Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 5/28

Today I did Jari Love Get Ripped to The Core for 66 minutes and 319 calories. Average heart rate was 110 and maximum heart rate was 151. As with all of Jari's workouts, this is light weights and extra high reps Most of the exercises were compound moves.

Diane Sue, I agree that Jari does not have that fun factor with engaging personality that I love about Cathe. I didn't buy Body Rock--it just didn't appeal to me. I have all of her dvds up to Extremely Ripped 1000. I did have very high calorie burns early on but I was totally out of shape. I think that our bodies become more efficient as we increase fitness.

Deb, I'm sorry that you are still having problems, but at least you have the list of possible problem foods.

Valerie, I like lacinato kale to cook, but I prefer the curly variety for salads. I'm very excited for you and the new house.

Lori, thanks for the updated live workout list. I previewed Thursday's workout, Athletic Conditioning Live, and it looks fun. I might try it tomorrow. It is a bit long, however.

Hello to Judy and Caitlin.

I had a good workout today. I started with STS Shock Cardio Hiit 30/30, probably the easiest one, 29 minutes, heart rate, 124 average/ 155 max,(this seemed low for this workout) I sometimes wonder about my Fit Bit. I used an estimated 186 calories from various devices. Map my Fitness had it at 208 and Fit Bit had it at 137 which I have never had doing this workout before. I then did Coffey Fit Raw You tube Hips and Glutes 32 minutes for me, (her camera stopped before the end and the workout is around 25 minutes) I also had to change up some weights and write down the moves as I went. Next time should go more quickly. 141 calories. I finished off with another of Kelly's Raw workouts, upper blast, 34 minutes, 153 calories. Heart rate 106/ 140. This really makes me wonder what was going on with the Hiit workout. Time was 94 minutes, 525 calories, 3949 steps
Raw Hips and glutes timed (I think 30 on 10 off the same as with Upper Blast) I think Kelly said she is using 22 # barbell and she uses no ankle weights but says you can, she just doesn't want to make the stop to go across the room to get them.
squats 4 sets 35# barbell 12,13,11,12 reps
Hip lifts shoulders on the bench 35# barbell 12, 12, 11,13 reps
Deadlift 25's 12 reps
Deadlift to squat to stand 25# barbell 4 sets 7 reps
pizza push using step 5# ankle weights 13 reps right and 13 left repeat
Hydrant with hands on the bench 5# ankle weights 14 right 14 left repeat
alternating straight leg lifts out to the side hands on the bench 5# ankle weights 4 sets of 14 reps
alternating pizza push 4 sets 5 # ankle weights 14,14,12, 12 reps
Seated on step knee ups 18,18,18,24 reps the first set I still had on the 5# ankle weights but decided I needed to eliminate them She did not get to finish all four sets and I went on with it.

Upper Blast 30 on 10 off
Barbell Bench press 35# 22,22, 25,24 reps
seated shoulder press (Kelly starts with a 25# barbell the first set then moves to dumbbells)
12's 14 reps, 12's 14 reps, 10's 16 reps, 10's 16 reps
flys 15's 4 sets 3 at 14 reps 1 at 15 reps
lateral raise 12's 11 reps, 10's 12 reps, 10's 12 reps, 10's 12 reps
skate curls 10's for all 4 sets 12,16,16,16 reps
hammer curl (squat, curl, jump) 10's 4 sets 7 reps
barbell rows 35# 17reps,18 reps, 20reps, 20 reps
Dips 28,24,22,24 reps
seated reverse flys 12's 11 reps, 14 reps,15,reps,15 reps
skull crushers 15's 12,12,13,13 reps
seated bench knee ups 18,19,20,22 reps

Lori, that is great that you updated the Cathe Live list. I just pointed someone to it who got a year of the Cathe Live for her birthday. Dogs do seem pretty resilient. At least, the don't whine and complain like humans would. They are so sweet and loveable. Instead the rip your heart out when they look at you in surprise that you did it. That is too bad that you are finding yourself working through your lunch hour. They are lucky to have you there.

Valerie, my other dog would eat anything. She was only hesitant once when the vet put her on some pale bland looking soy dog food for awhile. She sniffed it over and over and nibbled at it. Normally she had her food gone in seconds. I could always tell if she was really sick , because she wouldn't eat. Gertie is different, spoiled I guess. She will leave her food sit if she doesn't care for it. She will skip several meals holding out if she doesn't get the Tablespoon of pumpkin mixed into it. She will eat it if I stir some chicken bits in it, but I try not getting it started. She holds out when the little grandchildren are here, I think hoping they will drop something or give her food. I make her go outside when they eat. I think they are all different. Arugula does have a strong taste. I like it best with a vinaigrette or Italian dressing. I don't mind so much having a bit of it mixed in with other greens though. There was a dressing in the first P90X book that was a vinaigrette with shallots in it and balsamic vinegar that was used on an arugula salad and I loved it. That was the first time I had hunted down arugula to try.

Good evening ladies,

This morning was the BBS Dance scheduled plus 2 lower body BBS workouts. Each of the lower body were only 10 mins...but wow!!! I was feeling it. Used 1# ankle weights for the Dance and 2# for the lower. I am definately doing this rotation again alternating their dance workouts with their jump workouts. Was a lot of fun.

Valerie...Nilla loved her chicken when I was making it for her but then one day I found her eating cat food like there was no tomorrow. Figured hey at her age she can eat whatever she wants. Then I ran out of canned cat food so I gave her a can of dog food and she loved it! This has now been going on about 6 months!!! I have tried all different brands and the purina one is what she likes. I think you have not slacked off at all with workouts. You and your husband are amazingly fit. If I had the choice I would chose a bike ride or a hike any day over a dvd!!!

Deb...thank you for understanding how busy I have been. I started updating that list so many times! Glad I was able to get to it. Going to try and update more often at least for the summer. My son started working at my company a couple of weeks ago. Until they get him set up with filming training videos he has been helping me get out of the weeds with some admin stuff I just have not been able to get too. I have been busy at work at times but the past few months I am just flat out overwhelmed. Something has to give! Good you are tracking things with your heartburn. Have you discovered anything that really triggers it? Was going to try for the raw workout tomorrow but I thing the new Live workout may be calling my name!

Diane Sue...yes I will say you had a great workout day!! Did you like the raw workouts? They do look great. I just have so many it is hard to do everything I want to. Funny she did not want to get the ankle weights. Great you shared the Live list. Very happy people like it and refer to it.

Carolyn...Glad you can use the list. Completely forgot you subscribe to Live. Yes the new workout is a long one. I may skip the core (I know ...shocking) and move on to another SB or BBS workout. :) Light weight and high reps have really changed my physique and I love the results. My thighs and arms have never looked better. I always had really thick thighs but they are so shapely now.

Have a great night all!

Lori, I think that Kelly just didn't have time with the timer going off to stop and get the ankle weights and put them on. I had two pause to switch up some weights since I was not expecting some of the moves like when she switched from the deadlifts to the deadlift squat move. I started out with dumbbells and switched to the barbell because it was easier to get into the squat with the bar over my knees. Next time it will go faster. So far I have liked all of the raw workouts. I understand with having so many workouts to choose from and it being hard to do all of the ones that you would like to do. I have a lot I want to do.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday..hope to start back on track tomorrow.

Valerie, yep...animals sure do have their favorite foods.

Carolyn, I agree...Cathe's personality is what makes her workouts even better....I like her in the Live workouts a lot.

Diane Sue, I didn't realize KCM had more RAW workouts! So Hips & Glutes uses a BB exclusively? I have to go look at them and add them to my YouTube list...I stopped putting the pumpkin on the dog's food...it seemed like Kylee was not liking it any longer, would not eat her food...and I could not figure out why. I took the pumpkin away and she is eating again....Dogs!

Lori, I hope that work settles down for you. I think you need to tell that new CEO that you need an assistant! My "food trigger" list is ever changing. Sometimes things bother me and other times they don't. Hard to figure. Definitely very spicy stuff like hot sauces, and cocktail sauce.

We are thinking of going to the farmer’s market this morning for eggs and cheese, and anything else that looks good….then agility class later this morning…

Take care,

Deb, yes, on the hips and glutes it is a barbell. I think she has 4 workouts that are raw no we. I have done them all. The first one th a t had kettlebell swings in it with lower body weight was the hardest to me. It has some cardio work intermingled in it, the upper, the one with her brother doing heavy bag rounds or just shadow boxing with some light weight drills, and the hips and glutes.

We rented a u haul trailer yesterday and loaded all the house stuff we are taking over. to the house. some new stuff, some used. thought it might be hard to fit it all in so got the loading done. we have plenty of room.
DH finally connected with our builder. turns out the "road guy" dumped a load of gravel to spread on our driveway. then his truck failed. so there is a big pile in the driveway that won't get moved until Monday at soonest. so not leaving sunday as planned. would be a total downer to drive all that way, get to 1/4 mile of the house and get stopped! pulling a loaded trailer we won't be agile, and the driveway is difficult to begin with. so a few days delay. all I did yesterday was carry furniture and boxes so no formal workout.

I have to load up on gigantic amounts of fiber. what is just fine some days is too much on others, so not feeling too lively today. we planned on a ride today, but delaying until tomorrow. I also got some sore spots from metabolic total body. or moving boxes. not sure which.
Deb, so irritating that you can't isolate a particular problem food. but of course if it were easy, it would be easy! and it's not.

I like arugula..... tastes like sesame to me. DH hates it. I've tried to sneak little bits into salads but he tastes it and picks it out. not worth arguing about. he also hates cilantro, radicchio, parsley. kale barely gets a pass occasionally. Tarragon, lavender, licorice are the things I can't stand, so we all have our dislikes.
I love cilantro and put it on my dishes separately. with guests I always ask before using. people sure do split into "love it" or "hate it" . he is willing to try things but if he doesn't like it, that is the end of it. I have a selection of hot sauces and salsas that are mine only.

I'm just stopping in to say hello to everyone. Today is a rest day for me. I went to the hair salon and a little housework is on the schedule for this afternoon. Valerie, it's good that your builder told you about the driveway before you started out on your trip. That would have been so disappointing.

I love most leafy greens, including arugula. I eat a lot of them! I make a farro (grain) salad that has arugula in it that even my very unhealthy relatives like.

Lori, I had similar results with light weights and high reps. Before that I didn't think that my thighs would slim down and that I was destined to have a heavy lower body. Now I like to have metabolic workouts in my rotations because they work well for my body type.

Take care everyone and have a great day.

Good afternoon ladies!

This morning I did BBS dance only from her Hips, Thighs,Buns DVD. There is a 6 min segment on this where you put a fire loop on above the knee. After I went thru this section I redid on the Jumpsport to mix things up a bit. The entire BBS cardio workout was only about 21 mins. I then did her arm section from her Signature DVD. Great upper body workout. I continued on with SB's Feel Good Tabata. This was a really great total body workout. Then lastly it was 2 short bellicon workouts. Total workout time was 78 mins / 504 cal. Was a fun workout today.

Deb...never made it to the raw workout! I had good intentions but the high reps were call my name! I love Cathe in the live workouts! She makes you feel like you are right there with her in her gym. I would love to go there one day for a live class. One of these days. Hope you enjoyed the farmers market. A coworker of my husband owns chickens and sells the eggs. We are on her list and get a dozen every week. Guess she has more than she can handle so looking for people to take them.

Valerie...well that was really nice that he called you to warn you of the driveway. Would have been a disaster if you did not know. I started eating riced cauliflower a few months back and pretty much have it 4 or 5 times a week all different ways. It really has helped with my digestion issues I had. I feel like a normal person. This is the only thing I changed with my diet so it must be what has helped.

Carolyn...nice you received similar results. Right now I am loving my workouts and completely addicted to that burn!

Have a nice day all!!

Today I did STS Shock Cardio Athletic Step stopping at the floor stretch, 41 minutes, 338 calories, heart rate 1vg. 141/ max 175. I then did the last (third) combo, upper blitz, lower blitz, core conditioning and stretch from MMA Boxing since I did not do the last segment last time, 26 minutes, 119 calories, 106 avg. heart rate/ 154 max. I think that when there is core and longer stretches on workouts it really takes the average heart rate down. I am not sure that the calorie burn would be as accurate. Total time was 67 minutes, calories 457 calories. I had to be done earlier since we went to a yearly retired officer reunion luncheon that started at 10 am for socializing before the catered lunch and other activities. It was fun.
I was going to do the heavy bag bonus workout on the Boxing dvd and add some from Kelly's Body Design weighted kickbox but I am feeling yesterday's workout so decided to hold off.

Deb, I guess our dogs are like spoiled picky children. I hate it when Gertie won't eat. I worry she is sick, and then she is just holding out. Whenever there is guests she goes through some not eating jag. I am getting her habits figured out though. Generally I go outside and check the yard for grass eating or loose stools, any signs she is ill. Then I just let it go and she misses a couple of meals till she decides to go ahead and eat her food. The bad thing about stirring stuff into it is if it sits, I have to throw the whole thing out. I have removed it once in awhile and put it in the refrigerator to try later.
It is odd how the reflux can hit. I had started having some again and finally realized it happened with the ALA/ALC supplement I was using to help the nerve damage. I also researched and many people that were using this was having the same ill totally wiped out feeling I kept having. I quit taking it recently and now I am having that burning stinging pain through my neck and shoulder. One day it had moved up into my jaw and yesterday it was running like a wire up into the back of my head on that side. I was hoping it would mend itself by now. Anyway I know strong dark chocolate causes reflux. It is a battle figuring it all out.

Valerie, that is too bad that you rented the trailer and cannot move your stuff yet. I would imagine loading the truck after the workout would leave some soreness. I like cilantro in cooked foods more than adding it to a salad or something like that. I tried endive and watercress in some salads and have decided those are not for me. I put watercress in a recipe for a salad and found myself trying to dig the bits of it out when I ate the salad. I will never try it again. Most greens are fine though. I bought tarragon for a fish recipe once and I think that bottle has been sitting here for a couple of years. I did not care for it. I tried a kombucha tea with lavender in it. I was not impressed at all. I won't buy it again. Licorice is good as a candy, but I do not care for it in my teas. There is some along with marshmallow in my sleep tea and I don't like it. It has a slight sweet taste. I think some people find certain foods stronger tasting than others. Just like those that can sit down and devour a hot pepper, no problem, no sensitivities while others would be on fire.

Carolyn, I have some farro that I have not cooked yet. I should do something like that with it. I don't even remember what I purchased it for. I keep finding things like that that I had purchased when trying more of a vegetarian diet and they have passed their expiration date.

Diane Sue, you can google the recipe which is from the New York Times. It is Charlie Bird's Farro salad. The farro is cooked in apple cider with bay leaves which adds a lot of flavor before you start the salad. It also has thinly sliced radishes. I use a no sugar added apple juice instead of cider.
