Good morning,

We did a few errands yesterday, including going to our favorite coffee roaster to stock up on beans.

Lori, when Christopher sleeps downstairs, where do you do those workouts? Poor little Nilla, I am sure she misses her "big brother". A friend of mine had to put her Golden Retriver to sleep recently and the dog and cat left behind stopped eating...she actually had to have the cat stay at the vet for observation and to be fed etc. After a while they finally came back around and started eating. The vet said that pets do morn the loss of housemates.

Valerie, that's horrible about the mice and your vehicles. If they are that invasive, I'm surprised you do not have them in your house. That same thing happened to me with The Killing. I didn't realize that season 2 was not free on Prime, and as soon as I finished the first season, I wanted to continue with the second. Nope...I am still waiting for Amazon to make it free. It looks like Lynda has a way to view Prime on Apple TV...I would think Amazon would want that...they are smart when it comes to their products. I know you can't stream episodes from the regular TV stations, eg CBS on the iPad, but you can stream them on a laptop...this always irks me. I don't like a lot of the options in cars either...I don't even know how to use the cruise control....I had my other Subaru for 8 years and never used it, have not used it on this one either.

Diane Sue, thanks for posting that pic...so cute! Poor Gertie...grieving for her buddy... our cable/phone/internet provider has a service where they cut off a Robo call before you can answer it. If our phone rings once and stops, that was a robo call being cut off. It is this site: www.nomorobo.com and see if your provided is listed. If so, they have a set up process through your provider that will stop the robo calls. I smile every time my phone rings once! Of course this is only if you have a land line. For some reason the "IRS" scam calls are not trapped as robo calls...not sure why this is.

Lynda, that is really scary about that woman with the "IRS" call. I feel for the poor unsuspecting older people...my Dad was a very intelligent person and he could be talked into stuff on the phone...so that mistress of Ted Hughes was trying to cause you trouble?

Hi to Judy, & Josie,

John is going fishing. I need to get a workout in, then maybe drop in to a class this morning to practice with Kylee. We are entered in a trial on June 5, and no classes in between now and then to practice. :(

Take care,

Good morning ladies!

Wow yesterday was hot! We have a local pond/recreation area for Town Residents that we have never utilized so we decided to check it out yesterday. We need a new swim area. We used to go to the Inn down the road but they sold the place late last year and no longer offer the passes. :( We were bummed because we loved going there on really hot days. This new place is still close by and will work for us. We are thinking about buying paddle boards at some point. Never worked out yesterday. The boys were up rather early all things considered and one thing lead to another. Going to do yesterday's workout today.

Deb..I have a little family room that is off the kitchen where I relax, watch TV,play on my Ipad. This is the room I am planning to do a barn door. It is small but still plenty room to do a kickboxing workout. Speaking of the barn door when I was visiting my brother a couple of weeks ago we were talking about my project. Just so happens he has an old door he will be removing to open up a room. This door is perfect for my barn door. Next time he visits he will bring with him.

Valerie...that is terrible about the mice!

Lynda....crazy hot yesterday! Last night, we rewatched last week's GOT. Christopher was blown away by the movie screen set up. Looking forward to tonight's episode.

Tonight my son is coming over and his GF's parents will be here. Originally Nicholas was unable to come but it worked out. Very happy to see him. We are playing cards then a fire outside amd of course GOT. Will be a fun night.

Deb, I do not have a land phone. We just have internet service with Cox Cable. That would be gratifying to get one ring and know you didn't waste your time answering. I heard something on the news about an elderly woman who had an IRS call and went out and purchased 17,000 dollars in iTunes cards. It is hard to believe someone would think it was really the IRS when they are demanding iTunes cards. My Dad gave out a lot of money for political stuff and. I think he finally realized they wouldn't leave him alone after that. He called them "those cotton pickers" and said they won't be getting any more from me. We found a lot bank statements and papers where he had given money. Also he was kind hearted and prone to helping people.

Lori, that is too bad about your swimming spot. We have 3 neighborhood pools. The one close to us is often empty so it is nice to take the grandchildren there. It overlooks our small lake and you can watch the ducks and geese from the cabana.

I have to go load up my stuff for the birthday party. Both children turned 16 this week. Today is my rest day :D

Hi everyone--

This morning I did PHA (peripheral heart activity) (52 min.). I agree, Deb, a great workout that I will do again.

Deb, at one point Hughes was seeing three women and he called them A, B, and C. A was married but getting a divorce, B was married but in an 'open' marriage, and C was 20 years younger. When he married C (after A had killed herself and her daughter by Hughes), the VERY NEXT DAY he went to his second home and had sex with B. He told her he had married and B was pretty angry. He left her to go back to his home in Devon with the children and his new wife. In a letter I read down at the Emory U. archive, he writes to a friend that there was a huge fire at his second home and he was sure B had set it. B has denied this charge many times and a few years after I read the letter, she hired a lawyer who insisted a disclaimer be put on the letter, and Hughes agreed to it. The footnote tells this story, and that is why there is a CORRECTION on the online version of my article because B was predictably PO'd. I didn't know about the disclaimer, but I had wondered why, when Hughes's selected letters came out, the editor deleted this portion of the letter.

Valerie, Kim is constantly fighting off mice in his various vehicles, so I totally sympathize. The other problem at this time of the year is birds who want to nest in his barn. He patrols and regularly dismantles nests. They just don't give up. He also has an ongoing war with a red squirrel couple. Max totally ignores rabbits, but give him a groundhog and it is all out WAR. Same with voles--doomed by Max.

Diane Sue, I loved that picture of Mudd and Gertie. Gertie, as I said, must have a giant-sized canine superego. I have a friend who gives 5 dollars here, 5 dollars there, to myriad political and social causes, and I told her that her money is probably being completely used up by the mailings and phone calls she gets from these various causes and to stop giving. 16 will be doubly sweet today.

Lori, yesterday was brutally hot, but it cooled off nicely last night. Nice that you are having a good time with your friend. GOT tonight--yes!

Hi to Judy and Josie!

Good morning,

Yesterday I did Live Metabolic Mash Up....another 5 rating! a really good one. 51 minutes and 312 calories burned. I rarely burn over 300 calories, and not with a weight workout. Later, we stopped for a bit at my cousins for a while, she was having a get together at her pool, snacks etc.

Lori, that is so nice that you have a place to swim so close to you. Wow, how lucky, your brother getting rid of that door, just when you need one....:).

Diane Sue, how was the party? I can't imagine someone thinking that the IRS would want you to buy iTunes cards! That is really gullible. No local or neighborhood pools here. There are public pools in the city, but they are not relaxing etc. Way too many kids screaming and running around. If I was more of a pool person, I have 2 nieces and now my cousin with beautiful pools that I can use anytime.

Lynda, which PHAT workout did you do? Why is Kim opposed to nesting birds in the barn? Is it the mess they make?

Hi Valerie, Judy & Josie,

A workout, maybe a bike ride. I have not had my bike out yet...then not sure what is up for today. We still have a lot of mulch to lay down, but it looks like it might rain.

Take care,

weird about mice. If you google mice and car engines, it's not uncommon. all kinds of problems mostly in rural areas, also with farm equipment. rodents in general eat funny things, or drag in leaves, branches, shred Kleenex, upholstery fabric for a nest that can cause a fire when the car is started. some wire coverings are made with derivatives of soy products that they find tasty. I've read that at hiking trailheads in places in Canada, porcupines are a problem. go under parked vehicles, eat wiring. people used to bring along chicken wire to run around their vehicles while parked so they didn't come back and find out things had been eaten. at any rate, I went to a local co op for mouse traps. they have all kinds of devices and suggestions to repel rodents. electronic devices to Bounce dryer sheets. who knew?? this is the second time for us in a year. we think we brought mice into the garage last year when we moved the truck inside for the winter. we used the truck to go to MT, parked outside on a gravel pad for about 5 days when I vacuumed. At any rate, mice chewing on wires can cause significant engine damage so we will check often for them. still no idea what is drawing them into the engine compartment. it's a 2009 model, and we had no issues until after a "big service" approx 2 years ago. makes us wonder if some newer material was used that attracts them.

Lynda, Bloodline was Ok but was needlessly repetitious. there are good people in it and the south florida atmosphere is well created. It just dragged on and on, with people doing really stupid things and drinking too much. IMO it would have been much better condense to half the episodes. I was tempted to FF. sissy spacek's talents were pretty much wasted. not sure I'll do a second season unless the story pace picks up.

Deb, it's hard to decide. if a series isn't good, you can watch the first few epsodes and cross it off your list. If it IS good, the smart thing would be to wait until several seasons are available. All more complex series are better if you watch in when all seasons are available.... but who has that kind of self control?
I used to use cruise control all the time 20 years ago, but traffic has gotten so much worse, there's hardly ever a place for it anymore. I know several people who got into difficulties with the "keyless" start business.... my neighbor started his car, ran back inside to get something, accidentally leaving keys in the house door lock. got to the shopping mall and got a warning that he could not restart his vehicle if he shut it off. so his wife ( my friend)had to sit in the running car while he got what they went for. One of those things that could never happen if you needed a key to start the car. our cousin has a keyless one too and did something similar. Don't know what you'd do if you got to the airport or some place several hours away. what if you needed gas to get back?

Did shopping yesterday. then 20 on the treadmill, some leg floor work, 60 knee pushups , and core 1. sort of an compressed workout to feel like I did something.

I typed this sunday but somehow didn't post it. the mice seem to be gone. don't understand what is going on. we are not over run with mice especially this time of year.

Hi everyone--

This morning I did both Sweat workouts (46:13).

Deb, I did the earlier PHA workout. I have done both and like the earlier one better. I thought this was the one you did. 8 exercises repeated 3 times, then a core section she also repeats. Kim has his freezers and walk-in freezer in the big barn where customers come to buy meat, so he does not want to have bird droppings everywhere. He also stores feed grain and hay bales and would prefer to keep them unsullied. I don't think he minds so much about the little barn where the calves go for shelter. There is also a bird (I think it is some type of swallow) that uses mud to cement the nest, and it likes to try nesting by our upstairs bathroom window, and it's no fun to have the window splattered with mud.

Valerie, thanks for your take on Bloodline. Might try it if I can find the time. Busy reviewing old foreign films Plath watched. Kim is in a constant battle with mice. He likes these big gray clapper traps and puts a bit of peanut butter on them as a lure.

Lori, GOT was good again last night. Loved Daenerys flying in with her dragon. Sorry you lost your pool privileges.

Memorial Day really does mark the beginning of summer this year. Now we can all start wearing white.

Today I did 21 Day Fix Extreme Plyo, 31 minutes, 208 calories heart rate 121/150. It wasn't too bad. I used 8's for most of the workout. I then did 21 Day Fix Extreme Pilates, 33 minutes, 139 calories. I like the use of the tubing in this and how it works the core and lower body, I finished with Ice core 2 and stretch, 17 minutes, 57 calories. Total time, 81 minutes and calories 404 calories. I want to write up a plan for this week so I don't have to think about it when I decide to start working out. I hit Sprouts again. I looked at MCT oil but really wonder how different it is from virgin organic coconut oil.
I got bad news from my brother. It seems his son is in the hospital. I think I had mentioned that he really heavy like his mother. He has cellulitis, heart problems, liver problems, and possible blood clots. I feel bad because he has two small children. My brother lost his oldest daughter when she was a teenager. She drove up under a truck. My brother was the emergency volunteer that came upon the accident. I know he is terribly worried.

Lynda, it was 85 when I went out today. I need to go out and trim the hedges but I am really dreading it. I read your abstract on Sylvia Plath and found it interesting how she loved cooking and food and the changes after her husband left.
We had swallows once and they annoyed me a lot. We had a brick arch over our front door and they kept building their nests there. All of that drippy mud and bird poo all over the doorstep and rug. I put a wind chime up by the door hoping it would frighten them away but it didn't. I put up bird spikes but they were too big for such small birds. I then cleaned it and put some sticky stuff that goes on like caulk over it and that worked for a little while. They are tenacious and will return to their chosen nesting spot every year. One night I got up at 2 am and one was sitting on the wind chime. I know I probably looked like a crazy woman if anyone saw because I was outside in my pajamas. with a broom and can of hornet spray. They didn't come back. I was so tired of cleaning up the mess. It would run down the glass storm door. Mentioning wearing white makes me think of a movie where the woman couldn't stand it because someone wore white after labor day. I wore my white sandals for the first time this year to my daughters house.

Deb, I rarely burn that many calories with a weight workout either. Even when they are supposed to be metabolic. Where we live there are not a lot of children. The home owners have their own pool keys and we all keep the gate closed and locked. They recently changed out all of the locks so past residents didn't come and use the pools. My daughter in the country has a beautiful pool that looks out over the hills. I find it funny that her son, the 5 year old, keeps asking me when we can go to the pool. My daughter laughed because he has been swimming in theirs. He probably hopes I will bring his cousins with me to play. I really would not go there just to hang out by myself. I have seen a couple of people do that. I don't try to tan or anything. I will sit with my feet in the water or in the shade of the cabana.
The party was nice. There was lots of goodies. On top of the ice cream cakes they bought out stuff to make smores. I only had a small piece of the ice cream cake. We played games and visited. My granddaughter's boyfriend came and joined the family fun :D

Valerie, I hope that you can figure out something with those mice. What a nuisance that would be. I cannot imagine having to carry chicken wire around to protect the car.
My little Chevy Spark does not have all of the gadgets. Not even the ability to unlock the doors without a key. It has warnings though. We had a Dodge Charger that my husband would start while in the house to warm it up. I think it was a bit of a problem because he had all of those gadgets and he kept having to reprogram them. It even had the ability to share with his cell phone.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday, we did some yard work, but not enough to count as a workout.

Valerie, I hope your mice issues are gone. Strange, with all the vermin we have around here, and the cold weather, no one has ever mentioned mice getting into a vehicle. Prime does not have the TV show Bloodline...they do have some strange movie though. I would not want a "keyless entry" type car, for all the reasons you posted. Way to many things can go wrong.

Lynda, I think I like the earlier PHAT workout better too. The Metabolic Mash UP one is really good as well. I don't think I would want those "mud slinging" birds around either....LOL. The "wearing white after Memorial Day and before Labor Day" rule was followed pretty strictly when I was young...I don't think kids now would even know what you were talking about.

Diane Sue, sorry to hear about your nephew...I hope he is ok. That was horrible about your brother finding your niece...so sad. Are they living far from you? I have to say, the only gadget I love on my car is the auto-starter. It was so nice when I was working, and when it was dark and snowing when we would leave work, I would have it started and the ice and snow would already be melting when I got outside. Didn't have to use it much this past winter.

Hi to Judy, Lori and Josie,

Hope everyone had a nice weekend,

Take care,

Deb, my brother is in NE about 9 hours from me. My nephew is in Idaho. My brother should be in Idaho with him by now. They drove all night. The cellulitis had moved up his leg when I talked to my brother last night.

we are off to do a ride shortly. would rather be hiking but DH forgot to tell me about a prescription I need to pick up for him, and if we drive somewhere and hike, I won't get to the store today. so hiking will be tomorrow instead.
Diane sue, that is unfortunate about your nephew. a bad list of problems to have. Hopefully he can get things under control in a hospital.

Just as quickly as they showed up, it seems the mice are gone. we have wall to wall mouse traps in the truck, and Bounce dryer sheets on the floor. all kinds of tricks to repel mice...for every one you read about that works "fabulously well", there are 10 people who say it doesn't work at all. we usually use snap traps with peanut butter. also some sticky traps since during the previous siege for some savvy mice that avoided the snap traps. nothing happening though. It's possible we picked up a mouse in a campground on our last trip, but still doesn't explain the fascination with the engine.
I think a remote start would be nice in cold weather. we are never cold enough here for it to be an issue. I'm not anti technology, but sometimes we don't realize the potential for unexpected problems. I don't use the phone while driving, it is too distracting for me. If I really need to take a call, I pull off.

I know I saw something in the newspaper about a second season of Bloodline... may be Netflix?. I can't believe how much of BB neither of us remember at all. must have been half asleep on the first run, or accidentally skipped some episodes. we streamed an episode last night and it had subtitles, something not available on the DVD's. a few characters are hard to understand, Hank and Skyler especially.

Hi everyone--

At Deb's endorsement, I did Live Metabolic Mashup (51 min.). This one is very good and upper intermediate as opposed to the ICE total body metabolic, which I think is truly intermediate. My last workout for this week since I am headed out to California.

Diane Sue, sorry to hear about your nephew. I hope the bacteria causing the cellulitis is not antibiotic resistant. It must have been very hard to be the EMT for your own daughter. 85 degrees is okay if it is not humid. That was the problem here for the past few days--very humid. My son keeps telling me that it will be hot in California, but it is a dry heat. We also will be out on San Francisco Bay Friday and he says it is a micro-environment and much cooler than where he lives in Cupertino. But hot again on Saturday when we go to Sonoma for a wine tour and to visit some castle at the winery. I guess we are also going to some sushi place on Friday that is very special--Akiko's.

Valerie, Bloodline is definitely starting a second season streaming at Netflix. It was in EW's most recent issue as one of 99 things to do this summer. Pretty positive review.

Au revoir for a few days, ladies!

We had a break this morning from storms so I hurried my workout so that I could run errands. I did 21 Day Fix Extreme Upper Body and Hardcore Abs, 45 minutes, 196 calories. I was not feeling real motivated today anyway. I think doing that Pilates workout with the tubing yesterday left my upper body a little weaker because I was sore when I got up this morning and struggled using 10's for lights and 15's for heavy's.

Deb, my husband liked his auto starter for cold weather too. The only thing is the Dodge Charger was not a good car for ice and snow so he would take the Escape to work instead.

Valerie, I think that I would have used several methods as well for the mice just to assure that they would be gone. I have had mice get off of those sticky traps. I am hoping my nephew comes through this and works on his health. When he had posted on facebook how proud that he was of his wife when she started a Beachbody program and was losing weight, I was hoping that he would join in too. His mother is diabetic and a large woman. She was warned when he was a child that his health was not going to be good when he got older. He was a large 10 year old. How can you keep encouraging your child to eat like that when you have been warned. No excuse. A couple of years ago we were visiting them and my nephew was talking about how he had lost some weight and she was encouraging him to eat cheesecake when he refused :( I know I mentioned some of this before. It just makes me sad for him.

Lynda, I haven't purchased the Ice metabolic workout. I read reviews on Amazon and they sounded like it was good but fairly easy compared to a lot of her workouts and hardly got the heart rate up at all. I liked the Metabolic Mash up live workout. My brother's experience was rough and every year when October comes around he posts such sadness about the date of their loss. I think they came out of it pretty well though.
It has been storming here a lot of evenings. That makes it pretty humid. I think the place we lived that was the worst for humidity was near Houston. I used to think Southern California was humid when I would go there from Phoenix. I always thought the desert area was so much more tolerable with higher temperatures than what we experience here. It sounds like you have some nice plans ahead. I have only been to San Francisco two times.

Diane sue when you listed the problems your nephew has, the first thing I thought of was Type 2 diabetes. so important to get control of it right away, if he has it. a young person has a decent chance of reversing type 2 if they eat right, lose weight and get regular exercise. so sad when you hear about family members undermining each other like that. a mother no less!.

I've been to san Francisco numerous times. some of the downtown hotels used to not be air conditioned! imagine that's probably changed by now, but being close to water it was kind of a "tradition" to not have air. I didn't like it because it sometimes was pretty warm in spite of close water. plus the air dries the air out so it's not too humid. I don't do well with humidity. I thought Florida was absolute hell.

we did a 32 mile ride this morning and now I'm pooped. it was lovely out.

Maybe the pace of Bloodline picks up. Both of us struggled to sit through some of the episodes where they seemed to go over and over the same stuff. Was not that complicated. no spoilers about how season 1 ended. just felt ridiculously drawn out for the time they needed to fill.

Good evening ladies!

Did not work out yesterday. Our guests did not leave until 1:30 AM. Had way too much fun. Needless to say after we cleaned up it was after 2AM by the time we got bed. Today I ran 2 1/2 miles then did the last 2 days of SB's challenge to catch up. Felt great.

Diane Sue...very sad about your nephew. I will keep him in my thoughts and prayers.

Lynda...yes loved GOT!!! Today was beautiful and my last day off. Back to work tomorrow. :( I liked that metaboloc workout a lot. Seems like with all the running I have not done many Live workouts. Starting to miss them. Have a great trip. Beautiful what you are doing with your sisters ashes.

Deb...funny I like the Phat 2 better than the first. I agree kids nowadays have no clue about wearing white and linen from Memorial Day through Labor day. I still follow these rules.

Valerie..great ride!

Hi to Judy and Josie!

My Nephew's cellulitis has lessened a bit. They are keeping him longer and doing tests.

Thanks Judy

Valerie, I think it is probably good he is in another state. I was reading his wife's facebook and she is a Beach Body Coach now and has a challenge group. I gathered from reading that my nephew has worked out with her because she was thanking him for being so supportive and working with her. She just started a challenge with the Hard Corp. Maybe there is hope for him. That was a nice long ride today :)
I know a lot of people in California when I was young did not seem to have air. I guess my Aunt in Bakersfield had an air cooler than kind of made her house feel damp but, it felt good compared to the desert heat. Florida is miserable. I have been there quite a few times. We went on vacation one year and went to Epcot . We rented a car and drove up the coast. We stopped at Cumberland Island in Georgia. It was nice and quiet, and there were horses wandering the beach area. I think it was around San Francisco where we went to China town when I was 12 and ate in a tea room there. My mother bought all kinds of lanterns and things and went back to AZ and decorated their bedroom in an oriental setting. She had cousins in San Francisco.

Lori, I have a hard time working out with no sleep as well. A rest day was definitely in order. You made up for it :) I think a lot of the old dress rules stay with us. I can't even think of any rules the younger generation may have. I am sure there must be something that they will carry through life but am clueless as to what it would be. Maybe for them there are not rules. That reminds me of my husband trying to tell the grandsons that they need to dress up nice when they go in for a job interview. I swear if no one said anything they would wear everyday casual clothes like jeans and a t shirt or shorts.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday. Not sure why, was not feeling it for some reason. I hope to be back on track today.

Valerie, I hope that was the case with the single mouse. We used those sticky traps once...never again. We seem to have luck with the snap traps and peanut butter. I can't imagine a hotel without A/C, but in San Francisco, it usually doesn't get that hot. I guess if you were by the water, the humidity would be the issue. I hated the weather in Florida too....can't imagine how people live there year round.

Lynda, safe travels. Yes, SF is a lot cooler than Cupertino. Cupertino is right around where John's parents used to live. (Saratoga).

Diane Sue, I can't imagine you not being motivated to do a work out...:). Good to hear your nephew is doing better. I hope his wife's change in lifestyle helps him change his too. I know what it's like to have a family that encourages eating, and will not take "no" for an answer when they offer dessert etc. The DR told John yesterday that he has to lose weight....this is very hard for him, he loves food, ( so do I). As for weather, I really liked Tucson when I was there...no Bad Hair days...LOL.

Lori, are you starting to run outside now? I don't really follow the "white before Labor Day" rule strictly any longer, but my Mom, Aunts etc were the generation that lived by that rule for sure.

Hi to Judy & Josie,

Take care,

Today workout was a nice long cardio and yoga. I did Ripped with Hiit Low Impact Hiit both workouts mix, keeping the stretch active, then I did Ice Low Impact Sweat workout 1 skipping the warm up, 71 minutes, 540 calories. I used 5 and 8# with the Ice workout. I then did 21 Day Fix Extreme Yoga, 30 minutes,, 98 calories. Total time was 1 hr 41 minutes, 638 calories. :D I got my new strap from Polar. It started out high and I was about ready to just figure it would not work. Well when I was setting up it decided to straighten out to normal heart rate start up. It worked throughout the cardio but, when I stopped and started with the Yoga it quit working. My HR registered around 175 through most of the yoga workout till the last few minutes and once it went to 0. I just took the three readings I had with my watch and went mid range on the calories burned since the times I did this it ranged from 95-104. It is odd how new HR equipment will work right out of the package and then go nuts.
My nephew is being released from the hospital today with meds and oxygen. His wife says there will have to be lots of changes made.

Deb, I usually do workouts out of habit and motivation grows once I get started. Once in awhile I just feel like I don't want to do it. I probably should take a day off but, I forget that I can do that :p The humidity when we went to California and were near the beach just made my hair wave in all of the wrong directions. I would have to fight to not have my bangs curl up in a flip. I like to eat too ;) I just have to make sure it is generally healthy stuff. My husband likes to eat but as I mentioned before our appetites are very different. Yesterday I grilled chicken for dinner for both of us but, I had steamed broccoli with sunshine sauce and he had mashed potatoes and corn. Snack was a chocolate shake for him and me grassfed yogurt with tart cherries and grassfed whey. So there are the differences.
