Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 6/7

Good morning,

It rained all day yesterday, and it looks like we will be getting more today. It is ok, we need it badly.

Valerie, I would be upset if a casino moved near land that I thought was going to remain secluded too! Maybe your DH should volunteer to take the maintenance guy's place when he can no longer do the job? Just kidding! :)

Lynda, yes, it was the Julie Christie version that I was thinking of. No, we are not near the prison break, it is more upstate NY. We are at the very western side. It is all the news here though, that is all they talk about on the local talk radio show. Kind of scary if you are in the area. The big question is who helped them inside, how did they take power tools from the "work" area that they were assigned to etc. It's sounds like something that they make movies out of. Let me know if you get the coat for Max. I hope it works.

Lori, so sorry to hear about your cousin's son. :(. You sold S&H? I think you would have liked that series. I had it originally on VHS, didn't like the style of lifting at that time, then a few years went by and for some reason that style appealed to me and I bought them again on DVD. I think you need to tell your manager about your shoulder and if you continue to do the mailroom stuff, you may have to take some disability time as well. Isn't it better that hey get a full time temp rather than lose you too?

Judy, which KCM are you selling? I have sold some of hers too. I really like her weight ones though. Do you like the new pyramid one?

Hi to Josie, & Dawn,

Take care,

Lori-I am so sorry about your cousin's son :( I will keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers.

Deb-The KCM that I am selling is "TLC". I like the KCM weight and ab workouts but I don't really care for her cardio/boxing workouts. I did TLC once and didn't like it at all. I haven't done the new pyramid workout yet, but I think I will like it, from the preview that I watched.

Judy,

I also sold TLC. I agree with you, I am not really fond of her cardio/kickbox stuff. I almost sold "LIFT" which is her Olympic style lifting DVD, ( hated that style) but for some reason tried the second workout called PowerSculpt, and that one is one of my favorites. You never know!

Yesterday was a bit of a scramble... we have a mouse problem in the garage again. we'd replaced one door gasket and it looks like the other relatively new one will need to be replaced too. unless we can figure out where else they get in. we tend to leave the door open when we drive in with a hot car to let the heat escape. I don't know if they come in then? I used to store extra food/cleaning/paper products on shelves out there but can't until we get this figured out. we had such a mile d winter maybe this is the result. we have a lot of moles and voles this year too in the lawn and garden. little holes everywhere.

no workout. we'd planned to ride but I ended up getting my hair done in the morning. by the time I got back it was too hot. today is cooler so will ride shortly. I got doms from the upper workout but both sides are equally affected and it actually feels good since it's been so long for me. Pleasantly achy all over the worked out areas.
DH and I want to do a backpack this week. a short easy one to try some new equipment. we bought a new tent and DH a new bag. we are working on lightening our packs to make trips less difficult. all gear has gotten so much lighter...it's silly to use old things that weigh 2-3x as much if we can afford to upgrade. we can carry less "stuff'" because materials are better and more versatile.

Lori so sorry to hear of your cousin's son. so many young people suffer from PTSD. so sad. I wonder why these recent conflicts seem to have caused so much trouble for so many young people.
after all your heavy bag workouts I think you could deliver a formidable punch in the nose.. they should not take the threat lightly!.

S&H is one series I never owned. I have the GS style ones I used to use a lot. when x train came out I switched to it. I should take a few minutes and look thru some of my older workouts.

Watched "Still Alice" last night. very good but disturbing movie. Julianne moore is excellent as always. alzheimers is such a scary thing. DH said they didn't make it anywhere near as bad as it can be.

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, Judy, and Dawn--

This morning I did RK with 1 lb. gloves.

Lori, that is very sad news about your cousin's son. I hope it was not another suicide, which seems to be the case with so many victims of PTSD. I would definitely tell your employer about your shoulder problems. The last thing you should be doing is heavy lifting to pick up the slack in the mail room. If you go out on disability, then it's on them.

Deb, I heard that some woman in the sewing shop had a 'thing' for one of those killers. I cannot believe some of the interviews, where people are saying things like, "He was very handsome," like it's some kind of excuse for helping the guy escape. Glad this is nowhere near you.

Judy, it was on the overhead presses that I would start with 15s and then go down to 12s. I can't remember what I used for the others, but I just remember those overhead presses, because they were slow, being real killers for me.

Valerie, yes, Still Alice was great acting, but I just found it depressing. Glad you had no bad after-effects from the upper body workout.

Hi to Josie and Dawn!

Good evening ladies!

Today with the ladies we did lower fix and tonight I did Cathe Live Kickboxing and Barre and did not use any weights or gloves to make it easier for my shoulders. Her barre work in this bites in a good way. :)

Thank you for your kind words. I will not be going to the funeral. The wake is Friday and the funeral is Saturday. I had no idea it would be so fast. I am sure my cousin just wants to get it over with. I am going to look to see what I can do for my cousin in his sons name. If you have any ideas please let me know.

Well...they gave me 18 hours Temp time for the mailroom which I will stretch to 20. :) I can live with this for the time being.

Deb...yup never did S&H. Figured if I ever want too I can play it from her On Demand. It's funny not even sure why I bought it. Was it included in a series? Can't remember. Perhaps that is why I have it. I actually have sold quite a few workouts recently on ebay. For the past few years I have been buying both the dvd and digital and I hardly reach for dvd's anymore so I decided to sell them all.

Valerie...hope you can get the mouse problem under control. Amazing how they can fit thru the tiniest opening. Funny to read how you want to lighten your backbacks. My DH just said to me he needs a new golf bag because his is too heavy compaired to what is out there now. Not sure if I will watch Still Alice.

Josie...thank you for sharing the pictures.

Lynda...today I heard the escapees were thought to be headed to Vermont. Crazy how they got out. How can someone have a thing for one of those slugs? Unbelievable.

Judy...I agree, the new KCM's do look good. I was very tempted to buy them but was able to resist the urge. With Cathe Live, On Demand and SB I really am trying not to buy any more dvd's. Of course that excludes buying Cathe new workouts. :)

Hi to Dawn!

Good morning,

A beautiful day yesterday, it was so sunny and not a lot of humidity. I stuck around the house, did not feel well. I have had a "mimic UTI" for about a week now, went to the Urologist, urine analysis done, supposedly no infection. It has continued, off an on. Not sure what causes this but it is really annoying.

Valerie, I hope you get to the bottom of your mouse problem. Good to hear that your workout only resulted in normal DOMS...:). That movie sounds depressing. It reminded me of the title of a book I have on my "to read" list called "What Alice Forgot" by Liane Moriarty, the same person that wrote Big, Little Lies. There is a good "Books" to read thread going on in the Open Forum here. This book is on it, along with a lot of others that I am noting down.

Lynda, I know what you mean, how can people "hero-ize" ( I think I just made that work up! LOL) these prison guys? It shows how people think the world is movies and video games or something like that. These are KILLERS for crying out loud!

Lori, glad they increased your temp time hours. I would still not do any of the lifting, and it the job doesn't get done because of that, oh well. It is not worth it for you to aggravate an injury. You are getting the actual DVD's for the new workouts, even though you can get them On Demand? Would your cousin be someone that would like plant a tree in honor of his son? I received a tree from the people in one of our offices when my Dad passed away, and I thought that was so nice. I have had them sent since to others. see below: just an idea.

Josie, I got the video link but no pictures. Did you send pics?

Is anyone else having an ant problem this spring? We have been seeing carpenter ants in the house, more than usual. Mostly in the kitchen, and I cannot find them in any cupboards or anything, not sure how or where they are coming from.

I have an Ortho Dr appointment for my hand, today, which I banged up when I first retired, breaking up a "set to" between the dogs. I thought it would heal on its own but it never did. I hope it is not something they think needs surgery. Ugh.

Hi to Judy, and Dawn,

Take care,

Hi Ladies,

Karina came over on Tuesday and I went o body attack on Wednesday. Today I was planing on running this morning, but it was raining so I just got back in the bed:). Karina will be over later.

Lori, I'm so sorry for your loss, my condolences to you and your family. Glad that you got some extra hours for your temp. You are so efficient that they wanted to save money at your expense.

Deb, hope that you don't need surgery. I broke my foot when I retired remember :). That is funny that we both got hurt.

Valerie, those mice are persistent little rascals :). Hope that you get it under control. Glad that your shoulder is feeling better.

Deb, I did send pics. I will send them again to you.

Garance, have you bought any new spring/summer clothes? I have to go shopping for a few things for our trip to Greece. We leave next Monday.

Hi Judy!

Josie

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, Judy, and Dawn--

This morning I did AB (54:00).

Deb, so sorry you are not feeling well. I remember the incident with your hand. Is it still hurting or does something feel out of place? That's a great idea for a memorial. What Alice Forgot is pretty funny--definitely not about early onset Alzheimer's. The Husband's Secret is also by Liane Moriarty and was a good read.

Lori--that's great that you will have some help. No reason why you should be doing two jobs, plus being an aerobics instructor for your fellow workers. I remember when Slow and Heavy came out that it was kind of "the next best thing" for developing strength and getting sculpted. The antidote to high reps I guess. Always some new way to train. I think everything works as long as you DO it.

Josie, yes, when Boden had a 30% off, free shipping and free returns, I bought a romper and a shift dress in linen. I was skeptical of both, but they look great. I also bought a couple dresses at Gudrunsjoden.com. I love her stuff, and it arrives so fast all the way from Sweden.

Valerie, mice are so destructive. DH has a rodenticide that he puts in the barns that really seems to work.

Hi to Judy and Dawn!

Last night was a real riot. We were sleeping already ( this was 11-ish) and suddenly our quiet little cat went berserk, climbing the vertical blinds, racing around the house up and down the stairs at 100 mph. ...chasing something. we turned on lights wondering what was happening...... a bat. this is the first time Puss ever acted like a predator... we stowed him in the bedroom and started closing off doors to isolate the bat in rooms with doors outside .. after a couple turns around the place... he flew toward the front door ...I opened it ... and out he went. not too hard.

we have no idea how he got in but we have a lot of bats here in summer. the siding on our house works almost like bat boxes. then this morning we got another mouse. bagged plans to hike and tore up the garage, cleaning as we went. we found another dead mouse and a nest site with shredded stuff. it was disgusting. Our garage is reasonably clean and organized ( really) but we took this opportunity to clean and sort and get rid of a lot of stuff. took us most of the day. we vacuumed, mopped, tossed old stuff. we think we probably had a pair nesting inside and we've been dealing with an internal problem with offspring. we set a bunch of traps, and if they are getting in from outside somehow ..we need to know. I think the bat was likely in the garage, and when I opened the laundry room door, he flew in and hunkered down until if got dark. I hope we don't have a bigger problem.

Deb, there are myriad things that can go wrong with hands.. they can tell a lot by looking and feeling, and of course imaging. after all this time, best to see someone. Still Alice was disturbing. I think we all worry about dementia of some sort robbing us of our abilities.... but not at age 50. Scary stuff.

Lynda, I can'T imagine how big a problem mice would be in a farm setting. rodenticide would be a last resort.

Josie... and anyone else who likes snack bars ... you must try KIND bars. a lot of flavors to pick from, low sugar, and yummy. I like the dark chocolate, almonds and sea salt best but plenty of others to choose from. Even DH... who I thought would never give up Luna bars.... decided he loves these. travel very well and don't melt. Really good.

Is there a word for people who get involved with prisoners? Not "'sucker" but it seems to be a common issue for women to get charmed and conned. they think they will change them? how can someone be so gullible??

Lori when we started backpacking, it would be common for packs to weight 50-60 lbs. more for longer trips, or if you needed climbing gear, cameras, etc. Now because of technical advances people get very very light, down in the 20 lb range. depends on where and how far you go...attitudes and gear have changed. we will never get to 20lbs but we probably can get to 30-35. I refuse to go with zero comforts at all, and some of the ultra light folks are pushing comfort & safety aside.

Good evening ladies,

At lunch today was Barre Fix. We scheduled Plyo but one of the ladies really wasn't feeling it. It happens we all have been there. Tonight I did Cathe's new Live workout from this morning "low impact cardio strength with step". Al was in this one(he was in Xtrain) and is actually in several of them. Love seeing him working out. He always gives his all.

Valerie...wow a bat in your house! Good thing it just flew out the door when it did. Funny about the cat!!!! DH ordered a new golf bag today.

Deb...hope your hand is better. This year we too had some carpenter ants and like you found them in the kitchen. On the counter tops actually. Completely grossed me out! I bought from home depot Ortho Home Defense and sprayed the heck around the foundation of the house. That was a couple of weeks ago and so far so good. Haven't seen any. Our VP of Construction recommended the product. Love the tree idea!! I bought the dvd's and downloads. I should have just bought the downloads. Not sure what I was thinking. I think the excitement of them just got to me!!

Lynda..I agree with Valerie about how mice would be a problem in a farm setting. Very happy I received more hours. I have been so overwhelmed!

Josie...I forgot you were going to Greece. I have never been and can't wait to see pictures. How has your knee been running? I think it was your knee that was bothering you last year.

Hi to Judy and Dawn!

Good morning & Happy Friday!

Good news is, no fracture, or torn ligaments in my hand...just a bruised bone which has swelled I guess. I have a script for some PT to get it moving again (hopefully). It seems like a lot of us are getting PT lately.

Josie, that is weird that we both got hurt right after retirement.

Lynda, How is your FIL doing? Did your MIL get someone in to help? yes the book What Alice Forgot is not about Alzheimer's. I did real the other one, (The Husband's Secret) and liked it.

Valerie, we have had 4 bats in our house, and it was exactly as you described it. Dogs, however did not even wake up. I heard/felt a "swishing" of air, and that is what it was. Ugh...hate them. We did the same, get the dogs in a closed room, close off as many doors as you can and keep pushing it towards an open door. We have never figured out how they got in either. I have picked up Kind bars and do like them a lot. Especially for the very low sugar content. I wish they didn't have soy in them. The one I like has soy lecithin. I looked it up and it is used to hold things together. I guess the little bit is ok, and I only eat them for a snack when there is no way to have anything else.

Lori, thanks for the name of that product, I will use if nothing else works....worry about the dogs and that stuff around . On Pinterest, they had some pins about using a mix of dishsoap and water, spray around the base of countertops and woodwork, anywhere you see them and it seems to be helping. Also vinegar in a mix works. Are you still using the 21DF containers etc? Your workouts with the ladies are amazing!

Hi to Dawn, Judy,

Take care,

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, Judy, and Dawn--

This morning I did premix #7 on the legs with contrast blasts. It includes abs 1 (46:37). The blasts are easy to modify on this one for me.

Deb, what kind of PT do you do for a bruised bone? I'm glad it's nothing serious. No carpenter ants around, but I will keep my eyes open.

Valerie, that sounds like a wild night! We have a lot of bats too, but I really like them because they go after the mosquitoes. Of course, we have never had one in the house. That would totally freak me out.

Lori, I like Al too. Some of the men in STS I did not care for that much, especially if their form was downright bad.

I think I will try to see Spy this weekend. I love Melissa McCarthy.

Have a great weekend everyone!

I thought I posted an update a couple of days ago, but it's not here. Maybe I just imagined that I did. :)
Today was Hard Strikes. I don't have the gloves that Cathe and crew do, and I'm trying to not buy any more gear that I don't have space for, so I used 1-pound plates. It just gave the workout a little extra oomph that I'll probably feel in my shoulders tomorrow.

Valerie - I can't imagine having a bat in the house! It makes me think of all those old horror moview that were in black and white. It also made me think of an episode of "The Office" where a bat flew into the office!

Valerie and Lynda - I want to watch "Still Alice" too. It's timely since my mother-in-law who just passed away suffered from Alzheimer's. I heard someone say that it's a disease that's harder on the family than the sufferer, but I don't entirely agree with that. It's a very difficult thing to watch someone deal with.

Lori - I'm so sorry about the loss of your cousin's son. It's sad when someone so young dies. I like Al in XTrain, because he's really into the workout. The other guy, Greg, is just phoning it in. I heard that he was sick during filming, but I don't want to look at his poor form so I don't watch him.

Josie - How exciting to go to Greece! I've seen pictures, and it looks beautiful!

Hi to Deb and Judy!

Dawn, that is totally it about Greg... phoning it in. I don't like to watch him because he's sloppy. I like Al too. he's in one of the spin workouts too, and does great while this other lady in the front row is doing all the things cathe is demonstrating NOT to do. think it's Pedal Power.

No more bats. this has happened once or twice before, but not often. . it's easy to yank open a door... for me the door between laundry room and garage... and suck a bat in with the door movement. or have a slider screen open while going in /out. I think they're cool mammals and yes, they eat mosquitos. still not in the house!! I love to watch them early in the morning flying around eating insects. closing off rooms and lighting things up will "herd" them toward the open door. we had one get between the inside window and the screen..so I pushed the screen out to the bushes below, and out he went. I don't want to hurt them, just exit my house ASAP.
one more mouse even after all the cleaning and purging. we will install another door seal, maybe double up on the existing one. they are eating the rubber. we are thinking our mild winter allowed for a bumper crop of mice .

Deb, wire haired fox terriers are such little balls of energy it's hard to imagine them sleeping thru a bat invasion. our kitty is the one I thought would sleep thru it, and he went after it like a maniac. Never would have expected it. Good news about your finger... that it's not a serious injury.

You will find yourself giving yourself memory checks after watching Still Alice. Terrible disease and so hard on everyone, especially the early onset variety. .

we did a nice hike today, 5 hours, 6 or so miles. lots of up and down. might ride tomorrow.

Good evening ladies!

Today at lunch we did Upper Fix. There were only 2 of us working out today. We almost decided not to but we figured what the heck and just went for it. I need to talk the ladies into trying different workouts. I am getting really bored with these. They like them so of course I'll plug along. Next week I am going to see if they will try out Suzanne Bowen. I believe they will love her as much as I do. She is just so friendly and really teaches good form. No workout tonight. My legs are extremely tired from the past few workouts.

Deb...great news on the hand. Will be interesting to see what kind of PT you will be doing. I went for my MRI yesterday but will not receive the results until next week. I doubt very much I need surgery. I am sure it is tendonitis and will need PT. It's funny I think in the last couple of years we have all been in PT at one time or another!

Dawn...I love kickboxing workouts. I usually use boxing gloves but do all my kickboxing on a heavy bag. Most of cathe's workouts work well with one. When I travel I use 1lbs weights so using plates works just as well. Really works your arms when you add in the weights. Yes I also heard Greg had the flu during filming of Xtrain.

Lynda...I love Mellissa McCarthy! DH and I may go see this next Saturday. If it is nice out we may end up golfing. He has been really trying to get me to play so I may give it a whirl. We do have a golf course right here in town. Go figure. We live in a small town yet we have a golf course. He promised me if I play golf he will take me out to eat at my favorite local restaurant. Hmmmm hard to turn up those corn fritters. However, I may not be able because of my shoulder. I am sure he'll still buy me dinner though. :)

Valerie...I have tried Kind bars and I agree they are very good. Received 3 boxes free from one of our vendors at work. We ate them all up.

Hi to Josie and Judy!

Good morning,

I didn't sleep well last night, not sure what it was. Then the dogs got me up at 4:30..ugh. There will be a nap in the future today.

Lynda, the DR said that they will give me some type of exercise to get the movement back. Not sure if I waited too long and it will never be right, but I guess I have to try it.

Dawn, I agree, I like Al in the Cathe workouts. I think he is in the Rippped series right? The only guy. Thanks for bringing up The Office. I think I will go over to Amazon Prime and see if they have that for free.

Valerie, as for bats, they give me the creeps, but I would not want to kill one. Then we would have to figure out what to do with it. I think, at least here, you have to call someone, so they can test it? Can you spray the rubber seal with something that they would really not like? I found on line that dish detergent and water is an a natural type ant repellent, it also kills them instantly! Since I sprayed all the baseboards and the bottom of door frames I have only seen 2 ants. None yesterday...Success!

Lori, not sure about how much equipment you have at the office, but what about getting them to do Rw/HIIT? Those are short, like the 21 DF workouts. I hate to admit this, but I am getting bored with STS. I took a week off, and now and almost dreading going back to it. I had only started Meso 2.

Hi to Josie & Judy,

Agility class this morning, and maybe yard work, or better yet, a nap!

Have a great weekend.

Deb we will continue to try physically blocking them. they are eating whatever the synthetic compound those door seals are made from. they ate plastic ant traps plus the bait inside so I can't imagine what they wouldn't like! we had a mouse free morning today... the big deal with bats is they can carry rabies. important not to handle one or have other close contact because no way to tell if the bat is infected especially if it flies away.

thought we 'd ride today but we're both feeling tired. will do a garden day and ride tomorrow. we are having lovely weather mid 70's clear low humidity. Northwest summers can be lovely. we are more concerned about needing rain. we are in a bit of a drought here after the low snowpack and fire danger can be high because there's a lot of fuel to burn.

Good evening ladies!

Today I did Cathe's live class from this Thursday. When I did it on Thursday I did not give it my all so today I did and thought it was great. The first part reminded me of her low impact series, specifically Athletic Training. 2nd half was weights. Great workout. I then took Chester and Nilla for a nice walk. Well Chester walked and I carried Nilla for pretty much most of the way. She was very content to be in my arms. :)

Valerie..we have been having nice weather too. Yeah! Enjoy your ride tomorrow!

Deb...we have quite the collection of dumbells going up to 15lbs and we have bands. I thought of RWH but thought it still may be a little to hard for them. Other than 21d some had never worked out in their lives. They are doing great though. Cathe's new series will be perfect for them. I think I am going to look at Jessica Smith as she has some nice intermediate workouts. They like weight workouts a lot. The 21d cardio workouts are too much for them yet they like the plyo!!! Go figure!!! I may try Travel Fit. Will need to shorten it a bit on the WB.

Have a great weekend all!
