Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 7/02/2023

Today I did STS 2.0 Body Parts Shoulders 47 minutes, 98 calories and Foam Rolling upper body 21 minutes. I still have my grandson here. If I get time I will come back and post my workout. I wish the WOrkout cards were better and had things like reps on them. Or at least equipment on the card. I got out my step because I saw incline and seated moves listed and it ended up being seated on the floor and using a stability ball. I know equipment is on the dvd, but I did not look there prior. It would just make things easier.

Well I had planned to do a Kickbox Express workout, but somehow I ended up choosing a different one. Stopped after about 28 minutes because I was needing to text Derek who is traveling and had questions. But, something had seemed really off. After the fact, I discovered it was the very first Cathe Live. That explained a lot. Especially the technical difficulties at the beginning. The queuing only to the class where later on she started using hands to indicate direction to both home and class. There was also a section where the video was taken from behind and high up so you were looking down at the class and one section even had a small close up inserted on the screen of Cathe. That was from behind, but it would be lovely if they did that from the front view whenever the camera is off her. The beginning was kickboxing, then when they went to the bags, only half the class went and the others were using weights and then doing pushups. Only one person per bag where now there are up to 3. Of course after the fact I discovered it was a bootcamp workout that is almost an hour long. :D After that I did the STS 2 Metabolic Core workout. I really like that one for a short core.

Derek texted me from the rest area we stop at and he should be to where we get gas in another 1/2 hour. So far he's making good time and not getting off track. With the new Michigan law about no hands on phones while driving we taped my phone charger to his dash, it's the kind where the phone sits up right, and it plugs into a charger. My car has no decent place for a phone holder, but I need to get one. I rarely go places I don't know how to get, and when I do Derek is usually with me, but definitely times I can use one.

Diane Sue great job with STS 2.0 Body Parts Shoulders, I still have a couple weeks with the Upper/Lower Body workouts before going on to parts. I agree about the workout cards they are lacking in several areas. Enjoy another day with your grandson.

Valerie very nice that you got in a ride yesterday along with the stretch and therapy work. The deep sleep thing runs in my family, though I certainly didn't get it. One of my nephews is like that and although somewhere along the way he got better, my brother was very much like that. When we were kids the smoke alarm randomly went off in the middle of the night, right outside his open bedroom door, and while the rest of us were out of bed and in the hall he slept through the whole thing! When I was at his place last Thanksgiving it was fascinating to watch him. Alarm would go off blaring music less than 2' away and he never moved. I'd just snooze it and see what happened. Finally one time, I just stopped it and let him sleep and he missed the first part of his precious Bengals game. Hope you are able to stop the deer, it's amazing the things animals can get into when you think you've got things well set up.

Judy great job with 45 minute Peloton Power Zone Ride and arm work. Looks like we will have a cooler day today. We finally got some rain, but I don't know if it's enough to help much. The corn field next to use is definitely NOT going to be knee high by the 4th of July and there's some pretty sparse areas. Crops around here are really taking a hit.

Carolyn sorry you are having to deal with that horrible heat. I saw an article yesterday about wet bulb temperatures, which I'd never heard of, but it very dangerous to people who can't get into cooler places. I hope you are able to stay cool.

This is another rest day for me.

Judy, thanks for starting us off this week. Great job with the Peloton rides and Peloton arms.

Diane Sue, great job with Body Parts Shoulders and Foam Rolling Upper Body.

Cathy, good job with Live Kickboxing and STS 2.0 Metabolic Core. I’m avoiding the horrible heat by not going outside during the afternoons. I’m staying inside where it’s cool and comfortable. They have opened cooling centers in many areas for people who don’t have air or a cool place to go.

Valerie, I’m glad that you are able to get your rides done.

Have a wonderful day everyone.

We got in our ride this morning. was overall lovely with a problem. 2.5 hours with the tire repair. DH got a flat about half way ( 25 miles) in a sunny spot with no possible shade. its not that hot here but still much easier to thrash thru replacing a tube in a cool shady spot. tire pumps and tubes and hand pumps and CO2 cartridges look easy but never simple. we are heating up here later in the week, but nothing like hot places. my sympathy Carolyn and cathy, and Judy and maybe Diane sue. when it gets hot here humidity is usually low. that makes the difference. I got the hell out of the midwest due to what I thought was awful weather most of the year. I won't even vacation in hot places I dislike it so much.

cathy that is so odd with the sleep issue. almost dangerous, if you can sleep thru a smoke alarm. my parents were brutal about that. we were not allowed to 'sleep in". it was a reason to make it especially obnoxious to make sure no one slept past whatever time they got up, like 7 or 8 am. didnt matter why, everyone had to be up early in the morning or they would bang pots, run the vacuum, whatever it took. Especially if it was a "social" reason" like working late, or being out later at a party. my mother could be quite the bitch. I never was a deep sleeper and cant sleep unless conditions are perfect, and even then its dicey. does not get better with age.

its illegal here to use a cell phone while driving. my car is old. I dont have the phone connected, not sure its even possible. sometimes I would like to hear the directions but it doesnt carry well on the seat next to me if traffic is loud. phone doesn't fit in the cup holder. if I need it, I have to pull over and look at the screen. usually I know where Im going from looking ahead of time.

Today I did STS 2.0 Body Parts Legs. My time was 52 minutes with 188 calories burned. My average heart rate was 109 and maximum heart rate was 145. That workout certainly seems like more than 188 calories burned! Then I did STS 2.0 Total Body Stretch, 23 minutes and 29 calories burned.

Valerie, nice ride even though your husband got a flat tire. Using the phone while driving is illegal here too, but it doesn’t stop people from doing it. Phones have to be hands free, but drivers are still distracted by their screens.

Hello to Cathy, Judy, and Diane Sue.

Today's workout was STS 2.0 Body Parts Back, 54 minutes(actual is 42 minutes, I had to switch out equipment a lot because of space) 115 calories which is weird because I burned more than this when I did it before with a timesaver no repeats. Maybe because the other time I had done a 30 minute cardio first. I finished with STS 2 mobility 2, 17 minutes, 30 calories. Total time was 71 minutes, 145 calories.

No workout yesterday but I went and walked at the zoo. This morning I did STS 2 Upper Body 2. The dips with the bars went better this time, as I positioned my blue fabric band better. Derek's throat had been bothering him and by the time he got to Marquette it was really bad, and he couldn't eat solid foods, so he and Aliah went to Urgent Care. He has strep throat. Gee too bad no one suggested to him it was an infection, oh wait I did. He got a precription and was already able to eat normal food by yesterday. Hazards of working with children.

Carolyn great job with STS 2.0 Body Parts Legs. I still have this week and next week with the Upper/Lower Body workouts before moving on to the Parts ones. The way the rotation was set up, you don't do every part in 7 days, so I'm curious how my body reacts to that.

Valerie sorry your ride got disrupted by the flat tire, but sounds like it was good otherwise. From what I can find on deep sleepers it has something to do with sleep spindles and the number of those shrinks with age, which may explain why my brother reached a point where he could wake up. I also seem to recall reading years ago that people who had night terrors as children may be heavy sleepers. Nick had that from about 6-18 months and I was very thankful that his only lasted a few minutes, and were not a nightly occurence, as I had a friend who's son had them for long periods each time. The person experiencing them remembers nothing, but for the people listening to them cry it's rough and there's nothing you can do to wake them. Nick would just settle down and go back to regular sleep without ever waking up. We are around 90 today and tomorrow, but then back to upper 70's-80 range. Was very glad to see that when Derek and I go to Columbus next weekend the temps will be 80-86 range and we've been down there when it's really hot. Baseball tournament with no shade hovering around 100 is not fun.

Diane Sue great job with STS 2.0 Body Parts Back and Mobility 2.

Hi Judy!

Happy 4th of July! Today I did STS 2.0 Body Parts Shoulders. My time was 41 minutes with 176 calories burned. I’m amazed at the heavy weights that Cathe uses for shoulders!

Diane Sue, great job with Body Parts Back.

Cathy, great job with Upper Body 2. I’m sorry that Derek was sick, but glad that he’s getting better. You are so right about the hazards of working around children.

Hello to Valerie and Judy. I hope that everyone is having a wonderful day.

rode again this morning after a loud night. I'm ok with fireworks if it was one night certain hours. this area is awful. crap going off at all hours for weeks already, but increasing in intensity as the actual holiday nears. I HATE this holiday. people here make the weeks around the 4th into a war zone. last night was awful. it's been picking up daily. Happy 4th to everyone anyway.
Whatever! we rode this morning, 15 miles. DH got another flat at 12 miles. same tire, new tube, new rim tape. Arrgh! this time I rode to trail end, loaded my bike, drove back to the last road crossing where DH was waiting after walking back a ways. there are long sections of the trail without road access.

in case you want to know, rim tape covers the inner side of the bike wheel where the spokes come thru the metal. I didn't know it existed until he started getting flats all the time. this time he used wider rim tape that supposedly isn't needed. enough damn flats! he's had at least 20 flats with this bike while Ive had one. we don't patch leaky tubes, just put in new. we cant find a rough spot. hopefully the wider tape will cover the problem.

cathy I must be on my last spindle! I cant sleep thru much of anything. used to be less delicate. the best thing we've done was buy mini splits for our bedrooms. we shut bedroom windows at night and get better sleep. very quiet, don't use much electricity, and cool a specific room. tired of loud obnoxious inconsiderate people. yep children are little growing bacterial and viral culture plates! strep is so miserable.

Today I did STS 2 Lower Body 2. One more round of the upper/lower body workouts and I can move on to parts. Derek is not a fan of fireworks, and apparently lots of people around Marquette feel free to set them off whenever over the last few days. But, I saw some of the fireworks show on the bay an it was pretty spectacular. Last night they did a laser show at the old ore dock which I'd love to see. They also do a laser show at Christmas. I don't mind actual firework shows since people know they are happening, but I sure wish they would ban individuals from having them.

Valerie really sorry to hear that your husband had another flat. What a pain.

Carolyn great job with STS 2.0 Body Parts Shoulders. What do you think of the parts videos. I can almost always match Cathe on weight when it comes to anything shoulder height or below, but almost never on overhead presses.

Hi to Diane Sue and Judy.

This morning I did JS One Mile of Motivation for 15 minutes, 117 calories burned, average heart rate 137 and maximum heart rate 165. Then I did Active Recovery for 12 minutes, 67 calories burned, average heart rate 127, and maximum heart rate 150. I still modified some of those “animal” movements, but I like it better than I did initially.

Valerie, good job with your ride. I’m sorry that the fireworks were so annoying for you. We had some fireworks around us, but nothing excessive. I expected to hear them over several days because of the long weekend but that didn’t happen.

Cathy, great job with Lower Body 2. I was dreading the Body Parts workouts but I have liked the two that I’ve done so far, Legs and Shoulders. The pace is slower as with all of the STS 2.0 workouts and there are enough options to fit most people. I’m waiting to see how I feel about biceps and triceps .

Hello to Judy and Diane Sue.

I am fine with professional fireworks displays. theres a set date and time. I feel the future is with laser light displays. non polluting, no fire risk, and more versatile. maybe fireworks will go the way of the land line phone? we have indian reservations here. they sell illegal fireworks starting weeks ahead. this junk is not available anywhere else. it is not colorful displays, but loud explosive devices . drives people and animals crazy. if it was limited to one night once a year it would be fine. people can plan, medicate, and prepare. we get ka-booms all year especially for weeks around the 4th. and NYE. with increasing fire danger everywhere, it is incredibly dangerous and disruptive. all the lost and traumatized pets, PTSD vets, and livestock not to mention wildlife. Fireworks are illegal in many cities and municipalities now, but not "out in the county". there is no way to control it. the majority of people want it restricted but our elected officials are too chicken to write any legislation.

Michigan allows some fireworks to be sold, but where I'm at it's only an hour to IN and they sell stuff you can't get here, so a lot of people do that. I agree most people are way past over the way individuals use fireworks. I was doing a little searching and discovered that cherry bombs were illegal back in the 60's. Found that interesting as it was a multiple time a year occurrence for someone to roll one down a hallway at school in the 70's. Of course, there was also smoking of multiple types in the bathrooms. Though honestly I'd take both those things over what we have these days.

Cathy even in communities where fireworks are illegal, so many people setting stuff off that the police can't even begin to keep up. in fact, residents say its worse since making them illegal. even yesterday on Next door all the lost pet posts are coming up, with people who have lost pets and people who have "found" pets. we got our first cat like that, right after the 4th. what happens here is fireworks are legal to sell on the res, illegal to blow up anywhere . How does that work??? doesn't stop anyone. most people I think would let this slide for a designated day, prepare for noise, be done. however this started weeks ago and has been increasing until this weekend when it got totally nutso. when we were kids, sparklers were regulated and dangerous. times have changed.

am sorry I have not posted much. Things have been busy and then last night my dog was so distraught over the fireworks and they were still going off at 1:30 this morning. She whined and barked and kept trying to cling to me. I got to sleep at 2 am. I had so much back and neck pain yesterday. I tried everything to relieve it. I am unsure if these workouts were a good idea. I will do cardio again tomorrow and hit Biceps tomorrow. I went light today for chest. STS 2 Body Part Chest 39 minutes and only 69 calories, heart rate 80/105. I followed with Mobility 1 18 minutes, 23 calories. Total time 57 minutes, 92 calories.

Sunday was a rest day. Monday I did a back & tricep workout at the gym. Yesterday I did a 1 hour Peloton ride and today I walked outside for 30 minutes and did STS 2.0 Body Parts Legs, Express Premix 1 (33 minutes).

Diane Sue-Great job with STS 2.0 Body Parts Shoulders and Foam Rolling, Body Parts Back, Mobility 2, Body Part Chest and Mobility 1. I’m so sorry about the fireworks and your dog. We had the same issue with our cats last night. I’m sorry about your back & neck pain. I hope that gets better soon.

Cathy-Great job with the first Cathe Live and STS 2 Lower Body 2. I remember doing that live one when Cathe started her live channel. It was like a kickboxing-bootcamp class. Hard to believe that was almost 10 years ago! I’m sorry about Derek having strep throat. It’s good that he’s getting better so quickly.

Carolyn-Great job with STS 2.0 Body Parts Legs, Total Body Stretch, Body Parts Shoulders, JS One Mile of Motivation and Active Recovery. I like what I’ve seen of the Body Parts workouts so far. I’m tentatively planning to do a full STS 2.0 rotation in the fall, probably starting in October.

Valerie-Great job with your rides. I’m sorry about your husband’s flat tires. I had an issue like that over 20 years ago. It was a new bike and I had 2 flats within a couple of days. After the second one I took it back to the bike shop and they replaced the wheel. No more issues after that as I recall. The fireworks were bad here too.

This morning I did 30 Minute Kickbox Express and STS 2 Chair Yoga. I think my main issue with yoga is that there's a lot of repetition that the stretch workouts just don't have. Have a noon appointment, so shopping this afternoon (allowing for the workouts) and will be keeping tabs on Derek who is driving back today. Thankfully being in the country we had no one doing fireworks right by us, the cats while they will come inside, once in don't seem to care. Happy about that since I spent years with an 80 lb dog in my lap whenever there were any near by.

Judy great job with the gym back & tricep workout, Peloton ride and outside walk and STS 2.0 Body Parts Legs, Express Premix 1.

Diane Sue I'm sorry about all the issues you are having. I hope you are able to resolve them. Great job with STS 2 Body Part Chest and mobility.

This morning I did STS 2.0 Body Parts Back. That was 54 minutes and 172 calories burned. My average heart rate was 107 and maximum heart rate was 134. There’s a lot of band work in this one.

Diane Sue, great job with STS 2.0 Body Parts Chest and Mobility 1. I’m sorry that you are having such neck and back pain.

Judy, great job with back and triceps at the gym, 1 hour Peloton ride, outdoor walk, and STS 2.0 Body Parts Legs express premix 1.

Cathy, great job with 30 Minute Kickboxing Express and STS 2.0 Chair Yoga.

Hello to Valerie.

the noise goes on, although less than over the weekend. sigh. most will be over soon.

we did a road ride this morning about 20 miles, forgot to look at the odometer when we finished. 2 hours. some wind, some hills, and now we have some smoke from Canadian wildfires. not enough to stay indoors, but visible. sad that this will be part of summer now. I've never read what started all the fires there. we are getting some things on my bike upgraded so wont have it for a few days. DH intended to get this for my birthday but it took the shop a while to get all the parts needed. if you have tried looking for a road bike the last few years, things have been sparse or unavilable since the covid mess. the shop finally got it all and can replace things. my bike is a Trek but tis at least 10 yrs old, probably more but it fits me better than newer ones and there is no reason to not keep it and upgrade it instead. meantime last Feb I had the carpal tunnel release that helped my wrist function. that was one of the main reasons we were doing this. its some type of upgraded electronic shifting system so I don't have to push the shifter lever as hard. it was awkward, left handed and sometimes I couldn't do it. I haven't had trouble with it since the surgery but we already had the process in motion. No flats today!
yesterday was a rest day mostly except for therapy work that I did while watching TV.
