Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 8/13/2023

Just finished STS 2 Body Parts Legs with the bonus and Step Boss Lying Stretch. I started to type out the STS 2/Xtrain rotation yesterday but realized that there were things about it I really didn't like, so I've decided to go with the STS 2 10 week rotation and just tweaked the body parts workouts to the premixes that combine to complete body parts. The rotation uses the mish moshes and those just seemed to short for what I want, of course it does leave me with hour+ workouts, but I'll manage. I will have to work around at least one trip up to Marquette and possibly two. I'm planning to start September 1, which gives me a few days between rotations and allows me to start the week on Fridays, so my rest day falls on my shopping day.

Judy the biggest thing I've found doing the STS 2 rotation, with my life at the moment was a lack of cardio and core. Some weeks I'm not even getting two cardio in. At least some of the workouts get my heart rate up. I've tried to work more into the 10 week rotation. Derek will be back at college then, so I won't have as much to work around and hopefully won't have to adjust the rotation as much. Great job with the 30 minute Peloton ride and strength workout.

Diane Sue nice job with CDorner Fat Blasting Rock Your Cardio Hight or Low Impact and Mobility 1.

Carolyn I'm sure you enjoyed the time with your daughter. I hope she has safe travels home.

Valerie I hope you figure out how to move forward with your surgery. There is never a good time for a long recovery, but if you have to have a long break from working out it's probably better to do it in winter.

Today I did my weekly yoga for 18 minutes. My daughter went with her best friend squad to the Beyoncé concert last night and is flying home this evening. I had no idea that theme clothing was such a big part of the concert scene these days.

Cathy, great job with Body Parts Legs and Step Boss Lying stretch. I had the same dilemma in trying to decide on what rotation I wanted to do. Last week was a variation of the XTrain rotation, but I don’t want to follow it as written.

Judy, I agree with Cathy about STS 2 rotation. I saw definite strength gains, but now I need more cardio in my weekly schedule.

Hello to Valerie and Diane Sue.

Cathy-Great job with STS 2 Body Parts Legs with the bonus and Step Boss Lying Stretch. The 10 week STS 2 rotation looks good too. Lack of cardio will definitely be a challenge for me. My natural tendency was always to do mostly cardio with a little bit of strength added on. That is probably the opposite of what I need now, at 60. It's also hard for me to stay with one rotation so I'm going to have to focus on STS 2 and not get distracted by other workouts.

Carolyn-Great job with your weekly yoga. I would love to see some strength gains from STS 2 and hopefully that will motivate me to stay with it for 3 months. Doing less cardio will be hard.

Hi to Valerie & Diane Sue

we did our longer road ride this morning in farm country. didn't start out well. I just got on my bike and started to pedal and a toe basket broke and I crashed. my foot slid off the pedal I think. had not really started to move much but I still got dinged up since it starts on rough gravel in the parking area. went on and rode the 25 miles anyway. I'm used to toe baskets. it felt funny to be missing one but I keep them very loose so my feet don't get caught in them. the baskets swing to the downside of the pedal, so I spin the pedal to get my foot into the basket. right about then it snapped off. felt really stupid but I got some bruises and a couple scratches. not many people use toe baskets in recent years. REI doesnt even carry anything like that. most use clip ins but I failed those. my ankles are way too flexible to be stable at all.

Cathe they have assured me that I will be walking (almost) right away. like day 2 depending on how the procedure goes and what time I'm done. I have a treadmill, elliptical and a spin bike. I'm quite sure all will be ok to use. an indoor spin bike isn't anything you can fall off of. its a stationary bike with a decent seat not one of those horrendous bowl seats I detest. I can adjust the seat to any height and reduce tension and be as upright as needed.. I wont be sitting around for 3 months like the one surgeon seemed to think. I ruled him out.

came across an article about dead birds, usually raptors, at the base of power/telephone poles. interestingly 2/3 of the dead birds were NOT electrocuted like many think, they were shot. their bodies contained bullets or shot gun pellets. first thing I thought was, how many fires get started by some jerk shooting a bird off a pole and at the same time the wires/transformers get hit by bullets or shot gun pellets? a clear reason for fallen wires or sparks that ignite fires. California PG&E is bankrupt because of all the suits against them for faulty equipment. not saying they arent guilty in some cases, but 67% is a lot of shot dead birds, usually hawks. all those unexplained fires! It was in the NYT within the last week. I cant post a link. google if interested.

Electrocution Isn’t the Main Thing Killing Birds Along Power Lines

A survey of power lines in four Western states found bullet fragments and shotgun pellets in most of the dead birds that were collected. author is Carol Wilke.

This morning I did STS 2 Body Parts Shoulders and then went and walked at the zoo. I looked back at my calendar and the last cardio workout I did was 12 days ago! Really need to figure out how to get at least two in a week. I know I need the weights more, but I've always done at least 50-50 cardio/weights so it's just weird and the body parts except for legs don't get the heart rate up like the total body workouts do.

Valerie sorry to hear you fell. Ouch I hope you aren't too sore today. Excellent that you were able to go ahead and do the ride. That's great that you'll be able to do a variety of cardio exercise and I agree about the doctor who thought you should just sit around. If it's not really necessary, it's the worst thing you could do for your overall health. That's fascinating about the percentage of birds killed by guns and scary. There are pretty severe fines and jail time for people found guilty of doing it, but it's hard to catch them and the birds are easy to shoot due to their size and the fact they wouldn't have any fear sitting high up.

Carolyn nice job with the yoga. Concerts these days are rather crazy. I went to one actual concert, Styx around 81-82, and it really didn't do much for me. I'll just stick to listening in the comfort of my home/car etc. It's cool to see the bands from the 70's-80's out touring, more power to them at their ages, but I've no desire to go see even my favorite artists.

Hi to Judy and Diane Sue.

This morning I did Rev’d Up Rumble which was 41 minutes and 282 calories burned. My average heart rate was 130 and maximum heart rate was 162.

Judy, it’s hard to fit in cardio with the STS 2.0 rotations unless you choose one of the hybrid rotations. I think that it was good for me to just focus on strength for a bit. I plan to do it again soon.

Valerie, I’m glad that you didn’t seriously injure yourself when you crashed on your ride. There are many exercise options for you after your surgery and I know that you will manage to get something done.

Cathy, nice job with Body Parts Shoulders and walking at the zoo. We went to a Temptations concert years ago which was a lot of fun. We’ve also did a series of concerts in a park here where you picnic and socialize during the music. Some people had catered tables with white tablecloths and others just picnic baskets. It was fun to do, but nothing like these concerts today.

Hello to Diane Sue.

Today I did STS 2 Metabolic Core Warm Up+ mini ball abs mix, 24 minutes, 79 calories. I then did STS 2 Mobility 2, 18 minutes, 32 calories. 42 minutes total and 97 calories. I have my grandson here so had not planned on doing any workout. This helped loosen things up after a day of mostly sitting. I think I will wait till Wednesday to do a strength workout.

Valerie, I would avoid the doctor that thinks you should sit around. That is good that you would be up and walking quickly. I have heard many that after surgeries they wanted them up and moving. That is interesting about the birds.

Judy, I am really wanting to build up muscle and it has not been quite as hard as I thought that it would be to no make sure I do some cardio most days along with the weights. I have seen some gains with STS 2.

Carolyn, Nice work on Rev'd up and Rumble.

Cathy, my heart rate hardly gets up at all with the body parts. But then there is supposed to be after burn after the workout. It seems like my lower heart rate has not affected how many calories I burn though.
As far as concerts my husband and I have always avoided things like that where there are crowds. We did see some performers in Las Vegas though.

neither of us have gone to concerts since our teens. don't like noise and crowds. or the music. even movies are tough because the volume is so high. seems silly to wear earplugs in a movie theater but I have to. went to a couple movies where we thought the big screen and special effects would make it worth while. so incredibly loud we wont go back. deafening, headache inducing no matter where you sit. also the half hour + of trailers and ads before the move even starts. ugh. I expect theaters to be louder than at home but this is beyond that.
Carolyn there is a winery near here that has outdoor concerts like you mention that sound pleasant.

Cathy it is unlikely to catch people shooting birds off power poles very often. the survey was several western states where there are many wildfires of unknown cause. power companies often get blamed. they aren't blameless but 67% is a high number. almost all traffic signs have multiple bullet holes too. makes one wonder!

I'm fine after my crash. a couple bruises and scratches where the chain ring got me. if the strap had to break, this was a good time to happen. if I had been riding it may have been worse. this never happened before. as I was taking the first wheel rotation around, my foot broke thru the strap and tipped me off balance. ordered new pedals since that's how to fix it.

yesterday friends invited us on a boat trip. took all day and was quite a long trip. alternatively hot and freezing cold with the wind chill on the water. sunny and hot overall. toured around the san juan islands which have become a huge high end tourist destination for people with incredible multimillion dollar yachts. Wow. more money invested in white fiberglass than I ever imagined. not my thing. the better part of the day we checked out wildlife. lots of seabirds, otters, fish but no whales. they have a nice boat but very open to wind so we were exhausted from sun, wind, vibration and engine noise by end of the day. we are not big water fans but it was nice for a day and very kind of them to include us.

the doctor I saw once wanted a very extensive surgical fix. would have left me incapacitated for months. nope, wont do that! cant make me 20 again no matter what. other docs suggesting a lesser procedure. one leg is shorter than the other. not fixable.

Today I decided to do STS 2 Body Parts Biceps no repeats, 33 minutes, 94 calories, heart rate 100/133. This only eliminates 4 sets. I am still waiting for a call back from the pulmonologist to set an appointment for the test. Maybe it is because
the doctor was supposed to be gone.

Valerie, I understand about age being a determining factor on medical procedures. My husband and I hardly ever go to a theater. We have went once in quite a lot of years. We just rent or purchase and watch at home. It is more comfortable at home. There is some strange people out there. I never could figure out what pleasure they get out of shooting signs or painting them. I don't see a lot around here, but I have seen them. I am glad you had a nice time with friends.

This morning I did Strong and Sweaty Total Body Giant Set, no round 5 timesaver. My time was 51 minutes and 220 calories burned, average heart rate 116, and maximum heart rate 150.

Diane Sue, great job with Metabolic Core Warm Up+mini ball abs, Mobility 2, and Body Parts Biceps. I’m sure that you enjoyed having your grandson.

Valerie, boating with your friends sounds like a wonderful day.

Hello to Cathy and Judy.

Sunday, I did Live #318, Iron Legs. I matched Cathe’s weights and am still feeling it. Yesterday I went for a short walk with Chris and did Live # 234, Strong Express Upper Body. Today I did a 45 minute Peloton ride and STS 2 Chair Yoga. I’m mentally preparing myself for STS 2 and started to get motivated.

Valerie-I’m sorry that you fell. I agree with Diane Sue, I would definitely avoid the doctor that wants you to just sit around for months. Spending the day boating with your friends sounds like fun.

Cathy-Great job with STS 2 Body Parts Shoulders and your walk. I have a hard time not doing cardio at least every other day, but the lower body and total body workouts do have a cardio effect so that will help a little. I might be able to get by with one 45 minute Peloton ride a week.

Carolyn-Great job with Rev’d Up Rumble and Strong and Sweaty Total Body Giant Sets timesaver. I think it will be good for me to focus on strength for a while too.

Diane Sue-Great job with STS 2 Metabolic Core Warm Up+ mini ball abs mix, Mobility 2, and STS 2 Body Parts Biceps no repeats. I really want to build up some muscle too and it sounds like STS 2 is working well for everyone.

Just realized I never posted yesterday, I was so messed up yesterday from lack of sleep, plus DH had a site meeting in the morning, was home for 10 minutes then off to a dentist appointment, Derek worked at an odd time of day. Totally kept forgetting what day it was. LOL I did do Body Parts Back though, and I managed a couple cleaning projects, especially under and behind the computer area as DH is there too much when he's working and our computer is also there, so weekends there's often someone there. Actually slept good last night, and just did Body Parts Chest with the bonus. If I'm up early enough tomorrow, I'll do a cardio workout.

Judy fantastic that you were able to match Cathe's weights on Live #318, Iron Legs, and great job with Strong Express Upper Body, Peloton ride and chair yoga.

Carolyn nice job with Strong and Sweaty Total Body Giant Set.

Diane Sue great job with STS 2 Body Parts Biceps no repeats. I hope you get the call soon so you can set up the appointment.

Valerie I'm glad you weren't too banged up from your fall. I think I've only been in a theater once since we had Nick and that was when I took the boys to see Marley. No desire to go. Everything ends up on video and now streaming eventually. While I certainly wouldn't mind seeing the wildlife, pleasure boating isn't my thing either. Just like spending a day at a beach. So boring. Boys and I went a couple times with my sister when we were in Florida and they were fine because of the novelty, but I was bored after half an hour.

I agree 100%. beach vacations are so boring. I am pasty white to begin with. florida/ hawaii sun exposure is maybe 15 minutes. dont like being hot. sitting by a pool is no better. I used to tan a little for some color but a very short process. even soaked in sunscreen it is uncomfortable and boring. too bright to read and I sure cant sleep. would rather do ANYTHING else. learned quickly that tropical destinations are not for me.
we are running into issues with streaming lately . we get Utube TV, netflix, prime, hulu. seems like a lot of choices. worked pretty well except for their watch lists. if you watch a series and mark it thinking it will be easy to find tomorrow night, it wont show up at all. they hide it so you have to look thru everything to find it. movies you have watched and mark as such, will go back on lists as things you havent seen. DH is finally learning that its usually 100|% wrong which cant be accidental. we'd pay anything to avoid commercials. I will skip watching entirely if it comes with commercials. not happening.
we have not seen a decent current movie in a long time. what used to show up streaming in a plus/minus a year, like movies that didnt do big box office or get awards, used to show up. not happening anymore. maybe due to the writers strike? we watched several movies lately that were totally awful but recent movies with well known people. reviews were good but wrong. people apparently watch almost anything and give it 4 stars. Blech. even decent older movies are hard to find. Im thinking of going to the library and seeing what I can rent on DVD. dish is not an option here.

did stacked upper body yesterday with just one run thru the exercises. my arm issue of a week ago seems to have resolved but need to be sure its ok again.

This morning I did JS 30 Minute Fat Blaster for 30 minutes, 195 calories burned, average heart rate 129 and maximum heart rate 157.

Judy, great job with the Live workouts, Peloton ride, and Chair Yoga.

Cathy, nice job with Body Parts Back and Body Parts Chest w/bonus. I’m glad that you slept better last night.

Valerie, nice job with Stacked Sets Upper Body. I find both Prime and Netflix to be very frustrating and confusing when looking for something to watch. We are currently watching the series Billions together and my husband has an action series that he is enjoying. I usually read about something then look for it or one of my children will recommend something that I might enjoy.

Hello to Diane Sue.

Today I did CDorner Step 30 minutes, 166 calories, heart rate 133/164, 2,745 steps. I then did STS 2 Body Parts Back no repeats, 33 minutes, 92 calories, heart rate 97/121. Total time was 63 minutes, 258 calories. I got a late start because I kept going back and forth with the pulmonologist nurse on my bronchoscopy. They seem stuck on Tuesdays. At first they had it set for when I am out of town. I told them when was best for me and they said they would give it to someone else and call in an hour. No one called so I called back. Then they said they set me up for a Tuesday a week later. I could not get that changed and now I have to figure out getting there and back. Frustrated with it as I told them my husband was off the rest of that week after we get back. Other days do not work out for the pulmonologist and usage of the facility to do it.

we are watching Black Mirror which is OK so far. each episode is a complete story and we have watched episodes, 2 were good, there are a lot of them. interesting and well done,..
started watching Painkiller last night. a limited series about the opioid crisis that is excellent. We saw Dopesick a while ago which was excellent. this is the same story told in another way by a different director. like Dopesick, very well known people are in the cast. I think both painkiller and black mirror are Netflix. not sure if dopesick was.

Carolyn I think every streaming service aims to confuse you so you can't find what you were watching without combing thru every title( at least 4x) they have available.
I kept saying "we've already seen this" when DH would bring up a title. Then he'd say, "but Netflix says we haven't seen it', and I'd say, "oh yes, we have!". they lie! my memory is WAY better than that. If I saw something, even the beginning few minutes, I remember. it's happened enough times where I'm right that he listens. he's a smart smart guy in so many ways and follows complicated plots much better than I do, but I am deadly accurate on whether we've seen something before. he wont remember it at all. I'm stupid when it comes to following complicated plots so no genius but I know what I saw.

This morning I did STS 2.0 Upper Body 2, 2 sets maximum. My time was 65 minutes with 277 calories burned. My average heart rate was 115 and maximum heart rate was 151.

Diane Sue, great job with CDorner step and Body Parts Back, no repeats. I’m sorry that scheduling with the Pulmonologist is so difficult. It’s hard to schedule medical appointments when there is only one day of the week to work with.

Valerie, Black Mirror sounds interesting. I’m not surprised that the writing is good since Jesse Armstrong, who wrote Succession, is one of the writers for Black Mirror. Succession was very well done.

Hello to Cathy and Judy.

obviously I can't speak for every part of the country but often what happens in one place has happened in other places.
Here, we have separate "scheduling offices". the people doing appts are not in or even connected to the office they schedule for, except for the sole purpose of making appts. they schedule for many docts possibly in many offices. you think you are talking to someone at the front desk at "Dr Getbetter's" office but the scheduling people are in a separate office at the other end of town and have never met the people they schedule for. it's the way things are done here. it might explain when there is a disconnect. you think you are talking to someone in the physical office you visit and maybe not even close.

Carolyn, black mirror it has a bit of a sci fi/ futuristic vibe to some of the episodes. we liked 2 of 4 and the other two weren't bad, just liked less.
we are really enjoying Painkiller. DH lived thru a lot of the things they are describing and depicting. Succession is a series I want to finish, but we haven't been able to access it. we saw several seasons but not the last one.
I'm pretty sure one of the writers on Painkiller was a writer for The Looming Tower, a series I thought was fantastic.

Valerie, you are right. I got an unexpected call this morning which I think was from the doctors office and really thought they were not going to do anything, but she said she was told I needed a different time. She asked questions and said she would pass it on to someone else an see what they could work out. I told her a Monday or Friday would be best and asked her if he usually did that on Tuesdays because both appointment times they gave me were on Tuesdays. She said generally yes. I think they are working back and forth with the facility in the hospital I would get it done at. They sent the info with a link to the map and it just took me to a parking lot, so I need more instructions than that. My luck is that they did not pay enough attention to me saying Friday the 8th my husband is not available as he is filling in at work a 12 hour shift.

Sorry, I am not getting posting in. It has been busy and so many things keep coming up that I am trying to work out.
