Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 6/15

well, nothing ever is simple, is it? DH reminded me about how beta blockers work..the latest med my mother was put on. I told him to ask our mother's doctor( brother's doctor too) if it could be the problem and he took her off of it. she's improved again. Not dancing in the street, but not falling and able to get to the bathroom in time. In older people especially, the first thing to look at if falls are an issue, is what meds they are on. In her case she was put on this recently but it dropped her BP and pulse too low and especially when getting up from bed after being asleep, she was falling down.

Finally did the ride yesterday, 25 miles. a little shorter than usual but we had some annoyances and turned around before the end. yoga this morning. I am getting so much more work out of it now that I'm doing some things more correctly.

we are getting our house exterior painted next week so will be gone for at least a few days. possibly a week.

Lynda, in my experience .... I've given shots to horses, dogs, even did a blood draw on my dog .... they don't feel needles at all, or don't find it uncomfortable. I held my cat when they stapled ( yes, with a big stapler) together a wound after he pulled the stitches out. first I don't think they feel it like people do. none of them reacted as if it was painful. maybe it's a survival mechanism?

I had no clue squirrels ate strawberries either. I was very surprised to see him make a beeline for the plants, shake the branch as he grabbed a berry! no wonder I never got any ripe fruit.. we've had birds picking blueberries but strawberries are kind of big. Not sure if it's worth the effort as I don't see how I could net them tightly enough.

Good evening ladies!

This morning was ruthless core and flex and this afternoon was 25 minutes of Barre that I streamed from Youtube at work. Was a combination of Jessica Smith and Kathy Smith. Reminded me of how much I used to love Kathy Smith. I always liked her personality.

Dh is doing well. Had a follow up appt today and they put on a hard cast. He will have this for two weeks then they remove it along with the stiches. He then will have a walking boot for a few weeks with PT. He seems to be in better spirits today. Perhaps knowing he will have the walking boot soon.

Valerie...hopefully it was that new med your mom was on that was causing the problem. Poor thing. Good job on the ride. 25 miles is still a good one. Have a good time on your trip.

Lynda...thanks for the book recomendations. I have read a couple of Barclay's books and they were great.

Deb...I know what you mean about apple. It can get fustrating. I still love my apple products though. ;)

Hi to Josie and Judy!

Good morning and Happy Friday!

Woke up with the alarm this morning, but just could not do a workout. Maybe tomorrow. We got an estimate yesterday for replacing our roof....it's a complete tear off etc, but I am depressed on the price...$33k! This includes new gutters, but Seriously? The roofer that came said it will require removing some of the siding and replacing, and there will be a 7 inch gap that they have to fill somehow to make the house look right or something. Totally depressing. :(

Lynda, hopefully they will have Fargo for fee in the fall? Is that when the next season starts? How is Max's paw and the chicks? Are they grown now and not so cute? LOL. I loved that Bad Guys book, read the first 2, is the other also part of that series?

Valerie, that is scary about your Mom and the meds. Glad you mentioned it though...my uncle that is in AL place had also started falling, right when they changed his meds! Have a good trip. So the house will be painted when you get back? That will be nice to come home to.

Lori, glad your DH is feeling better. I understand about Apple...it's almost like a cult! People complain but still buy the stuff, I am one of them.

Hi to Judy & Josie,

Anyone have any fun plans for the weekend?

If there is one thing I've learned, it's be suspicious of meds. Not saying don't take them, but be aware and don't take more than you need to. this was a med that probably would help her heart failure issue, but it apparently caused different issues that were troubling. this started fairly quickly after she was put on it. anyway things are better right now.

DH and I went to Verizon store yesterday trying to get a better phone plan. we also are upgrading our ipad to the cellular one. Deb, I can see why people love these things. I'm nowhere near adept at it but it is so gorgeous. a cult. yes. was just reading about the kill switch on iphones and how much it decreases theft risks. we will switch soon. our current contract is up but one new device at a time.

Hi Ladies,

I'm taking a hard core class today and tomorrow I'm going spinning plus body pump. I never made it to the gym yesterday, I got ready but was not feeling it. On Sunday I'm going to the Hollywood Bowl to see Janelle Monae with two of my best friends. I'm packing a picnic and they are bringing the wine :).

Valerie, me and my family are Verizon clients and have been for years and are very happy with our plan.

Garance, did you watch the critics choice awards last night? Fargo did very well :)

Valerie, hope your mom is feeling better.

Hu to Judy and Lori!

Josie

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did Super Cuts (45:55) and took Max for a 3 mile walk after dinner last night.

Deb, Fargo only started about 2 months ago on FX, so I doubt there will be a new series in the fall--more likely, the spring. Bad Move is the first one, Bad Guys is the second, and Fear the Worst is the third with Zack Walker. Trust Your Eyes is just a very clever thriller. Wow, that is a lot of money for roofing! What kind of roofing are you looking at? Is it something very pricey to begin with?

Josie, no, I did not watch the Critics' Choice awards, but I would give awards to all of the actors, especially Billy Bob Thornton and Martin Freeman, and the writers. I watched a PBS mystery I recorded on Sunday--The Escape Artist--and really enjoyed it. Looking forward to the next episode. Another creepy villain.

Valerie, that's good news for your mom. You must really trust your housepainters. I'm not sure I would want to be away while someone was doing a job like that. I have the first disk for Orphan Black. Is it as good as the critics say?

Lori, I am about to start Dust and I'm looking forward to it. Hope your DH stays upbeat. I guess it's always nice to know the worst is over.

I'm off to Jacob's Pillow tomorrow to see Hong Kong Ballet. The weather is perfect!

Hi to Judy!

Happy Weekend!

It's going to be a beautiful day! Low 70"s low humidity, perfect. :)

Valerie, we have the iPads that are able to access the internet anywhere, but found that this was very expensive to use. We use them at home, with our own router etc, then if we are in a free wifi place, we use them, otherwise they are off for internet. For us, we could have gotten the cheaper, wifi only ones.

Josie, your outing tomorrow sounds like a lot of fun!

Lynda, not sure about the roofing estimate, no special roofing involved, only that he said they need to replace or fix some of the siding, and they would want to replace the sun roof in the attic dormer room, ( why? I don't know), move the roof vent ( again, why?)....I asked John if they thought they needed to replace some windows too, asked sarcastically of course. Almost like he was looking for things to add to pad the bill. I'm not happy, as you can imagine. Have fun at Jacobs Pillow!

Hi to Judy & Lori,

Agility class today, then HouseMax, maybe GardenMax and definitely Making Dog FoodMax!

Good morning ladies!

Yesterday ended up being a rest day. Was planning to workout at lunch but ended up very busy.

It is beautiful here today! I am about to to Athletic Training and some spinning then walk chester.

Other than that no plans for the weekend. If DH is feeling up to it we may go to our favorite Mexican restaurant but no specific plans.

Went to Kohls this morning (yeah I was one of those people at the door at 8:00AM!). Had a 30% coupon so bought some really cute workout clothes. Wanted to get in and out before they got busy. Felt like I bought a lot for what I spent plus they gave me kohls cash to spend later. I am sure I will be able to put this to good use!

We have the wifi only Ipads and it is fine for us. If we ever need to browse and no access to wifi We can just bump off the hot spot on our phones. This works well for us and this way do not have another monthly payment.

That is crazy expensive roof replacement!!! Deb...are you getting another estimate from another company?

Lynda...have fun at Jacob's Pillow!

Josie...I have had those days when you get all ready and about to work out then...not so much!

Hi Judy!!!!!

Deb, we stopped at a different Verizon store before upgrading the ipad. finally got someone who understood what we were asking! she knew the service plans & was very clear on how much each would cost. DH had talked to a number of people ( Verizon & apple) previously and kept getting different answers!
Josie, we've been with Verizon forever and don't have any problems with them, just some inexperienced people who could not give us consistent answers.
we realized we didn't need to upgrade the ipad so we changed our Verizon contract to a 65 plus one, added mobile hot spot for $10 a month. cost varies widely depending on what "plan" you are on. the phone serves as a router when there is a decent signal and links wirelessly to the ipad. we tried it in the parking lot and it was fast and easy. should work well for traveling... 4 gigs of data. at home, we use the router from the desktop for ipad. you are right, you'd run up a big bill for no reason.
Lori it sounds like you are doing the same thing. we were using a program called PDAnet (one payment rather than monthly) previously but it worked sporadically and we could not contact anyone lately so decided to go with this.
did a fast 15 mile ride this morning and loaded everything and will leave early tomorrow.
so glad this process is winding up. we'll switch our phone to iphone next time we upgrade. this works fine for now.

Deb, that estimate sounded pretty high. we try to get 3 estimates on expensive projects like that. sometimes people who don't really want the job will bid really high just so you'll go elsewhere. we had a roof done a few years ago and it was unpleasant. the contractor brought in a bunch of people from Brazil to do the actual labor. I'd never do that again. don't know how common that practice is, only 2 guys spoke English. sort of like outsourcing but the quality was hard to monitor.

Lynda, we don't want to be home for the painting if possible. our neighbor knows the painter pretty well and we've had lots of contact with him. he is doing our neighbor's house at the same time. we are happy someone will be here every day while we're gone.
we are watching 'orange is the new black" and have not seen "orphan black" yet but I've heard nothing but good things so it's on the queue. OITNB is prison based and some of it is weird sexual lesbian stuff but I read really positive reviews so we'll go a bit longer.
