Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 6/23

Hello Ladies. Today is my usual rest day for the week. We are still having a lot of rain and thunderstorms so it’s an indoor day here. Have a wonderful afternoon everyone.

Hi again,

Today I did S&S Total Body Giant Sets, 55 minutes, 283 calories. My knee is kind of puffy, not sure if it is from the workout or not. It feels ok, at least for now.

Valerie, I looked up those shows you mentioned on Prime. Only the Handmaids Tale one, which I looked at before and was not too interested, due to the abuse. is free with Prime, the others are there to purchase. Agree on the eye solutions.

Carolyn, I agree, will not be trying anything that is not specific for nasal dryness etc. I may try your method first.

Diane Sue, I have dry eye too, now apparently dry nose...LOL...I never did understand what people did with neti pots. I guess I have a better idea now.

Hi to Judy & Lori,

Take care,

Deb "Dead to me" is Hulu. it is renewed for a second season but don't know when that will happen. it is very clever. I recommended to my neighbor, and she loved it as did DH. all 3 of us can't be wrong. it is a "dark" comedy. not a bunch of fart and sex jokes.
Handmaids is pretty intense, no question. I like it a lot. I never read the book. we are on season 3 but it is being released one episode at a time per week now. pretty sure its Netflix but not positive.
"Path" I have not decided for sure on. it is dragging on and has a "Lost" feel to it. I like character development but not to the point where it feels like padding. the actor from Breaking Bad -Jessie- aaron paul is one of the main people in Path.
Better Call Saul is a prequel to Breaking Bad. a lot of the characters who appear in BB get their beginning story told here, and they are a complex and interesting bunch. we get it on a disc (mail) from Netflix. I'm not sure what network carries it. so many options. hardly anyone has access to everything.

I knew what people do with neti pots but never understood it. once I get water in my nose it stays there. it does not run right out like the pictures. its like water boarding! no way.

major garden day yesterday. a lot of work. will do a upper body weight workout in a few minutes. riding tomorrow for my cardio.

Deb, I hope your knee stay okay. I know when I got the Neti Pot I was surprised water would go in one side and out the other. That just shows how much I know about sinuses. I try to keep my salt low and avoid allergy meds and Advil that makes my dry mouth worse. I think mine along with the dry eyes and throat may go along with the RA and arthritis problems. I have read that Sjogren's can be caused by some immune disorders. It started getting really bad about 6 years ago and so bad I would wake up with my tongue stuck to the top of my mouth. I am always happy if I manage to sleep all night without waking up with my mouth and throat so dry and having to drink so much water. Those dry mouth sprays, toothpastes, and tablets do not really help much.

Judy, I may try those eye drops. I don't think that I have ever used that brand before.

Carolyn, we had a down pour this morning here. I thought it might start again this afternoon as it got dark and cloudy, but it went on by us. I hope you enjoyed your rest day.

I did Lite stacked upper body as planned along with the abs.

DH uses some eye drops, he has some kind of ongoing corneal erosion/abrasion. it is OTC product but there are so many to choose from. it helps him a lot. Judy, I think what he uses is like systane but a different brand.

I am lucky and so far no dry problems as long as I hydrate thoroughly. I used to have contact lens problems but I let myself get dry sometimes because having to pee all the time was so difficult when traveling all the time. I am still able to wear contacts without any extras, just regular disinfecting solution.

My eye doctor suggested Systane a few years ago when I started having problems with dry eyes. I can't believe how much difference it makes. If I run out for a couple of days I really notice it.

This morning I did Kelly Coffey dvd Athletic Conditioning vol. 1, cardio, 36 minutes, heart rate 134 average, max 166, 2,532 steps, met 7.5, 219, followed by Raw large muscle finisher, 22 minutes, met 6.0, 109 calories, 434 steps, heart rate average 100, max 119. I also did Cathe Lite Cardio Party Calorie Crush, 15 minutes, heart rate average 152, max 181, 1,500 steps, met 9.0, 119 calories and finished off with Kelly's Athletic Conditioning vol. 1 workout 2 stretch, 24 minutes, met 2.5, 56 calories, 112 steps. Total time was 97 minutes, 503 calories, 4,578 steps.

Today I did Party Rockin Step 2 for 46 minutes and 337 calories burned. Average heart rate was 130 and maximum heart rate was 164. I didn’t do the finished product.

Judy, my eye doctor also recommended Systane for dry eyes. I haven’t tried it yet because I hate eye drops!

Diane Sue, that is quite a workout that you did today! Great job! My mouth gets very dry during the night. I often wake up with my tongue stuck to the roof of my mouth, too. I take a few sips of water every time that I wake up.

Hello to Deb, Valerie, and Lori.

Good afternoon,

Today I did Walk Fit on the treadmill, 32 minutes, 204 calories.

Valerie, I checked our library to see if they had the DVD's for these shows. I was able to request season 1 ( first 2 disks) of Better Call Saul from the library. They have 4 seasons I believe. I would have done more but they are only for 7 days, and I didn't want to be under too much pressure to watch. It lets me have something to look forward to as well. :)

Judy, thanks for the tip on the eye drops. I may get some and try it. The optometrist gave me some stuff, but I did not see much difference with it.

Diane Sue, that sounds terrible, waking up so dry. John has a similar problem, he wakes up coughing,, so always keeps a water bottle next to the bed.

Hi to Carolyn, & Lori,

Take care,

Deb "Saul" is the story before Breaking Bad. there is some over lap in characters but I think each series can be viewed by itself. we have seen BB twice and like "Saul" as much as we liked BB. we saw the beginning seasons of "saul" at least 2 yrs ago now, and this latest season has not been out for very long. its hard to keep track of where you see things, and where they are available. Hope you & John enjoy it. I don't know what network carried Saul. we did not find it on either Netflix or Hulu.

so funny what pops up in series. in "Path" there are appearances by 2 older actresses. Kathleen Turner, who looks like absolute hell, and Melanie Griffith, who looks like she's had too much work done. Must be difficult getting older when your looks are your livelihood.

I keep a water bottle by the bed at night, and wear a mouth guard. I also have to get up and pee. as long as I'm well hydrated, everything still works OK. I drink a full bottle of water before I get up in the morning, about 25 oz. chug a lug.

there is an incredible number of choices for OTC eye drops. I take a picture of the label. they all look and sound the same. best know exactly what you want.

we mt biked this morning, 2 hours about 8 miles. it is a great workout. nothing like uphill riding to get your legs working., and breathing hard. I keep forgetting to wear a HRM to see how hard I am working. this is much harder than road biking. DH is so proud of me for being able to do it at all, a little slower than he does it but not bad for an old lady. I'm proud of myself too. 5 yrs ago I would not have believed I could do this. a better bike helped ( traded in the old original bikes) but going regularly is key for me.

Good morning,

Today I did S&S PHA Training, 50 minutes, 281 calories.

Valerie, Wait!! YOU ARE NOT an OLD LADY! Some women 20 or more years younger than you would not be able to do what you do. I am sure I will like this series. After watching all the seasons of that, I will probably get BB from the library as well, since it is not available on Prime either.

Hi to all,

Take care,

My workout today was Butts and Guts. I did a premix of Standing Glutes plus Abs for 53 minutes and 259 calories burned. Average heart rate was 114 and maximum heart rate was 155. Some of the ab exercises are slightly different from usual and I really feel it!

Deb, great job with Strong and Sweaty PHA Training today and yesterday’s treadmill walk.

Valerie, it’s wonderful that your fitness has increased so much for the biking. Your hard work is evident. Congratulations.

Hello to Diane Sue, Judy, and Lori. Have a wonderful day everyone.

Today I did Coffey Fit Raw Interval's 2 Circuit, 39 minutes, heart rate average 131, max 164, met 8.1, 216 calories, 1,919 steps. That is all I had time for this morning. I have always liked this one because it is light weights up to 7# and done on the floor, no step or other gadgets. For some reason I am so tired today. I woke up an hour early and just kept hoping to go back to sleep, but no such luck. I watched younger grandchildren this morning. I am having a hard time driving myself to do anything this afternoon.

Valerie, I look up items on Amazon an pull up the labels so I can look at the ingredient lists even if I am planning on buying the product at a local store. I go through an amazingly large amount of water each day along with my iced coffee, coffee (decaf) and collagen drink, Kombucha tea, etc.. One of my friends at game day commented on my trips to the restroom and said that is great my kidneys probably love me. Oh, well, it is just what it is. I am not one of those people that have to keep track of my water to make sure I get enough.
I feel sorry for the older actresses that probably spend so much time under the knife and getting treatments to try to look good. It must be terribly stressful. You are amazing with your rides, hikes, and skiing. I always figure we are as old as we feel. You are definitely not old.

Deb, I rarely look at the dvds at the library. I probably should. They have a fairly large section. I have picked up a few workouts there off and on. Any good ones I seem to already have. But, tv series and movies I have not checked on. The dry mouth makes the cough worse for me too. Nice work on Strong and Sweaty.

Carolyn, nice work on Butts and Guts and Party Rock'n step. I am sorry you have the misery of the dry mouth too. I guess now I know I am not alone.

I need to drag myself out of my chair and do something. This is one of those days where I just sort of feel kind of melancholy. I need to go find something to cheer me up ;)

Old lady checking in! Ha! I am old in years, but I don't feel or act old...... IMHO. Thank you all for the positive thoughts.
today was a good hike, 6 or 7 miles, good amount of elevation gain. lots of snow up there yet, making for interesting footing in places. falling thru the snow to the ground with one foot is a shock to the system! long drive there and back. this is not a high elevation hike, but plenty of snow still there. patchy so lots of clear trail too. beautiful day, sunny, pleasantly cool and breezy. not too many people there because we were early. loads of flowers. Doing stuff like this keeps the juices flowing.
Diane sue, some times your body is telling you to take a rest day. Take one or two. you do such seriously hard workouts all the time, sometimes you need a break. It gets harder to sleep soundly and without interruptions. its not like when I was young and could sleep for 12 hours if I was really tired. now I'm lucky to get 4 hours straight but I usually can get back to sleep for another stretch.
Carolyn, butts and Gutts was a hard one! congratulations!
Deb, I cant remember where we got BB. we watched it once, and then a few years later, re-watched it from the beginning. no series is reliably available in any one place. I really enjoyed both BB and Saul. . some popular series I can't stand, so its all individual. I got thru one season of "This is us" without upchucking, but barely. a lot of people LOVE it. so there you go...… no predicting who will enjoy what. .

Good morning,

Today I did a Cardio Coach treadmill walk, 30 minutes, 193 calories.

Carolyn, good job on Butts & Guts!

Diane Sue, hope you are feeling better and have more energy. I have days like that too. I just want to stay on the couch and read. That is great, the amount of water/liquid you drink. Are you signed up for the online library site in your area? Makes it so easy to see if they have what you are looking for, and if it is in a different library location, have it sent to your local one.

Valerie, Nice hike! I agree on the differences in what people like. I started watching This is Us on my iPad with a free trial of the CBS ( I think) streaming. They have the first 3 episodes free, then you had to pay. By that time, I knew I would not pay for that, and figured it would be in the library at some point if I decided to continue. Like some other shows, they have a cult following.

Hi to Judy and Lori

Take care,

This morning I did Kelly Coffey's Shape Up cardio only mix, 32 minutes, 217 calories, met 8.3, 2,428 steps, heart rate 143 average, 176 max. That one is a tough one, each movement is done tabata style 8 rounds 20 on 10 off. Those box jumps were tough. I then did Coffey Fit Raw Bands and Barre 36 minutes, heart rate 104 average, 146 max, met 5.5, 139 calories, 915 steps. Total time was 68 minutes, 356 calories, 3,343 steps. I have my grandson 7 here today and my daughter and her two younger children are coming after their dental appointment to go swimming.

Valerie, I know I should take more breaks than I do. I used to rely on vacations, but we have not been able to go on a vacation in years. You are lucky you can go back to sleep. I will try lying down for a bit of a cat nap and most of the time, I just lay there and read and never fall asleep. I need to get in bed early and plan on extra time awake so that I get a decent amount. If I go to bed too late, my husband gets up to workout at 5:30 and I have to get up. Then, it seems like I have so much to do, for someone who is basically free. I was totally feeling overwhelmed yesterday as I worked on my calendar through September. Probably being so tired did not help. I called to get my physical and mammogram appointments put in between other activities or timed to still do the other things I need to do. I also have an appointment for my arthritis doctor next month. 3 Mondays in a row I have appointments in July. Dentist in August. My calendar is so full. I feel better when I am rested and not feeling rushed all of the time to get things accomplished. One of the reasons I have chosen to follow Kelly's challenge is if I don't have a lot of time, I can do just one of the workouts which are mostly not long. Like yesterday. That way I do not have to stand around and think what to do. Plus, most are great, but not killer unless I try to up the ante a bit on them.
Great job on the hike, that was a long one. It is much nicer when you have the area to yourself. My older daughter and her family just made a trip up Pikes Peak. There was snow there which is the usual.
We recently watched some episodes from Forever and I do not like it. I told my husband that it was a depressing idea of the afterlife. Not a good show to me at all.

Deb, I get books from the library digitally and I place holds on books and dvds and pick them up. It asks where you want the material sent, which I choose my library around the corner. It takes a bit longer for the stuff to arrive if it is not available at my library.

I am taking a day off today. DH decided to road ride but I have a lot of little stuff to catch up on and will do upper body weights later today. I needed a half an ambien last night, could not sleep after 1. finally took something at 2:15. I cant sleep during the day so if I am sure Im not going back to sleep, I will take a sleep assist medication. Ambien works for me, but half a tab is enough. its not something you want to take all the time, but occasional use is OK. We go to bed pretty early and get up early because rides and hikes are usually best in the morning. I had an extra cup of coffee yesterday so that was the likely reason.

I'm surprised at what shows I enjoy. In the right hands, topics you don't agree with can still be entertaining. the issue is so much to pick from. its not possible to watch everything. watching a trailer is helpful. I think both older actresses had a minimal role in "path", which is about a religious cult and their various maneuvers. Kathleen |Turner looked just awful. I seem to remember her having some kind of chronic illness. melanie Griffith looked like too much face work, and she was extremely, scary thin.
Path is entertaining but not be a favorite. we are watching a series called "alone" where a group of people are placed in wilderness areas with minimal supplies to see how long they last. an option to 'tap out" so help is a short time away. this is definitely a one time view, but interesting to see what each person ends up eating, how they build shelters and tools, and how long and why many put up with this for extended periods of time. some people are interesting, some annoying.
library is not convenient to us so we use Netflix mail service to get things not available streaming. it also works as a list of things I want to see but that aren't available currently. I put them in my queue and then I have a place to keep track of them.
