Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 6/21

Happy Wednesday aka: Hump Day.

We went to see a group we have followed for years called "Asleep at the Wheel" last night. They are from Austin and do country swing type music. It was nice to get out, and during the week no less! :).

Judy, that video is amazing, I felt like I was on a bike myself.

Lynda, what is Max up to on the farm? No baby chicks to protect now right? Does he go to the market with DH ?

Not sure what is up for today, maybe meet my cousin at the track, weed some beds, etc...

Hi to Josie, Lori, Valerie, & Dawn,

Take care,

Good evening!

Yesterday at lunch we did a condensed veersion of Travel Fit. I took out the cardio and made it pretty much all upperbody. Came out to about 35 mins and the ladies really enjoyed it. Was a nice way to mix things up a bit. Tonight I did SB lower body fire class and enjoyed it.

Deb...good news with that growth on Kylee. Sorry that she will need to have that tooth taken out. :(. I watched Seinfield whe it first ran years ago. A couple years ago my DH would have it on in the early evening and we would catch a couple of episodes. We loved that show. Hard for me to look at Michael Richards (Kramer) in a nice way now though. A few years back he was doing a stand up comedy show and he went off on a heckler with some terrible racists remarks. Richards was out of control and really crossed the line.

Judy...very scary with that weather. Bet the kitties were just as scared wondering why the heck they are in their carries. Good thinking to do that for them just in case.

Valerie...what beautiful pictures! My DS just asked the other day if we are going to start hiking again soon. i gues I hould not call what we do hiking compared to what you and your DH do! Lol!

Lynda...I read on FB that Jon Snow's eyes changed color. So I queued up the video on HBO Now and rewatched that last couple of minutes of that scene and they actually do!

Hi to Dawn and Josie!

Hi All--

This morning I did RK with 1 lb. gloves (55:15).

Deb, DH has been very fortunate this year--no sign of the hawks. So Max goes with him to the hayfield. Baby chicks are kept in a brooder and not let out to free range until they have all their feathers and really look more like chickens. DH just picked up an enormous batch of lively chicks yesterday, and he has a previous batch out in the pasture doing their thing. They love the rain because it brings out the bugs.

Lori, I saw something like that about Jon Snow on Huffington Post, but if they are turning blue, does it mean that he's 'warging' into Ghost or turning into a white walker? I guess we will have to wait a long time before anything conclusive. A lot of unhappiness out there about losing yet another favorite.

Beautiful here today! I hope the weather is good on Saturday for Jacob's Pillow.

Back and more or less recovered..took us 7 hrs 20 minutes although we spent a good hour on top lounging. it was very hot, much warmer than predicted. we didn't see much wildlife. any area that gets hunted ... things are hard to see. I always wonder how much nicer wild areas would be if hunting was suspended for 10 years. we did see 3 mama grouse and their broods. so cute but they like to use roads and trails and we almost ran over one group.
too funny though... you can hear the male grouse booming and calling each other ...a deep whoomp whoomp whoomp sound that carries for miles. we ran into two young women coming up who asked us what those scary sounds were and... "was it a bear?? " so funny ... I realized right away it was the grouse they were hearing and we all had a huge laugh over it. so funny... people we met for a couple minutes and we were all laughing hysterically like we'd know each other for years.

I never watched Seinfield not sure why.. I saw his stand up act once but he wasn't funny to me..so many people love him though, I probably missed a good thing.

to cook food/ heat water you use a camp stove, either white gas or butane cartridges. wood fires are messy and unreliable and illegal most places. dirty, don't work well. and then you stink of wood smoke. Gag!
most "cooking" is just boiling water.... to rehydrate, or simmering for a few minutes. Freeze dried food... you pour water into the package let it sit 5 min and eat it from the package. we have quite a few different stoves accumulated over the years. people drag all kinds of gear because they want to fry things like fish they've caught but I don't think it's worth the weight. stoves plus cooking pots weigh maybe 1 to 2 lbs. also need spoons, cups plus food itself with as little packaging as possible because you need to carry it back out. the more elaborate cooking gets, the more things weigh. we eat from the cooking pot. pots are titanium.... light. we wipe out the pot with paper towels and then rinse. this is total opposite of out door barbecues in the back yard!

Judy that is so scary... I used to be terrified when weather like that was imminent. we used to sit in the basement too. I moved away from the Midwest and that was a big reason. and then I worked for a company based in IN so ended up back there often! I need to watch that cycling video. I like cathe's spin but will get tired of them eventually.

Deb, too bad she needs a procedure but at least it has a definite cause and solution.

I always wondered if other states had goofy laws about colored margarine. I'm not crazy... it was a big deal in Wisconsin because the margarine all looked disgusting. it wasn't in sticks but a big plastic bag. anyway, that was "travel" in my family in the 50's ...driving to the IL state line to buy several cases of yellow colored margarine!

Good evening ladies!

Today at lunch we did 21D Barre. There were only two of us and we both missed Barre on Monday so it worked out well. Came home and did Cathe Live Boxing with Leg Blast. Wow what a great workout.

Lynda...his eyes turn lighter but not the ice blue of the white walkers. It is ever so slight. Never noticed till I read it and went back to look. They clearly go lighter then back to normal with his last breathe. I am convinced he comes back in one form or another! I wish Book 6 would come out already!!!!!

Valerie...that hike sounds wonderful! 7 hours!! After 3 hours I am exhausted. Like Lynda said a few posts back you must be in amazing shape! I forgot what a grouse is. Will need to google it. I can see how all that cooking equipment adds up. Your heating element must be really compact?

Have a great night all. It is 10pm. Way past my bedtime on a weeknight!! Lol!!

Hi Everyone,

This morning I did Muscle Endurance and a segment of Core Max. It felt good to do a total body workout again.

Deb-That is great news about Kylee! I know how relieved you are.

Lynda-I think I've seen all the Seinfeld episodes several times too. Did you watch The New Adventures of Old Christine too?

Lori-I remember that about Michael Richards now. It is hard to see Kramer the same way after that.

Valerie-I can see moving somewhere that doesn't have a threat of tornadoes. The irony for me is that when I moved here I thought I was getting away from it. I didn't think Michigan would have as many tornadoes as Iowa and Illinois...
I really like the Australian cycling video . They have a 45 and 90 minute version too.

Hi to Josie & Dawn,

Judy

Lori, if I was in amazing shape, I'd have done this without whining, and I was WHINING. it was hot and it was hard. I do so much better when it's cold. I do manage to keep my butt moving forward. it was supposed to be cooler ...forecast was WRONG... it was HOT. probably 80+ in the sunny parts. I was uncomfortable even sitting at the top with the wind blowing. and there was no water. oh well, it was worth it. there was a pic of a grouse in the link I posted before. they are about large chicken size, but gray/brown. the males have the cheek pouches, the females more plain. they are quite common but not obvious because they blend in so well. the chicks look like chicken chicks except more gray/brown. so darn cute.

I can post a link to a stove pic. we use butane cannister in mild weather because they're lighter and easy than white gas stoves but they don't work well in cold weather. you connect a replaceable butane cartridge to the stove, turn it on and flick your bic! titanium pot is light. we carry a stove more often in winter, in summer only if we are staying overnight. coffee is important.... as is a warm dinner.
http://www.rei.com/product/884738/snow-peak-bipod-stove this is similar to the stove we use in summer. the butane canister is replaceable. you set your pot on top and it will boil water in about 2 minutes. they are extremely easy to use and light weight.
Anyway, with backpacking, no one item is that heavy but you should be prepared for things to not go as planned...like wrong weather forecasts, hotter or colder than expected, and whatever comforts you can't live without. sunscreen. bug juice. sleeping bag. air mattress. rain gear. toothbrush, toothpaste, cup, spoon, stove, pot, your ID, car keys, map, compass, first aid kit, warmer clothes, hat/gloves, CC's, phone. no service usually but can't leave in car. anyway, all those little things add up until you have 35 lbs easily. oh yes..... food. water plus water bottle. larger container for water for wherever you stay. warm hat. sunglasses. sunhat. sunscreen. bug juice. something to read. it adds up, all those little things.

Good morning & Happy Thursday.

A beautiful day yesterday, I ended up taking a short bike ride instead of going to the track. John and I just hopped on our bikes and went around the neighborhood for about 2 miles. This is a big step for him. I hope we can do it more often.

Lori, Travel Fit is a great workout to use for the Ladies, and your WB skills make it even better! I didn't know that info about Michael Richards.

Lynda, Max is one lucky dog! I hope your weather is good for Jacob's Pillow this weekend.

Valerie, that sounds like a great hike! I still can't imagine carrying all that stuff. Wonder why Wisconsin did not put the coloring in margarine? Actually, it was probably more healthy without it. Now at our house, my Dad would not even hear of any margarine coming into the house. We had to scrimp on some things, but he wanted real butter. I used to like going to a friend's house and being excited to have margarine because it was always soft, not hard like butter out of the refrigerator was. Funny.

Judy, Isn't it amazing how every state has it's "know for" things, like tornados, or here (western NY) we are called the snow belt of NY? Which isn't really true, Syracuse gets more snow than we do and they are central NY.

Hi to Dawn & the travelling Josie,

Gardening for me, weather predictions are for rain most of the weekend, so if I want John to help, it has to be today, ( his day off).

Take care,

Deb, hope he enjoyed it.. biking is easy on most body parts and a good way to exercise especially for those who haven't done much in a while. Look for some converted "rail trails" in the area so you can do something easy but longer and without traffic. Hope you both can keep it up.
As far as I remember, the dairy industry thought margarine was competition to butter.. WI was the "dairy state". there must have been some sort of protective legislation. It's too long ago for me to remember. My mother always used butter for baking but for eating and daily use she thought it was too expensive. I use a little butter now but mostly oil. can't remember the last time I bought margarine. I always hated margarine ( or butter) on my bread or sandwiches so never been a fan.

Hi All--

This morning I did AT (56:00).

Deb, that's great that John is getting some exercise. Wasn't that what his doctor advised? I guess this state is known for its Nor'easters. So far the weather sounds okay, with the rain arriving in the evening as opposed to the afternoon. It's a ballet company from British Columbia.

Judy, no, I didn't watch that sit-com, but I remember that it had great reviews. Hmm! I will have to check to see if Amazon Prime has it.

Valerie, I vaguely remember those bags of oleomargarine with the red dot of dye that you were supposed to squeeze into the bag so it looked more like butter. I was in Minnesota, but I don't know if there was a law about it. Too bad it was so hot for your hike, which sounds daunting enough without the heat.

Lori, I agree--when oh when is Book 6 coming out? Martin is so slow, and I also feel like the series fell off a bit after book 3.

Another big golf weekend for my son--a member-guest tournament at his golf course. At least all the meals are provided, so there won't be any late night cookouts.

Lynda, those were the bags with the little dye button.... If you google it you can find pics and it seems the laws were designed to protect dairy interests. it sounds like some laws are still on the books although some were removed in the '60's. it was common for people to drive to neighboring states to buy 'oleo".

we did a 26 mile ride this morning but I had heat issues and couldn't wait to finish. it wasn't even that hot but I felt drained. we are having hot dry weather that will get worse before it gets better. mountains are very hot. I'm tired of this and it's not even july!.

Since all the golfers were faced with the same conditions, I'd call it fair but maybe not ideal if you're used to lush conditions. I think the course was constructed from an old landfill and is quite challenging.

Good evening

Today at lunch we did 21d extreme upper. We all agree this is an amazing workout. There are really tough pushups involved and I taught the ladies to modify and use the wall and they loved it. They get a great workout and do not get discouraged. This will help build their strength up and eventually we will move to the knees. Some had never workout out at all before we started the 21D. When we have on the floor ab moves some have difficulties so we will modify with a standing move and the others will move to the floor. This week 2 ladies were showing me they actually have bicep muscles! It is fun being their personal trainer :). Came home and did LIHI Legs with the abs sprinkled throughout. This is a favorite of mine and I should do it more often than I do.

Valerie..That little stove is great and I can see how usefull it would be. Once I saw the grouse I remembered. I have never seen one in person. Perhaps you were a little dehydrated on today's ride? Or perhaps it was just one of those days when the workout is just not doing it for you! That is so funny to hear your thoughts on butter as I am very similar. I never butter my bread, especially toast. And as far as lobster...no melted butter dish for me! Ha! I thought I was the only one. My DH thinks it is very odd!!!

Great workout Judy! I bet it felt good. Would you say you are 100% back? You must be so happy. My shoulder has been still doing great. No flares ups since right before the MRI. I have been consistant with my at home PT and will continue on for a while.

Deb...good for you and John taking a ride. Did he enjoy it? Hoping so. The ladies all cracked up when we did my "premix" of travel fit. They were all saying "of course you would know how to do that". They really liked using the bands so I will look on YouTube for some 30 minute workouts to mix in with our weight workouts.I have KCM Lift 2B Fit when they are ready. We all were talking about how committed we are to our workouts. We have been going strong for a while now.

Lynda...Lol on meals provided! Was hoping to golf a bit with DH on Sunday but I thought I heard rain. Some crazy storms recently. NJ and PA were hit really hard. Some of our restaurants had lost power. Read that Cathe was not able to do the Live Class this morning due to still having no power.

Hi to Josie and Dawn!

Hi Everyone,

I took a rest day today. I did some stretching and PT exercises but that was all. DH had to have some dental work so he took the day off work. We went to breakfast early then stopped at Lowes to look at some things for the condo. The dental appointment took most of the afternoon and now DH is resting comfortably.

Deb-our weather forecast looks like rain all weekend too. A good weekend for indoor projects I guess.

Lori-I'm very happy to be able to do my workouts again. I am much better, close to 100%. I'm doing my stretches and PT exercises often and still feel some tightness, but not like before.

Lynda-Amazon has all 5 seasons of "Old Christine". I also bought the first 2 seasons on DVD so DH can watch. He prefers DVDs to streaming.

Valerie-we used to go to Wisconsin quite often when I was growing up. I remember my parents going there to buy cheese.

Hi to Josie & Dawn,

Judy

Good morning & Happy Friday!

We did do gardening, we are reducing our perennial garden by about half. Dug out a bunch of day lilies, and Hostas, brought them to the office and gave them to the warehouse manager. He will take any perennial to fill in his garden. After pulling a ton of weeds, we put out some landscape fabric to keep them down for now. We are going to fence in the area and use some hardier weed killer on it before we plant grass. Lots of work but it will be worth it. So much less maintenance.

Valerie, we really both enjoyed the ride a lot. Now we need to figure out how to take off my front wheel so I can transport the bike in the back of my Subaru instead of having to use the bike carrier. I want to be able to drive it to one of the trails or the park myself. John's is east to take off, my brake system is different. The manual is no help, so we are probably going to have to go to the bike store and ask them. I hope your weather starts cooperating!

Lynda, yes, the DR advised John to get more exercise, and suggested bike riding because of the low impact. Keeping my fingers crossed that the weather holds out for you for tomorrow. We have a prediction of 1-2 inches of rain on Saturday alone, and more on Sunday.

Lori, yes, John enjoyed the ride. Jessica Smith has a great 30 minute band workout on YouTube. I downloaded it to my iPad desk top. I love her workouts with her little Boston Terrier in the background.

Judy, glad to hear you are almost 100% better! I have PT this morning, it will be my 2nd appointment. I have bee doing the exercises about 3 times a day, but not seeing much improvement. :(

Hi to Josie, & Dawn,

Take care,

Hi All--

This morning I did All Out Low Impact Hiit with Core 1 (49:22).

Deb, I know what you mean about cutting back on flower beds. I have done that as well because it's just too much work keeping up with the weeds. I fear there may be a lot of rain tomorrow afternoon. Of course we will be inside for the performance, but Jacob's Pillow is so nice to enjoy if the weather is good. Beautiful grounds. I watched the Pilot for Suits and was very interested. Looks good and it's free on Amazon Prime. Thanks for the tip.

Judy, I haven't checked yet to see if that series is on Prime. It does sound as though you are back into your workouts with no serious hip issues.

Lori, it sounds like you have missed your calling and should start a second career as a personal trainer! Lots of good modifications to help the beginners. My son is off golfing today, which is pretty nice. I hope his rounds aren't rained out tomorrow and Sunday.

Hope the weather gets better for you Valerie!

Hi to Josie and Dawn!

Deb this shows how to remove a front wheel. there are quite a few options on utube. it shows it very clearly. if you have disk brakes it looks a little different but there was a video for that too. most bikes have the quick release lever and a screw mechanism on the other side. you should learn how to do it since if you get a flat, you need to remove the wheel to fix. just go to utube and plug in "removing a front bicycle wheel". even if you take the bike in to a shop, it will make more sense once you've seen how to do it. I don't like to take the wheel off if I don't need to because it can mess up the brakes, and you need to be sure you get it back on correctly. why not just use the bike carrier? the drawback with a carrier is you need to cable lock if you leave the bike on it. the carrier itself should be locked to the car or not easily removed from the car. someone could steal the whole thing, bike and carrier. we have stowed both our bikes in the back of the Subaru ( carefully) when we stopped at store and didn't have a lock with us.

Rough night last night, too warm, and we should have turned on the "air" but we thought it would cool down like it has every other night. but no. tonight we will do better.

I'm going the opposite direction... I want more shurbs and less grass. no grass would be my choice but won't work here.

Judy, good to hear you're back to normal. I am doing all normal activity with my shoulder now and it is continuing to bother me less. still hesitating on serious workouts, but I'm not avoiding lifting heavy things raking, etc.
ETA I thought I would just get a link, didn't know I'd get the whole video...

Good evening ladies!

Today was a complete rest day. I stayed up very late last night working on a video for one of the ladies I workout with at the office. I am leaving for Charlotte on 7/3 and not returning to the office until 7/8 so they are panicking about the workouts as I have them all on digital on my phone that we hook up to the projector. We do not have a dvd player in the room we use. This one coworker (the youngest of the group that did the cart wheel!) gave me her old Iphone to transfer the workouts and of course I pulled all the little clips and pictures of her 3 year old son and made a fabulous little movie that included both video and pictures. I added in Celine Dion's "A New Day Has Come" which if you are not aware of this song is about the struggle to have a child and blessed to eventually have a son. A beautiful song for this video as this woman had 6 miscarriages and her son was conceived with the last in vitro she was to have. Amazing story and yes she balled her eyes out! Was so beautiful. I told her that is what she gets for allowing me full access to her phone. :)

Deb...I need to get going on my yard work. If the rain holds out tomorrow I plan to set up the fire pit area. Pull the chairs out and tiki lamps and add flowers. The yard looks so pretty when this is all set up. I just have not found the time to do it. I like Jessica too and will look at her channel for Band workouts. Her dog is named Peanut and she is actually a French Bulldog. My DS wants one in the worst way.

Valerie..we like it really cold at night so we put the air on everynight in the summer regardless of the weather. That is terrible that you have to lock your bikes up like that. I guess this day and age it is what it is.

Lynda...I think Saturday will be better than Sunday. It is suppose to pour here Sunday. I know I missed my calling. If I ever leave my job I will seriously consider Personal Training as I love it.

Judy...glad you are close to 100%! That is wonderful. Yup I agree about indoor projects this weekend. I have had a couple in mind but was waiting for that "rainy day"!

Hi to Dawn and Josie! Have a good night all!

Lori I wish it weren't true... there is a thief and an honest person on every corner. we are careful with bikes. they, by their nature, provide the thief with a way to get away quickly too. we live near a trail and there are plenty of meth heads/heroin junkies around. and homeless people living out of their cars. the bike parking areas are an attraction because it's off the street, has a porta potty, and is not in front of someone's house where they'd be reported.
the climate here is relatively mild so many live outside all year. best not to give them an easy opportunity. when DH and I stop for a bathroom break, one goes, one watches the bikes. all the regular riders do it for each other. I saw one lady take her bike into the bathroom with her and told her we'd watch for her if we cross paths again. just read about a dentist who came to his office one morning this week...thieves had crawled under his building and ripped off all the copper pipe. so he was out of business for a week or two! who would think you needed to wire shut the underparts of your professional building? construction sites are ridiculously plagued with rampant theft. I don't think we are better/ worse than any other place, but we are careful. the local casino has drawn a lot of loathsome people into the neighborhood.

wow air every night!. we only run it when it's hot.. too noisy otherwise. you are so talented with electronic projects.

Hi Everyone,

This morning I did Turbo Barre. My legs are very sore and I'm thinking that tomorrow will be a rest day.
Monday morning I have a dermatologist appointment. I decided to get a skin cancer screening. I've never had
a screening before, but I've had a couple of skin issues recently and just want to be safe.

Valerie-that's exactly what DH and I do when we take bathroom breaks. I usually don't ride alone anymore, but when
I did, I would take my bike into the bathroom with me.

Lori-that was so nice of you to make a movie for your friend! You are very talented! I think you would be a great trainer too!
I like it really cold at night too. I would run the air all time but DH doesn't like it as cold.

Deb-I hope you start seeing some improvement with your physical therapy soon.

Hi to Josie & Dawn,

Judy

Good morning & Happy Weekend!

PT went well yesterday, she said I could skip next week, and go the week after. My hand does not seem much better, but I am using the finger more, so it must be improving. It is supposed to rain all day today and tomorrow here too. Although they said it would start around 4:00 am today, it hasn't started yet. I hope they are wrong.

Valerie, I watched the video, also looked up some others. My brakes are not in the same place as the ones in the video...and they are what makes is so hard to get the wheel off. John can put the bike in the back of my car without taking the wheel off, but I have not tried it yet. I am not sure I can lift it. The bike carrier is a PITA in my opinion...excuse my French! John knows how to put it on the car, it takes a while, and like you said, you need locks etc. I think I will try putting the whole bike in the car, see if I can do it. I never thought about riding alone and having to go to the bathroom...mmmm...now I am having second thoughts about going to the park during the week alone. Do you have central air or window air conditioners? We have a split system, which is a hybrid kind of. I could never keep a window air conditioner on all night...I agree, too noisy. The split system is really quiet.

Lynda, I think you will like Suits, I really liked the premise of the story, although it's a little "far-fetched" the characters and acting make it enjoyable to watch. Kind of like "Damages-Lite"

Lori, that was so nice of you to do that video for that woman, and also to get the workouts on her phone so they can continue while you are gone. I agree with Lynda, you missed your calling...you make a great trainer! That's right, Peanut is a French bull dog. She seems little to me. I thought they were bigger.

Judy, smart idea to get a skin screening, if you think there is anything suspicious, better to be safe.

Edited to add: did you see that they caught and killed one of the escaped prisoners yesterday? Scary, since he was armed, and they assume the other one is too...they had broken into cabins and that is how they got guns. Hope they get the other one soon, I feel sorry for those people in that area, how scary it has to be.

Hi to Dawn,

Have a great weekend!
