Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 6/14

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, Judy, and Dawn--

This morning was AB (54:00).

Deb, yes, Jane Whitefield is half Seneca native American. I like all of Thomas Perry's thrillers, even those without Jane. Glad you are enjoying Veep--despite its verisimilitude. My sons collected baseball cards. DH sent them their collections awhile ago.

Lori, cartwheels? I haven't done one of those since I was a little girl. Something about my center of balance stopped working about 13 or 14 when my hips started changing. Darn--no Wayward Pines tonight! Not sure why they are skipping a week. Probably some sports event.

Judy, thanks for that website.

Have a great day everyone!

I'm back, trip was a success. Our new tent is lovely...as tents go, that is. it weighs only 3 lbs and has two doors and two vestibules so we can get out of it without climbing over each other. our old tent had one door and with two people it was hard. every year more features for less weight. DH got a new sleeping bag to lighten his pack. it's light but very narrow. I'd be unhappy. mine is much wider and stretchy because I'm a very active sleeper. it weighs just over 1 lb while mine is over 3.

so odd to me that none of you camped or backpacked before. I only did it once when living in the mid west, and it was absolutely awful there. I don't like campgrounds, but if you like outdoor things like hiking, it's hard to stay close to where you want to hike if you don't camp. we try for dispersed camping as much as possible. people in campgrounds are not always on good behavior. DH and I camp and backpack on almost all our vacations. we've covered thousands of miles on foot.

sounds like the airlines have backed off of the carry on issue. bet there was a huge fuss! Deb, our meetings were "business casual". I'm not a clothes horse and could do it easily in a carry on and garment bag. I'm thinking it was SW air that I flew and went to the back to use the bathroom, along with several other people, and we found there wasn't one only two in the front. long lines.
Judy did you always get your luggage back? I always did but it was stressful and annoying until it showed up.

I did the Hard Strikes cardio premix today - not 100%, but respectable. It was a bit warm and humid and I didn't have the a/c on, so it was just too much to go all out. I have the rest of this week and then next week, and I'm done with the XTrain 90-day rotation. I think I'll fit in some easier work for a while after that. I preordered ICE, and I'm looking forward to some intermediate workouts that I can fit in between the tougher workouts.

Valerie - I hope that you finally have your mouse problem under control. They can be very determined to get into the smallest space!

Lori & Lynda - I'm watching Wayward Pines, too. After the first episode, I realized that I'd read the first book and that's why everything seemed so familiar. It's new to my daughter, though, so I'm trying not to give any spoilers even when she asks. I like the actors that they've used - kind of unexpected, but it works.

Deb - Good that you have the ant invasion under control!

Hi to Josie and Judy!

Good morning & Happy Friday!

Even though I am retired, I still like Fridays.

Lynda, I finished VEEP season 1 last night, and found out that the rest of the seasons are not free on Prime. :( I wonder if kids still collect baseball cards? Is Wayward Pines like GOT?

Valerie, glad your trip was nice and the equipment worked out.

Dawn, good for you for sticking with that X-Train rotation! Those are tough workouts. I, too am looking forward to some intermediate workouts that are 40 minutes long. Also with a modifier! :)

Hi to Josie, & Judy,

Anyone have any fun plans this weekend?

Take care,

Good morning ladies!

Yesetrday we did 21 upper extreme. Every one did a great job. It is a tougher workout but I would not call it extreme. We have done this one before and glad the ladies wanted to try it again. Going to try and fit in a couple more of the extreme now that they see it isn't crazy ridiculous. No workout when I came home. My DS was here and we had a nice visit.

Deb...wayward is nothing like GOT. It is on Fox and currently on demand. I am enjoying it. I read the books but there are significant differences which is keeping me guessing.

Dawn...congrats on the rotation. i received great results from Xtrain.

Valerie..amazing that the tent and sleeping bags are that light! Glad you like the new tent. I used to camp a lot years ago with my xhusband. Never to the extent you do though. My ds and i have been talking about it. No way would my DH go! I heard they backed off too on the carry on. Too many complaints.

Lynda...same here with a cart wheel. Been ages since I did one and no matter how confident I feel there is no way you could get me to do on again! Rain today but nice tomorrow!

Judy...I think Suzanne Bowen based her workouts on Lotte Bertk Method. I believe she worked for a studio years ago and that is how she got her start. Think this is wht I read!

Received my MRI results and no tears which is what I expected but good to be sure. Tendonitis in the upper long head of biceps. It seems to be minor now from all the stretching I have been doing so she left it up to me to do PT ot not. Of course I chose not! I will keep going with my stretches but give me a time limit. If I do not see improvement then I will succumb to PT. :(

Have a great day! Hi to Josie!

Valerie- Fortunately I did always get my luggage back. It was stressful waiting for it though.

I'll check back in this afternoon.

Judy

Lori that's great news. I am still having some issues. not all the time and only certain positions. backpacking works every muscle and that went fine though I was careful and we didn't do anything that hard. when I look at pictures upper bicep tendon is where I have discomfort sometimes too. maybe we have twin injuries?? I would skip cartwheels.... seems too many things could go wrong and jerk body parts around.

Judy sometimes airlines delivered your luggage to your home or where you were staying after it was lost or delayed. I don't know if they still do that. Mine was never lost "forever" , always showed up.

Long ago when we first started backpacking, gear was very heavy. it was not a high priced, profit generating specialty market like it is now. we used lots of army surplus, things weighed a ton and didn't always work well. DH and I met in a mountaineering first aid course so our fate was sealed! Old gear..it used to be common to have 50-60 lbs. trips were shorter by necessity. now, weight is much less and things work better. Still, it would be a hard activity to get into if you have not done it when you're pretty young. we replace things as they wear out and now sometimes because new things do the job and weigh much less.

Dawn, apparently we have the mouse issue resolved. many days now without catching one. no new chewing on the garage door seals. these were "super mice"... if they didn't find an opening, they just ate their way through.
Ants can become an issue later on in summer. I have many hummingbird feeders going, and they always drip a little. the drips attract ants so I am always ready with ant traps. traps last longer than spray. ants are not an issue on the feeders themselves, just on drip surfaces below. I love feeding the birds. we have them all year and somewhere between a dozen and 2 dozen depending on season and offspring. only a few 'residents" after October, but they hang out here all winter now. Didn't happen until maybe 5 years ago. global warming.

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did Dancin' Abs (58:00).

Deb, Veep just finished its third season I believe. Maybe season 2 will show up soon at Amazon Prime. I loved The Wire. You must use closed caption, though, or some of the Baltimore accents and gangsta language is hard to follow.

Valerie, glad you enjoyed your new equipment. I'm not a camper or backpacker either. When I go for a hike, I don't want anything to carry but a water bottle, which was great at Rancho La Puerta.

Dawn, good for you on finishing that rotation! I did that one, too, but not the Tabatacize. I think Lori and I were doing it together. I'm hooked on Wayward Pines. Trying to decide whether to read the books--it's a trilogy.

Lori, that's good news on the MRI. I was happy, too, when no tears were discovered.

Hi to Judy!

Off to a pedicure this afternoon. A party tomorrow evening.

Hi Everyone,

I couldn't decide what workout to do this morning. I still want to do a couple more weeks of Slow & Heavy, but I just didn't feel like doing heavy weights today. I ended up doing Cathe 80's Style Cardio Live for the first 30 minutes, then I did Turbo Barre. I really liked the 80's style cardio! So much fun! I will be doing that one again.

Deb-I think I did pay for Veep seasons 2 & 3 on Amazon. Season 4 is only on HBO so far but it might get put on Amazon now that the season is over.

Valerie-yes, I remember having my lost luggage hand delivered, from the Quad City Airport to my apartment in Bettendorf, in 1990. Another time it was delivered to my hotel in Cincinnati when I was traveling for work. Both times so long ago, I'm not sure how they handle lost luggage now.

Dawn-that is awesome that you are finishing up the 90 day rotation! That is quite an accomplishment! I am looking forward to the ICE workouts too.

Lori-I was thinking that Lotte Berk's workout reminded me of SB's style. It makes sense now. That's great news about your shoulder. Hopefully you won't need PT.

Hi to Lynda & Josie!

Judy

Good evening ladies!

No workout with the ladies. There were only a couple of us and we both decided to do errands and call it a day. Was going to have a complete rest day but decided at last minute to do SB lower body boot camp which is about 35 minutes and that was it for today.

Valerie...wow, can't imagine carrying 50-60 lbs on my back, crazy! I can see how backpacking even with a lighter load would use every muscle. Which shoulder is bothering you? Mine is my left. The right one did hurt but all is good now. We may indeed have the same injury!

Lynda...I injoyed the books. I have read a few of Blake Crouch's books when I am in the mood for a sci fi mystery thriller. Yes we did do Xtrain at the same time and I'll have to say I received great results from that rotation. Hoping my shoulder is fine by the end of summer as I would like to pick up where I left off with STS.

Judy...I liked the 80's style cardio too. Was a lot of fun. I am really going to try to avoid PT!

Hi to Dawn, Deb and Josie!

Good morning,

I hope we have a nice day today, tomorrow is supposed to be rain and thunder storms. I don't remember a spring with this much rain.

Lori, that's great that the MRI did not show any tears etc. Tendonitis is still pretty painful and can take a while to resolve.

Valerie, Of course you met on a mountaineering first aid course! Was it in Wa State or in the mid-west where you grew up? Any time we had luggage go astray, ( I think it was twice in my whole lifetime and that was for personal travel) they always brought the bags to us. John knows someone that used to have the job for the Buffalo airport, driving the bags to the people. It's been years since it happened here, but I am sure they still do it.

Lynda, I do have The Wire in my watch list. Did you see that new Amazon produced comedy, "Catastrophe"? I watched the first 2 episodes, not sure if I will continue. I wish they would hurry and do a second season of Bosch.

Judy, great workouts!

Hi to Josie, ( are you in Spain yet?) & Dawn,

Have a great weekend!

back from a ride.. about 22 miles, one of our shorter routes. took us a bit over 2 hours. we checked the schedule for road maintenance. a lot of the roads on this ride are scheduled to be resurfaced. that ends use as a riding road for several months until all the loose gravel gets pounded in or blown off. the county rotates through roads so part gets redone every year. Still a good workout. this one gets windy and with a headwind 15-16 mph drops to 11mph and is harder.

Deb, it was here in WA. I'd moved from the Midwest. I wanted to learn how to enjoy the new world I was in.... so I took the mountaineering course. I had never done much outdoor stuff before. I liked hiking and backpacking but never could get into climbing. ugh. I hate rock climbing although I tried more than once. just not my thing.

what a great job..returning lost luggage! bet he was welcomed happily by most!

Lori, my right shoulder is the problem. hauling the pack around didn't bother it. I think my pack weighs 30, maybe 35 lbs. with a good pack that fits well you don't feel the weight as much as it sounds.... it's not like picking up a 35 pound box and trying to carry it. the weight is distributed evenly, close to your back so you can walk normally. we are more careful than many people today about carrying extra supplies. things can go wrong, and I would never want to have to call for a rescue.
food can weigh more than you expect. I won't eat freeze dried. I make my own things with dry foods like rice, ramen, powdered milk, cheese, spices. water weighs more than you think. . usually we don't think about water that much here, but it's been dry, there was little snowpack so water won't be as easy to find as usual. so "walking in" the pack weighs more than "walking out"... food is usually mostly eaten, and you know where water is so you don't worry about how far the next source is.
I was reading a story in Backpacker magazine about some lady who took her 60 yo father on a backpack and about how impossible it was for him, even getting into the tent and sleeping on the ground. a pad/sleeping bag make it fairly comfy. it's not like a bed at home, but much easier than trying to sleep in a chair. after the first night it's easier. made me feel tough!

Is Josie gone already?
Dawn.. strong work on finishing that rotation. heat and humidity will take a toll in summer.
