Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 6/25/2023

This morning I did Jane Adams Gentle Yoga Morning Energy practice for 18 minutes.

Judy, thanks for starting us off this week.

Valerie, nice job with Stacked Sets Upper Body, XTrain Abs, curls and stretches. I use the barbell for deadlifts and plié squats, but not many other exercises. I never bought an E Z curl bar although I considered doing so.

Cathy, great job with Upper Body 1. I’m sure that the new bars are better for the pull ups and chin ups. I am always hungry after a good strength training workout. I plan a mid morning snack with some type of protein, carbohydrate, and healthy fat. Lately it’s been Dave’s bread, two teaspoons of almond butter, and a small banana.

Diane Sue, great job with Raw Box for your Waistline, STS 2.0 Standing Abs Metabolic Core +Floor, and Mobility 2. So far that’s my favorite Ab workout from the series. I went out to clean the grill a bit this morning and it was already hot and very humid.

Have a wonderful day everyone.

This morning I did Boxing Hiit Express, STS 2.0 Total Body Stretch and STS 2.0 Standing Abs Metabolic Core + Floor. I agree that's my favorite of the core workouts.

Carolyn great job keeping the yoga going.

Diane Sue nice job with Raw Box for your waistline and metabolic core warm up + core floor and Mobility 2.

Valerie great job with Stacked upper body again today. Makes sense that riding puts less pressure on your low back than walking does. I hope that you were able to get a good ride in this morning.

although its sunny and clear now, earlier it was gray and drizzling so we didn't ride. I'm having a lot of trouble with mtivation when I am aching all the time. the discomfort is getting worse. I bought two different back braces and they help a little but not as much as I would like. doing garden work today. I increased weights and reps yesterday and got my arms and shoulders a little sore.

No workout today. I went out this afternoon an trimmed off dead roses, dead headed petunias and pruned some things. I was pouring sweat when I came back in. I went to church this morning so that is why this afternoon. It is 91 outside right now.

Judy, thanks for getting us started.

Valerie, I am sorry the discomfort is getting worse. I hope the gardening does make things worse.

Carolyn, I think that is my favorite abs workout too. Excellent job getting in morning energy today.

Cathy, nice work on Box Hiit HIIT total body

Yesterday I did a 30 minute Peloton ride after work. This morning I did a 30 minute run/walk and this afternoon I did Fit Legs Live. We are under a tornado watch for tonight. Looks like we might have some bad storms.

Carolyn-Great job with Jane Adams Gentle Yoga Morning Energy practice. It has been very hot and humid here the past couple of days too.

Cathy-Great job with Boxing Hiit Express, STS 2.0 Total Body Stretch and STS 2.0 Standing Abs Metabolic Core + Floor. I like that combination!

Valerie-I am so sorry about your discomfort. I hope the braces will start to help a little more.

Diane Sue-Gardening can be quite a workout, especially when it's that hot out.

This morning I did STS 2.0 Lower Body 1 again. I did an express premix with two sets. My time was 49 minutes with 283 calories burned. My average heart rate was 110 and maximum heart rate was 140. I had planned to do the Ab workout, but my daughter called and I stopped to talk to her.

Cathy, great job with Boxing HiiT Express, STS 2.0 Total Body Stretch, and Standing Abs Metabolic Core + Floor.

Valerie, I’m sorry that you weren’t able to ride yesterday. At least the brace helps a little.

Diane Sue, good job getting the gardening done after church.

Judy, great job with Peloton ride, 30 minute walk/run, and Fit Legs Live. I hope that your weather wasn’t too bad yesterday. We had storms and very high wind gusts late in the day. Our power was off from 6:30 pm to 12:30 am.

Have a good day everyone.

no drizzle this morning so we rode a 15 miler early before it got busy. an hour and 15 minutes. riding doesn't bother me compared to standing and walking. I have an appt for the imaging I need, but its 7/19. hoping to get an earlier slot so things can move forward. nothing can be decided until we get imaging results. there are some less extensive procedures that might be helpful so I'm not committed to anything. I'm hoping a lesser procedure will improve things enough. I don't expect anyone to restore me to my 20's although that would be nice.

carolyn that's rough this time of year. we get most of our windstorms and power outs in winter when its cool or cold. not everyone would agree but losing refrigeration and air conditioning in summer is tough!. read an article this morning about how difficult weather has been on the georgia peach crop. we are getting great peaches from CA already. WA peaches won't arrive for a month yet. Judy hope you got through without any severe weather.

Today I did STS 2.0 Lower Body 2, 56 minutes, 137 calories, 98/131 heart rate. I also did 2.0 mat yoga 23 minutes, 33 calories. Total time 79 minutes, 170 calories. I lowered the calf raises this time because my right leg is off or something. It is near impossible to balance and raise up into a calf raise. My whole leg shakes. This has been a problem with even the quad move that Cathe does in lower one without weight using the stability ball, but that leg was torture getting off the floor. After the workout I tried to hold something and work on that leg with some calves barefoot and no weight. It did not used to be like that.

Well my day was not as planned. I'd decided to just do some stretching on my own and then go walk at the zoo. My umbrella and I walked the first 40 minutes in the rain, which was fine since walking is my main point of going. Get home and get a message from Derek that he has a flat. Since he sometimes doesn't get out till 5 dealing and dealing with it would have made him really late getting home, I went back down and dealt with it. Ended up having it towed to Discount Tire and left it there and went back for him. It was a day when he didn't get out till almost 5. When we got home I had a text that it was done, which means they were able to fix it! No new tire needed. So, he and I will be getting up early and leaving here at 7:15 to get there in time for him to get the car and go to work, but the alternative would be for me to take him to work an then go again to pick him up after work. So, I'll be setting up my workout tonight and doing it when I get back here in the morning. I just set up the spreadsheets and I'll be previewing it in a bit to decide my start weights. On the plus side we had actual rain today. I don't know that we got as much here as the zoo did, but more than we've gotten in a long time.

Valerie that's great that you were able to get a ride in this morning. I'm sorry your discomfort is getting worse.

Judy nice job with the 30 minute Peloton ride, run/walk and Fit Legs Live. Did you get storms last night? We didn't here.

Carolyn great job with STS 2.0 Lower Body 1. Sorry to hear about your power outage.

Diane Sue great job with STS 2.0 Lower Body 2. Sorry to hear about you leg issue, I hope you figure it out.

Today I did a 45 minute Peloton ride, 10 minutes of ab work and 45 minutes of Yin Yoga. There are numerous power outages all around us from the storms last night. We were very lucky and did not lose power this time.

Carolyn- Great job with STS 2.0 Lower Body 1 Express Premix. I’m sorry that your power was out but I’m glad it wasn’t for too long.

Valerie-Great job with the bike ride this morning. I hope you can get an earlier slot for your imaging.

Diane Sue-Great job with STS 2.0 Lower Body 2 and Mat Yoga. I’m sorry about your leg issue.

Cathy-Great job getting a walk in with it raining. We did get storms last night but they weren’t as bad as I expected.

The last storm here had high winds and our fenced area we put our trashcans in gate came open in the wind and bent the hinges and pulled it most of the way off. My husband just leaned it up against the fence wall till he can get out and try to repair it or remove it completely. It would still have 3 sides to keep the cans hidden from the street. I was lucky I had ran out when the warning hit and put the shade all of the way up. I was thinking about it and a few years ago workouts that had the side plank holding the top leg up was impossible on this side. I could not plank and do that. I had to have a knee on the floor. I think things are really off and aging and arthritis is making it worse. This is the same side that the knee stands up when trying to sit cross legged.

Judy, nice work on the Peloton ride and 10 minutes of ab work and 45 minutes of Yin Yoga. I am glad that you did not lose power. The last storm had high winds and our fenced area we put our trashcans in gate came open in the wind and bent the hinges and pulled it most of the way off. My husband just leaned it up against the fence wall till he can get out and try to repair it or remove it completely. It would still have 3 sides to keep the cans hidden from the street. I was lucky I had ran out when the warning hit and put the shade all of the way up. I have always been off on the one side, but not where I couldn't do a single leg calf raise, I had to keep one toe on the floor of the other foot and hold onto something while my leg shook.

Valerie, I am glad you got a ride in today. I hope you can fill an earlier spot if someone cancels appointments. I think it is easier to bundle up than sit in a still steaming house without power. I did that once and would take a cold bath and still be wet as it was very hot and humid. That gets old quick. I appreciate having electricity.

Carolyn, great job with STS 2.0 Lower Body 1 today. Talking to your daughter is much more pleasant than doing abs :) I keep hearing about storms and tornadoes. I am sorry that you lost power for quite a while.
Usually after June is over we seem to not have so many tornados and severe storms. I have not had to water much so far.

Cathy, it looks like another day of craziness. It is nice that you got your walk in the rain in. I do hate when things like that happen unexpectedly. It will probably be fine for you tomorrow since you have the workout planned and waiting for you. It is a plus that you had rain. I am not really complaining about all of the rain. I don't have to water and as long as there is no severe weather, I am good with it since last year was the worst drought I have seen in a long time.

Happy to say everything went smoothly this morning. We got there a few minutes before 8 and they actually unlocked the doors early and we were back out the door quickly. Just needed the flat fixed. He was to work about 20 minutes early, but he still needed to finish his breakfast. He's supposed to drive up to Marquette Sunday, and his Dad has offered to switch cars with him if he wants. I told him, I'd take that offer if I was him. DH's car is 9 years newer and has about a third of the mileage. I set up my workout last night, and was able to start shortly after 9 right about the time I usually start weight workouts. Today was Lower Body 2 and I do like that one. After I was done, I looked though the chapters of the bonus and really have no interest in ever adding it.

Judy great job with the 45 minute Peloton ride, abs and yoga. Glad you didn't have to deal with a power outage.

Diane Sue is there some way you could get physical therapy on the leg that is giving you issues?

Hi to Carolyn and Valerie.

This morning I did STS Upper Body 1, express with two sets, which was 61 minutes and 235 calories burned. Then I did STS Chair Yoga for 21 minutes and 28 calories.

Valerie, great job with the 15 mile ride. It’s good that you can ride with less pain. The weather here is not following the usual pattern with timing and types of storms. The power outages are also more frequent. We usually experience them with ice storms and sometimes hurricanes. We don’t know what “normal” is anymore.

Diane Sue, great job with STS Lower Body 2 and Mat Yoga. The seasonal weather patterns seem to be changing for us.

Cathy, great job getting in your walk in the rain and completing Lower Body 2 this morning. I’m glad that you were able to get Derek‘s flat repaired and car picked up quickly.

Judy, great job with your 45 minute Peloton ride, 10 minutes of Ab work, and 45 minutes of Yin Yoga. Did you give up on STS 2.0 completely? I have found that the many options for equipment and positions are helpful. Some things are too much of a risk for injury for me to use the main option presented.

Have a wonderful day everyone.

two medical appts this morning. all reasonably ok. not 25 anymore so you cant expect those numbers, but not bad. a change in meds and another test scheduled. I am so tired of being poked, prodded, and tested.

diane sue you are so right, electricity is important. good to not have it for a short time to appreciate it. I'm able to warm up if the power is out in winter. not so good in summer if its hot. how much time we would spend to be comfortable if we didnt have it?
I'm not understanding the calf raise issue. are you doing one leg at a time? I do these almost every day but do both legs at once in 3 sets of 50. that way all the work can be spread between the two.
my knees don't drop down much when I sit cross legged. my hips have never opened sideways like that. people at yoga classes ( the lotus people!) used to sit like that, even people who were definitely not fit. I decided it was basic hip function. what was easy for some was impossible for others. not a lot to do with flexibility or how much yoga one did. I tried for >10 years and had zero change in hip positions.

This morning I did a 45 minute Peloton ride and this afternoon I did STS 2.0 Standing Abs Metabolic Core Warm Up and Body Parts Triceps Express #2 No Repeats.

Diane Sue-I know what you mean about aging and arthritis making things worse. I’m definitely feeling that in my strength workouts. I go to a chiropractor every 2-3 weeks and that helps with my muscle imbalances and with things being off but I don’t think it really helps much for arthritis. I’ve been taking turmeric and a liquid Glucosamine-Chondroitin-MSM supplement and that seems to be helping some.

Cathy-That’s great that everything went well today. Nice job with Lower Body 2! That does sound like a good idea for Derek to switch cars with your DH.

Carolyn-Great job with STS Upper Body 1, Express Premix and Chair Yoga. I haven’t given up on STS 2.0 but my shoulder issue is really limiting the amount of weight I can do. It is getting better though and decided to try the Triceps premix this afternoon.

Valerie-I’m glad your appointments went ok today. I don’t blame you for being sick of tests and medical appointments.

Today I did STS 2 Upper Body 2, 64 minutes, 149 calories, heart rate 98/131. I followed it with STS 2 chair yoga 21 minutes, 30 calories. Total time 85 minutes, 179 calories. I changed a couple of weight increments, but it was pretty much the same as last time. I used a 30# barbell instead of 25 for the close grip bench press. I always feel fine after the workouts and then a day or two later the doms hit. I was sore when I got up, but now I am fine after the workout and stretch. I bet by Thursday I am really sore again. Legs only hurt after the first total body and now seems to have settled down. Today's workout was the last for me in the 8 week program of phase 2. I will do some cardio and abs tomorrow and decide whether to start Body Parts or work some short premixes in as I do not want to spend a lot of time working out. I need to look at premixes and all of the bonus moves. Now, the only workout I have not done at least once is the Chest workout.

Cathy, I am glad everything went smoothly this morning and you got in STS 2 Lower Body 2. I was onlyy interested in the move with the fabric band and stability ball in the bonuses. I do not like push dips, step ups and having one foot on the step lunge. After everything else I did not feel up to it and for the one move I would have had to drag out the step, ball, and band. I woke up to thunder and rain this morning again, the sun came out this afternoon and it hit 91 degrees.
If I mentioned the problem to a doctor, they might do it. I do not really want to go to physical therapy though. I am going to see what I can find. The left leg is normal and no discomfort or problem other than it is the one that had a torn minescus about 7 years or so ago.

Carolyn, great job on the Upper Body 1 STS 2 and the chair stretch. I like the pace of the chair stretch when I am really sore. These workouts are so long, and even when I think I am prepared and everything set, I end of stopping to change something or move something along with the dog for space. They take me longer than they should. I cannot imagine trying to throw a cardio workout in with the weight workout even if I wanted to. I am liking taking a break from so much cardio.
I remember another time when my children were young us having a drought much like last year. There was no rain most of the summer and when we got some everyone in the apartment complex we lived in at the time went outside to watch the rain come down and some going out and getting wet.
I read a science article about weather patterns and how the changes come at intervals around every 15 years. It was interesting.

Valerie, every time I have an appointment there is some anxiety that they will find something. I guess it is to be expected as we age. I appreciate that I can still move around and do a lot of stuff without problems so am grateful for that. I have my appointment for the lung nodules mid July so the scan for that. August is back to arthritis doctor that may be wanting to change my meds. and decisions there. I originally should have been done with the lung nodule as they had only mentioned one, but the doctor that took over the original doctor's spot said there were more than one to watch and to come back. She left the heart hospital but is the one reading them after they come in and letting me know. I would like to see doctors as little as possible.
It is single leg and the right leg that is my off leg is the one that I was having a hard time even getting my heel off the floor. My whole leg was shaking trying to do it for some reason. I can do them if I am doing both legs at the same time. It did not make that much sense. It was the same thing with the putting a stability ball on my leg and doing lifts the way Cathe does on sts 2 lower. My whole leg shook and my foot could barely come off the floor. It was better the second time though.
I think it is something to do with the hip too. I finally realized no matter how hard I tried I was not going to get into some of those positions. I cannot sit cross legged even with my knee pointing upward for long as my back and inner thighs start hurting. I sit on the high step topper or something that gets me up off the floor a bit. I tried a balance disc for sitting on, but even with little air in it, it is a bit hard to keep still in the position. It makes me work to hard to sit up straight. It was a thought though. I hear instructors saying after a while this will become easy and after years of trying, I think they do not know what they are talking about. Not everyone is the same.

Judy, great choices for your workout today. I think the only thing you can do for arthritis is maybe meds to slow the progression and keeping pain and inflammation down that causes it to worsen. I use Curcumin twice a day, take Move Free advanced, and collagen. I had quit the glucosamine and chondroitin products till I saw how much the product I got for my dog helped her. I got her something with glucosamine, Chondroitin, fish oil, and curcumin in it and after a week she stopped having a hard time getting up and slowly limping across the room. This was after playing hard with my son's pup when we were away on our 50th. I thought maybe I need to go back to using it. I have never been to a chiropractor. I think I would worry a bit about them trying to move joints around that had arthritis. I have read things about bone fragments getting caught in joints and stuff. My parents used to go to one quite a lot though.

This morning I did STS 2 Upper Body 2. Made a few adjustments along the way. The barbell curls when she leans a bit forward are not for me. Seems to pull on my low back, so I did regular curls. And I have to say that the dips using the dip bars and fabric band are a lot harder than they look. Hoping I wake up early enough tomorrow so I can do a short cardio and mobility before shopping.

Carolyn great job with STS 2 Upper Body 1, express with two sets and Chair Yoga. I agree that having them using so many options in STS 2 is very helpful. In the past, she might say you could do an alternative but seeing someone actually do it is beneficial.

Valerie I do think that hip flexibility really varies with people. Had a friend when I was cheering who could do the Chinese splits (legs straight out to the side), I could do splits in both directions, but even though I was really flexible, I could never do those. And her build really would not have made anyone think she could do them. I can still do lotus, but I try not to do things that put my right knee in that type of position. Glad your appointments went okay.

Judy great job with the 45 minute Peloton ride, STS 2.0 Standing Abs Metabolic Core Warm Up and Body Parts Triceps Express #2 No Repeats.

Diane Sue nice job with STS 2 Upper Body 2. Yeah I felt like the amount of work setting up for that bonus would be a pain, and when added to the fact they mostly were moves I don't care for, it sealed the deal on that one.

This morning I did KCM’s Cardio Quick Fix workout one for 25 minutes and 177 calories burned. My average heart rate was 131 and maximum heart rate was 150.

Valerie, I’m glad that your medical appointments went well. I can’t sit cross legged either. My legs don’t go down very far, but I don’t worry about it. I go as far as is comfortable for my body. Sometimes I stand or sit in a chair instead of trying to hold that position for a long time.

Judy, great job with the 45 minute Peloton ride, Standing Abs and Metabolic Core Warmup, and Body Parts Triceps express. The express premixes with lighter weights are a good way to ease back into STS 2.0.

Diane Sue, great job with STS 2.0 Upper Body 2 and Chair Yoga.

Cathy, great job with STS 2.0 Upper Body 2.

Have a wonderful day everyone.

we rode the tree farm this morning, an hour and a half about 6.5 miles. unfortunately some jerks partied up at the top view area and left all their debris there. folding tables, hand truck, cans and bottles. we decided its best to leave everything as we found it, take pics, and report it to management. this kind of obnoxious behavior will get us all banned! so sad... irresponsible people ruin it for all. on bicycles there is no way we could have carried any out. the administration can to drive fairly close and clean it. I posted the pics on the facebook page. disgusting.

hips... even if I cross one leg over the other while sitting, my knee stays up. so many people drop that leg down to level or even lower. we are put together differently. yoga I failed lotus, firelog, all positions needing that outward rotation.
you so right cathe, a lot of people aren't yoga masters but sit like that normally. I dont have hip arthritis but no way.

diane sue I know the feeling... you go in dreading testing because even if the main purpose is negative, sometimes there are "accidental findings" that then need following up on. I recently had a CT scan for my back and there showed up a cyst. had to get another scan to make sure it wasnt "something", which it wasnt.

you would not think I live in a climate with many lizards but we have alligator lizards. they arent very big but are fast and cruise around in the green areas. yesterday I was getting out the vacuum cleaner and a lizard on the floor! they are as big as a ball point pen so not a gila monster size but I was able to catch him with a piece of cardboard and slide him into a paper bag and outside onto the deck. he probably got in thru the garage. it was a baby one and didnt know to be afraid of me. Ive read they will bit but all went ok and everyone came out with a win.
