Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 8/27/2023

This morning I did my yoga/mobility workout for 18 minutes. Time just seemed to get away from me yesterday. I went to the Farmer’s Market early because of the extreme heat then I was home and inside for the rest of the day. I did a few things around the house. We are still having temperatures in the high 90’s with triple digit heat indices.

Valerie, I’m sure that the constant ache is very frustrating and you don’t want to make anything worse. It’s good that you can still ride.

Cathy, great job with Boxing HiiT Express and Mobility 1.

Hello to Judy and Diane Sue. Have a wonderful day everyone.

Didn't do much today, therapy work, a run to costco. air is unpleasant hot and smoky . not good to exercise in, glad we cancelled riding this morning. I am so tired of feeling like crap. I get achy and fatigued so easily and having major issues sleeping too. not sure if it's related because it doesnt hurt while Im sleeping but I still cant sleep. I'm supposed to hear from dr #2 office about a follow up appt, but thinking strongly about calling the doc #1 office and scheduling the procedure. he is my choice unless something changes abruptly, and has been all along but I didnt want to make a snap decision. Im sorry for whining so much but Ive never dealt with anything like this before and I dont know what else to do. tomorrow the air should be cleared out and maybe even a bit of rain though mostly rain should be tuesday.

This morning I did STS 2 Supersets. A lot was conspiring against it getting done, and before starting I dithered about doing it all or just one or two rounds, but I did the whole thing with no extra pauses. Still about 40,000 people with no power in the region. We're starting 5 days of nice temps and then back up into the 80's to start September.

Valerie it's great that you were able to get a ride in. Should have my brother ship you some beans. He misread the height of the ones he bought and has asked if any of us want a bushel. He actually just has a small, well laid out raised garden. Usually plenty for the two of them. Don't worry about complaining about your issues. I would be just the same as I hate not feeling well.

Carolyn good on you keeping up the yoga. Sorry you are still dealing with the heat.

This morning I did LIS Cardio Supersets, rounds 1-4. That was 26 minutes and 141 calories burned. Average heart rate 121 and maximum heart rate 155. Then I did STS 2.0 Mat Yoga which was an additional 22 minutes.

Valerie, you are trying to make a very important decision. Talking through the options and considerations can be helpful and I don’t consider that whining.

Cathy, nice job with STS 2.0 Total Body Super Sets. Michigan was really hit hard by the storm.

Hello to Judy and Diane Sue.

thanks for listening. unless something unexpected happens........ this will be a 3 level fusion so not " a nothing burger" procedure. sounds like the process is similar for one, two or three levels. fusing/connecting the 3 errant vertebrae. bones are solid so that is good news. so yes, its a very important step but I can't not do something. this is not a level where it is possible to ignore.

we rode again this morning. regular trail. 15 miles, about an hour and fifteen as usual. it actually helps my sxs but nothing much else does.

cathy we usually have bean overload in august but we've had trouble with some kinds germinating at all. not sure why but nothing we did. if you plant 3 rows of different kinds of beans at the same time and 2 come up fine and the 3rd doesn't, it's probably the seeds. we usually plant more than one kind for that reason. we have enough beans but not overproduction like the tomatoes. OMG we have tomatoes. we ate all the broccoli. we have a reasonable amount of zucchini. DH loves Zucchini bread even though it's not really bread but chocolate cake. I have a small bite of it rarely because its very good, but its cake! my activity level is less than it was so I need to be cautious.

Valerie, that’s funny about the zucchini bread! I made banana bread a few days ago, but these quick breads definitely are not bread! I put my recipe in the WW app years ago, so I do know how to count it. I roast zucchini often with onions and red bell peppers. We love roasted zucchini. Do you make sauce with some of your tomatoes?

Yesterday I did a 30 minute Peloton Ride and 10 minutes of arm work after working a 6 hour shift at HD.
Today I ran 3 miles and did 45 minutes of yoga and PT work. It was so nice to be outside today. Sunny and in the 70’s. I hope it stays this way for a while.

Carolyn-Great job with your yoga/mobility workout and LIS Cardio Supersets, rounds 1-4. I’m sorry about the heat.

Valerie-I’m so sorry about how bad you have been feeling. Nice job getting a ride in today.

Cathy-Great job with STS Supersets. I’m going to get outside as much as I can this week. I love this weather.

Hi to Diane Sue

Today I did Step Box Bonus Abs 2 and Lying Stretch and then I went and walked at the zoo. Derek started classes today and Nick a week ago, which means fall is not far away. it's my second favorite season, but only the nice fall days. We always hit a rainy, windy, take the pretty leaves off the trees before we can enjoy them time. LOL My nephew and his girlfriend have gone to stay at my sisters place in FL, they're in NC, because their apartment building is not in a good place for the coming hurricane. There are still people here without power 4 days later. I just went and looked at Lansing's outages out of curiousity. They are scattered but affect a few thousand people and looking like it'll still be another day or two at least for some.

Carolyn great job with LIS Cardio Supersets, and Mat Yoga.

Valerie I'm glad that you were able to ride this morning since it helps you. Do you ever can anything? I definitely consider things like banana/zucchini bread to me more like dessert than bread.

Judy great job with 30 minute Peloton Ride, arm work, a run and PT. That's good that you were able to get out and run. Definitely the week for doing things outside.

ha ha that's what DH days, but it's good for me, it has "vegetables" in it, "its bread!" Not bread! it's chocolate cake. I did some of the breads and they were all at least 10 points per slice. some way more. .... basically cake.

I used to make tomato sauce with my tomatoes or froze them and used them in cooking. I don't anymore. I cook a lot already and can't make anything better than the tomato sauce I buy. it's in a two or 3 pack at costco, cheaper than I could make, just as good, plus it's in shelf stable jars. I don't use tomato sauce as often as I used to so its the better choice to buy it. .
Cathy no I don't can anything. we use things fresh or they get composted. I occasionally freeze something but not a lot. we pick what we want at peak and eat it. a lot stays on the plants. we eat a lot of each thing when its ripe. we will have corn every day until its gone because our corn is wonderful and I dont like commercial corn at all. we share some things with neighbors but not everyone cooks much these days and a lot of people don't eat many vegies. its weird finding out that seemingly healthy adults seem to live on pizza and carry out and dont eat fruit and vegies. our compost pile is right there next to the garden. unpicked things go from the garden to the compost, and then back into the garden as fertilizer in spring.

our utility puts out an outage map when there are power outs with areas and numbers for how many homes are affected. maps are detailed so you can see exactly where outages are. there are some isolated pockets of homes that always get serviced last. hope they invested in generators. we bought a small one last year and it does prevention beautifully............. haven't had a power out of any length since we bought it.

Today was STS 2 Tri Sets Total Body. Of all the workouts in STS 2 that's the one that kicks by butt the hardest. I did it all, though I did drop to 6 reps on a bicep exercise and then after the fact realized I'd gone 3 lbs heavier than I had been for the previous one, so I think that evened out. Plus I took an extra break before the very last 3 leg exercises, because I realized there was a better way to get the amount of weight I needed by just using a dumbbell and ditching the vest. But WOW, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger right!

Today I did Standing Abs Metabolic Core Warm Up and followed that with Mobility 1. I didn’t feel like working out this morning and opted for something light. My son-in-law is a professor at UNC and had been near the area where the faculty member was murdered shortly before the shooting occurred. Needless to say, he is very shaken to lose a colleague that way.

Judy, nice job with the Peloton ride and arm work. Being able to run outside is a nice bonus.

Cathy, great job with Abs, lying stretch, walking at the zoo, and STS 2 Trisets Total Body. I hope that your nephew does okay in Florida during the hurricane.

Hello to Valerie and Diane Sue.

Today I did Raw Upper Body and Abs, 41 minutes (I added on a bit) heart rate 92/131, 99 calories. I also did CDorner Stretch for Lower Back Pain relief and tight hips, 44 minutes, 59 calories. Total time was 85 minutes, 158 calories. I really needed the stretch. We took the Heartland Flyer Train to Fort Worth and stayed in a really nice hotel. We walked around quite a bit and just relaxed. We got back last night. I had never been on a train other than Disneyland so my husband did that for my birthday. I ate so much unhealthy food! Got home and I still way 105. I was so stuffed after we walked to Cheesecake Factory. It was 107 in Fort Worth. Too hot to walk a lot. We went out early for brunch and then in the evenings.
My grandson just bought my dog home. She is worn out again, I think. She wouldn't go outside with me to water plants, she just peaked out the doggie door at me. She usually comes flying out the door.

Cathy, STS 2 Tri-sets was the toughest on me. I don't know if it was because I pushed to hard or what, but afterward I hurt all over. I haven't wanted to go back and do it again.

Valerie, I think fresh tomatoes have there place. I have a soup that I love, but last time I made it I forgot to buy the tomatoes on the vines that I usually do to dice up. I used canned diced tomatoes, and it did not taste the same to me at all. Also, it calls for tortillas which half are put through the blender with part of the vegetables. I always used Food For Life corn tortillas and half what was called for. I got the standard from the grocery store and no nice corn taste to them. I do not know what they did to the mission tortillas to make them soft, but they do not taste or cook the same. I really did not want to eat the soup after I tasted it. Canning is a lot of work.

Judy, nice work on the Peloton Ride and arms and the 3 mile run and yoga yesterday.

Carolyn, nice choice for more of a relaxed day with Standing Abs Metaboilc Warm up and Mobility 1. I enjoyed the nice long stretch I did today. I was having issues with my right thigh for some reason and walking when we were in Fort Worth. I don't know why it started hurting. Maybe the bed. I have never had that before. Felt good after the stretch today. We did do a lot of sitting with the train and at the hotel. Not as active as I usually am.

called surgeon's office today and said its a "go" for me so scheduling process has started. probably about 6 weeks. starting to study up on utube for techniques to protect my back after surgery.

did 20 on the spin bike, therapy work, and continuing to do bicep curls and tricep work. not sure what exercise bothered my shoulders so I'm adding in one move at a time. nothing hurt when doing them so no clue.
finally got some rain later today and still wet this morning.

wed morning.... Remember last year when I got the video of swifts flying down into our chimney? well, they're back! they nested here earlier in the season, then departed for other places. I saw them this morning flying over our yard. I will get out there at dusk today to see if they are roosting in our chimney. not sure how many there are. not thousands, but enough. there is an old chimney in a school 30-40 miles away that is famous for attracting thousands of birds but they havent arrived there yet either. so cool to see them. last year was an accident to see them, I didn't know I should have been looking. last year I saw them on sept 1,2 so I started looking a week ago since I don't know their 'schedule". I have since read that the birds intentionally poop before roosting since they lie overlapping on the inside of the chimney like shingles. rude to poop on your roosting partners head.

Carolyn hope you are not in the hurricane path.

I decided to make this an active recovery week. This morning I did Ellen Barrett’s Peace, Love, and Cardio, a fusion of dance, pilates, and walking. That was 30 minutes and 139 calories burned. My average heart rate was 117 and maximum heart rate was 148.

We are not in the hurricane’s path. It is expected to hit South Georgia this afternoon in the Savannah area, moving through middle and east Georgia. We have some periodic light rain now and it will be windy with heavier rain later.

Diane Sue, great job with Raw Upper Body and Abs and CDorner stretch. I’m glad that you had a nice birthday trip. I‘ve never traveled by train either.

Valerie, good job with the spin bike, therapy exercises, and biceps and triceps. That’s great that your therapy schedule in in process.

Hello to Cathy and Judy.

After a few bad nights, I was in bed and asleep before 9, woke up before 5:30, so I did P30 Low Impact Hiit and STS 2 Active Recovery early. Very cool here today, and wearing a sweatshirt when I walk, though I've got shorts on. We did finally hit 70. But, warming up to 90 for a few days starting Sunday.

Valerie that's so cool that the swifts are back. It sounds like you are preparing as much as you can for your surgery. Should definitely help in your recovery. Great job with the spin bike, therapy work, and continuing to do bicep curls and tricep work.

Carolyn nice job with Standing Abs Metabolic Core Warm Up, Mobility 1, and Ellen Barrett’s Peace, Love, and Cardio. I'm very sorry that your son-in-law was near the shooting and is having to deal with the after affects of the trauma. Glad you are not being impact much by the hurricane. My sister's area in FL was south of the worst, rain and a little flooding. They were originally in the path to get worse before it changed direction.

Diane Sue great job with Raw Upper Body and Abs, and CDorner Stretch for Lower Back Pain relief and tight hips. I'm glad you had a good birthday trip. It IS and will continue to be hot in Fort Worth. Nick mostly goes from air conditioned building to air conditioned car, but now that he's moved to the house he's sharing and is right by TCU, I think he walks over to workout and climb. He bought himself an annual alumni gym membership. Rather ironic that he lives within a block of TCU now, when the whole time he went there he lived a mile away. RE: Tri Sets. I think for me a lot of it is the pace of the workout with 6 exercises between breaks. For the most part equipment changes between them aren't an issue because the two minute break is plenty of set up time, but going as heavy as I can at the pace is killer.

No workout. I am sick. My husband first on the way home, then last night it hit me too. I have been sleeping a lot.

catching up today. we had some rain the last few days which was so needed here. we rode yesterday afternoon our usual ride 15 miles 75 minutes.
carolyn I forgot to comment .... that is so sad about the shooting. its so common now that no one even raises an eyebrow about it. we joke about the "lunchtime" and "dinner time" shootings in our area. frustrating that we are paralyzed doing anything to get it under control. even if measures were taken immediately, there are so many people armed and eager to take out their frustrations that it will take forever to get any control of it, if that is even possible anymore. I wont get political but but its not hard to fix blame for this.
diane sue sorry you ( and DH) are sick. seems to go with travel these days no matter how careful you are. my DH got very sick after our last plane trip. transportation is a hotbed of viruses. take care and get rest.

Cathy that's how my cousin and his wife live. they move from air conditioned space to air conditioned space, with hardly a breath of outside air. they are in phoenix. gotta make the best of a bad climate. they want to move after a couple years there but need to sell their condo.

yesterday our ride went south at the very end. DH got another flat tire. my surgery scheduling has hit a snag that will require another appt with the surgeon first. that messes up a lot of other appts we had scheduled. he hung my bike on the garage rack and knocked off my rear view mirror. we are trying to squeeze in a short MT trip because after surgery I wont be able to travel for a while and this messed that up too. never heard back from potential surgeon #2 so I have to contact them again. a frustrating day.

Tuesday I worked 6 hours at HD and I counted that as my workout as it was very busy and I definitely got a lot of exercise in. Yesterday I did 45 minutes of Peloton strength & core work. Today I ran-walked about an hour. It was another beautiful day to be outside. I work the next 3 days but have over a week off after that.

Cathy-Great job with Step Box Bonus Abs 2 and Lying Stretch, STS 2 Tri Sets Total Body and P30 Low Impact Hiit and STS 2 Active Recovery. I’ve only done Tri Sets once but I also thought it was the hardest of the STS 2 total body workouts. The weather is very nice this week.

Valerie-I’m sorry that your schedule is getting messed up. That does sound like a frustrating day. I hope it works for you to take your MT trip.

Carolyn-Great job with Standing Abs Metabolic Core Warm Up, Mobility 1 and Ellen Barrett’s Peace, Love, and Cardio. It’s good to have active recovery weeks. I plan on taking one soon.

Diane Sue-I am so sorry that you and your husband are sick. I hope you both feel better soon.

Today I didn’t work out at all. We had a service technician scheduled for 9:00 and I didn’t have enough time. Of course he arrived later than scheduled.

Cathy, great job with P30 Low Impact HiiT and Active Recovery. I’m glad that you had a good nights sleep.

Diane Sue, I’m sorry that you and your husband are sick. Hopefully you both will feel better soon.

Valerie, it’s too bad that the scheduling isn’t going as smoothly as hoped.

Judy, great job with Peloton strength and core, and the 1 hour walk/run. HD must be very busy now. It’s hard to believe that Labor Day is here already.

Have a good day everyone.
