Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 5/9

Good morning. we are taking a garden day today. a little burned out from yesterday. not sore. it is so warm and incredibly bright on the snow! parts of the road were treed, but a lot is in the open. much more intense than even sitting on a beach. we sunscreen up, wear really dark glasses... glacier glasses. mine have leather side shields. didn't see that many animal tracks snow was softening so quickly that even our recent tracks went to mush. a day planting and weeding sounds good. tomorrow we can ride somewhere. there's enough snow for us to ski this a few more times. road goes up to about 4000 feet. there used to be a trail at the end but the trees have gotten so big that we can't work our way up it anymore. we used to be able to climb up and ski into a lake basin. we might be able to hike it when the snow goes away but not with skis .
Deb just when you think they are almost human, dogs will go and eat something like poo! love them but yuck. and then we worry about their food and whether they "like it" or not.

judy I made your salmon recipe again and had it for my dinner last night. (DH wont try it) we were both tired last night. I made asparagus in the air fryer. my usual, tossed with a splash of olive oil and a little salt. the texture turned out very nice, better than the regular oven. I tried the asparagus and salmon at the same time, salmon on top shelf got done but asparagus didn't and needed a few more minutes. I have one last piece of salmon left. I'm using small squares of parchment on the oven shelf and that works nicely. the shelves are non stick but it keeps drips to a minimum.

Good afternoon. Today I did JS HiiT Walk which was 30 minutes and 207 calories burned. My average heart rate was 128 and maximum heart rate was 157.

Deb, you are one day ahead of schedule with the new thread, but it works for me :).

Diane Sue, almond milk is easy with the Vitamix. I use 2 cups of almonds, something that I always have in my freezer. And I have a nut milk bag.

Valerie, a gardening day sounds like a good choice after yesterday.

Hello to Judy and Lori.

This morning I did Lite cardio party, 42 minutes, 202 calories, heart rate 117/149, 4,055 steps. I then did Kelly Coffey Cardio Quick Fix workout #1, 25 minutes, 125 calories, heart rate 120/160, 2,631 steps. I finished with Step Boss extended Chair Stretch, 16 minutes, 14 calories, heart rate 71/109, 16 steps and Jessica Smith Gentle Yoga neck and shoulders, 18 minutes, 17 calories, 20 steps. Total time was 1 hour 40 minutes, 6,722 steps, 358 calories. Can't believe 34 minutes of yoga comes out to 31 calories  It is relaxed yoga though.
I need to get downstairs and make birthday cake and plan how many pizzas I need for tomorrow.

Valerie, hope you have a productive day doing outside work today.

Carolyn, I should look into a nut milk bag. It always felt like such a long tedius process for as quickly as I used it up :)

Good morning ladies! Happy Mothers day to our Mothers with 2 legged and 4 legged babies!

Pretty much same old same old for the past week. Still worked out everyday other than 1 rest day. Finished the first week of Barre Blend and really enjoyed it.

I binged watched the 2nd season of Dead To Me. Great series on netflix for those interested. We also have a robins nest with 2 eggs we have been watching. Has been fun to monitor and see the progression. we actually both are obsessing over them. Hahhha! One baby has hatched and we are worried about the other. Yesterday morning it still has not - so when it warms up today I will take a peek. Due to the drop in temp I try not to bother mama bird keeping them warm. Mama bird is beautiful. I was able to get a picture of the eggs and first baby but mama is quick to fly off.

Carolyn, hahha I thought the same thing about the day early on thread. I was confused that there were a few post already. Then I quickly realized today is the 10th! I liked it too!! Yes if you buy a fryer go bigger rather than smaller. We love ours! We have a Cosori and that works for the 2 of us. I love Valeries.

Diane Sue...I have a nut bag and have used it with my vitamix also. Bought it on amazon. That sounds like a terrible appt.

Valerie...we make so much in our fryer. We just made turkey bacon yesterday and it was great...list of things we have made....brussel sprouts are delicious, salmon, burgers, chicken, chicken wings are yummy. We hardly eat hot dogs but the other day I threw 2 hot dogs in (we buy uncured, no nitrates/nitrites) and wow so good! It was like the fryer transformed the hotdog!! You can pretty much cook anything, once you get a handle on temp and time. Asparagus is great...we use a just a dash of salt and olive oil and that is it. I do soak beans and almonds. Never potatoes.

Deb...oh yuck on the rabbit poop!! Who would have thought??

Judy...makes me feel better that you and Diane Sue’s hours have completly changed and it is just not me! I am really hoping I do not get called back to work for a while. If I do I need a weeks notice to adjust! Ha!! Only a few things have opened here in Massachusetts. We will start to open things on 5/18 so we will see. Still so many new cases here in our state. I am fearful we will open too soon. Would you mind posting your salmon recipe again. I missed it. Thank you!

I attached a couple of pictures of the Robin’s nest. There is a nest in this shrub every year. This year I noticed shreds of material weaved into the nest. Nature is so beautiful.

Hi all.

Happy Mother's Day!

Edited to add: today I did Lite Metabolic Blast, 42 minutes, 247 calories.

Sorry about the mix up with the thread for the week. I don't know why I thought yesterday was Sunday at first.. I guess it is part of that not knowing what day it is, with the current situation. Funny how are days are connected to all the scheduled things we do. Without them, I am lost!

Diane Sue, I hope you and the DR's are able to figure out something that will help with the dry mouth issue. I remember those Nuwave ovens! Actually, not improving, but that is a long story. Re-check of culture to make sure the infection was gone, came back with a different bacteria. I am on a new anti-biotic. sigh... Great job on the 91 sleep score. Mine are always in the "fair" rating. How has Gertie been?

Carolyn, good job on Muscle Max! Yes, John has a full time practice...at least he did!

Valerie, it's amazing that you are still skiing in May! How far do you have to drive to get good enough snow? Looks like you are getting good use out of the air fryer.

Lori, that is great that you have the robin's to keep an eye on. Great pics! Hopefully they are not too interesting to Gigi. We used to get a nest each year in a "head" planter on the side of our garage. They stopped using it for some reason.

Waving to Judy!

Take care,

Good morning!. just got back from a road ride, 25 miles in 2 hours 5 minutes with a snack break in the middle. lovely morning and quiet on the roads due to the holiday.
deb there is tons of snow in the mountains. about 90 min drive for us. people ski here most of the year if they are good skiers with right equipment, and pick destinations carefully. we are not great skiers and use high roads until they melt out, since they are not too steep. we have another month or so. because of parks being shut down, we cant get to the north cascades because road is not open, but that's where the good skiers go to ski in spring and early summer.

I don't remember Nuwave ovens at all. but I also didn't know about nut bags. this is a new thing to me. I like almond milk a lot but buy a carton sometimes, never thought of making my own.

Let me back up Lori and say "Dead to me" is fabulous!. I love that series! we are re-watching season one and will start season 2 tonight. the robin pics are adorable!. we have some nesting here too but I cant get a camera near it. I'm pleased with the air fryer. I heated some French bread last night and it turned out great and a lot faster than the toaster oven. I love that stuff but I get SMALL piece only and I want crunchy. I did asparagus already and liked the texture a lot. I have a small piece of salmon left and that will get made tonight. I think I will like fish more because its easier to watch and control the process. if you get a air fryer, a window is a good thing IMO.

This morning I did ICE Rock’m Sock’m Kickboxing timesaver #4 for 35 minutes and 264 calories burned. My average heart rate was 135 and maximum heart rate was 154.

Judy, I made that salmon recipe in the oven last night and it was delicious. I baked it briefly then finished under the broiler to get a crisp topping. Thanks for the link.

Deb, great job with LiTE Metabolic Blast. It’s easy to lose track of time these days. I look at the calendar every morning just to be sure of the current date.

Diane Sue, I hope that you had a nice day with your family.

Hello to Valerie and Lori.

wernt mountain biking this morning at the tree farm. got there early and were the only car, but by time we left there were 10 cars. too crowded. we are used to winter when we are the only ones there. we cut it a little shorter. 1 hr 45 min. we haven't mt biked in 2 months and missed it a lot but roads only. trails were open now and that's more challenging than roads. lots more obstacles and roots and generally steeper.

today is weigh in and despite my very compliant diet staying in points and all this exercise, I gained 2 lbs back. or didn't really lose it. this is exhausting. I will survive when even cockroaches are endangered.

I did Judys salmon recipe again last night. that one is a keeper. carolyn, the topping crisped and browned a little in the air fryer, another reason I like it. my broiler is worthless.

too funny . I remind myself to look at the date. I usually have the day of week right but not so much the date. same old, same old, day after day.

day I did Step Boss PHA 3, 67 minutes (61 actual), with the extended stretch, heart rate 108/144, 213 calories, 1,928 steps. I got a really late start. I had a lot of things going on this morning so that is it as it already 2. Not sure how my week will be. I am supposed to go to ladies game day tomorrow. I think my daughter needs help with moving. I ordered a new scale. I was going tho get the Fitbit Aria 2, but have read so many negative things and problems, plus it doesn't have as many features as some others. It took awhile to choose one. I tried to find something USA made, but a most are planned here and assembled in china or come from China. I read some news articles that Fitbit plans on moving their next items out of China. It seems the tariffs are causing changes. All cell phones come from China . The one I got as it works with Fitbit, Apple Health, My Fitness Pal, and Google Fit. Also uses ask Amazon Alexa which my Fit Bit has too. It also does body fat, body muscle and bone mass. After I purchased I read on Wikapedia the company is owned by France though. I didn't know till I had ordered and looked at the Withings USA and we are just one part of their company. I think they have a facility in Hong Kong. So much for being a USA company. I am all for us keeping our employment here. Withings had some ownership by Nokia for awhile. I got an Amazon gift card from my son and his family :)

Deb, I was a bit confused for when I saw the check in on Saturday had changed. Just figured I had my days off again. That is too bad you have to be on another antibiotic. I hope you can figure it out. Unfortunately my mouth has been exceptionally dry all night and all day. I guess because I ate some cheese pizza and cheese bread yesterday. Too much salt just exacerbates the problem. Gertie is doing well. She had fun with the family here yesterday. I switched her to the prescription vet dog food and she is doing well with it. I was surprised. She seems to really like it and hasn't sat here waiting for me to add pumpkin or something to it. Funny dog does not like our change in hours. It confuses her. When it was noon and I had not went up to workout yet, she went to the workout room and sat up there whining at me to come up there. She will be happy when we have family here next week too. Not all could come so we have divided the gatherings up.

I have ladies game day on schedule for tomorrow. There will not be many of us there though. We have those that are in their 80's and 90 years old that have health issues and they won't come. I am not sure if the one will come whose daughter had/has cancer. The family was at church a week ago with mask on. She is back in the hospital and the cancer has come back. They are waiting to hear if their Medishare will pay for the treatment the doctor says would be best, but very costly. If they won't, they are tapped after the first bunch of treatments. Praying they can do it and she gets better. She has a family with the youngest being 12 years old. My friend says she wishes her daughter would have went to the doctor earlier. I guess she knew she had a lump 7 months before she went to the doctor. Busy attorney I guess.

Carolyn, I will check out that nut milk bag. I wrote it down. I keep ordering things from Amazon. It seems they are at our door several times a week. I have two deliveries scheduled already. It would have been 3 but they managed to get my scale out to arrive tomorrow instead of Saturday and it will arrive with the SD card reader I ordered a second one of because my husband does not have a drive for that on his fancy laptop. The first one is lost somewhere. I ordered the Love and Planet Laundry soap. I wanted to try it as I like the multi purpose cleaner spray. I was hoping Sprouts would get it in. Whole Foods has it and Amazon. I got the spray cleaner at Big Walmart, but do not want to go there.

Lori, the pictures of the robin baby and egg is cute. We had a nest with robin eggs in shrubs once the parents would sit on the corner of the roof and scold us when we would come up to the side door and sometimes swoop down at us. They really guarded it. We had Cardinals once in our back yard shrubs and it was so cute seeing kind of pink red little babes in the nest when they hatched. I really guarded the nest from my dogs at the time because I did not want them to get at them. My dog Mudd would bring birds and squirrels she caught and leave them on the doorstep proudly leaving her present. She was probably puzzled at my reaction though.
I am getting ready to alter my hours again. My husband got a promotion and we are happy he will have weekends off now. He will have a 3 day weekend. Still works all night though. I was just getting a house cleaning routine in and am working on trying to get to bed earlier though. My husband and I both have to question each other as to what day it is. You just kind of get into this routine of going to bed when you want and sleeping till you wake and sometimes it seems like days just go by without noticing which one it is unless there is an appointment or something.

Judy, thanks for posting the recipe. I printed it up. I had salmon twice this last week.

Valerie, I think there are still Nuwave ovens. I remember looking for them at one time. I think they have changed some of their products. I was able to bake cookies in it and bake muffins and things. It had a clear cover so you could see inside. It seemed to have heat and air and did not take long to cook. I kept thinking I would take it with us in the fifth wheel trailer we had, but then the storms totaled the trailer. I finally got rid of it because it was a space hog that we were not using. I am sorry that your weigh in was not encouraging. Maybe just a little water retention. You work at it so hard.

Good morning,

Today I did LITE Stacked Sets, Upper Body, 37 minutes, 213 calories.

Valerie, that is great that you can ski for so long. I bet the weight gain is water. Had you eaten anything salty the previous day/evening before weighing? What type of salmon do you use?

Carolyn, good job on Rock'm Sock'm. Want to get some suggestions. What type of salmon did you use? How long did you cook it in the oven using Judy's posted recipe?

Diane Sue, nice job on PHA3. That is one long workout! I have never done the complete one yet. Which FitBit are you replacing? I doubt that there are many electronics still made in the USA. Sad. John and I decided that when this is all over, we are shopping for new tablets. Ours are so outdated, low storage for what you need today. I am on the fence about getting another iPad, may look at a different one. Don't you have a Samsung? I understand about Gertie and the time situation. We have a daily routine where we give the parrot a couple kernels of popcorn every night around 6:30. Of course the dogs have to get theirs as well. Around 6:15. the parrot starts making all kinds of noises, and that is the dog's signal to go to the cupboard where the popcorn is kept. They know the time better than us. Have fun at Ladies Day. Congrats on your husband's promotion and the new hours!

Hi to Lori & Judy,

Take care,

Deb I bought sockeye (filet) salmon at Costco. it was in a blister package. gorgeous. they usually have farmed atlantic salmon but I don't buy that because its so pale colored. I've used steelhead. I think that's a kind of trout that looks a lot like salmon. I'm not a fish person so not too sure. the sockeye had previously been frozen so I used it all to avoid re freezing. I will get another piece if they still have it. DH wont eat anything with bones so I skip whole fish..... not that he was willing to even taste this salmon.
no on the salty things. it is very very difficult for me to lose weight. even eating much less and exercising more than anyone else, I maintain. it's always been like this. I did it at 400 degrees for 9-10 min in the air fryer. depends on how thick the piece is.
WW shows a graph depicting typical weight loss for most. an up/down zigzag rather than a straight down progression. I have been working very hard but I also am not far from goal so it makes it tougher than someone who has 75 lbs to lose. when you are more overweight, the pounds drop off faster.... or so I'm told! yep, when the world grinds to a stop, me, rats and cockroaches will be left.

we got hot here over the weekend, mid 80's, but cooler now so we may try to ski again tomorrow. for us this is winding down. good skiers with AT gear have months of skiing left. I couldn't tolerate stiff plastic boots.

I looked up Nuwave ovens and seems they are still around. never heard of those before.

Diane sue that is still a tough schedule your husband has. I worked 3rd shift for a few years but never truly adapted to the hours. I did it... sleep was a struggle. glad to switch tonormal hours. there were good things about it too.

this is a great product. I might have posted this a week or so ago but am not sure, and Im too lazy to go back and search. .

these are dehydrated refried beans. taste better than canned. so handy. in a resealable foil bag. If you want 1/4 cup of beans fr one serving, , you sprinkle out 2 tablespoons and add a little water, micro, ready in a minute. there are several versions of these. I like the vegie ff ones. I never need a whole can of refried and hesitated to use them because I'd forget it in the fridge and throw much of it away. these are great. I buy a case of them about once a year.

Today I did Lean Legs and Abs for 51 minutes and 228 calories burned. Average heart rate was 114 and maximum heart rate was 160.

Deb, great job with Stacked Sets Upper Body. I really like that upper body workout. I cooked wild Alaska sockeye salmon, which is my favorite. I usually cook it in the oven on 400 degrees for 8-9 minutes depending on the thickness. With Judy’s recipe I cooked it for 6 minutes, took it out of the oven and turned on the broiler. I cooked it under the broiler for 2 minutes to brown the top and finish the cooking. You will need to watch it carefully under the broiler since ovens work differently.

Valerie, my weight loss pattern is similar to yours and it is slower when you are near your goal weight. When I’m trying to lose weight I might stay the same for several weeks before showing a loss. I saw that Nuwave is one of the air fryer brands on Amazon.

Diane Sue, congratulations on your husband’s promotion. I’m sure that it will be nice for you with him having weekends off.

Hello to Lori and Judy.

Good Morning Everyone,

This week I am taking a break from STS. I'm doing a week of Live workouts. Monday I did # 276, All in Upper Body and yesterday I did # 41 Legs w/Weights & Stability Ball.

Deb- Great job with Stacked Sets Upper Body! I'm sorry that you have to take an antibiotic again :(
I also used sockeye salmon for the recipe. I made it again on Sunday.

Carolyn-Great workouts this week! I'm glad I found that recipe. My husband loves it too.

Valerie-I agree with Deb, I bet the weight is water weight. Thanks for the link to the beans. I'm going to order them.

Diane Sue-Congrats on your husband's promotion. Working 3rd shift is tough but good that he will have weekends off. Great job with PHA3! That is a tough one! That is very sad about your friend's daughter. I hope she will be ok.

Lori-I'm concerned about Michigan opening too soon also. Construction and real estate has opened back up but most businesses will still be closed until the end of the month at the earliest. I am trying to get back into a more normal sleep pattern again so it won't be so hard when I go back to work.

Judy

Judy I think you and Deb are right, but it still makes me angry. I have exercised and kept my WW points in range, drinking my water, and I will "keep on keeping on" . it reaffirms what I've always known for me. what goes up... does NOT want to go down. instead of having a pity party I was grumpy Monday but stayed on plan. I have been doing a lot of endurance sports and might have put on a little muscle too.
did stacked upper body last night. planned to ski today but forecast changed and its drizzling so skipping it.

Judy I think you'll like the beans. they are in rough flakes, rehydrate quickly. we use them for backpacking too. I love to make exactly how much I need, reseal the bag. always ready to use. I never buy canned refried beans. I got my shipment yesterday. I buy about once a year. I always hated the look and sound of the canned beans. looks like a can of dog food!

businesses are starting to reopen. restaurants are going to have to keep a 30 day contact record of people who eat there, names, phones, addresses etc. I can imagine how some of the "patrons" are going to react to this and create havoc for already stressed businesses.

Cardinals are so pretty!. the rocky mountains make a dividing line. no cardinals west of them. Ive seen them in Arizona, Our cats sometimes brought us surprises but they were more focused on rabbits. Im sure they got some birds too. our one kitty grabbed an adult squirrel once. the squirrels taunt the cat, and we got them separated before anyone got hurt. but the cat had him by the nape of the neck and carried the squirrel down the driveway to us, and then set him down. he was quite the hunter/killer.

Today I did Step Boss IMAX 4 For 44 minutes and 318 calories burned. My average heart rate was 132 and maximum heart rate was 154. I haven’t done this one in a while and now I remember why. It just doesn’t have that fun factor that I look for in step workouts. IMAX 2 is still my favorite!

Today I am doing a little house cleaning and a little sewing. I am currently making headbands with buttons to use with the face masks for my daughters. The elastic bands behind the ears can be uncomfortable and they don’t always stay in place. These headbands with buttons on the side are just what I needed.

Judy, STS is good, but taking those breaks is important. I am nervous about people trying to “get back to normal”. I don’t think that our lives will be the same as they were before Covid 19. We have to reassess everything that we do In public places.

Hello to Valerie, Diane Sue, Deb, and Lori.

Hi all,

No workout today. Woke up not feeling well, napped for a good part of the day.

Valerie, steelhead is what John looks forward to fishing for every year. :). I can sort of side with your DH on the whole fish thing. I don't eat fish that has bones either. Agree, the more weight you have to loose the faster it goes. It's those last 2-5 pounds that are killer.

Carolyn, good job on Lean Legs & Abs, and Step Boss Imax 4. Yes, I have decided, for me, that both Stacked Sets Upper and the Lower are some of Cathe's best weight workouts. Great idea to use headbands with buttons. When I wear a mask, I tie a knot in the ends of each of the elastic bands or else the mask is always falling down.

Judy, nice job on the LIVE workouts. There are some great ones in that listing. So many, that it is hard to decide sometimes.

Hi to Diane Sue, & Lori

Take care,
