Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 7/26

Good afternoon. Today is my rest day so no workout. I might do a light yoga later this afternoon. For anyone interested, I don’t add anchovies to the kale salad recipe that I posted last night.

Have a great day everyone.

Carolyn thanks for the link. the salad I made was similar, olive oil and lemon juice with some grilled peaches on top. I ate it but not real happily, DH would not. the grilled peach was great!. maybe I'm not working the dressing in enough because the texture is unpleasant. I use kale cooked but cant get enthused about it raw. I'll try it again in a few days, I have enough kale here to supply the whole county. I'm one of the odd people who likes anchovies but DH really does not so I never get to use them. I like the idea of soy sauce in there since my last salad was flat tasting.

we did a road ride this morning, a lovely morning. 25 miles in 2 hours 10 min. had a significant headwind to slow us down.

Hi,

Today I did Live Burn Sets, Chest, Back & Shoulders, 47 minutes, 252 calories.

Valerie, You are having the same weather we had a couple weeks ago....no rain, and in the 90's every day! UGH... nice that you are getting back to running on the treadmill. I still have a Hoover canister that was my mother's. It still runs well. It was never good for carpeting, but great for floors, and anything you use the attachments for. I would never give it up. The vacuum repair shop we use told us to keep it as long as we can. He has fixed minor things over the years. I think you would really like the Live Burn Sets workouts. If you could use an iPad for working out, you could purchases one of the downloads of them. There are 2 upper body, and then the lower body one. Once downloaded, you don't have to stream them. Cathe uses 25 and even 30 pounds in these. My mother was kind of a cleaning fanatic too....she paid someone to come to the house to clean, then she cleaned right along side of her. I thought I read somewhere of a way to do something to kale before serving it that takes away the bitterness..I can't remember what it was or where I read it. Maybe the NG's...

Judy, great workouts last week and nice job with increasing your running time!

Diane Sue, wow, good job on Slide & Glide tabata....have not seen anyone do that one in quite a while, and the step count Friday as well! So frustrating when the FitBit starts moving around and you know that it is not getting a good reading for calories etc. I have to keep adjusting mine during workouts. I think your husband is the smartest one around here! LOL on the folding of fitted sheets. I actually have a YouTube video that is supposed to make it easy. I have a hard time even following the woman while she is doing it. I am not surprised that a Kirby was handed down...they last forever, but are never pleasant to use. I stopped even trying to use the attachments. That is what my Hoover canister was used for....all the things I would never try to do with the Kirby. I am glad my mother was not into Nick knacks at all...she called them "dust collectors" and did not have any in the house.

Carolyn, great workouts last week! Thanks for posting that recipe.... Yes, that was a tip about kale...massaging it first... Did the NG's have a tip about how to make kale so it was not bitter?

Cathy, great job on the 14,000 steps!

Hi to Lori & Christina,

Take care,

Deb our wireless signal in the workout room is awful. we have basic cable again because we got tired of trying to get a signal for local news but I never find anything to watch. right now I stick in a Cathe workout, usually one I don't do, and let it run while I run on treadmill. Ive never been able to watch movies that way, and used to watch short attention TV, like GMA, Today, Oprah that kind of thing. DH has an IPAD but I use it rarely. too much of a fuss.
I don't taste "bitter" or maybe it's not a bad taste for me. except for grapefruit..... sour and bitter. I detest grapefruit. mostly I don't like the texture of kale salads so I'm going to try again and massage more aggressively and earlier in the day so maybe it will soften. Carolyn, does it matter which kind of kale? I grow the curly leaf kind . I've grown dinosaur kale but didn't this year.
yep dust collectors.
thought we'd mt bike this morning before it hearts up but DH got a migraine already so we will do garden work, water, and I will do groceries. I have a string of appts tomorrow.

we have a lot of deer here, and last week a doe was probably hit by a car and died. one of the neighbors found her near their driveway. she had twin fawns that are now wandering around. does not sound like there is anything to be done. depends on if they are grown enough to manage on their own. its love/hate for me. they eat so many of our plants but I still love to watch them.

This morning I did Lean Legs and Abs for 49 minutes and 221 calories burned. My average heart rate was 112 and maximum heart rate was 147.

Deb, great job with Live Burn Sets Chest, Back, and Shoulders. It’s funny that you mentioned the Hoover canister vacuum. We still have one that my husband uses for the cars and small jobs in the garage. It’s about 35 years old and still works!

Valerie, I have used both types of kale, but I prefer the curly variety in the salad. When you massage it the texture changes and it’s much softer. The dinosaur kale seems tougher. The Food Network recipe uses some of the lemon juice and olive and a little honey to make a vinaigrette dressing. After massaging the kale she adds the mango (or whatever fruit) and drizzles on the vinaigrette. I haven’t tried that yet, but plan to do so soon.

Hello to everyone who comes later. Have a wonderful afternoon.

Today I did Kelly Coffey Amped Up Cardio workout #2, 30 minutes, 142 calories, heart rate 118/162, 2,567 steps. I then did Cathe Lite Strong Body Stacked Sets Timesaver #5 back and biceps, 17 minutes, 40 caloriesm heart rate 91/132, 415 steps and finished with Ice Muscle Meltdown Triceps 14 minutes, 27 calories, heart rate 88/101, 194 steps. Total time 61 minutes, 3,191 steps, 209 calories. I chose workouts that would work around my neck and shoulder problem. Still working on the therapy stuff as well. Yesterday was a rest day.
Strong Body Stacked Sets is round 3A done all moves gone through then repeated
Pullovers 1 1/2 12# dumbbells 8 reps
double arm dead row 15# dumbbells 16 reps
hip hinge back fly 8 reps (3 count as 1)
biceps curls 15# dumbbells 8 reps
8 point drop curls 10# dumbbells 16 rep
Hammer curl 15# dumbbells 8 reps
reverse curls 10# dumbbells 8 reps
repeat all moves

Ice Muscle Meltdown Triceps all exercises done in 3 rounds
Overhead triceps extensions 12# dbs 12 reps
kickbacks 12# dbs 12 reps
dips 12 reps
lying extensions 12# 12 reps
close grip bench press 12# dbs 12 reps dropped to 10# last round (bothers the front of my shoulder)
repeat 2 more times

Deb, I keep forgetting that Cathe is selling downloads of live workouts. At least I guess she is. I struggled with my Fit Bit again today when doing Amped Up Cardio. When Kelly did the drills and went to the plank moves it lost my heart rate and when I got back up I kept having to mess with the watch to get it back up. I finally quit doing the floor part of the drills and kept on with the standing portion since each drill is done twice with one movement standing and one down to the floor. I really didn't want to spend too much time in plank position anyway. I am doing planks some in the therapy moves like scapular retractions. I just remember that one of my vegetarian cookbooks they had you to put something ( I think oil)in the Kale and massage it with your hands to soften it so that it is more digestible.

Carolyn, I have had other recipes that called for anchovies and left them out. When I first started Paleo I kept finding recipes that called for them so purchased and there is no way I could eat them. I love Kale salads though :) Nice work on Lean Legs and Abs.

Valerie, I usually buy curly Kale. I am not sure what it is that Walmart Carries, but it goes bad so quickly so I usually get it at Sprouts and they only sell organic. I tried Lacinto Kale once and never purchased again. I didn't like the flavor or texture. The leaves were kind of long and narrow. Sorry your husband got a migraine. That takes away the fun. I understand about wildlife. The deer at my daughters fruit off her fruit trees and would get in their garden. I like watching squirrels, but they are destructive in attics and on roofs. I used to hear scratching around in our last home when I would go to bed at night and it worried me. My daughter's inlaws had to put out a lot of money for rewiring because they got in their attic and chewed up wiring.

Hi Everyone,

Sunday I did Live # 305, Burn Sets Legs Express Heavy Weights and yesterday I did Live #224, Fit Tower Inferno. I also did an hour of Yin Yoga last night. I really love the Live Burn Sets workouts! I also loved Fit Tower Inferno. I will do that one again.

Deb-Great workout! We had the same weather last week, in the 90's up until yesterday. I think it's cooling off a little this week.

Valerie-Great ride on Sunday! I agree with Deb, I think you would really like the Live Burn Sets. I purchase the live downloads and have them on my computer then transfer them to a thumb drive so I can watch them on my gym TV.

Carolyn-Great job with Lean Legs & Abs! That's another one I've been thinking about doing.

Diane Sue-Great workouts! That's awesome that you can do 12's for Muscle Meltdown Triceps. I'm still working up to that. I can do 12's for the close grip BP, and one set of lying triceps extensions but I have to drop down for the rest of the exercises.

Hi to Lori, Cathy & Christina!

Good morning,

No workout yesterday, Sunday had 10,8/14 steps, plus the workout. Today I did Live Burn Sets Express Lower Body, 34 minutes, 184 calories.

Valerie, it's too bad you cannot use your internet connection to download 1 or 2 of the live workouts. After that, they are on your device and no internet needed to view/play them. Those poor fawns!

Carolyn, good job on Lean Legs & Abs. That is a tough one.

Diane Sue, good job on KCM Amped up Cardio. Sorry about your Fitbit frustrations. It seems like they never end. Yes, Cathe is selling the LIve workouts as downloads. I personally would not do this, unless I was quitting the Live subscription and there were particular favorites I wanted.

Judy, I did the same Burn Sets today. Gotta love getting a complete heavy weight lower body workout in 35 minutes! I can do 15's for close grip bench presses, but, wow! no way could I do 12's for lying tricep extensions!

Hi to all, hope you are having a good week!

I had a really low energy day yesterday from lack of sleep, so all I did was Stretch Max with the band. It's always been my favorite of Cathe's long stretches. Got a decent 7 hours last night. Probably would have slept longer, but I had an obnoxious cat wanting attention.

Monday I did Turbo Barre minus the weight work, and the stretch yesterday really helped as I could tell my muscles had worked.

I did go to Verizon yesterday as my son needed a new phone before he heads of to college. They are keeping the door locked and just letting in a customer at a time. I've never had such great service. :)

Kale, and other greens like spinach. I toss some in stir frys, soups and in my smoothies.

Valerie, that's too bad about the fawns. A wildlife rehabber is really the only way they can be helped and a lot of them aren't set up to do deer. Even a fawn can have a hefty kick. We have a lot of deer in our area, so it's not at all uncommon to see ones that have been hit. The deer population in lower Michigan is higher than northern areas because of all the crops. It's the rare person who lives outside a city who hasn't hit one. :(

Great jobs on all the workouts everyone, nice to see all the variety. I'm off to do KickMax.

I did a mile and a quarter on the treadmill yesterday. it felt good. could have easily continued but dinner needed to be made. I did a load of shopping and walking yesterday.

cathy we have hit a deer. we were coming out of our driveway at top of a hill. traffic comes from the left. we need to watch left to pull out. a deer walked out of the trees to our right and we didnt see it soon enough to stop though we were turning and barely moving. it got up and ran off, we got a dent but never were sure what happened to it.
we watch like hawks but you can still get surprised. we've almost hit deer in MT too. what happens is deer try to outrun things because that's usually what works. instead of letting a car go by and crossing behind it, they run to catch up and cut in front of the car. I would not believe it until I saw it happen. the deer came from behind us, outraced the car and stretched out flat running, it cut in front of us. it was close. it was dusk. DH never even saw it.... it was so low to the ground.
much worse when you have herds of elk and possible moose around. or cows in open range areas. we say driving is a 2 person job. always watching! its similar here to michigan. ... more deer in suburbia than in the mountains. we have friends who hit an elk on the interstate at night, totaled their truck and put both of them in the hospital.
there's a wildlife rehab place near here but fawns in summer are common and they are hard to catch. if the fawn gets too habituated to people it will not survive either.

I use kale in soups and things but have been defeated by salads so far. another try today.

Judy you might need to give me more details. I will look at the TV in the workout room when I get back later today. no idea if it has a thumb drive but it isn't very old. all of you like live workouts, and if I can avoid using DH's ipad, it is feasible. I'm fine with dvds except for using the treadmill and elliptical.

I used to love anchovies on pizza but havent had it in decades. I'm the only one who will eat them.

Valerie-If the TV isn't old then I bet it has a thumb drive. Our living room tv is 7 years old and it has one. I purchase the downloads (if you spend over $20 you can use the coupon code "SAVE 20" to get 20% off) then save them to my desktop computer and copy the files to the flash drive. The files are around 1.5 to 2 gigabytes. This is the drive I use:

Today I did Fit Split Shred Cardio and Push Day. Shred Cardio was 26 minutes and 200 calories burned. Average heart rate was 130 and maximum heart rate was 143. Push Day was 35 minutes with 154 calories burned. My average heart rate with that was 111 and maximum heart rate was 134. I had forgotten about Fit Split so I was glad to do this workout.

Diane Sue, nice job with Amped Up Cardio, Strong Body Stacked Sets timesaver, and Muscle Meltdown Triceps.

Judy, great job with Live Burn Sets Legs Express, Live Fit Tower Inferno, and Yin Yoga.

Deb, it looks like you and Judy chose the same workout. Great minds!

Cathy, Stretch Max was a good choice for a low energy day.

Valerie, good luck with your kale salad. Maybe you can mix in some other type of greens with the kale after you massage it.

Hi to Lori and Christina.

Step Boss Step Sync, 59 minutes, heart rate 117/136  , 286 calories, 5,901 steps. I then did Step Boss Ab Stacker, 10 minutes, 21 calories, heart rate 97/121, 99 steps. I finished with Lindsey Samper Yoga therapy neck and shoulder pain #11, 27 minutes, 26 calories. Total time was 94 minutes, calories 333, steps 6,000

Judy, nice work on the workouts. I am glad that you liked the Fit Tower Inferno. It makes me interested in getting live again. It keep thinking about doing it. Still love Kelly though. I used to do kickbacks with 15's. Since the neck and shoulder issues I veer off to a bit lighter. Close grip bench press tends to make the front of my shoulders hurt from neck down to my elbows. I think it sets off a nerve there when it gets inflamed. It is quite annoying.

Deb, nice work on the Steps Sunday and the weights today. I am just guessing, does Cathe Live downloads have to be played off of a computer or device? I guess I could put it on an external drive to play, which I can plug into the television. For me it would be dependent on the workout type and cost if I would do it. Probably better just to pay the monthly fee.

Cathy, I think most cellular providers have good service other than AT&T. AT&T is a real pain. There used to be a smaller AT&T store near us and they were quick, helpful and efficient till they decided to go to the bigger facility that handles a large area of people. My son likes Verizon. We had T mobile for a long time, but once we were out in a cabin area in the mountains and could not get a call out to the rest of the family since we were having a hard time locating where we were supposed to meet. Otherwise they were good service wise.

Valerie, my brother used to work for Directv in NE and he is blind in one eye. He had deer run out in front of him from his blind side several times and it was not good. He has a glass eye. He lost his eyesight in that eye when he was 5 years old and children were playing with sling shots. My parents took him from AZ to Houston to see a specialist that they read an article on, but they could do nothing for him. It was rough.
I wish animals didn't run right out in front of you. I came close to hitting deer a couple of times, but thankfully managed not to. I had a squirrel sitting on the side of the road decide to run right under my tire once and I hated the thump :( My granddaughter was squealing over it. In our neighborhood you have to drive cautiously as there are deer, geese, ducks, and squirrels all over the place.
I have an external drive and have Cathe downloads on it and can just plug it into the USB port on my television and play the workouts. I checked it out a couple of times, but I like the dvds better because downloads do not have chaptering and options to do premixes.

Carolyn, I have been doing some of the Fit Split workouts. I like the push and pull workouts. With so many workouts it is hard to remember all of them.

Judy I looked briefly at the TV and found a long strip of tape around the screen edges, but dont see a usb port. its not on the front or sides. I dug out the owner manual thinking there would be a picture identifying where things are located. no luck. I can't get a signal in the basement so this would be a good way to take data to the TV, if the port is in an accessible place on the TV. TV is up high and will take 2 people to find the port. its only about 2 years old so it must have a port somewhere.

I definitely don't have any love for Verizon, but they are the only carrier with decent service once you get out of metro areas.
we've hit a few critters but the deer was the biggest one. since I saw the deer try to "out run" our car, I pay even closer attention. I almost hit a deer on my bike once time, and I did hit a dog that ran at me from the side. no time to even brake.

diane sue so sad about your brother losing an eye. a bad injury to have to live with.

I did x train bis and tris premix and the ab workout. I like the burn set version better but this is good too. I use 12's for most of it. cathe may do curls with 20 lbs but I sure can't. I can go to 15 on at least some of it.

Valerie-Our usb ports are in the back of the tv, next to the hdmi connection. You could also use external hard drive like Diane Sue mentioned. We have one but I haven't tried it on the tv yet.

Diane Sue- Doing kickbacks with 15's is amazing! I will be so happy when I can do all of the tricep muscle meltdowns with 12's and not have to drop down.
That is very sad about your brother. It must have been very difficult for your family to go through that.

Carolyn-Great job with Fit Split! I need to revisit that series.

thanks judy, I think it has usb ports but not reachable as the TV sits. its a 48" flat screen and fairly new but we have it sitting on top of speakers on top of a table in an alcove. I knew that flash drive solution sounded too easy! not giving up. tv is too big, needs 2 people to get it down. I don't have an external hard drive. I try but electronics are not a strong suit for me.

my 12 lb weights are oddities... metal with rounded ends. we had a whole set of these. DH didn't like them and gave away the whole set to a nephew. I could have strangled him! I had the 12s set aside and kept those. the ends of the dumbbells slide against each other so doing standing tricep work. the hand grip area smells funny and gets slippery so its duct taped. the weights dont rest together but clank and slip. wont rest against each other like the hex ones. if weights are ever available at a reasonable price I'd buy 12's in a second. I cant jump from 10's to 15's. they are Ok for work where the dumbbells dont rub against each other. I still like the tricep push ups on the bench from stacked upper by far the best to isolate triceps in a push up. much better focus for me than seesaw push ups.

I did LITE Stacked Sets Upper Body this morning. I really like that one. Moves fast and I get 30 or the 35 minutes as cardio on my FitBit.

That's interesting about the deer running parallel with cars and then dodging in front of them. Ours generally do one of two things: 1) they race full speed straight across the road 2) they walk. Walkers are generally easier to see and avoid unless they walk about of something dense like a tall cornfield. We have lots of those right now. I've hit three and 2 died. One literally jumped up out of a deep ditch and landed right in front of my car. No one would have avoided it. The last one, that lived, was bizarre. I was taking Derek to school and it was still dark. He saw it coming from the opposite lane side when it hit the headlight beam and yelled and I hit the brakes. It hit my front left side and flipped, it's antler stuck in and pulled out the emblem in the center and then it flipped again and hit the right side rolled over in the ditch and ran off. I'm pretty positive the antlers saved its life. Without them it would have slammed its head, though I'm sure it had a headache.

We have elk in northern lower Michigan, but I've never seen any in the wild. The UP has moose, and I really don't want to meet them on the road. My car would be toast. I would love to see one standing well away from the road in one of the wetlands I drive through up there, but nothing so far.

I decided this morning that I greatly prefer doing tricep pushes on the step and the plyo pushups to regular ones.

Carolyn I still need to do the Fit Split series. I think that's up next after what I'm doing this round. Sounds like you got a great workout.

Diane Sue we have AT&T Uverse and there is not much I hate more than having to talk to them. Out here other than satellite it's our only option for internet. We had satellite years ago and it was expensive and our usage was so limited that we really couldn't watch any video at or it ate up our allotment for the day. That combo of Step Sync and Ab Stacker is one of my favorite.

Today I did X 10 Low Impact for 25 minutes and 171 calories burned. My average heart rate was 128 and maximum heart rate was 146. Then I did STS Extended Stretch for another 15 minutes and 45 calories burned. X10 is another workout that I’m revisiting after several years. I couldn’t remember it at all so I previewed it yesterday. After looking back through my workout logs I saw that it was 2016 when I last did it.

Diane Sue, great job with Step Sync and the Abs Stacker. That’s a good workout. I like the Fit Split workouts now that I have looked at them again. I went back through my old workout logs and read some of my comments about them and others. It’s encouraging to see how much progress I have made over the last few years.

Valerie, great job with X Train Bis and Tris. We have been watching the Perry Mason remake series on HBO and it made me think of you. Have you seen any of the episodes? I’m not a big television person, but I started watching it with my husband and it’s quite good.

Cathy, nice work with Stacked Sets Upper Body. I like that one too.
