Good morning,

the play was a hoot! "Blithe Spirit" a Noel Coward comedy. :D.

We wend to Home Depot and got a few flowers, looks like I will be in the garden most of the day.

Have a great "rest of the weekend"!

Hi Deb and any later posters--

This morning I did High Reps (65 min.).

Finished my papers yesterday. Yippee! Today I have a letter of recommendation to send and my office needs a major cleanup. Then home to do some weeding.

If anyone is interested, there is an article in this month's More magazine about how to lose weight with walking. Basically, you need to pick up the pace so that you are doing at least 4 miles per hour, and gradually, you need to get to 5 miles per hour to really burn some calories. Very good hints on how to speed up incrementally, common mistakes (not longer strides, but a really strong heel-toe kick from behind), and some brief stretches for shins and hips.

Yummy dinner last night. If anyone wants my totally sinful cobbler recipe (also the easiest), let me know.

Love Noel Coward, Deb!

Garance, I will definitely take the sinful cobbler recipe...and I am heading over to More magazine on line site to see if that article is there...thanks!

In the yard/garden all weekend. It does look beautiful now.

My walking is just a little over 3mph. I need to walk more and then worry about faster. I have read an article that said how fast you walk at our age was a sign of how long you will live. Of couse the faster the better.

Good morning,

I am off today (yay!), We spent a lot of time in the garden yesterday too, and I am sore. My one foot it really sore, not sure what caused that. We also went to a nursery and arranged for a yard of stone to be delivered on Thursday evening. We are both off Friday so we will be wheeling that around to fill in some beds that have lost stones over the years since we had them done. Of course, 2 dogs running through them doesn't help either.

Joan, if I was doing straight walking I would probably do 3.5. I can go up to 4.0, but for a short time only, and higher than that, I have to jog. I could never understand how anyone could walk at a 5.0 pace. Also, each treadmill is different. If I am on one at a gym, I can walk at a lot faster pace, I think the better ones are set differently or something or maybe they are smoother running.

To the vet with a sample, then to my friends who I usually would meet for breakfast, she has to babysit today so I am going there instead.

Take care,

Hi Ladies,

My ride went well on Sunday. Just one more weekend of training before ALC Can’t wait!!

On Saturday I went to Venice Beach and walked 6 miles, I needed to buy a big bag to carry my things for the ride and they always have them there for $25.00. The bag that I used on the first ride tore, so I decided to have some fun and check out all the weird people and work up a sweat at the same time ;)

My chatty co-worker has been gone since last Thursday and will be back tomorrow, so my office has been so quiet and I have accomplished so much without her constant interruptions. I’m sure she is going to have a lot to talk about tomorrow 

I forgot to say that I won an I-PAD 2 last night  I bought $100 worth of raffle tickets to collect funds for the ALC ride and wrote my whole family’s names on the 20 tickets and I won.

Hi Joan, Garance, Valerie and Deb!

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, and Valerie--

This morning I did After Burn (54 min.).

Okay, here's the cobbler recipe:

pre-heat oven to 350

Put one stick (1/2 C.) unsalted butter in an ovenproof dish 9x13 and put it in the oven while it is heating to melt (watch carefully--although I have had equal success if the butter gets slightly brown).

Put 2 cups berries (DH likes blueberries best, but I have also done blackberries and raspberries) in a small bowl and toss with 1/2 C. sugar and one Tbsp. butter. Microwave exactly one minute on high, so that the sugar is slightly melted and the berries give up a little of their juice.

In a larger bowl, mix 1 C. sugar with 1 C. self-rising flour (it must be self-rising, not regular flour). When mixed together pretty well, pour in 1 C. milk and stir until blended.

Pour the batter on top of the melted butter. Sprinkle the berries on top. DO NOT STIR. Sprinkle 1 Tbsp. sugar on top and put in the oven and bake until the batter is golden (35 min. is usually enough) and it has risen up, through and around the berries.

Deb, there is another article in MORE I think you would like. It's 6 dermatologists describing their skin regimen, what they use and what they recommend. The article on walking is different than what I saw online.

Watched Cairo Time last night. Really slow.

Cannot wait for Cathe's new workouts. I have a feeling I will be modifying, though, because she says there's some impact.

Garance, I went to CVS for a few things and was checking out the More magazine. It must have been last month's ( it was May) there were no articles like you described. Maybe you have the newest one...?

Good morning,

We got home late and I did not get to sleep until almost midnight. I am very tired today and wish today was my day off. Anyway, just 2 more days and then a nice long weekend.

Josie, how nice that you won the iPad after putting all your family member's names on the tickets. Did you mention where you sleep on the ride? do you carry a tent with you or are there cabines etc along the way?

Garance, thanks for the recipe, it sounds delicious. I must have seen an old More magazine, will stop again and look for the June issue. So who do you predict is going to win DWTS?

Hi to Valerie & Joan,

Take care,

Hi Ladies,

Today I will be spinning in the evening. I want to start planning my outfits for the ride and set the things that I need aside so that I don’t forget anything.

Deb, if you go to aidslifecycle.org and look under life on the event you will see how we live for the whole week. They provide us with a tent and we bring the sleeping bags and a queen size inflatable bed and our clothes and toiletries. Our gear and tent is loaded on a truck and moved to the next town. It is like our own moving little town with a store, medical services, food services, showers, bike repair etc. We also have an option of staying at hotels along the way, they call this the Princess Ride:)

My co-worker is back and the peace and quiet is gone :(

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, and Valerie--

This morning I did LIC (51 min.). It was 63 degrees with a 63 dewpoint and that's why I felt rather breathless I think. Very muggy here.

Deb, yes, it's the June issue with Madeleine Stowe on the cover. May issue has Chelsea Handler on the cover.

Josie, I would probably do the princess route and stay in hotels. It sounds too much like camping out for me. I am such a wuss! Too bad about your co-worker. I would probably just tell her that she's driving me crazy and to try being quiet, that I'm not interested in her personal life.

I am systematically trying to downsize in my office. Getting rid of books I will never read again, and throwing out files. Feels very good.

Good morning,

Last day before some time off! I can't wait.

Josie, wow, they really provide everything for you, which is great. I would prefer staying in a hotel like Garance, but I bet all the fun and camaraderie goes on in the camp places. I'm with Garance, it would be nice to be able to tell the co-worker to stop talking but I know how hard that is.

Garance, did you have all the retirement celebrations? I bet it must be strange packing your office and tossing things etc.

Off to get ready, take care,

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, and Valerie--

This morning I did Gym Style Back, Shoulders, Biceps (49 min.).

The English dept. is throwing a party for me this Friday night. My sons will be there, plus several friends not in the English Dept. Then there's another dinner the night before Commencement on June 2 with the honorary degree recipients, so still a lot of hoopla.

Deb, I know you didn't think Donald was all that good, but I thought he was pretty athletic and did a lot of fancy stuff with the free style. I sort of thought Katherine would get it, but I grew tired of her teary-eyed humble pie every week. Thought she was looking for the pity vote. My favorite was William, but that's probably because my favorite female dancer is definitely Cheryl.

Things are certainly quiet here. It's "dead week" for the seniors, and everyone else is now gone.

I won't have my first vein closure until July 25 (they only do this once a month apparently) and then it will just be my right leg. My left leg in August.

Good morning,

Off for 5 whole days!!! We take Keegan to our friend to be groomed this morning, and then not sure what we will do the rest of the day. Maybe work in the yard. We have the stones being delivered but that's not until around 5:00.

Garance, it wasn't that I didn't think Donald was good, but for some reason, the only dance I liked a lot was the one with the 3 of them. That was awesome. I agree, Cheryl is my favorite female pro and Derrick and Mark are my favorite males. Their choreography is what makes their partners look good, and I think they are the good at bringing out the best in their students.

Is Valerie away?

Hi to Josie, and Joan,

Off to get started with the day.

Just a quick check- in to say I'm back and pooped! had a really good trip. It's only about 2.5 hours drive but it's another world. weather was lovely on saturday, campground was busy. Lots of people back country ski off the hwy in spring and tent camp in the campgrounds so it was full but not obnoxious since everyone is tired out and most are in tents so no issues with loudmouths, screaming children, or generators 3 things that can make camping hell.
Regardless, we hiking or biked or both every day. beautiful beautiful flowers and from mid day sunday all was deserted! huge difference in business between weekends and weekdays. Birdwatching was excellent too, lots of interesting spring birds. marathon cleanup after we got back and I'm off to yoga so more later.

I guess I'm not a fast walker or runner. on the treadmill I usually go 4.0 to 4.2 mph at a 2.5% grade. I can go a little faster if I reduce the grade but not much, so I keep the grade thinking I get a better calorie burn. I can go faster for shorter times but for consistent speed for 30 min that's about it.

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, and Valerie--

This morning I did Cardio Supersets (41 min.).

Went to apply for Medicare part B this morning. Now I have to choose a medi-gap plan.

Valerie, your trip sounds lovely. The birds are really making a racket here in the morning. Lucky I don't sleep too late.

I am getting a bit bored with my Cathe regimen, but hate to give it up because it's been such a good run. I need some new dvds. Maybe I will check out Collage and see if there are any new good ones.

Enjoy your days off, Deb! It sounds like you are more than ready for retirement.

Good morning,

up early and out for breakfast, and some food shopping. We stopped at a Price Rite ( not sure if this is a national chain or not) and they had hanging baskets, 2/$10. what a deal. I bought 6, 2 for me and 4 for my cousin.

we have the stones in the driveway and will be spreading them out once John gets back from the office. he had a emergency call. It never fails.

Valerie, 4.0-4.2 is a pretty fast walk, and at an incline, even harder. I could probably do that on a health club treadmill, but not mine. It must be calibrated differently or something.

Garance, let us know if you find anything good over at Collage.

Hi to Josie, & Joan, will check back later.

We are all so different... for me staying in hotels/motels is beyond difficult. stale stinky air, too warm, bedding that's too hot to sleep on, noise etc. I did it for 20 long years for my previous job. now, camping is not always perfect... but I usually sleep very well and I don't have to eat restaurant food, two huge bonuses for me. stinky campfires are a negative but we try to avoid them. sleeping in a big tent with a lot of others might not work well for me. I do fine in a small tent with DH but noise from other people will keep me awake. I never was a sound sleeper and as I have gotten older it is worse. need it really quiet.

wow josie, winning an ipad... how lucky you are! I don't think I've ever won anything though I usually enter contests anyway. just never ever win.

I let yesterday go with just yoga. my legs were pretty tired from all the riding and hiking but feel OK today so maybe will do High Reps. Haven't done in a while and I'm trying to get going with a mixture of weight workouts to do STS again.

Linda, I've heard of self rising flour but never saw it in a store. is it with the reg flour? the cobbler sounds lovely and with fresh berries showing up it wounds great.

Happy Friday Ladies,

I drove to San Diego yesterday to see my son and his family. I did not want to go on my trip without seeing him. The drive was not bad even though it took 3 hours to get there and the same to get back.

Valerie, by the time we get back from a ride and eat dinner we are very tired and the noise does not bother us. It is suggested that we bring ear plugs, but I did not need them. My DD and I share a tent and keep each other warm.

Tomorrow will be my last short ride before shipping my bike on the 30th. I can’t wait!!

Josie

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, and Valerie--

This morning I did AT (56 min.).

Valerie, yes, self-rising flour is in the same area as other baking needs.

My sons and daughter-in-law descended on us last night. DH was already fast asleep because the night before he was up around 2 A.M. loading 800 chickens and off to the slaughterhouse, which is quite a distance away. I was watching the first installment of So You Think You Can Dance, one of my favorite competitions. They are here for my party tonight which should be entertaining--about 70 people are coming.

Deb, that's a very good deal on hanging plants. I usually make my own using DH's soil mix and buying 3 little plants for each hanging one. In the past, when I have bought hanging plants, they just don't seem to last very long, and they are pretty expensive. If they had them at your price, I would probably buy them.

Sounds like you are all ready for the ride, Josie.

Happy Memorial Day weekend!
