Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 5/29

Good evening ladies!

Today I only did SB's challenge of the day which was Total Body Barre and stretch. Was longer than I expected, just shy of 50 minutes. My right knee is bothering me out of the blue. Going to take a break from running. Hoping running is not causing it. :(

Diane Sue...we do not have central air. Actually, I never had A/C until this house. We have a huge unit off the house that pretty much cools the entire house. It does not reach our bedroom so we have a separate portable a/c for there. Now that we have A/C we will never be without it! Glad your nephew seems to be doing better. Great that his wife will be making changes. Awesome your burnt 638 calories! Don't think I ever reached that high of a number. Yesterdays workout I was close to 500.

Deb...you are entitled to not feel like working out. I certainly have those days. I do not run outside. I tried to many times but hate it. I prefer the TM watching my Ipad. :). My Nana brainwashed me to never wear white and linen before Memorial Day and after Labor Day. Still with me to this day. I will admit I have stretched it after Labor Day at times but always felt like a rebel! Lol!!!

Have a good night all!!!

We did a 10.5 mile hike today, and I am toast. not that hard total elevation, but a lot of up and down that didn't get counted because the total gain was only 2000 feet. more warm and humid than usual. to a lake and too busy but I wanted a longer mileage hike without killer elevation gain, so this was it.

humid but nothing like Florida!. I detested FL. the company I worked for, men all wanted to go there to golf in January. I thought it was absolute hell!. the air was so humid water was running down the inside of the windows and I still could not get the room cool and dry enough. literally puddles on the floor. My hair was a frizz ball before I got from the airport gate to the luggage. Diane sue, I know all about hair doing weird uncontrollable things. head congestion, sweat, sticky blech! Never again. what a pit. SF was nicer but we were there a few times when it was very warm and it was some silly pride thing about "not needing air". well, they needed it. hotel rooms don't have any cross venting and it was very unpleasant. other times, it was fine. a lot of meetings there.

Dinner was quinoa, oasted sweet potatoes, walnuts, vinaigrette dressing and an egg. unusual but very good. It was supposed to be coconut oil but neither of us like it so I subbed olive oil. much better.

Good morning,

Yesterday I went to the track with my cousin and did 2 miles, walking, and a little jogging here and there. 225 calories.

Diane Sue, wow, that was a long workout. That's too bad about the new Polar strap...is it the soft kind with the transmitter that snaps into it? Are you going to send it back? That would drive me crazy. I can't believe that I am back to the original hard strap with the built-in transmitter and it works fine. I have to other ones with the snap on type that have not worked for a while. I am glad your nephew's wife is going to take his healthcare into her hands. I liked your dinner menu. What do you eat for breakfasts?

Lori, I hope your knee problem is not from running, but it seems like that might be it. Were you running every day? Yes, my grandmother, mother, aunts etc would never wear white until after Memorial Day, but I never heard about including linen.

Valerie, that sounds like a tough hike. I feel exactly how you do about Florida. Nice dinner, For me, I would leave out the egg and add chicken...:).

I assume Josie is on her ride...

Hi Judy!

A workout and maybe yard work...I would like to take the dogs on a nice long walk, or maybe a bike ride...

Take care,

Deb, I've added chicken to it also. I get interested in a particular food and it becomes a focus.... I've fallen in love with quinoa. I could eat it every day. DH likes it, but I've been making it a little often for him! I cook a cup of it and divide it into smaller containers in the frig or freezer, so I can have it ready to go.
I get an ingredient or a meal idea and I "work it" until something else takes over. I've been fascinated with heavy duty "salads" like this. the combo is good over greens too, any kind you like. the dressing was olive oil, thyme, a small shallot, ww vinegar buzzed in the blender. I love beans, grains, nuts, and greens together. I pulled the recipe from Shape magazine. showed up ...but I'm not a subscriber. It was written using coconut oil but I'm not a fan. tried it as written first time, then modified. I love sweet potatoes. Diane sue, you mention them a lot so you must also. I like them savory though. I hated sweet potatoes/ winter squash. my family served them syrupy sweet. once I tried plain roasted or with hotter spices, I was in love. this one they were roasted with smoked paprika. the whole thing came together in about 45 minutes after a long hard day.
I'm not sore at all today, though I was exhausted last night. I think we both got a bit dehydrated. it was warmer than expected yesterday.

Lori, running is so repetitive. easy to get over use injuries IMO. do something else for a few days to let your knee settle down. I think runners get into injuries because they keep pounding even if it hurts. I like a treadmill better too the footing is uniform, softer and more shock absorption.
Too funny.. I remember the "no white" business but I'm such a slob....... I don't wear white much because it gets dirty so easily.

DH's family lived in Fresno OMG hot!. they had some kind of "swamp cooler" a water evaporating system that was supposed to cool things. it didn't work! it was unbearable. they were used to it but I about died the first time we visited in summer. It was 105 degrees. only happened once.

Hi Ladies,

Did my usual workouts on Tuesday, Wednesday and today. Today I did Bodypump and I asked Karina for a yoga class.

We are leaving tomorrow and the ride will start on Sunday and end Saturday June 11th. I'm packed and ready to go :)

Judy, I will be posting lots of pictures on Facebook. If you get a chance can you post some of them here for me?

Garance, enjoy your trip!

Valerie, my grandkids live in Fresno and it has been very hot lately. I can not take that kind of heat.

Diane Sue, will keep your nephew and his family in my prayers.

Lori, take care of that knee :).

Deb, you can follow us on the route if you go to aidslifecycle.org.

I will not be posting while on the ride.

Josie

Good evening ladies!

This morning was SB Upper Body Core and this evening was Live Hardstrikes.

My knee feels better but still not planning to run until Saturday to be sure.

Valerie...that must have been a tough hike if you were done in after just over 10 miles. I love Quinoa too. Your dinner sounds yummy. I made our eggs Monday morning with coconut oil and we loved it. My son and my friend did too. I get it is not for everyone though!

Diane Sue...I have two chest straps and alternate. So far mine i have had no problems. Will keep my fingers crossed.

Deb...enjoy your walk or ride!

Josie...I wish you the very best and can't wait to see the pictures.

Hi to Lynda and Judy!

I am slow today. I have the cold and scratchy throat that my husband has had all week. My workout was not really long. I had my grandson here this morning. I did 21 Day Fix Extreme Lower body 34 minutes, 218 calories. I then did Cathe's Great Glutes stability ball, bonus chair, and stretch, 21 minutes, 72 calories. Total time was 55 minutes, 290 calories. I used 15's Fix Extreme lower body.

Valerie, that was a nice long hike today. I think it is even more miserable when a person goes from a cooler drier environment to a humid warm environment. I think you build a tolerance if you live in the place. I hate messing with my hair when it is hot and humid and I do not like it pulled in a pony tail. Besides when I took it out it would have a big ponytail crease in it. Your salad sound yummy. I like my sweet potatoes and squash fixed in dishes with garlic, onions, rosemary and that sort of thing. In chili recipes. I know how you feel about the syrupy stuff. My family will still insist on sweet potatoes with marshmallows and brown sugar during holidays. I have tried making two different dishes of them to avoid all that sugar. I love Coconut oil. Last night I cooked Mahi Mahi in coconut oil and had steamed broccoli with sunshine sauce made with sunflower butter. I have just started using almond oil more for cold dishes. I started making almond oil mayonnaise for my Whole 30 ranch dressing and recipes. I love it. It is not good for cooking though.

Deb, I was using a hard strap for quite awhile and it worked well but it only works with my watch that works with non coded transmitters. It is a soft strap. They sent me an email and said their straps do not generally last much longer that 18 months depending on usage. The wires wear out. I thought that was interesting. My older soft strap that you can kind of see the wires through works better than the newer ones they seem to have went to that have the smooth surface where the wires are. I don't know that I will keep spending money to send them things because I spent 59 dollars for the Blue Tooth HR7 with the strap and had to pay to send them the transmitter to check it out even though it is under warranty. It took 3 weeks to get it back. They commented that I did not send the strap for them to check. They had put a note saying not to send the strap because it is not covered under warranty. I e mailed them back and told them that they said not to send it. I will try again tomorrow since it is a cardio workout. I didn't use it today because I get frustrated with it and since I had my grandson here I did not want to waste time with it and also I did not want to have to pause it and restart repeatedly when I stop and help him with his projects he builds or the ipad.

Lori, I was pleased with my calories yesterday. I checked it with both my tablet and watch so I know it was accurate. My surgeon that did worked on my torn meniscus said he loved to run but had to quit and find other things to do. That is why my husband bought me the Tread Climber. I have not been able to use it a lot but, the recent use made my knees both hurt. I need to try adjusting the pressure etc.. before I try again. I have lots of chest straps :) I let one dry out thoroughly after each rinsing before I use it again so I switch quite often.

Josie, I bet you are getting anxious since the ride is coming up so soon. Wishing you lots of luck. I hope you don't mind me asking but, who is Karina? You mention her often and I keep wondering if it is a friend, family , coach?

Diane Sue, Karina is our trainer. We hired her when my DH retired.
My DH will not set foot in a gym or do any workouts on his own so I suggested that we hire her. He has lost 20 pounds and his tennis game has improved tremendously. He also does not have acid reflux anymore and he is eating better.

Hi Everyone,

This week I've been sticking with Spinervals and the SB Challenge workouts. Today I did Cathe Live Rhythm Cycle instead of a Spinerval. It was an excellent ride! I really enjoyed it. This is my favorite Live cycle workout now.

Josie- I will be glad to post your photos here. Good luck on your ride!

Lori-I'm sorry about your knee :( I hope that taking a couple days off of running helps. I wish we had room for a treadmill, that would be a nice thing to have. Coach Troy has a series called "Runervals" made for the treadmill and I would love to use them. I do have one downloaded to my iPhone so I can do it on the gym treadmill sometime.

Diane Sue- I hope you aren't getting sick :( I know what you mean about having lots of chest straps. I must have close to a dozen. I switch regularly too.

Valerie-I'm with you, I almost never wear white clothes, as I know I will end up with a stain or something.

Hi to Deb & Lynda!

Judy

I have a couple of older chest straps, the ones with non replaceable batteries. they still work. I lost track of which ones were sent back for battery replacement, but that must be 15 years ago. still working. I don't use them as much as I used to. I know when I'm working hard enough. today was a day off. it took us almost 7 hours yesterday. not a push for time, we sat at the lake and then sat someplace else for lunch, so at least 60-90 min were "lounge" minutes. I was so sore and fatigued yesterday I could hardly walk. gimped around all evening but woke up this morning without any discomfort at all. no sore muscles. I did get a couple of foot blisters. I think it was warmer than I realized and I didn't drink enough water. Day off today, grocery shopping, laundry. will ride tomorrow if possible.

Josie, DH's parents passed away in the last few years so only his sister and brother are still in fresno. we were there briefly this spring, but only for a day. His brother is becoming increasingly weird and sister is busy with work, so it's hard to spend time with them. Most of the year it's just too hot for me. Best wishes for an enjoyable ride!

Judy, I barely even wear solid color pastels!. I'm a messy cook, gardener, and everything else. no matter what the splatter, it's camouflaged better in darker colors and prints. white is unforgiving.
Diane sue, my flat iron is my best friend. don't know what I did before I had one. makes my hair almost look like normal! Hope you dodge the bullet and the sore throat passes you by. sweet potatoes with syrup and marshmallows are my worst nightmare. I do NOT know how anyone can eat that stuff. makes my teeth feel like they are going to jump out of my head. I don't like overly sweet things like that.

DH only runs occasionally now, and I run less distance alternating with other things. riding is less impact. I still enjoy it, but can't use it as my main exercise anymore. I need to keep knee function as long as I can.

Good morning,

Yesterday I did Live Metabolic Conditioning. Another "5" for Cathe...and this one is short and gets right to it. :). It was raining off and on so a ride or walk was not happening. I groomed Keegan and we gave them both baths instead...they were not happy about that.

Valerie, that sounds like a nice easy dish, especially when you have the quinoa pre-made. Would like to see the recipe. We have quinoa but I never know what to do with it. I love anything "butternut squash".....and I like mine with nothing it in at all. Same with sweet potatoes.

Josie, safe travels and have fun! Looking forward to the pics.

Judy, would love it if you could post some of Josie's FB pics here.

Lori, great workouts! Did you get the dishwasher yet?

Nail appointment this morning, not sure what is up later. We are tossing around the idea of going to an obedience match to practice for the trial we are entered in on Sunday, but its about an hour and a half away, actually on the trial site, and doesn't start until 3:30....if it was early this morning we would definitely go but I don't want to be driving back tonight later...

Take care,

Deb, I'll see if I can find the recipe online. should I post here? I cook quinoa a cup at a time and then keep in serving size containers. freezes fine too. I like the chipotle black bean burgers from Costco and put a half cup of quinoa in the bowl, a burger on top with some salsa or some cabbage slaw or lettuce. I use it as a main dish salad with black beans, red peppers, green onions. I like the flavor of sweet potatoes and winter squash.
quinoa needs to be rinsed before cooking, unless there are "pre washed" types out there. I put 1 cup quinoa in a 2 cup measure, let it soak for 15 minutes. pour into a strainer, rinse well under the tap. add the drained quinoa to 1 3/4 cups water in a lidded pot. salt to taste. simmer for 15 min, then sit for another 5 min with the lid on. ready to use! I like other grains but quinoa is my favorite.
ETA quinoa is actually a seed, not a grain but hust a technicality.

After running on a treadmill, it's a real shock to the system to run outside on pavement. the ground is hard and not resilient like a treadmill. when we run outside, we do a trail on dirt and grass, a lot kinder to the joints.

link to the sweet potato recipe, fitness mag, not shape. It's a very flexible recipe, no need to follow it exactly. for example, I use olive not coconut oil, and I have smoked paprika on hand, but it would be fine with regular paprika or chili powder, or plain. a bit of regular onion instead of a shallot. I give new things a try before investing in a bunch of things I don't use regularly. http://www.fitnessmagazine.com/recipe/roasted-sweet-potato-quinoa-and-fried-egg-bowl/

Deb, meant to say............. this would be fine with chicken rather than an egg. If you switch to new dishes that have more volume from vegies / grains, portion control is easier. less concentrated calories and more volume. I am forgetting for sure, but didn't you & John buy an exercise bike? How's that working out?

We rode the trail this morning 26 miles, 2 hrs 15 min.

This morning I started with 21 Day Fix Extreme Cardio, 34 minutes, 218 calories. I started 2 times, the first time getting through the squat segment. I was trying to use the HR7 again. It just would not level out on the HR. Finally the 3rd time I went back to the watch and other transmitter. The same new strap though, It worked like it should. I was pretty put out with wasting my time like that. It started out with my hr around 168 without doing anything.
I then did Ice Low Impact Sweat Timesaver mix #11 cardio 2 and core 2, 41 minutes, 254 calories. Total time was 71 minutes and calories burned 501. I also did some Fitness Blender You tube stretching. One was a pilates based cool down stretch and the other was a stretch for low back and sciatic pain. I added some extra work for the hip flexors too. This cold seems to be all in my sinuses. I am just trying to stick with lots of fluids and extra oregano oil drops in my water.

Josie, thanks, that makes sense now :) That is great that she has been such a help for you and your husband. I will enjoy seeing your pictures when you do your ride.

Judy, I don't remember the Live Rhythmic cycle workout. I guess I only did a couple of them. The ones I did were pretty tough in comparison to the dvds. I hardly wear white. I wore white once to my daughters in the country for a birthday party. They don't hold up well for wandering the grounds, pets, and grandchildren. I have stains even more quickly that I get on my messy self :) I do think the white pants look nice though. I have some white slacks/ jeans style but not twill, and some comfy capris.

Valerie, that is good that you felt okay today after yesterday's ride. I look back at trying to keep those straight hairstyles back in the late 60's and wonder how I ever managed without my flat iron. Those massive rollers that looked like coffee cans and tape to hold my bangs down. I was happy with the early blow dryers that had the comb on them to help a bit. It still wasn't wonderful though. They have a lot of product that is a lot more helpful too. I do not like excessively sweet things either. I used to love ice cream but now it is just way to sweet. When I make protein smoothies I do not add any extra sweetening and I quit using coconut water because it makes my iced coffees and shakes taste sweeter. The sweet just does not appeal.
You make me miss some of the recipes I used to make before I went to Paleo. I have a southwestern black bean pasta recipe that was always a favorite. I had to find the right store to buy the black bean pasta though. I liked the black bean burgers. I used to get the black bean burgers when we went out. I like quinoa better than rice myself. I was reading Abel James latest email post since there was a Paleo summit and he was talking about the diversity of ideas the Paleo crowd has. Then he mentioned the Wild Diet difference being different from those because it is heavier on vegetables instead of the Adkin's type plan some of the Paleo group uses. I really like his stuff a lot.

Deb, I need to give Gertie a bath. I don't think she cares for it but she will walk right into the shower. She gets" cookies" but will not take one till she gets out of the shower. She is shedding right now so I keep taking her outside and brushing her. She loves that :) I will probably use the Furminator deshedding shampoo. I do not like it much though. It seems like it makes her coat dull and she acts like it is itchy. I wonder how it makes all of that hair loosen up anyway? Enjoy the nail appointment and the rest of the day.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday, I "tweaked" my back the day before, and I wanted to make sure it is ok before doing anything else...

Valerie, thanks for the link to that recipe...it looks really good...I would definitely go with chicken instead of the eggs, but that is just my taste. Yes, John bought an exercise bike....he slacked off for a bit, but just did it the other day again. I hope he sticks with it. If he could go fishing every day, he would get enough exercise tromping around in and out of streams etc, he would not need to do an indoor bike. Unfortunately he works and the weather here is not that cooperative on his days off. Like you, I don't think I own any white pants, or slacks....only white T-tops...love those.

Diane Sue, I feel your frustration with the HRM's giving you grief. I think Polar should just send you a free new strap. I would be interested in that Fitness Blender stretch for back and sciatica. The Live Rhythmic Cycle workout was just the day before yesterday's workout. "If only I had straight hair" my mantra since I think I could speak.......hate my hair, have hated it since I was a teenager. Does Abel James have a web site? I need to do something with my eating....it is out of control. The good thing about our breed of dogs is that they do not shed...however, the bad side of that is they need to be groomed constantly....so it is one or the other I guess. :).

Hi to Judy, Lori, The Riding Queen, and the travelling Lynda!

Agility classes this morning, I am brining both dogs, Kylee needs the practice for the trial next weekend, and Keegan needs the exercise....

Have a good weekend,

Good morning ladies!

No workout yesterday. Had an early morning Doctors appt then we had a celebration at night. As you know my husband retired from the restaurant business in Februray. Since then he has enjoyed life and not really looked for work and it has been great having him home. A few things happened to come his way but no interest on his part. Yesterday he accepted a job that he could not refuse and we could not be happier. No more crazy restaurant hours, no working weekends or holidays. Yeah to a normal life. We celebrated having champange while toasting marshmallows. I know we are an odd couple. :). Not sure what today's workout will be. I may do the recent live ride that Judy mentioned was great. This should give my knee another day of no running. I'll also will do yesterday's and today's SB challenge to catch up.

Deb...no dishwasher yet! Apparently, the wood floor was installed after the dishwasher was installed so we can't get the old out and the new in so we had to refused delivery for know. We were so bummed. My son's GF's Dad is going to come over next week to remove the flooring in front, get the old DW out then we will call for delivery again. That Metabolic workout is great. I have done this one a few times. Never mess with your back. Smart to take a break.

Valerie...thanks for the link to the recipe. I am going to print this out and make it soon. I will try it with the egg! But nice to be able to mix it up and make with chicken.

Diane Sue...the Rhythm ride Judy spoke of is Cathe's most recent Live workout. It looks really good and I like it is about 48 mins. I can't spin an hour. Amazes me that Judy can go 2 to 3 hours! Great workouts as always and your sinuses are stuffed. You motivate me!

Hi to Josie and Lynda!

I have several other quinoa recipes I like a lot. I've been told the pre rinsing is necessary because the seeds have a bitter coating. I never "tested" this, assume this si true. I've seen quinoa in "combo" packages with other things that didn't need pre rinsing, so be aware and do what's needed. It's easy to make, doesn't get sticky like rice can, and whatever flavors you like will probably blend with it. I'll put in links to a couple others later. Quinoa is a complete protein. I love grain/bean/ vegetable/fruit salads especially in summer, but use them all year round. .
Lori bummer on the DW! sealing in the DW with flooring is the last thing one would expect. Congrats on DH's new job.

Deb, I used to use a straightening kit on my hair, used to iron it , and like diane sue mentioned, the giant rollers and tape. used to sleep in rollers somehow. My hair is not real curly but enough to annoy me and cause style issues, and humidity makes it go crazy. .

Judy, loved today's live Rhythm cycle. I followed with yesterday's SB Lower Body & Dynamic Stretch Cardio. I enjoyed this more than I expected too. Thought it had a stretch at the end but it incorporates a great upper body stretch during the cardio portions. After the spin and this my legs were done so I did not do today's SB hiit workout. I saved this for tomorrow. I did do SB Bis & Tris. A quick one that I love.

Valerie...would love more Quinoa recipes. I have bought pre rinsed on Amazon so it is out there. Makes it so much easier. But yes if it is not pre rinsed it will be bitter. I tried the black quinoa before and did not like it at all.

We just came back from our first outing to the Town Beach and we really enjoyed it. Going out to dinner to our favorite local restaurant to celebrate! Corn Fritters here I come! Yum!

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday I did KCM Plateau Buster for a change of pace. Today I did a 50 minute Spinerval.

Deb-I'm sorry about your back :( I hope it feels better soon.

Lori-I'm glad you liked the Rhythm Cycle. I thought you would. Those SB workouts are great. I am
really enjoying them. I'm learning that I don't always have to lift heavy weights to see some results.
After doing SB's upper body workouts for a few weeks now I am seeing some definition in my shoulders
and arms that I didn't see before. I'm only using 3-5 lbs in those workouts too.

Valerie-I am very messy too. It's best for me to wear darker colors :)
Great bike ride!

Diane Sue-Great workouts! I hope your sinuses are better soon. Mine are bothering me too. My allergies are really kicking in due to the pollen count here.

Josie-Good luck!

Here's a photo of Josie from her Facebook page. I will post them daily.

Hi to Lynda!

Deb, here is a link to Abel James website. There is a recipe link there. Also other information and a blog link. He has some apps with recipes as well. He was on the Sean T Best Diet Show that was on television. I started using his stuff before the Wild Diet book came out but, I really like the book. He gives pre prep information and how long it keeps to time to cook if you doo make ahead meals. http://fatburningman.com/ I just usually have spring to summer daily brushing for awhile then it doesn't have to be done daily. He shedding isn't too bad otherwise. I didn't think about the shedding till my granddaughter was here petting Gertie and came up with a bunch of hair in her hands. I am thankful that it is not like my daughter's Golden retriever that had the longer heavy coat. Her hair floated all over and did not vacuum up well,
I haven't went to the salon in quite awhile. My husband usually cuts my hair. He has cut a lot of the family's hair. Anyway, he found a you tube haircut he wanted to try once and I really liked it and it held up for a long time so I had him do it again. When he was out of country I had a salon I went to all of the time.

Lorie, that is great that your husband found a job that he will like. I am sure the break from the long hours and days was nice for him for awhile. It sounds like I will have some fun sounding new workouts to try when I go back to the live workouts again. I saw a lower body one too. I am not a fan of rinsing Quinoa so I generally buy the one in the box (Ancient Grains??) because it says it is washed. I have some regular and some red Quinoa. I recently used some for a parfait that was in the Hammer and Chisel book or maybe it was Fixate. Anyway, it was pretty good. My son in law had a hard time with his dishwasher when they got it because of the ceramic tile in front. He had crowe bars under it trying to lift it up and over to get it out. I think the new one slid in easier than getting the old one out. Working out hard always seems to loosen up the sinuses for awhile :)

Valerie, thinking about the rollers and sleeping on them, how did we do that?? I don't think that I could do that again. Mine is not super curly but waves. Then if I want to do a curly style it loosens and turns every way but how it was supposed to be. I just keep it straight with the flat iron. I do not feel like torturing myself trying to curl it and keeping it that way. Also, I generally do not like how it looks. I went to one of those Glamour Shots things once and they curled up my hair. My husband never cared for them. He said I did not look like his Diane. I make cauliflower rice and grits and freeze into quart size bags for recipes much like you do with the quinoa. I used to do the same with the quinoa. It is one of the best grains to use.
