Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 6/13

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I finished meso 2 with disk 24 for back and bis (43 min.).

Deb, those little chicks now weigh about 5 lbs and they don't even remotely resemble their early chick-peep identities, all fluff and no feathers. One more lb. to go to reach the optimal size of about 4 1/2 lbs. for the freezer. Next week is my rest week before beginning meso 3, so I will bring out those 2 lb. maracas. Have you watched any of the SYTYCD? Last night was the first time for the top ten. Really talented!

Valerie, I am also teaching Tumbleweeds, Arranged, Maria Full of Grace, Aliens, and Thelma and Louise. I published articles on the last two. This is a course on feminist theory and the representation of women in film, hence all the heroines. I think you would enjoy all of these if you have not seen them. Arranged is quite funny, and I love the mother/daughter in Tumbleweeds. The mother is played by Janet McTeer, who won the Golden Globe for best actress and was nominated for an Oscar. I'm also doing several pre-1960 films that you probably would not like (e.g., Vertigo). I taught True Romance in a course on the road film a few years back. It's really a fun film. I'm not sure I want to see It's Complicated. I have it in my netflix queue, but there are other films I want to see first.

Hi to Josie, Joan, and Cathy!

Good afternoon,

I'm still trying to finish everything before vacation. It's probably a good thing I have a deadline.

I think I told you about the pumpkin oatmeal. You can't buy any pumpkin until fall. I have switched to canned yams. It isn't quite as good but it is very filling.

Valerie Cathe's response makes sense. I think you go down much lower on squats and lunges.

I finished meso 3 but this week has been mainly walking.

I've planned some of the eating for vacation but I just hope I'm not tempted to overeat. At least not too much.

Josie Welcome back. That's a lot of work to lose 4lbs.

Joan

Joan, canned winter squash =pumpkin. seems like there was a shortage last season so I don't know if it's readily available, but most canned "pumpkin" is really winter squash.

Lynda, thank you. I love Alien, & Thelma & Louise. I think I saw "Maria". was she the drug mule from south america? don't remember it well. I'll put tumbleweeds and arranged in my netflix queue. I don't think I liked Vertigo. I'm picking up a pattern here in movies that I especially like...

I got an answer from Cathe over on the "Ask Cathe' forum about soreness. I think I understand better why I got so sore. nice to know I'm not alone.

I did the next upper body disk, 17? increased weight pretty much across the board, a big jump from my last rotation. also brief time on treadmill and bike. most soreness has faded now.

Deb, that reading was right. I have to work very hard to get my rate up above 130. hiking and biking have me used to working at medium intensity for a long time without spiking high.

Finally Friday!!

Good morning,

So glad this week has come to an end. One more day of work and then 2 lovely days off. I plan on taking a long nap tomorrow.

Garance, poor little freezer headed chicks.... I would certainly try them if you were close by. DH would be purchasing freezer loads of meat, he is a carnivore for sure. I have not seen SYTYCD, I keep forgetting when it is on. I should set my VCR upto tape the next one.

Joan, I thought you were using canned pumpkin all along, I never thought of using yams. When do you leave for LV?

Valerie, you do not have to worry about heart/cardio fitness!

Any plans for the weekend? My garden needs a lot of attention, and that nap is calling to me, so those are my only plans. Of course I have Keegan's agility class, but that is the only "committment". That is the kind of weekend I love.

Hi to Josie, Cathy, & Kathy, take care.

I'm not much of a carnivore.. I'd end up with a yard full of geriatric chickens and cows cause I'd get so attached to all of them.

Had a doctors appt yesterday mid day great, I'm up 2 lbs from january.. and needed groceries but ended up going to 3 places to get what I needed. Hate it when stores are "out" of stuff I need.

Started watching "Inglorious Basterds" last night but not for me. the violence was too graphic. DH will finish it by himself. Tarantino is an acquired taste. DH liked the "Kill Bill" series, I didn't. Watched "The Painted Veil" the 2 nights before and enjoyed it. Edward Norton & Naomi watts. Love story, cholera epidemic in 1925 china. a good watch.
Gotta get in a treadmill session today, legs are OK and yesterday got cut short. I use a Polar HRM, a strap one. the treadmill has the hand grip HRM but the strap works much better.
Today I need to get our camper ready for another 5 day vacation, the last for a while. we want to backpack but the weather this year has been the worst I can remember. we are still getting snow in the mountains and rain lower. it is cold and crummy. we have had a few nice days but mostly gray drizzle. can't drive up many mt roads yet, and the snow has not retreated much. the other trips we filled with mt biking, and it was a lot of fun but usually the weather is decent by this time and it's disappointing. the forecast is not looking too good for the next few days anyplace reasonable to drive. it could turn out better than expected. anyway, I may stop back here later today but otherwise everyone have a good weekend, I'll be back next wed.

Good morning,

Deb I was using canned pumpkin but when I used my last can (bought before Thanksgiving) I couldn't buy anymore. The sign in the store says none will be available until fall. The canned yams are more calories because they are in syrup and they have a milder taste. I used 2t cinnamon.

I have been without airconditioning for most of the week. They are here now to fix it. It can't be fast enough for me. It has been 95 and humid all week.

I leave Saturday morning and will be back late Sunday June 27.

Have a good weekend.

Joan

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did Petra Kolber's Just Dance (50 min.).

Deb, this weekend is for dads, so DH invited his father over for a cookout on Sunday. He's doing the steaks, I am doing the fries, salad, and either a cobbler or local strawberries with a bit of Grand Marner on vanilla ice cream. DH has already sold everything--all the beef, pork, and chickens in bundles of 5. I think he has really hit the wave of "buy local" craze, because people don't trust a lot of their food--how it's produced and raised.

Valerie, I am teaching Aliens (dir. Cameron), but I like Alien, too (dir. Ridley Scott). Yes, Maria Full of Grace is about a pregnant drug mule who finally decides to stay in America and watches her girlfriend Blanca fly home. She's very brave with the drug dealers. Oh, I am also teaching La Femme Nikita (dir. Luc Besson). If you have not seen this, I think you might like it. Vertigo is generally regarded as a masterpiece by Hitchcock--tons of critical literature on this one. I just find it interestingly kinky from a feminist perspective. I have mixed feelings about Tarantino. I can really get into his quotes from other films, but found Inglourious Basterds very strange in re-writing history.

Joan, we have had so little summer here I almost envy you--but I know what 95 and humid probably feels like--sticky! It's been cool, cloudy, and rainy for several days now. Have a great vacation!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Guess I'm still around... I liked both Alien(s) movies. think it was #3 dismal and tedious.. that I decided no more. we saw the french La Femme Nikita first, a long time ago, and then the american version with bridget fonda that was not as good. I'll look for that one again. I keep thinking I've seen Vertigo and didn't like it. was it kim novak? cary grant? the tall building balcony?

Hi Ladies,

I will be taking a spinning class and a zumba class tomorrow and a bodyflow or a bootcamp class on Sunday. I feel so lazy not working out since last Sunday.

We don't have any plans for the weekend, just relaxing and maybe we will go out to dinner to celebrate father's day. My DH might want to drive down to the casino.

My DD started working in my department, so we have been having lunch everyday. I like having her around every day.

Have a great weekend ladies!

Josie

Saturday

Hi all,

Agility this morning, it's absolutely gorgeous here today, sunny, light breeze, low humidity. I hope I can get some yard work done later. Still want that nap though.

Father's Day tomorrow has me a little depressed. :( I am trying not to think about it.

Have a good weekend,

Deb

Doing a bike ride here today rather than leave immediately though I got everything loaded.

Joan, have you looked in frozen food for winter squash? We grow winter squash, cook and freeze every year. It is basically "pumpkin". I know there was a shortage in the canned stuff last fall but frozen might be more available. I have lots, too bad you're not closer!

Lynda, la Femme Nikita is not available from netflix as a disk. bummer, I was going to watch it again. I took another stab at "Inglorious basterds" after DH said it was decent but did not make it thru. got a little past the bar scene where everyone shot each other and gave it up. I'm used to reading dialogue but this was too much and I didn't enjoy anything about the movie anyway. QT really likes endless pointless dialogue.
Talk to everyone later next week. Have a great weekend.
