it's likely a combo of the pump loosing its oomph and the pipe getting clogged up. The neighbor guy can do it, but not till at least Sunday. So probably Saturday when DH isn't working we'll go out and take the cap off the end of the pipe and see if it's clogged up. Being buried and plastic something could also have grown through it, which would be really bad since it's buried.

I don't normally nap, and in reality I was just aiming to doze. I set my timer for 20 minutes and might have fallen asleep the last few. The rest areas I stop at all have minimal traffic at one time and are actually pretty quiet and a number of them are set back off the highway a bit. Plus it's Northern Michigan so unless it's a holiday the highway isn't that busy. The Welcome Center at Clare is the exception sitting in the middle and is accessible both NB and SB. In reality, the majority of the time I travel there are rest areas I stop at where I may be the only person there, or at best there are a couple other cars. Just depends on when you go. One of the reasons I prefer to travel on weekdays.

Valerie, what a lousy thing to have happen not just when traveling, but so soon after getting the car. That's good that you can get the tires sent back. I had that happen to a tire when my car was about a year. At that time, I did just get one tire, but then when I needed new tires, I got all four and now have the one that was newer sitting in my garage just in case. Sounds like a very nice hike you did. Does the area have a lot of tourism for fall color. Northern Michigan tourism is huge in the fall. Probably about 2 weeks from color really taking hold in the western upper peninsula and then it will move east and down. Great job with the PT, core and upper body work.

Carolyn nice job with JS Stride and Step and ICE Chiseled Lower Body Blast.

Judy great job with core, Peloton ride and Mat Yoga. You really should try to get up north. So, many gorgeous areas and lots of places to hike.

I guess I forgot to post my workout yesterday. I did CDorner Tabata Style Cardio Kickbox, 38 minutes, 173 calories, heart rate 120/155, 1,553 steps. Steps did not seem right, but I guess there was thrusters and down to lunges which is not steps. I followed this with the CDorner Stretch with a chair and meditation. I did 22 minutes and stopped as the meditation is probably 15 minutes of lying on the floor with feet on the chair. Otherwise, the mobility standing and stretch part was good. This was 33 calories. Total time 60 minutes 206 calories. Today I did not do a workout. I got up early to take my granddaughter to her high school for a robotic team thing and then back to pick her up. I ended up taking a nap. Just was not feeling energetic today. Came home and had to look up codes on my car. The tire pressure light came on after I drove over a huge speed bump at the high school. Then the change oil code came on and I still do not know why the fuel pump shows. It says it comes on upon starting the car or if it is low. I stayed on driving back home. Maybe it didn't like the speed bump.

Cathy, no, stopping on the side of the highway is not safe. I have known police officers that were hit or almost hit by drivers that are not paying attention. Maybe there was something wrong with the motorcycle rider. Nice work yesterday on Supersets Total Body. I hope you can get the sump pump fixed on your own. Those kinds of things are so frustrating. When I used to have to travel to Oklahoma City for family and appointments, I always came weekdays and left on a weekday. and early in the day. There was not near the traffic other than trucks hauling from state to state.

Carolyn, good job on JS step and stride yesterday and today's Ice Chiseled Lower Body. It seems that there are a lot of appointments lately around my house too.

Valerie, that is an awful way take your first trip in the new vehicle and have to deal with a flat tire. We have had to replace all 4 tires due to one flat tire. That gets expensive. It is nice you were able to have the others shipped for later use. Nice sounding day of hiking today.

Judy, nice work getting in core Tuesday after all of the steps at work and yesterday's Peloton ride and STS 2 Mat yoga. I bet you are looking forward to getting the rower and having another piece of workout equipment.
