Good morning,

Spent the day at the dog show yesterday. Very long day, and I am headed there again after a visit to my aunt who was taken into the hospital yesterday because she was having seizures. They admitted her to check out her heart. With the type of condition she has, seizures are common. It is pretty daunting though for those around her, and especially my cousin who gets the call from the nursing home and rushes to the emergency room.

Cathy, thanks for the links. I did go over to Tracie's site and watch those clips. Did you say they were all around 30 minutes?

Valerie, is it the way they speak on those shows, the accent, or the way they are produced? Someone loaned us the first season and DH watched about 10 minutes of the first show, packed it all back up and gave it back! He is not a TV person at all.

Garance, I like the "bartering" idea...I joke around with DH to have him do dental work for some of our more "handy man" inclined relatives as a bartering thing. He probably would but no one has ever seriously offered to do something around our house.

Off to the show...have a good day!

Deb the first season of which show?

I've always had trouble understanding dialogue in movies & TV, even as a little kid. especially when several people talk at once, like West Wing, or with Jersey accents like the sopranos. I can't understand anything the lady in The Closer ( Brenda?) says. any British movies are hopeless without subtitles. other shows are fine but I still turn on subtitles. I follow story lines better and DH doesn't have to tell me what just was said. I can be hearing everything just fine and then phrase completely loses me. I have minor hearing loss in the vocal range so I just live with it. I never could understand lyrics in music either and am always surprised to find out what actually was said. some of that is clearer with DVD's and general improvement in electronics. I've been surprised to hear most people have no idea on song lyrics and I'm no worse than average.

I did the first disk of Meso 2 on friday, and saturday we did a 25 mile bike ride. just a regular street ride with traffic so it took about 2.5 hours. bought some fresh local strawberries after we were done. wow, they're wonderful. probably my favorite fruit. not like the california crunchy ones available all year. they aren't worth the few calories.

Hi Deb, Josie (are you back now?), Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did disk 22 for chest, sh, tris (43 min.). The dropsets are very efficient on these--when you do 10, drop some weight, do 10, drop some weight. Only 10 seconds between sets, which really speeds things up. Nice to have a shorter STS for a change.

Valerie, that's too bad about not understanding film dialogue. Robert Altman (dir. of films like Nashville) is responsible for the talk-over dialogue you find so difficult. It was transported, along with a very active camera, to television with series like St. Elsewhere and Hill Street Blues in the 80s, and really stopped the static talking heads stuff permanently. Probably the most famous is ER in terms of these Altman techniques. It's actually the way people talk to one another. Maybe the older films would work for you, when everyone had a quasi-theatrical accent. I just looked at Now, Voyager yesterday (Bette Davis, Paul Henreid, Claude Raines) again for my film course, and I cannot imagine you would have any trouble hearing every word with Davis' exaggerated enunciation--lots of very open vowels and sharp consonants ("Oh, Jarrry, whahy ahhsk fahr the moooon. We hahve the stahs.") I definitely became a film lover during the age of Janus films, so I just love foreign films with subtitles, hate dubbing, but I'm pretty good with French and Swedish. I also do some pretty good accents, including Jersey, British, and southern drawl. If you just keep your teeth closed, everything sounds slightly like Sean Connery. I try to avoid the Minnesota accent because that's where I'm from.

Deb, farmers love to barter--and haggle, and DH sometimes does really well with it. Had a ton of work done on his workshop up in the barn for three cords of wood and a side of beef. I have never felt comfortable haggling, but DH will talk prices down a lot. Makes him feel authentically like a Yankee farmer I guess. Last summer at Cape May we were looking at some beautiful Navajo bracelets, and I really wanted this cuff with a big chunk of turquoise, some heavy silversmithing and two smaller pieces of coral. Asking price was 450 dollars, DH got the guy down to 325, so it's mine. Love it, and it turns out, the silversmith is A. Jake, a pretty famous Navajo silversmith.

Tonight I hope the Celtics pull ahead of the Lakers. Go Celts!!

I know people really talk over each other like that ( thanks mr. Altman) but I have trouble hearing more than one thing at once. if it's british, I can't get it at all. there have been movies where in a half hour I swear I didn't get 5 words. war movies with loads of background noise and british movies are the least likely to have subtitles, or just in french and spanish. older movies often don't have subtitles though most newer ones do. I detest old movies where people "talk at each other". Ugh. I can understand what they're saying, but can't stand the style and posing. I generally won't watch anything made before the '60's-70's.

gotta go, DH is needing assistance.

Monday

Good Morning!

I did a 35 minute I-Tread this morning, 222 calories burned. I really should have done a weight workout, but was not into it. I am burned out on CLX, ready to do something different. I may make this week a cardio week and start off next week with a differnt rotation, or do one upper, one lower and the rest cardio.

Valerie, I have a similar problem with British movies, or TV. Did you ever watch All Creatures Great & Small on PBS? I found that the more I watched it, the easier it was to get the dialog right off. Love that series. Yes, local strawberries are the best!

Garance, too funny about your DH and haggling. Mine is just the opposite, if I start to haggle he walks away and waits at a distance, he gets so embarrased.

Looks like Josie is on the home stretch!

Have a great day!

I watched "All Creatures" a looong time ago, don't know if this would be the same series. seems likely it's a new version. I'd read the books and was upset when the people cast to play the characters didn't look like I'd pictured them. I don't remember having trouble understanding it though. Having read the books probably helped.
some things are fine and others are impossible so I just click on subtitles and use them sometimes more, sometimes less. I agree, hearing the dialogue repeatedly you ear gets better at understanding it. I even visited England, Ireland, and scotland a long time ago and some people were easy to understand and others, it was impossible. hard sometimes to believe we share a common language. sometimes words or expressions are different and you "hear" it but still don't understand.
I hate dubbing... their mouths don't match the words you hear, sort of like when the soundtrack gets off . much prefer subtitles.

Okay, today I'll try two weight workouts, I forget which number... 14? I'll know it when I see it. and then a leg one. haven't done any legs for a while so even with all the biking I expect DOMS.

deb, yes, they are all 30 m.

i did dangerous curves ahead this am. that is tough!

LOL! that is why we have the captions on on our tv, it is really hard sometimes to hear what people are saying, or could it be that we are getting hard of hearing? :)

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did Zumba--Cardio Party (46 min.). Really fun!!! Can't wait to do it again and get even better with the moves.

Valerie, I love old movies, including the silents--especially Chaplin and Lillian Gish. Anything by Hitchcock from the 1920s on, Italian neo-realism (De Sica, Rossellini, Fellini, Antonioni) from the 40s and 50s. My handle, garance, is the name of the character played by Arletty in the great French occupation film, Les Enfants du Paradis (Carne-Prevert). If you have never seen Bette Davis in Now, Voyager or The Letter, you don't know what you are missing. And how about Barbara Stanwyck in Double Indemnity (Billy Wilder)? She's the archetype for every film noir femme fatale. Love Fred Astaire-Ginger Rogers films and Singin' in the Rain. A lot of Bergman's films are in the 50s, too. And how about Bogart? Casablanca? Jimmy Stewart? There's a lot of great stuff prior to 1960 IMHO.

Deb, I loved All Creatures Great and Small on PBS too. They still run that series here and occasionally I tune in for old times' sake.

The Celts won last night! They may be old, but they are tough.

Tuesday

Good morning,

No workout today, :(, DH was snoring horribly last night so I went to the couch and got a terrible night's sleep...ugh...

Valerie, the All Creatures series changed a bit, when they changed "Helen" his wife. It was a lot better in the beginning, with the original Helen, Tristan, and of course "Tricky-Woo"..I find it hard to read CC and watch what is going on at the same time.

Cathy, You sound like you are feeling a lot better, getting in a lot of workouts. Yes, maybe some hearing issues mean we are getting older...

Garance, so you are doing Zumba for all your cardio, and STS? Loved the All Creatures books even more than the TV series. Every time I see Barbara Stanwyck I think of an old TV western series for some reason...wasn't she in one?

I wonder when Josie is scheduled to be back in LA...

Take care,

first off, I did the plan, and did 2 disks yesterday. legs and back, shoulders, biceps. wowee, are my butt and thighs sore today. all the hiking and biking somehow just don't do what squats and lunges do. tomorrow will probably be worse. I was really hoping all the other work would prevent this but sadly, no. apparently I will never learn not to skip leg disks for too long.

Lynda, I've never enjoyed older movies. and I detest musicals from any and all years. I've never understood why humphrey bogart had any appeal at all. when I see his face I can only think of stale tobacco smell. Every now and then I'll try to watch an old movie that is well regarded, (African Queen and Rear Window come to mind..) but I didn't enjoy them. the actresses you mentioned all had a distinctive look ( stanwyck, davis, hepburn) so I could tell them apart but so many others looked so much alike I couldn't tell one from the next. I had the same issue with the male stars. and when it comes to recognizing faces ( real people and movie people) I'm really good at it so I assume they were picked and made up to a certain ideal so they actually DID look alike. same make up, same hari, same clothing. I did like GWTW but that's the only "older" movie I remember liking.
I've never had an opportunity to take a class in film so maybe I don't know what to look for. I hate to sound like a cultural dolt but ...?? I just never enjoyed old movies.

In another confession , I can't figure out how to see what Josie is up to on her ride. I saw a pic of her way back at the beginning but I don't know how to find her on the current site. help?

oh yeah, barbara stanwyck ... Big Valley ..

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did BBL High and Tight (37 min.) followed by the Zumba Cardio Express (20 min.).

Deb, I am just cycling in my Zumba dvds gradually so I do one at least once a week. I will wait until next week, my rest week from STS meso 2, to do the Zumba sculpt, with the dumbbells that make the sound of maracas. DH and Max will be mocking me, I'm pretty sure--or DH will be guffawing and Max will try to decide if this is a cue to play with him.

Valerie, as the saying goes, "There's no disputing taste." I teach film, so I have pretty wide-ranging tastes. Maybe if you check http://tailwinds2010.blogspot.com you will find Josie. I have not been back there for several days, but I thought the race would be over by now.

Go Celts!! (I think they are on tonight.)

Garance thanks for posting the link. I went there originally and saw the first 2 days but today I couldn't find the link.

Monday I was officially down to 169lb. A piece of Italian cream cake kind of wiped out the extra 2lb loss but it was worth it. I have lost consistently for the last three weeks. Those 4lbs plus the 3lb vacation weight gain that I lost in May makes me down 7lb.

I am still aiming for 1150 calories 5 days a week and 2 days at maintenance. For the most part I'm not hungry yea!!! I just make the day I'm hungry a 1700 calorie day.

Probably the only thing that isn't going on me is my hearing. I hear all the conversations around me when we go out to eat (I mean at all the other tables). It's quite painful when everyone else turns the tv up so loud. It actually hurts.

I worked until 4am this morning and of course the phone rings at 7am. That's what I get for putting off work and then having to finish before vacation.

Joan

That's the link to the blog that I've gone to, but I don't know what to do from there. so, still needing help. I don't blog, or follow any so I don't know how they work.

I don't have age related hearing loss. I can hear little noises like hummingbirds ( from a long way away) just fine. I can hear conversations in movies between the people behind me, while the dialogue on screen is 100x louder and I can't always understand it. I've always had this issue since I was very young so it's just annoying but it's not new. just complaining because it really interfered with TV and movies for me until subtitles started being more available. sound quality on DVD movies is better than videotape. I like watching movies at home without distracting noises like in a theater, and we can control the volume. Been in some theaters where I though my ears would get blown off.

Wow, Lynda, you teach film? no wonder you have such in depth knowledge. I love to watch movies but I confess I have no training or background, just strictly judging on basis of " I like it or don't like it". DH would only watch action/adventure if he had his way and I try to have a broader perspective. one area that has completely tanked (IMHO) are comedies. the last movie that made me laugh out loud was "Mama Mia" which I guess was a sort of a musical but DH hated it so we only saw it once. Do you think there will be an end to the gross-out crudeness that seems to have over taken any semblance of cleverness or witty dialogue?

Strong work Joan! Plan your trip carefully so you don't get caught in a backslide.

Hi Ladies,

I'm back! I took Monday off so that I could go to the nail salon and had some waxing done so that I and Maribel could feel human again. Sunday I jus laid around and did all of my laundry from the trip. The trip was amazing and I will definitely do it again. My DD is uploading all of the pictures that I took with the regular camera which will show the closing ceremonies on the blog.

I had over 400 e-mails and just finished responding to the more important ones. I will now be working out the rest of the week, but plan on going back to the gym on Saturday and taking zumba and bodyflow classes for at least 2 weeks. I will not be getting on my bike until I can feel my undercarriage again :)

I will be back tomorrow.

Have a great evening!

Josie

Wednesday

Good morning,

No workout again. I did not want to get up so around 2:30 I turned off the alarm. yawn...

Valerie, yep, Big Valley! It is strange how you get such DOMS from working out when you do so much other stuff with your legs.

Garance, so the DVD set includes maracas? hmmm...I can see your DH now, with Max jumping around thinking he is dancing in Brazil or something. At least you provide the comedy for them right?

Joan, WTG on the weight loss! You need to turn your clock upside down and work during daylight!

Josie, welcome back! It was great being able to see the pics of you and all the riders. LOL, I don't blame you for not wanting to get on your bike for a while. Do you know how much was raised?

well I am off to get some coffee and try to wake up. Take care,

well Deb, that is the question I'd love to have answered. How come I get zero overlap between different leg exercises that seem to work the same muscles? It doesn't happen with my upper body. If I'm splitting wood or shoveling snow or dirt for a while and then go back and do an upper body disk I don't get especially sore, a few little twinges but nothing major. the bicycling was very tough, and so was the hiking, plus I was doing treadmill. I do not understand how I can be almost crippled-sore after doing squats and lunges. I am so glad I didn't push the weight because at the time it felt pretty good, I wasn't "struggling", just aware of my history with DOMS. today is probably the worst day and I'm gimping around like I'm 105. If I spent 3 weeks sitting on the beach doing zip I'd expect to get sore but I was far from idle.

I went to yoga in the am, & did a fast uphill treadmill session yesterday, a half hour at 5.5% as fast as I could go but the most I could get my heart rate to was 125. I was so sore I didn't want to run but will try later today. might do the next upper body disk, not sore there at all. but then we're going on another 5 day vacation so I'll be right back to square 1 on the leg disks. I don

Welcome back Josie. Glad it went well.

Hi Ladies,

I had to go grocery shopping yesterday because I ran out of everything. I will be relaxing tonight.

Deb, we raised 10 million dollars and 33% covers the cost of the week away and administrative costs. Most of the people that participated in the event donated their time.
One of our sponsors was Federal Express and Cannondale. Cannondale fixed our bikes for free through out the trip. My DH said that anything under 40% cost is great, because the remainder will go to the clinics to support all of the programs listed in the web-site.

Garance, I have taken zumba twice and I love it, so I'm looking forward to doing it again.

Joan, congratulations on the weight loss! I lost 4 pounds during the trip and I'm trying to keep them off. According to the statistics given to us during the trip, we were burning up between 3500 and 4000 calories per day. We did eat very well every day.

Valerie, I thought of you when we hit some rough patches on the road and was wondering how you control your bike when you are up in the mountains. I could never do that!

Hi to Cathy.

Josie

Hi Deb, Josie (High Fives!!!), Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did Jazzercise Dancin' Abs (60 min.).

Josie, I LOVE Zumba! I feel like I am really learning how to do salsa and samba. I wish there were a class around here. More and more I want my cardio to be fun and I feel like I have sort of burned out on step, which was my cardio of choice in years past. You are incredible on that ride. I really cannot imagine such an adventure, and all of the money raised is really extraordinary.

Deb, my Essential-C arrived in the mail today. I will send a check tomorrow with that MORE article on osteopenia. Grazie! Yep--I am the funny one around here. DH is in a constant state of agony over the weather because of haying, and if it's not that, it's worry, worry, worry over his chickens and predators.

Valerie, I have doms in my legs today from High and Tight. Not as bad as you, though. This summer has been pretty ho-hum on the movie front. Apparently attendance is really down, and the comedies have all been either predictable, cliche-ridden, or outrageous and silly. SATC 2 has really been a whipping boy (girl?) for critics because it seems to be a symptom of everything else going sour. For comedy, I'd rather watch old episodes of Seinfeld or Friends than some of the crap that's been released of late. I'm teaching The Last Seduction and Bound (both contemporary films noir)in the fall, and because they are really gender-bending, there is a lot of humor in both. Linda Fiorentino is in the former, and Jennifer Tilly and Nina Gershon in the latter. You might like them if you like black humor.

Joan, good for you on the weight loss!

Boy the Celts really stunk the joint out last night. Wonder if they can come back from such a humiliating loss in lala land.

Lynda... Now you're in my comfort zone. DH and I love both of those movies! we have both and re-watch them every now and then. (That's Gina) How about "True Romance" ? christian slater, gary oldman, patricia arquette. haven't watched that in a while.
watched "It's Complicated" . I was tired of everyone (even meryl Streep) by the end. just couldn't get enthused about it although it at least wasn't a gross-out fest.
I'm skipping SATC. I didn't like the first movie and this one sounds even dumber. I enjoyed the series on disk not on TV. some things that are "cute" for 30 minutes are grating over 2 hours.
I am so sore I am looking at the toilet seat dreading it.

Josie, congrats on the weight loss! Strong work. controlling the bike on the rough stuff takes practice and I have myriad bruises to prove it. a mt bike with shocks and knobby tires is surprisingly stable but it takes a while to learn what you can do and how. WAY less squirrely than a street bike. People do things on mt bikes that I can't even imagine. I didn't fall but got off quickly a few times, and jammed the pedal into my right shin. it is purple from ankle to knee so no shorts for a while.

Thursday

Good morning,

No workout again, not sure why I am so tired, I guess I will say this is a "rest" week.

Valerie, I thought I had HRM problems! No way I would be walking on the TM at a 5.5 % incline for half and hour and only get to 125. What were you using to measure your heart rate?

Josie, Cudos to you and all that participated in the ride! and good job on the weight loss.

Garance, How are those little chicks doing anyway?

Time to get ready for work, take care...
