Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 5/28

Valerie, I keep picking up the wrong remote and pushing buttons since I got the new dvd player. Both remotes are about the same size. My old dvd player had a big long remote. It is so frustrating trying to go back to where I had left off. Then sometimes my heart rate monitors are all still running while I am messing with it. I wouldn't sleep with mice either. I am always typing something and having to go back and look when I see someone else comments and wondered why I would post something like that. The corrections that are made are weird at times.

Good evening ladies!

Today ended up being a rest day. I woke up with the intention of working out but GiGi would have none of that. She missed me and I missed her so she had my attention for a good hour. Then when it was time to get ready Nilla knew it was her turn so she was in my lap while I did hair and makeup. I guess I was missed! :)

Deb...good to know you liked KCMs raw lower workout. Tomorrow I plan to do this workout after whatever BBS Dance workout is scheduled. So far I have no buyers remorse for the streaming sites I have.

Caroyln...we have done a few of Leslie's walks with my lunch ladies. Was a lot of fun. Sadly, most of my workout ladies have left the company the last 6 months so unlikely I can get new people to workout with me. I have started to convert all my DVD's to digital and love it. I have a laptop that is just for my workouts(was my son's that he gave me when he bought his mac) and this is by the TV. I also have 2 hard drives with all my workouts. One is always plugged into the laptop and the other is my backup. Always good to have a backup. At the Cape I brought an hdmi cable and used an apple adapter so I could play my workouts on the TV.

Valerie...perhaps if I was 20 years old I wouldn't mind sharing the space with others but not at my age now. No thank you! 40 mins is a great workout. I sometimes too hit the wrong button several times in a row. I get so fustrated with myself when this happens!

Diane Sue...I need to look up the shock cardio workout you did. I can't remember it. Oh what fun doing today's workout with your grandchildren. I bet you loved it.

Have a good evening!

Good morning,

No workout yesterday. Once I took John's car in at 8:00...I didn't want to do start anything between that time and my class at noon. Then after class I was too tired.

Carolyn, that really was a Blast from the past! Dis you use the creamy dressing or a vinegrette?

Valerie, my TV streams well in the basement, but not sure how your house structure is set up. Can you use your iPad in the basement on the net? Does your house wifi work with that? If so, streaming should work.

Diane Sue, did your grandchildren like To the Mat? Thanks for the info on the shutdown of the FitBit. I will see if it works. Right now it won't do anything. I think its dead. I went over and printed that honey mustard dressing...it looks really good. I think you can change the setting on the iPad etc so that it doesn't just "make up" a word from what you type. It shows the error in Red and then you can go back and select what you want it to be.

Lori, how cute that the dogs missed you so much! I am amazed at how organized etc that you have your workouts and tech stuff! Smart to have the digital downloads on a back up.

A DR appointment this morning, ( ENT re-check)...then agility class tonight...

Take care,

Today I did Jari Love's Get Ripped and Chiseled. This is a low weight and very high reps workout. The heaviest weight that I used was 10 pounds. Total time was 66 minutes and 346 calories burned. I used to do the Get Ripped workouts all the time until I discovered Cathe.

Deb, I made the creamy dressing in the recipe for broccoli salad. I use FF greek yogurt and light mayonnaise. Does the Fitbit need to have the battery charged? Maybe he needs to set it up again in the app or online.

Diane Sue, the kale salad sounds like something I would like. I might add it to my list of recipes to try.

Hello to everyone and have a great day.

on this remote, the play button is above the stop button. the up/down/right/left button is separate, above the play button. I feel like a very slow learner when I hitting the "stop' button! it turns the dvd off, back to TV. I have done it a lot of times! need to start over with the beginning credits etc. I have done this too many times to not be embarrassed!
basement TV is in an alcove below the chimney and wood stove. 2 floors above. there is no reliable signal in that corner. maybe the metal shielding around the wood stove plus brick from chimney. when we had cable, it worked. now that we use an antenna and streaming, very poor reception. DVD's are fine so I stick with what works. the TV is ancient (Sony) but still has a fine picture & sound. we would have to pay for another device connection, buy another apple TV to see if it would work and with the mechanical barriers I'm not positive it would. ipad doesn't work in that corner either. one end of the basement does, but not in the exercise room. as you walk toward the room, you can see the connection diminish.

re cabins...some people talk half the night, people snore, might bring music or their phones. or pot. no water or bathroom facilities. so unless you are alone, it will be a very up close and personal experience. it's a "given" that all cabins have mice. just goes with the territory. many times we have hiked to lookout cabin. they usually are up high with a huge view ( previous fire lookouts) but keep it to a lunch visit. most can't be 'reserved" so you are always taking your chances. even if it was reserved, if another party shows up at 9 pm, you can't tell them to walk 6 hours back to their car! people who plan to stay in a cabin lighten their gear usually leaving a tent at home. just an awkward thing I'd rather avoid.

I try to read what I've typed before posting but sometimes you see what you think you wrote. later the typos are more obvious.
I ended up taking a rest day yesterday. errands got out of hand and stores way busier than I expected.

these are some pics from our last mt biking trip. the pink flowers are bitterroot. they always grown in rocky hot places that look like nothing would grow,. the flowers open from the little brown buds shown also. leaves appear later. the other flowers on the ride were nice but not spectacular like last year.

Today I did Strong and Sweaty Ramped Up upper. I used Cathe's weights for most of it. A bit lower on chest and higher on some shoulders. 52 minutes with having to stop here and there, and 225 calories. My 3 year old grandson had to share my bench with his 3 lbs. This was intermittent with his attention span. Olivia the 9 year old stuck with the s pin bike and went 7 miles. She had write all of her st a ts on paper from the spin bike read out.

Lori, that is sweet that that he dogs miss you. Gertie will stick to me like glue for awhile, like she is afraid I am going to go away.

Deb, I will have to check out the word correct feature. Maybe try charging the Fit Bit up and then shut it down so it can reboot. Has it been updated? Fit bit has a lot of updates it seems and new features came in recently. I hope your ent. check goes well.

Carolyn, I like kale salads with red grapes and apples, some form of nuts, celery at times, dried craisins, cranberries, blueberries, or cherries, always some onion, and a homemade dressing tossed in. Once in awhile I throw in some avocado. That is my favorite salad.

Valerie, we still get buffering at times even though we replaced our router and I I use 5g for our streaming and we are not in a basement. We have the next to the top end of the Internet speed. It should run well, but it still has problems at times. We end up having to shut down a ll other devices. It makes no sense to me. My new dvd player remote will not let you push the play arrow to play. You only use that to play when you pause. It has you push a plus button in the middle of the up/down and left/right buttons, I forget almost every time and repeatedly push that arrow button. I like privacy. Sharing with complete strangers would not be good. Sometimes I come back and read and will find errors and correct them.

yellow flowers are balsamroot, purple ones lupine. there are a lot more but they are smaller and don't show up on big scenery pics. the bitterroot ( pink ones) are so amazing because they will cover these dry, burned out looking hilltops for a few weeks in spring. Love them!.

the trail is a lovely single track. this part is pretty mild. some other parts are pretty hard. it was pretty but also warm. we usually ride it earlier in the season, but the pass was opened late this year. we usually ride it in april.

Good morning ladies,

Yesterday morning was a rest day. Had planned to workout but GiGi was not having it. She woke us up at about 2am and just wanted to play and would not settle down for a couple of hours. Needless to say we are exhausted!

Deb...I can see why you would want to skip your workout. I would cry if my external hard drive crashed! I have heard this happening so made sense to have a back up.

Carolyn...I have never done a Jari Love workout. I am not sure now what we have for internet we have upgraded a few times. All works great though..

Valerie..very nice pictures. Every now and then I reread a post of mine and can't believe all the typos! Cracks me up. How cute that your grandson had 3# weights. And wow good for your granddaughter doing 7 miles! Good job! Nilla has been under my feet sonce we came back. I have tripped and kicked her (by accident of course) yet she is still there. Breaks my heart when I kick her. I immediately pick her up and tell her how sorry I am. She always forgives me. :)

About to workout now..dance cardio and one of the raw lower workouts.

Have a great day!

Good morning,

No workout yesterday, but did go to agility class last evening. ENT re-check found nothing has changed, He said I do not need to go back unless something goes wrong etc.

Carolyn, that sounds like a good series of workouts. Not sure about the FitBit...he put it in the charger overnight, but it is not going on at all now. :(.

Valerie, nice pics! Thanks for posting.

Diane Sue, that is great that your grandkids are interested in exercising. Good to start this early. I think I will try a kale salad, I have never purchased kale before.

Lori, so funny about Gigi waking up and wanting to play. I guess it was not humorous when it was happening though. Poor little Nilla... Because she is so small, I can see where it would be hard to keep from stepping on her when she is underfoot.

Maybe some yard work this morning, not sure yet if a workout is going to happen...

Take care,

Lori, I understand about accidentally stepping on Nilla. Poor Gertie gets her paw stepped on once in awhile when she gets underfoot. I have accidentally turned working out and she has been smacked in the nose. She is so forgiving though. I too apologize and hug her. Sometimes I give her a cookie. She will look at me surprised and come for her hugs. Mudd used to whimper and whiin and hold up her paw to milk the attention as long as she could. She was so funny.

Debbie, I remember my daughter's back up external hard drive crashing. She had backed up her school files for teaching on it. She was terriblybupset, Lorie has a good idea , backing up on more than one external drive. I only have backed up my pictures. I should back up everything. I love kale better than any other salad green. My son said he never cared for salad till he ate kale. I shred it up we it my hands as small as I can, no stems or hard pieces.
One book I I have says to put a little olive oil on it and massage it to soften it a bit. I don't do that though. I ran out so yesterday I made the apple broccoli salad and used the Fixate honey mustard dressing with a little added vinegar on it, since I already had that dressing made up.

No workout today. It was midnight again when I got into bed. I did not sleep well due to the allergies and sitting outside we it the grandchildren every day. Also had to get up very early for my grandson to come before his dad went to work.

My kitty decided he likes chicken. he likes it a lot! he never would eat 'soft food" but I'd only tried soft cat food.... silly me. he likes plain cooked chicken, from a can, or off a piece I've cooked. I give him a bit cooked unseasoned. he is underfoot a lot more lately. he knows what the can looks like. it's funny since he never was motivated by food before. now cruises the kitchen, winds around my legs, sits in my chair, waiting for me to bring him his little bit of chicken. it's just the last month or so. he will eat a little piece of cooked white fish too. he follows right on my heels when I bring dinner plates to the table, so I've started bringing him a little bit of chicken on a paper towel. so funny, he now eats 'dinner" with us. he is locked onto t me as soon as he sees the can come out of the frig. He is a strange little cat, very connected to us. he acts more like a dog than a cat. he has been stepped on a few times too!

did some garden work yesterday, not enough of a work out but that's all I did. our house is finished. needs a last load of gravel on the driveway. we will probably be heading over there soon. I am really nervous about this. we will rent a u haul and take all the "recycled" furniture and household goods to get started. will need to buy some things but want to see what the finished rooms look like first.

I've tried kale a lot of ways. I haven't been excited about salads. I like it cooked better but I have to deal with DH who doesn't like it raw at all, so there is an uphill battle if I mention it. I've used it in main dish salads along with nuts and grains, more heavy duty ingredients. as a plain green salad (with dressing) I have liked but not loved it. Baby kale is IMO better for salads. it's usually in the prewashed bags or plastic tubs. diane sue do you use baby kale or the heftier kale sold by the bunch? I didn't think massaging it made much difference but I had DH complaining loudly. I'm growing kale in the garden but still tiny. not a fast growing crop. Our broccoli that I was looking forward to is not doing well this year. it was cold and wet most of the time, and then a sudden warm up and much of it bolted. instead of forming nice tight heads, it sends up a spindly one that goes to flower almost immediately. now we are back to cold and wet so the spring harvest will not be good this year.

Today my workout was a Jessica Smith 30 Minute HiiT Walk followed by SB Barre Amped Barre Power Stretch.

The Jari Love Get Ripped series were my introduction to metabolic workouts. They worked very well for me when I was trying to lose weight back then. I love the earlier workouts (2006-2007) but didn't care much for the Body Rock and Revved and the other later releases. Her metabolic workouts are very different from Cathe's but they are still tough. I like to go back to them periodically for a change. Jengolf, who posts elsewhere on this forum, has some Jari Love reviews on her blog 2lazy4the gym.

I love kale salads. The first recipe that I tried was from Eating Well and was for massaged kale with olive oil, lemon juice, and Parmesan cheese. I haven't tried adding fruit and nuts, but I think I will.

Enjoy your afternoon.

Valerie, that is a shame that your broccoli is not doing well. I like to buy the curly kale and tear it into small pieces. Once in awhile I will purchase a bag of the baby kale and add a bit to my salads. I like the curly kale better myself. I tried the lacinto kale once and did not like it. I had read that it was softer, but I did not find that to be true. I just buy the baby greens for the nutrition. That is great that you are finally getting ready to move some things into your second home. I am sure you will be pleased when you are all done. How sweet that your cat has decided to join you for dinner :)

Carolyn, I think I have pretty much all of Jari Loves workouts, unless she made some recently. I am trying to remember the last I purchased, there was a Boot camp and then I believe there were 1 or 2 after that one. I liked most of them, but wish she would have used decent music. No excitement or fun to these, but they work. Also, she had those that claimed up to a 1000 calories in a workout and I was always lucky if I hit 500 calories. I still have them and have contemplated pulling some of them out. She uses pretty light weights compared to some of her companions on the workouts.

Good evening ladies,

This morning I ended up doing my BBS dance rotation scheduled but then decided to do a SB adv total body barre instead of the KCM Raw. I used heavier weights for the SB workout than she does plus I used 2# ankle weights. Talk about feel the burn. When I came home I did a SB bounce using 2# ankle weights and I held 3# dumbbellls. Total time workout time was 71 mins / 416 cal. Right now I am at 10,039 steps.

Deb and Judy...I updated the Cathe Live list and posted. I have been workong on it here and there for the past month. Been so insanely busy at work and have not had a chance to update. I use to update during my lunch but unfortunately, I have been working thru lunch the past few months. :(

Deb...glad the results came out no changes. How have you been feeling? Do you think whatever was causing your symptoms might have just gone away? Hoping so. Yes we were not very happy with GiGi at the time! Agility class is a workout!!!

Diane Sue....Nilla is always at my feet. More so now that she is older. Amazes me I have not broken an ankle tripping over her or even really hurting her. She is so resilient. That is why I have 2 hard drives. I would be devasted if I lost everything!

Carolyn...very nice workout combination today! I love that power stretch.

Valerie...Nilla went thru a period that she would only eat chicken. Pluse she liked me to hand feed her!!! Of course I did. :(. Then she was into cat food. Now she is back to Dog food and will only eat Purina One but had to be ground. I have never had a dog as fussy as her. I have tried so many different brands...store and from the vet but Purina One is what she likes.

Have a great night all! Hi to Judy and Caitlyn!

Did total body metabolic later today. we helped our neighbors with building a new outbuilding, so it was late before I got going. I have been slacking off a bit with workouts in favor of riding, and it is easy to tell. it felt hard today.
Puss chowed down his chicken again today. so funny that for 15 years he had little interest in food. just ate because he needed to.. but he really LIKES chicken. he is just all over me when I come with the paper towel with his tablespoon or two of shredded chicken! Lori you are right, most dogs will eat anything.... happily. even things that aren't good for them. cats are pickier. Puss is skinny and never ever seemed to care for food much. just ate his kibble. Our previous kitty ( puss #1) was sick and I needed to tempt him and fresh plain chicken got his interest so I went back to that again. none of our cats would ever eat fish. not sure where that idea came from.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday...maybe starting over on Sunday.

Diane Sue, thanks for the tip on using kale...I will pick up some this week. I printed that dressing...I like that it doesn't have mayo in it.

Valerie, sorry your broccoli crop is not doing well. That is so cute about your cat and the chicken. Our dogs are food hounds, especially Keegan... so every time I go into the kitchen for anything...they are following me just to see if in case, something may be taken out of the frig or a cupboard. When will you go to the new house for a longer time? I wonder how your cat will take to it?

Carolyn, the kale with olive oil, lemon juice and Parmesan cheese sounds wonderful.

Lori, thank you so much for updated the Live list! especially with how busy you have been recently! :). I still have bad days with heartburn...I am still trying to track everything to see what could be a trigger. So far, I have a list of "possibles". Nice workouts!...sorry you skipped the RAW KCM one though....wanted to see what you thought of it.

A nail appointment today, then going to the outlet mall with my cousin.

Take care,

Ha Lori, this is close to, but not quite, hand feeding! I put the chicken on a piece of paper towel, and he is just all over me, jumping on and off the chair, and diving right in when I set it down. this is so funny because I previously bought several cans of expensive cat food to try to get him to eat more. would not even taste it, turned up his nose and walked away. this is completely different.

Deb, we will cut off the broccoli shoots and the plants will send up side shoots. every year is different. we will have broccoli! so sorry that the heartburn business is not resolved after all that testing.

we want to stay at the new house for a week to two weeks at a time. maybe longer, will see how it works. we can drive a car rather than a camper... easier, faster, cheaper. will have a place to stay that is 'ready', so it should eliminate a lot of packing and stressing. no idea how the cat will like this. he will be an indoor cat there. too many predators. he has never gone on a long car ride but we think since he isn't going to the vet, it will work out. he won't go with us until we get settled. our first trips will be short.

diane sue I agree on the lacinato kale ...also called dinosaur kale. I grew some last year and it was tougher than the curly kind. cooked, it was the same. DH really didn't like that one. he doesn't like strong flavored greens. arugula gets a negative from him. I like all that stuff, so if I want some I need to make 2 salads.
