Good Morning!

It sure is a humid one here! ...I did an I-tread this morning and was dripping wet when done..

Garance:
I am going to get the same KB DVD you did...how is it? I got the 15 lb KB at Target. It comes with a DVD that just shows the moves, no real workout on it. I can't seem to get those "Turkish Get Ups" ! The rest seem doable. Did your DH ever get that "varmit"? I got the Essential C daily moisturizer from Ebay with a 10% off coupon I had... a real deal!

Linny:
How has work been? did you go to the lake this weekend? any boating?

LaLa:
Where do you live? We are spread out all over the country and it is fun hearing about the different weather, events, lifestyles etc

Josie:
Hope you find us here!

have a great day ladies!

first time with kettlebell

Hi Deb, Linny, Josie, Rhonda, and lala1--

Yesterday I did Christi Taylor's Dance Fit (70 min.), and this morning I did my first kettlebell workout (45 min.). When I previewed this workout, I thought it would not get my heartbeat up and couldn't understand why there were 60 second rest periods between the 2-minute intervals. Well, now I know why! Deb, my heartrate soared and I was really sweating. It's got to be the momentum of these moves, which is so qualitatively different from weight training, which is NOT supposed to use momentum. I will be interested to see how you respond to these moves and the DVD. DH was worried with all that swinging that I would end up crashing the TV or a window, but I felt pretty securely in contact with my 15-pounder, even when I had to let go of the handle and let it drop as I started my squat. I will definitely be doing this one once a week and see how my body responds. I like the novelty, I guess. If I want a longer workout, I guess I could add on the 12 minute shorter routine. I did the stretches as a warm-up and then the longer workout.

I like all the essential-C stuff, Deb. I think it's the antioxidant power of the C. I am not so enthusiastic about the Intense Wrinkle reducer for the eyes. It just doesn't want to get absorbed, even with the slightest little dab. It's going to last a long time, though, because I use so little. I will go back to the essential-C stuff for the eyes when I finish with this stuff.

Well, my office is getting packed up this week, but the big move won't be until the end of next week, so I am working at home, which feels strange.

I am so tired of the rain, which seems to come in fierce blasts of thunder and lightning, and just out of the blue after a really nice day on Saturday. I hope August is drier.

Back to Work

Hi Ladies:

Well I'm back from vacation and I think we had the crappiest weather of the season. It rain everyday:(.I'm so glad that we missed the tornado,it was 2miles of us. We went by saturday to see damage,it looked like a war zone. Houses ripped apart and trees thrown every which way. Only one person died, which was surprising looking at the damage.
Tonite is first night back to work, hopefully its better than last day there. The morning I left there,at about 5am an aide noticed water in hallway.A toilet had overflown and flooded 4 rooms.I was really concerned about patients since beds are electric. I called maintenance and had to use a wet/dry vac to clean up as quickly as possible. The morning from h*ll.
Welcome LaLa and welcome back Rhonda!
Deb:I did get to go waterskiing once during vacation,no hives.I made sure I warmed right up after.I did have a small reaction when I was picking blueberries standing in water.Good luck with the kettlebells.
Garance:Those kettlebells sound pretty intense.Be careful.I actually did Dance to be fit today(its becoming one of my favorites) and also did some Turbo Jam. My DH bought me Turbojam when he saw a info-merical.Lots of kickboxing and ab work.
Josie:Hope all is well
Well going to make dinner.Hope you ladies have a great night.

My achy body

Since I have more time in the summer, I have been trying to up my exercise by doing all of Cathe's July rotation. No changes except for runs. Shaking up one's body is painful and when the pain is going, it is time to shake up things again. Time for some advil. But I definitely overall am feeling better. The body is getting tuned.

Today I went for a routine Mammogram. How I hate the process. However the radiologist has a new digital machine which was very neat. Did not have to wait for x-rays to be developed. Hopefully no news is good news.

Summer school finishes on Friday. YEAH!

Garance: Which kettlebell workouts did you decide on? What weight kettlebells?

I want to buy the weighted vest from the new Cathe line coming out in a few weeks.

Regards,

Rhonda

Good Morning!

Well I got up earlier than usual , around 4:00, did an I-Tread and am sitting here with a fresh cup of coffee. This is my favorite time of day.

Garance:
Thanks for the info on the KB workout. I ordered it yesterday. That's what I have heard about them, that you really get a cardio workout from them along with DOMS! I want to do this maybe twice a week to start, then do regular cardio on the other days. I think the 15 lb is going to be difficult at first. I may use an 8 or 10 lb DB at first, until I get the moves down. We are getting the same type of rain storms that you mentioned. It has been the strangest summer!

Linny:
Sorry you had crappy weather on your vacation..like I said above, this has been one crappy summer! At least you didn;t get hives, which you must have been really happy about! How do you like the Turbo Jam workouts? Yuk on the toilet fiasco at work!

Rhonda:
Wow, good for you for doing the July rotation! I have never been able to do Cathe's rotations. I don;t have the stamina or the time! Sending Good Mamogram Vibes your way! I was thinking about buying the CAthe vest too, if STS EVER gets released!

Have a good day!

Deb

Hi Ladies,

I'm still here, but have not had time to post. I have been in a rut since getting back from vacation and can not get myself back to my work out routine.

I will be taking my bootcamp class tonight and see how it goes.

What is the tittle of the Kettelbell workout that you ladies are trying out?

Have to get back to work. Have a great ladies!

Josie

Kettlebell DOMS!!

Hi Deb, Josie, Linny, and Rhonda--

Man, my shoulders are really sore from that kettlebell workout yesterday! My butt's a bit sore too from all the squeezing. I did Leslie's 4 Fast Miles, music only (50 min.). I was going to do the Cardio Dance Fusion, but I didn't want to do all the arm raises in this one because of soreness.

Josie: The kettlebell workout is found at www.Ontheedgefitness.com with an instructor named Lauren. I must say, though, that I do not squat as low as she does.

Deb: I forgot yesterday--the varmint groundhog is still "taunting" DH (his word). He thinks it will wait until his tomatoes are at the peak of their ripeness and then invade and take one bite out of each. If he does, I will be picking up a gun, because I luuuuuve my homegrown tomatoes.

Rhonda: Good for you on doing Cathe's rotation! I just don't have the gumption to yield my early morning decision-making on workouts to such discipline.

Linny: So glad you escaped the evil hives! I was very lucky on my vacation at the Jersey shore. Absolutely gorgeous every day. I hate it when it rains at the shore, because really all you can do is stay inside and either read or play games.

ttfn

Wow!

Looked at the Kettlebell preview. But what weight is good to start with?

Just finished a Yoga workout. Did Kickboxing with my class this morning. I am done.

Rhonda

Happy "Humpday"!

Good Morning!

Just sitting here after getting up at 4:00 am to let the little K out and do a workout...never did get the workout done..it was so peaceful and cool and quiet that I made some coffee and ended up reading for an hour! Oh well I guess today is a rest day for me!

Josie:
Welcome back...it is sometimes hard to get back into the swing of things after a vacation, but I am betting that once you do that bootcamp workout you will be right back into it again!..I see Garance posted the line to the dvd that we bought...mine has not arrived yet.

Garance:
I was hoping you would say that you got DOMS from that workout! I know there is a huge cardio factor, but I want some muscle work to with all that heavy lifting! I agree on the form of her squats.. I always thought that going below knee level was bad for your knees...I am rooting for your DH and his hunt..

Rhonda:
I got a 15 lb KB at TArget..it may be a little heavy to start, but I thought that if I got the 10, I would need to buy another too soon so I will have to either sub with a DB for some of the excercises, or not too so many reps at first.

Linny:
I hope you were taking a nice long nap before work and that is why you did not post yesterday! :)..

Have a great day ladies!

Deb

Getting impatient

Hi Deb, Linny, Rhonda, and Josie--

This morning I did Jari Love's Get Ripped and Chiseled (62 min.). I am still a bit tender from that kettlebell workout, so I cheated a bit on the shoulders and pullovers.

First tomatoes brought in this morning. So far, so good. The groundhog seems to be staying away. DH almost had him last night at dinner. Mid-sentence, he suddenly gets up, grabs his gun and runs to the patio door. BOOM! Then the varmint runs for cover in the woodpile.

Rhonda, I bought the 15-pounder for the same reason Deb gave you. I could do all of the exercises, but I really felt them. For some reason, a 15 pound kettlebell feels heavier than a 15 pound dumbbell.

I am getting very impatient about STS. Went over to that forum today, and I guess I am not alone. Someone said, though, that it may be months before these are finished. I'm beginning to think Francis Ford Coppola is directing, John Williams is doing the music, and Kurosawa is doing the editing. Sheesh! What does Cathe want--an Oscar??

Also impatient about getting into my new office. Went to look at it yesterday, and it feels a bit weird--too corporate or something. A lot of glass and very modern furnishings--architects' choice, apparently. I will be much happier when I put up all my prints and posters, unpack my books and files, put down a colorful rug and haul in an easy chair.

Hi folks! Can I join ya? :D

I am in between my 2 Road Trips as a Coordinator and am trying to use this window of time productively as a jumping-off point for cleaner eating and, generally, being more accountable for my own lazy-a$$ tendencies. ;) So if y'all don't mind, I thought I'd leap into your check-in group (seeing as how I just turned 53!)

Here's where I am so far this week. After getting home from the July RT at 12:45 a.m. on Sunday night, I was a total slug Monday. I did nothing but hang out with my beautimous Tar Heel boys and run load after load of stinky post-Road Trip laundry. Eating was ... oh, I'd give myself a B- on clean eating, spacing out meals, calories, nutritional value, etc. I did sleep well Monday night.

Tuesday I did 4DS Kickbox from start to finish and really enjoyed it. My energy level was way up, I heavied up on weight and I concentrated very hard on good form and did well. Eating was clean -- but I'd still give myself a B, though, because the day got busy and I didn't eat enough between noon and dinnertime, so I ended up a little low on calorie and nutrient counts. I can see this is really going to be a process of adjustment for me getting all the pieces in place. Sleep last night was so-so -- I woke up a lot for some reason, as I often do. (I call it meno-sleep. GRRR!)

Today I am working on completing the final proofread on the August RT Who's Who book so that it can ship out to the printer later today. I'm just about done, and then I'll do 4DS LIS. Eating so far has been clean and healthy and adequate -- breakfast and a little mid-morning snack, and getting ready for a nice salad and grilled veggies for late lunch. Hydration's good -- all in all I'm feeling pretty peppy today. ;)

Thanks y'all!!!

Hi Ladies:
Deb:Sorry I didn't get to check yesterday. My Ds came over at dinnertime and didn't get to get my act together.Sounds like you started your day on a calm note.Good for you!I'll have to check out that kettlebell dvd.May be dangerous for me with all that swinging:rolleyes:
Garance:Thanks for posting kettlebell website.I will definitely check it out.Glad your tomatoes are groundhog free so far.I picture your DH as Elmer Fudd going after those rascally goundhogs:D. Does sound like your new office needs the "Garance Touch".Have fun decorating.
Wecome Kathy! I'm 51 and going through early menopause(fun times).
Being the road trip coordinator sounds like you're been very busy.I would have loved going to one of the road trips but didn't have the time or money. Some day hopefully I'll meet Cathe.Your meals look nice and healthy good job.
Well I got on the scale yesterday I'm at an all time high.159.5pds :I think the rainy vacation didn't help.Did lots of sitting and eating:eek:.I'm starting to feel so uncomfortable with all this extra weight.I need to kick myself in the a**,and get in gear.I lost an inch so being only 5'3" doesn't help looking any thinner.I can't wait till the STS series comes maybe it will kick start my metabolism.
Hi Josie,Rhonda and LaLa,hope you're having a great night!~Linny~

It's Thursday Lovely "Penta +'s"

Hi,

I just typed a long post here...hit post reply, and it disappeared!!

No workout today...just another day of being lazy..not sure what is up with that!

Let's Welcome Kathy and tell her a little about ourselves in our post today..:)

Kathy:
I am 55, live in NY, ( Buffalo), work for FedEx handling border Customs clearances, married 23 years, no kids but have 2 dogs ( Kelsey & Keegan, aks "The Double K's), and a parrot.

Garance:
Thanks for the info on the KB DVD..I can't wait until mine comes. I hope it gets here before Sunday so I can start the week off with it. How long is the one you are doing? Love the groundhog saga! I'm with you on the STS situation...there comes a time when "perfect" loses it's importance..and I think this has reached its time..I am sure your new office will feel much better once you get your personal stuff in there..I got the Murad Essential C Daily Moisturizer yesterday...have you ever gone to their site and looked at that nightime Resurgence regime? It looks great and I almost ordered it until I saw it was one of those "membership" things, which I refuse to get sucked into!

Kathy:
Welcome! I can imagine how exhausted you must have been after the RT and all the work you must have done! Now you are working on August?? WOW! Your eating sounds great! Maybe you can give us (me!) some tips on how to eat clean...if you list a days menu for us, it might help. I am a sugar-aholic.. Do you use the nutrition part of the new site? I can;t get the WM to work...too frustrating. I gave up. Don;t need that frustration at home when I am supposed to be doing something fun...I get enough of that at work..LOL.. Love the "meno-sleep" comment.. we are all there!

Linny:
Love the visual of Garance's DH being Elmer Fudd! I hear you on the eating situation..I am there too! Do you like the Turbo Jam workouts?

Josie, Rhonda, LaLa: Hello!

Have a great day ladies!

Deb

Have a great day!

HHH today

Hi Deb, Linny, Rhonda, Josie, Lala, and welcome Kathy--

I did Cardio Dance Fusion this morning (45 min.), and I was sweating a lot because of the hazy, hot, and humid weather here.

Kathy, I am 61, married 28 years, two sons (24 and 26), both college graduates (Bates and Gettysburg), both varsity athletes (soccer goalkeeper and track) and honors students. DH is a farmer and soccer referee in the Albany, NY area, and I am a college professor at Williams College, a Sylvia Plath scholar (2 books). Oh--and I have been doing Cathe forever it seems. I have some of her early step workouts with the big hair from the 80s and another one with her hair short and a really cheesy and phoney beach background. Cedie is in this one, and her hair is really, really Marilyn-Monroe blonde. If I remember correctly, you are a lawyer (?) and a super-organizer--which it sounds like you are doing now for the August roadtrip.

Deb, DH is lean as a rake, so Elmer Fudd doesn't really fit, but he does have his farmer ways. Yesterday he was complaining about his new jeans NOT being stiff enough for his taste. He is unhappy that they now pre-wash all of the sizing out of them. Go figure!

I'm with you Linny on the STS. I need something to shock this post-menopausal body. My weight seems pretty stable at 137, but every year I think I eat less and less. Very discouraging when I love to cook so much. Last night I made the Taiwan version of General Tso's chicken from my Fuchsia Dunlop Hunan book. Soooo good.

I watched my new Kurosawa DVD last night--High and Low. It was really impressive. A somewhat slow start, but then it really took off.

I didn't mention going to Jacob's Pillow last Saturday. It was AWFUL! If Hofesh Schechter comes your way, don't go to see his dances. Pretentious, ear-deafening music, smoky atmospheric haze, and utterly joyless. I wanted to tell the dancers to stand up straight, because they looked like they had premature osteoporosis. How can anyone dance hunched over like that? This Saturday is Mimulus. Hope it's better.

Enough of my nattering.

May I join your check-in?

Hi there!! I'm a 50 year old!! Can I play too??? :)

Some of you may know me ... some may not. I haven't posted regularly on Cathe's site for a while. I promise to play nice. :) :) I also post under the same user name at VF.

I'll be 51 in October. I'm married (20 years in October) to a man named David, and we have a 17 year old daughter named Nicole, who will be 18 this December, and who is a Senior in High School. I brag on her a lot.

I'm currently following a nutrition program called Precision Nutrition, and I feel I am learning about truly clean eating and a healthy lifestyle for the first time in my life. In nine weeks I've lost 12 pounds, 20 inches, two jeans sizes and 4 percent body fat. A half percent per week is considered good progress.

Here is my current rotation:

Sunday - rest
Monday - strength train (I'm currently rotating two weeks of Gym Styles with two weeks of Slow & Heavy)
Tuesday - strength train
Wednesday - cardio (I can't do high impact; I stick to simple step and walking)
Thursday - strength train
Friday - kettlebell work
Saturday - HIIT

I'll try to post everyday, but sometimes I'm so busy at work I can't get on any message boards. Barbarians!! They work me too hard!!

Carol
:)

Happy Thursday!!!

Hi "Fitty Somethings" and AMAZING GAL Garance, my new "Sitty Something" check-in pal!!!

Thanks so much for the warm welcome, ladies, and a shout-out to Carol who I haven't spoken to in AGES!!!

I'm psyched to be part of this check-in, y'all. I'm gonna have to be (very uncharacteristically) succinct in some of my posts here this week and next, as we have lots of little details to attend to for the August Road Trip AND I am trying to get my younger son ready to take to college -- he will be a freshman at UNC-Chapel Hill where his brother will be a senior (see Handsome Tar Heels Evan, on the left, and Alex, on the right with full dredlocks (YIKES) in my avatar ;)). We all four leave for Chapel Hill just a couple of days after I get home from the August RT, and I don't want to have to be spending that time doing ANYTHING but enjoying my boys' company. This week, Evan and I are shopping for all the fun new stuff he needs, and I am working on laundering new sheets, towels, a new comforter, etc. and helping him get his gear together before I go back to NJ.

The July RT was just awesome, and I really hope y'all can come next year. It's an indescribable weekend. It's not just the Cathe workouts (which this year she definitely kicked up a notch or two) -- it's the amazing sense of community that the group has. Really, everyone seemed to feel so warm and comfy around each other, like we'd all known each other for eons. Very cool!

Today's workout for me hasn't happened yet but is about to. :D I'm headed upstairs to my workout room (what Mama Deb and I both call our "mole hole") after a morning and afternoon of college laundry and Road Trip paperwork/e-mails. On tap for today is: CTX Step 'n Intervals (no reason -- I'm just in the mood for it!), 4DS + CTX Back and Bis (I do them back-to-back), and 4DS LIS abs (which I had to leave off yesterday because I ran out of time.

Eating today has been okay except for a little bit too much natural peanut butter with my mid-afternoon apple. Man, I need to get that stuff OUT OF MY HOUSE. Peanut butter, Wheat Thins and popcorn -- the only three foods I know of that I am constitutionally incapable of truly rationing to myself appropriately. ;)

Sorry to rush off and not be responsive to YOUR posts -- I promise to improve as I have more time, and after this year's RT's are done and I'm an EMPTY NESTER :(, I will definitely HAVE more time!!!!

KATHY!!!!! Your boys are all grown up!!! They're so adorable!! I can't even THINK about Nik going off to college, and yet we're plannng visits like mad here. How did you handle it????

Last evening I did Cathe's Gym Style Chest & Triceps. I'm getting so much better with those drop-set push-ups at the beginning. I still have to do most of them on my knees, but the great part is I can DO them!! :)

One more week of working out in the evenings ... and then I can go back to my early mornings - HOORAY!! I'm working out in the evenings because Nicole is getting home really late from Band Camp, and of course you know I can't sleep until she's here ;) and I really don't want to get up at 4:30 after getting to sleep around 11:00. Just not good or healthy. So ... a temporary change ... but one I'll survive I'm sure!! This evening I have planned Providence, which is a 45 minute kettlebell workout. I wasn't sure how to plan this in the WOM, so for right now I called it "cardio". Kettlebells are cardio, but they're also strength and HIIT.

Tomorrow I'll do my own HIIT circuit I made up for the first time. Should be interesting!! I've incorporated trying an unassisted pull-up, an unassisted chin-up, and Roman Chair leg raises for my abs. Must get ready for STS!! Although I found this AWESOME ab workout on the Figure Athlete website (sister site to T-Nation) that I'm seriously considering working into my weekly routine.

Got to run!! I promise to try and catch up with everyone on this check-in later!!

Carol

Friday...

Hi Ladies....I was posting on another thread, intending to come here right afterwards, but my other post disappeared and now it's too late to post here....I will bb later!

Deb

August already--darn!

Hi Deb, Linny, Rhonda, Josie, Kathy, and Carol (welcome!!)--

This morning I did Ellen Barrett's Slim Sculpt (45 min.).

Wow, Carol, you sound really hardcore! I'm waiting for STS to "shock" my system, although I do think the kettlebell workout I have only done once so far will have some impact, since I was so sore after the first time. Dread factor is already high.

Kathy, I don't feel like I really had an empty next until my sons permanently vacated their rooms. They both work in the Boston area, and I am very thankful, given this horrid economy, that they have good jobs. I still haven't put away all of their sports plaques, trophies, and every now and then I speculate on the fortune they have left behind in their baseball cards. Good luck on the roadtrip! It sounds like it was great fun. It might be redundant for me, though, since we go to the Jersey shore every summer.

Going out to dinner tonight, then off to Jacob's Pillow tomororow. Maybe the Dark Knight on Sunday.

Tomorrow is my day off and sleep-in day.

ttfn

Hi! Boy it is hard to keep up when I'm off of the forum at all!! Thanks for the warm welcome. I had epigastric hernia surgery so am limited to walking for a while.

Lemoncustard:what do you teach?

I see that many of you are using kettleballs and like them. How do you fit them into your workouts and what benefits are you seeing?

Linny, what an awful experiece on your vacation :(.
I live in WI and we have had wonderful weather, especially as of late. Need to get outside now :) Enjoy your weekend!
