Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 5/3

Hi Everyone,

It's been a great weekend here. Sunny and in the high 70's. We are just doing things around the condo. DH is installing a new garage door opener. I did a short walk/jog yesterday and am getting ready to go out and try to go a little longer. It feels so good to get some sun and fresh air. So far, my hip and legs feel pretty good. I cancelled my appointment for the ultrasound. If things get worse, I'll find another doctor to go to. I do have 2 more weeks of PT left, but I am thinking about stopping that, as all they are doing is having me do exercises that I can do at home. It feels like a waste of time (and money) at this point. I honestly think that doing barre work has helped me as much as the PT exercises.

Valerie-thanks for the advice re colonoscopy frequency. Maybe more isn't always better, if there isn't a risk factor involved.

Hope everyone is having a good weekend!

Judy

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did Turbo Barre (74:00).

Beautiful weather here as well. I will do some more gardening this afternoon. Finally things are beginning to look spring-like.

Judy, that's great news about your hip and legs. How long have you been doing PT? It seems like forever.

Hope everyone is enjoying some warm rays and blue skies!

Good morning,

Today I did a treadmill HIIT workout.

Hit the garden early, spread some mulch, did more weeding, and some basic clean up of leaves etc.

Yes, the sun shining, warm breeze, just lovely to be outside.

Have a great rest of the weekend!

It seems that way to me too Lynda..it's been about 6 weeks. Will be 2 months if I finish this round.

Good morning.. did a 25 mile road ride this morning ..it was very nice out and not busy on the roads. going to hike tomorrow.

I haven't done any therapy in a couple weeks now and my shoulder feels normal now. still not ready to start work outs. I did a load of garden chores yesterday hauling a 2 gallon jug of water all over. I am hoping not irritating the area will help more than "working it over" every day. it is not bothered by cycling. I'm calling it 'watchful waiting" and staying active but not specifically working that shoulder.

my bug sting is better today. swelling is mostly gone but discolored looking large circle and still sometimes itchy.
Judy... I didn't want to sound negative about screening , but there are small risks to every procedure and if there is no real good reason to scope, why risk it? your insurance might not want to cover it either.

Finally you are all getting some spring weather!

Good morning.

Another beautiful spring day here yesterday. I am sore from doing yard work, lots of hauling bags of mulch.

Judy, if barre work is helping, then I would do the same, keep up the exercises, but stop the PT...those sessions are expensive and if you can do it on your own, why not?

Lynda, 74 minutes of Turbo Barre...wow, that is something....I don't know how you do it...I don't even want to admit this but I have never even previewed any of Cathe's barre workouts. I should try to do them, I know..but I think P-57 killed any enthusiasm I might have had for barre work. Plus, I don't think she has any short premixes on the DVD does she, just so you can get into it slowly ?

Valerie, nice job on the ride, glad the sting is getting better. Benadryl does that to me too, but if you are having an allergic reaction, it's good to have around.

Hi Josie & Lori,

Same on tap today, STS workout, then more yard stuff. I made a mix of vinegar, salt and dish washing soap to spray on the beds with stones, and between pavers to hopefully keep the areas that I weeded weed free for a bit. We'll see. With the dogs, I don't spray any chemicals in the yard. Then late class tonight,

Take care,

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did both low impact workouts together, but this time I did 2 first (48:22). Not sure which order I prefer, but the two together are a really good workout for me.

Deb, I know there is a 60 minute workout on TB which cuts the upper body weights, but I also think you could easily stop after various sections--e.g., she has a concluding floor section with some pushups, triceps dips, side planks, and abs, and a pretty long final stretch. If you cut these, you would be under 60 min. There might be other premixes. You should take a look. She also tells you to stop early on some of the legwork if you are tiring, or not to go as deep on the knees when you are up on your toes. Cathe is not this drill sergeant like Tanya on P-57.

It feels like summer here today. I think it will hit 80. I transplanted some clivia yesterday. They haven't bloomed in ages because the pot was too crowded. They have such gorgeous showy orange blossoms and I want them back. Today, yes, I will get out there and do some more raking of areas.

Good evening ladies!

So nice here the past couple of days! Yesterday I did SB classic barre and stretch. Was 55 minutes. Then chester and I went for a nice walk and he went for a swim. He was very happy! Today I did not get to workout with the ladies. My mailroom person came in but it was clear she can not do the job right now due to her back pain so she left and will be going on short term disability for a while so she can heal. I am glad for this but at the same time I am thinking crap it is going to be hell for me at work for a while. Tonight I bumped out STS disc 4. Decided to turn off her music and just have her voice and I played some Tom Petty. It was great. Not sure why I never did this before. The workout seemed to be more enjoyable.

Lynda...what a beautiful warm day. I do not know what a clivia plant is so I will need to google it. They sound beautiful. I love orange flowers. I agree that you can easily cut TB into sections to make it more manageable.

Judy...spreadsheets are coming your way! It does seem like you have been in PT for a while. I agree if you know the exercises and feel confident you will do them at home the I would stop and save the money.

Deb...way to many pushups for me in Meso 1. I needed to cut them down a bit as I am afraid to over work my shoulders. I needed to dropped my weight for the over head presses towards the end too. Felt like I had done enough of these earlier. Very smart with the no chemical weed kill.

Valerie...glad your shoulder is better. Mine seem to be doing well so far. My sting took forever to fade. Thpught ir would never go away. It did and looking it the area you see nothing.

Hi to Josie!

Judy your kitties are gorgeous... I LOVE kitties. I'm going to try again to get a pic of my little guy Puss up here. just not handy with photos.

we did a hike today. long drive, about a 6 mile hike. got into snow in the last part and it was tough. bad footing, breaking thru. so weird to be walking along and suddenly one foot is out of sight up to your crotch. took us about 6 hours plus half hour for lunch. plus a long drive each way. getting back in hiking condition. biking fitness does not cross over to hiking. lots of elevation gain, 3000 feet. we saw a grouse. heard many but one guy walked right up to us. only 10 feet away strutting his stuff. DH can imitate the whoomp whoomp of grouse well, and this one thought we were part of the family. so pretty when they are displaying in spring for LOVE.

I also need to look up clivia. not a familiar name.

I keep saying I won't talk about my shoulder anymore... but I keep doing it! it feels so good to sleep without discomfort, and all the poling while hiking didn't phase it a bit. didn't get sore from the garden work either. still nervous about doing an upper body workout...especially push ups. I am thinking that letting it rest was the smartest thing I did and no one ever suggested it. feel lucky I did it. it was not my plan, but I noticed that it felt much better in a couple days and I paid attention, and decided to continue. .

Good morning,

Not a good night last night...tossed and turned all night...ugh...nap today for sure.

Lynda, I looked up that plant that you repotted...it looks really nice. A perennial I assume, and you keep it in a pot? Do you leave it outside all year? I will look at that barre workout and see about the premixes.

Lori, too bad about the mail room person...do you have to take on her whole job, or just the heavy lifting parts? Do you know what I did? I did STS Disk #1 again, somehow I was thinking that you repeated the first 3 for Meso cycle 1. DUH! That's how long it's been since I did STS. I agree, way too many pushups, sometimes I just do the regular ones, and skip some of the variations she does, and mine are all on my knees!

Judy, love the pic! Boy do they really like each other. I didn't know cats could be like that.

Valerie, that hike sounds tough...and kind of dangerous. Great to hear about your shoulder. If push ups were what you think did it, I would skip them permanently. Not worth it and there are other all kinds of other exercises to do. Yes! Put a pic of Puss up here. They have the insert button now which makes it much easier. Before you had to import them from one of those stand alone programs ( PictureTrail, Photo Bucket etc), now you can upload right from your computer.

Hi Josie,

Not sure what I will do today, I may start the 4 hour Defensive Driving on line course that will save on my car insurance. We'll see. Definitely a nap...

Take care,

Hi. Can I join your Check-in? I have never joined a check-in on this forum, I'm a regular VFer. But I always come over here to check the threads and see what's going on.

About me. I am 56. My name too is Deb, but DB is just fine sine there's already a Deb here. I currently live in Southern IL, 34 miles from St. Louis. Retired from the Air Force after 21 years, and currently work as a government contractor on Scott AFB. One child, son, who is married, with 2 daughters, 12 and 14. They live in CA so I don't get to see them very often. Have been doing Cathe since I discovered her in 03 or so. I am an original classic Firm Gal as I started AWT with Vol 1 and was doing the Firm before I discovered Cathe at which time my Firms got moved to the back shelf. Right now I'm not doing any set rotation just trying to work out on a daily basis and do something everyday. Some days I hit the mark, some days I miss. I'll tell you more about me as the days go by.

Today's workout was Cathe RWH Low Impact Workout #2. Yesterday I did Premix #6 on RWH Upper Body. Awesome premix. She intersperses abs throughout the workout. If you haven't tried that premix yet, I highly recommend it as it is great.

Anyway, I'm at work and have been slacking off enough for now. I'll check back in later.

Hi everyone! Like DB, I'm also a long time lurker. Can I join your group, too? I will be 56 next month, and I'm looking for a group that I can share with.

I retired last year from my job as a software developer, and have happily busy ever since. I have time to work out, plus I sew clothing and quilts and do beadwork. I also restarted learning Spanish, which I had worked at on and off over the years. I live outside Chicago and have a 21-year-old daughter living at home.

I discovered Cathe about 10 years ago, and she and the LoseIt app helped me lose 70 pounds. Now I'm working on getting rid of the 20 that I put back on. I'm currently in week 5 of the 90-day XTrain undulating rotation.

Have a great day!
Dawn

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy and welcome Deb2 and Dawn--

This morning I did premix 8 on the ch, sh, tris, which includes abs with the 8 lb. weight (47:58).

Deb, I keep the clivia inside during the winter. Yes, it is a perennial, and when it blooms it is spectacular. I now have two of them.

I am a retired English professor from Williams College--also Women's Studies and Film were in my teaching schedule and scholarship. I go way back with Cathe, to her first Step-n-Motion step workout. I also did all of the early Firms. I am 68, and I try to avoid impact as much as possible for the continuing health of my knees.

Valerie, that sounds like a very difficult hike. I would probably injure myself with a drop off like that into such deep snow.

Judy, the kitties are gorgeous and look like lovers.

Lori, this whole week looks beautiful. Interesting choice of music--I like Tom Petty a lot. I remember a couple years ago there was an endless thread about the music on STS over at VF. Someone here had expressed a negative view about it and ended up being thrown off the Forum here. I can't even remember the music on STS.

Wow Garance!!! 68! You go girl! Congratulations on maintaining your health and fitness thru the years. Like you I avoid any impact workouts and stick with low to none for my cardio due to chronic knee issues. I started a thread over on VF titled "Who's the Oldest?" Haven't found out for sure yet but it turned out to be one of the most inspiring threads in a while as people chimed in with their ages and conquests and limitations and still continuing to exercise. So I'm impressed with you.

Hey Deb.. it jolts a little but isn't usually dangerous. you pick your route as best you can. just because someone else left footsteps there first, doesn't mean it won't collapse under you.... you get used to expecting the bottom to collapse once in a while. if there's running water below the snow it can be messy. normal spring conditions for us. I would not walk miles and miles postholing like this but a half a mile or so is OK and sometimes unavoidable. the snow is too patchy and uneven to wear snowshoes. Lynda, it used to hurt a lot before I had my ACL repair but now it's a jolt but doesn't usually hurt. you expect it to happen but the exact spots are a surprise.

Hi to our new people... Dawn and DB. I'm Valerie and 67. I've been doing Cathe workouts for 10 or 12 years especially in winter. in summer I tend more to hiking and riding, spinning, road or mt biking. I hurt my shoulder last Nov and am hoping to get back into regular weight workouts soon but am keeping busy anyway.

got a new timing belt put on my car today, so took a day off to relax a bit. that reminds me I need to look up clivia. I don't know that one. no movement on the phone yet. we had a bunch of other issues to deal with so it will get put off a week or two.

Good afternoon ladies!

Today was lower fix at lunch with the ladies and as soon as I walked in the door Chester had his leash in his mouth so of course I had to take him for his walk right then. We went about 2 miles he did really good. I then also did Cathe Live Boxing (her most recent) and used my heavy bag. Only did the boxing portion which ended up being about 36 minutes.

Hi Dawn and DB! Welcome! I am 53 and still working! :(. I am office manager for a casual dining company and have been there 22 years. I have one son in college. I started working out to Cathe in 1994 which seems like ages ago. I usually lurk on VF!

DB...that is a great premix and have done it a couple of times and I like by the time it is finished you have done both core workouts.

Dawn...congrats on your weight loss! I saw really good results with Xtrain.

Lynda...my DH and I love Tom Petty and since he was workout out with me thought he would enjoy it. Funny about people not liking the music in STS. It has never bothered me at all. I only played mine just to try it out and I will admit I really liked it doing weights.

Judy...your kitties are adorable! My two cats are buddies too.

Deb...yup...as office manager I oversee the mailroom and I am pretty much the only one that knows the systems and procedures. Our copier alone is a huge production machine and very complicated. Tomorrow is the heavy package day so I have already sent an email out stating I need each department to pitch in. I have come so far with my shoulders and I am not going to be doing all the heavy lifting and risk injuring them again. STS legs tomorrow. Need to psych myself up for those wall squats.

Valerie...you and your DH amaze me with your hikes.

Hi to Josie!

Hi Dawn & DB,

I'm Judy. I am 52 and have been working out since the 80's but just started doing Cathe's workouts a couple of years ago. I also spin and bike regularly. I used to run too but not as much recently. I've been dealing with a hip and sciatica problem the past few months and it is finally starting to get better.

I did XTrain Cardio Leg Blast today, after running out of reasons to postpone it all day. I made it through a lot of the cardio without stopping, but some of the intervals did me in and I had to stop and pick up when I could. Whew!
I then decided to celebrate Cinco de Mayo by making myself some chicken tacos. ¡Olé!
