Good morning!

The movie was great, too bad the dog wasn't in it as much as we would have liked. I have not seen any other Wes Anderson movies, but I hear that it is typical of his style. Kind of strange, but not. You have to see it to understand. Bella ( our friend's dog) does a great job with what she has to do, From articles we have read, she impressed Wes Anderson. What was surprising was that the dog doesn't even get in the credits. Our friend was disappointed about that but learned that animals in films are only considered part of the props! I guess in a movie where they are the star it would be different.

Valerie, I'm surprised it is already available on netflix, since it is still up at the theaters. I would love to lose 15 pounds or better yet, 20. I am not in a good frame of mind for that. I need to get into that frame of mind.

I hope everyone is having a good weekend,

take care,

Deb if you find theat frame of mind let me know how you did it. I need it to start exercising again.

For diet my fitbit tells me how many calories I am using which is a sad 1700 calories a day and I have been eating about 1450 calories a day. That gets me a loss of 1/2lb per week. I actually try to eat 1200 calorie most days so I can eat out a couple of times a week so the average calories eaten is 1450. It's worked for the last 6 weeks. Can't wait until Dec 2013 when I reach goal.

Deb, it's not on netflix yet, just on queue. netflix runs a list of available movies in order of preference. another group comes up to the first list when available. this one is on the wait list. there's always a lot of press when a movie goes to theater and not a big to-do when it goes to DVD. eventually most go to DVD and then netflix moves them upautomatically. most movies get DVD release dates but sometimes there is some behind the scenes issues so it's not predictable. too bad the doggie didn't get better billing!

out to dinner last night. pizza. was Ok. I didn't care much for it, good flavor soggy crust. every time I do a visit to the 'big city" I'm reminded of how much I don't like it there anymore. too crowded, I get sick of people and their crap in about 30 seconds.
cousin's wife works at an incredible place called PATH. funded greatly by the Gates fortune. offices worldwide and dedicated to health care ( like malaria) and related issues for third word people. fascinating place to visit. she gave us a tour. amazing artwork from countries served. looks like a lovely thoughtful place to work.

I wore a pair of jeans I've never been able to get in to. I got them a couple years ago at a low weight point but when I went to wear them later, they were too tight. wore them last night comfortably. I always need a belt because current jean styling with low waists simply will not stay up on me. my middle is small compared to my hips, not apparently the ideal form these days for jeans buying. stuck pretty closely to the diet. had a small taste of tiramisu, and split a small scoop of gelato with DH. I need to learn to make that! tiramisu was good too.

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, and Valerie--

This morning I did STS Total Body (66 min.).

The party was fun last night. Outside on a beautiful estate. They did a pig roast, but the pork was so late in being done that I filled up on the salads, which were really yummy.

Deb, Wes Anderson is just okay for me--quirky and a bit too precious for my taste. Once again, I seem to be immune to "charming" films. Too bad about there not being enough of your favorite actor, the dog. Have you ever seen A Dog Year, based on Jon Katz's book about the abused border collie Devin he takes in? It's really quite good and the dog has such a beautiful face. Jeff Bridges is good in it as well. Uggie in the Artist gets billing in the credits for sure.

It sounds like both of you (Joan and Valerie) are going about the dieting thing in the right way--just altering your diet modestly for slow loss. There was a thread over on the Open Forum on the "best diet" about a test of a bunch of people doing one of the "fad" diets. There wasn't really any difference in terms of weight loss. The real difference was between people who managed to stay on their diet after 6 mos. It's really just calories in, calories burned, not some formula for eating.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend everyone!

I don't get it... I got another double post! crazy.

We were watching Taxi Driver, part of it, on cable. 1976. Lynda, do you know why the sound track is so loud & obtrusive in old movies? Was that the standard back then and we've gotten used to quieter less pushy background music, or does something happen when switching the format to digital? you know movies better than anyone else I know.

I have made some significant diet changes but not a fad diet. I can't tolerate, even a little, high pro/low carb and have no desire to remove entire food groups. mostly "vegie" works well for me, so I reduce snacks, wine, desserts. lighten up salads. when we do long intense days I watch my snacks. when you hike 7 hours there's no way 1500 cal is enough. You are starving at night AND the next day and feel too wiped out to do anything, defeating the goal of working out daily. I don't need 4000 cal either but adequate cals .... so I burn more than I ate but not "hugely".
I'm making sure I get in a workout ( of some sort) every day. I'm calling a heavy garden day a workout. I don't count calories. lots of fruit and vegies without a lot of fats or sugars added. I will get weighed this thursday and will go from that start point, because I know I've lost some already due to the old jeans fitting. this was not water weight loss.
Joan, get back on the exercise bandwagon, walking is fine, don't think it's nothing! I have a neighbor who lost something like 50 lbs by walking every day.

Good morning,

I started week one again of the Couch to 5K. I figure if I do each week twice, it will take away the dread factor. It seemed to work because today was a lot easier than last week's first one.

Joan, walking is a great way to burn calories. What do you do while you are on the treadmill? watch TV. or listen to music etc? if you have an mp3 player, why not try a Cardio Coach? They are great for making the time go by and it is a little HIIT which gives a better calorie burn. Simple to download, and to use. I would recommend starting with Cardio Coach #1 revised. It's only 35 minutes including warm up and cool down. A half a pound a week is not bad, if it stays off. That's my problem, I keep losing the same half pound each week. :)

Valerie, nothing better than fitting in clothes you tossed aside thinking you would never wear them again! :)

Garance no, have not seen that movie, but love all those Jon Katz books about his dogs, so maybe will rent it. I never knew they did a movie about him. I see you do a variety of workouts, do you have a rotation kind of in mind when you start a week, or just do what you grab and feel like at the moment?

Hi to Josie!

Take care,

For dieting for me, volume is important. I post with some people on WW who are all doing well and that seems to be a big reason..... they can eat their favorite things, lesser quantity or less often, and pretty much unlimited fruit and vegies. they plan to allow for special events or dinners out so stay "on program". none of that giving up and blowing it because you ate one "bad" meal.
I need the volume and I won't give up things like pasta or grains. Maybe there are some vegetarians who can, but I'm not one of them. I need three meals a day. I used to do meal skipping when I was younger but I'd get too hungry in the evening and undermine myself by eating too much later. so I get my oatmeal and fruit in the morning and it's not even a debate.
I've been easing into this for a couple months. finally am feeling results. the jeans were a good test.
I need new jeans regardless. I usually wear L Bean jeans ...mom jeans. they're inexpensive and fit. my thigh/hip area is big compared to my waist. waists got lower but I need space in the thighs so need a belt to keep pants up. I'm not a great shopper, any recommendations on jeans brands? I know from experience that even if I lose weight the problem will persist because my legs will stay big compared to waist. wish it weren't so, but it is.

Hi Ladies,

I will be spinning tonight. I have to get myself back on track. I also want to loose between 15-20 pounds. My co-worker and I are going to join WW in a couple of weeks it is offered here at UCLA.

Valerie, the ride was from San Francisco to LA, so it was north to south. You would love it!

I took my peanuts home on Saturday, so I spent 7 hours on the road and when I got home, my DH wanted to go out dancing. We got home very late and I ended up sleeping until 9:30 and missed my celebratory welcome back home ride.

Hi to Garance, Joan and Deb!

Josie

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, and Valerie--

This morning I did After Burn (54 min.).

Deb, I have pretty much been doing LIS now for almost 6 mos. I did get bored with LIC after I mastered it, and I don't like S & G, and I have been rotating High Reps and STS Total Body with Turbo Barre on Sundays, and started doing the two gym styles for upper body on alternating Wednesdays. Instead of LIC or S & G on Tuesdays, I am now doing Cardio Supersets, which I also do on Thursdays. I consistently do After Burn on Mondays and Athletic Training on Fridays. I am hoping to change things up with Cathe's two new ones and maybe start STS after I come back from vacation.

Valerie, the music soundtrack for Taxi Driver is by Bernard Herrman and this was his last film (he is very famous for his soundtracks on Hitchcock films, especially North by Northwest, Vertigo, which borrows from Wagner's Tristan und Isolde, and Psycho--the violins in the shower sequence?). I do remember when the film was released that a couple critics--John Simon, in particular--were critical of the music in this film as being overbearing, so maybe you are having the same critical reaction. In general, I think the music has just become louder in theaters with Dolby sound. Everybody wants to be John Williams or Jerry Goldsmith these days.

What is everyone reading these days? Any recs??

Good morning,

no workout today, slept in because of getting home late from class last night.

Garance, you must be really wanting the new workouts, just for some variety. Did you ever get a new one from Collage? I remember that you were browsing there for something new. Nothing I am reading right now is worth telling. I would like something new to come along like "The Help". That was a good read. Did you read The Art of Racing in the Rain? I really liked that one too.

Valerie, whatever works is the best diet around, if you can stick to it, that is the best one for you.

Hi to Josie & Joan,

Take care,

Did a ride yesterday, 32 miles. just under 3 hours. It wasn't very warm, no heat and blazing sun but I still felt totally exhausted. I have trouble drinking while riding and need to stop to drink. I think I might have gotten dehydrated although DH was more tired than usual too.
did some garden things later. the broccoli crop didn't do well this year. no large heads. Love homegrown broccoli! I barely eat the store stuff after growing our own. so much more flavorful and tender ...it's like a different vegetable. the side shoots are good and that's what I'm using now but it's a lot of work to snip all those little guys off one by one. my snap peas are just starting. love those. having a strawberry festival too, we get local berries for a month so I indulge. they're wonderful but would not travel well so not a lot of commercial use.

Deb, the fruit & vegies this time of year make dieting easier. I can snack on good fresh things.

Lynda, I seldom go to theaters ...too loud. gives me a headache. older movies...the dialogue is audible, the background is too loud, which then drowns out the dialogue. balance is wrong. maybe it's our TV or the way DH set up the speaker system. newer movies seem balanced OK but older ones, in this case Taxi Driver, wow. just obnoxious.

something from a couple months ago.. self rising flour. I've looked, have not seen it. I've done that before... go on a hunt for an ingredient and then lose or forget what recipe I wanted to use it in. right now I'm looking for farro, an interesting whole grain. I had a bag two years ago and can't find it now. quinoa in various combinations has taken over the shelves.

I'm reading a book on hiking the pacific crest trail by a guy from new zealand. interesting but not a show stopper so far.

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, and Valerie--

This morning I did Cardio Supersets (41 min.).

No, Deb, I have not bought any new dvds. I read over at videofitness that KCM is coming out with some new routines and that Les Mills Body Pump may become available without the barbell. I really am in a rut, but I don't want to give up the fitness gains I've made with LIS and a lot of stuff looks either less challenging or too high impact.

Valerie, I would recommend Lucky Brand jeans. They have some very forgiving (with elastane) bootcuts in a 29.5 inch length for us short people. You can buy them online. I enjoyed Wild immensely, but I'm looking for some good fiction. I just finished Gone Girl, which is really quite enthralling in an insidious way.

Hi to Joan and Josie!

Good morning,

C25k done
running.gif
one more week 1 workout then I have to move to week 2 Yikes!

Valerie, brocoli is my favorite veg. I have never tried growing it so would not know how good it is home grown. I always buy sugar snap peas and put them in my lunch for a snack. Garance got me started with the Lucky Brand jeans, they are really nice. I get the ones with the button front. Not sure why, but since they were the first ones I got, and they were comfortable for me, I ended up getting 2 more pair. I have 3, in 3 different sizes. So when my weight fluctuates, I always have a pair of Lucky jeans to wear. How bad is that? I do the same thing with recipes, go on hunts for ingredients, then forget why.

Garance, yes, KCM has 2 new DVD's that should be up for pre-sale right now. Unless the clips look excellent, I am going to pass on these. I got the last 2 and only do one of them. It has 2 total body weight workouts, lots of pre-mixes so I like that one. The other one is called "Start Here" and is supposed to be for beginners, or someone coming off injury, etc. I have never tried it. They are selling Les Mills Body Pump without the bar etc at Beachbody. I looked at it for a while and would want maybe 4 of the 7 DVD's. I would really like to try one of those, they look like fun. I have Gone Girl on my "get at the library" list. You didn't mention whether you read The Art of Racing in the Rain...one of my favorite all time books.

Time to get ready, will check in later. Take care,

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, and Valerie--

This morning I did Gym Style chest and tris (48 min.).

Deb, I did read The Art of Racing in the Rain. Loved it. Sounds like you are going strong on your running. Wish I could still run, but my knees would talk back.

I had a very hard time getting on this site. Anyone else have trouble? I am wondering if Cathe is about to send out the presale orders. Any news on that?

Yes, I thought the Les Mills looked good because of the music. A lot of money though for some very short workouts. I think I will pass on the KCM, too, and wait to see how my new Cathes are.

My move is almost complete. I am still waiting to hear when they will move my computer.

that's two votes for Lucky jeans, I'll take a look. 29.5 may be a little long but I'll still look. my current jeans are Ok, they fit ... a more updated profile would be good. If the rise comes up enough and narrows at the top I'll be pleased. don't want to wear a belt all the time.

Deb, growing conditions here are different from everyplace else. could not guess if it would work where you live. broccoli is easy to grow (here), & a lot of yield from a few plants from side shoots. at first I thought it was a drawback but when you buy a big head of broccoli you trim it down to cook anyway. I pick a bag of side shoots and it's ready to go. the stems are good too, in contrast to commercial types that are hard and woody.

I found the recipe and the farro. seems like wheat berries to me. not sure it's worth the extra expense. will have it in a salad today. glad I'm not the only one who searches and searches for a new ingredient and then can't find what I intended to try it in! Deb, a friend from yoga said farro was like spelt (which I never found) but she knew where to get that too. a co-op not far away.

went off to do a hike this morning but road was still snowed in down low. we started walking up, thinking it was a patch in a shady spot, but no, it was solid in short order. supposed to be warmer today and we should have had snowshoes but didn't bring them. big mistake. we went for a mile or so and realized if it got warm it would be a very very long walk back, as we were starting to break thru the crust already at 8:30. It's affectionately called "post-holing" and gets no recommendation from me. so we are back early & will do yard work or maybe bike. I've found I can ride my mt bike up and down the length of our lot although it's hard. several hundred feet gain on dirt and gravel road/path. short but fun.

Did disk 5 yesterday along with the yoga class in the am. a lot of upper body work these days.

Thursdau

Good morning,

I did a KCM workout this morning. Whew, it's humid here today.

Garance, no issues with the site for me, at least not yet. I think they started getting the orders together, will probably start shipping today. I keep going back to the clips to see how much impact there is. It looks like a lot. But there are a lot of pre-mixes that look like they are less impact.

Valerie, they might have 29's for length for the jeans, not sure. I have to confess, I got mine on Ebay.

Hi to Josie, & Joan,

off for more coffee and to get ready for work. ...one more year...one more year....;)

Deb, I can probably do a 30 inseam but I'm looking at the lucky jeans site and the pictures don"t match the description. everything looks low rise and tight. do you go by what is described rather than the look on the model?
I've always had the lower hip/ thunder thighs problem. even when I was thinner. pants that are tight there remind me every second.
I don't see any explanation of sizes on their site. I wear a 10 relaxed fit in LL bean jeans. they have a straight leg that's not tight. the pair I have that I first wore last weekend are boot cut with some elastic in the fabric. they're Ok but not very comfortable. I need a wide belt to prevent gaping and dipping too low.

Hi Ladies,

I decided to do the following workouts for the next 12 weeks.

M – PLB
T – Spinning or C25K
W – PUB
Th – Spinning or C25K
F – PLB
S – Spinning or C25K
Su – long bike ride (30-50 miles)

Next week I will be doing the PUB 2 times and so on and once I get to the 5k goal I will probably run on Saturdays and build up the distance.

Valerie, Macy’s is having a sale on Lucky jeans. I don’t know if there is a Macy’s near you, but it would be better if you could try the pants on. I also have the same problem with my jeans that you have.

Hi to Joan, Garance and Deb!

Josie

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, and Valerie--

This morning I did Cardio Supersets (41 min.).

Valerie, I haven't been to the Lucky Brand site recently, but you're probably right that they don't do jeans that hit the waist. I have two pairs of Easy Rider from Lucky Brand, boot cut and button fly and mid-rise--i.e., not their low rise, which I would probably feel uncomfortable in. They usually recommend that you buy a size smaller than what you usually wear because they are stretchy--what I refer to as very forgiving. I guess you could try landsend if you need a high rise and see what they offer.

Sounds like we will be getting some hot weather over the weekend, but not too humid.

Deb, did you watch Dogs in the City last night? That one woman who inflicts her food issues on the poor dog. At least Justin was frank with her and just told her straight out that she was shortening the dog's life.

Hope I get my new Cathes pretty soon.
