Pentagenarians & Beyond W/B 5/17

Good morning & Happy Thursday!

We leave for our trip today, after packing a ton of stuff. Travelling with 2 dogs is worse than 2 kids. Crates, and all kinds of other stuff to remember. The picture session was great. They could not believe how well behaved the dogs were.

Judy, good job on the workouts, glad you are feeling better.

Josie, wow, you are so lucky with that tree...it could have totaled your car. Will you have another one planted there once it is all cleaned up? We have a huge Norway Maple in our front yard, and I can't imagine how it would be if it was gone. Yes, we all got in the pictures, she took a lot, of them.

Valerie, sounds like a great trip. As for moose, of course there has never been a "moose siting" here, but my co-workers that had to go back and forth to our Anchorage office said that moose are around there just like deer are here. Sometimes right in the middle of the road you are driving on.

Lynda, glad your FIL is doing better and able to get on a plane for home. No residual affects from the stroke? Assume he is mobile etc? Maybe one of those mini strokes...I forget what they are called at the moment.

Lori, have fun on the Cape. We drove to Provincetown once for a week at a B&B there. It was the weekend after Labor Day, and it was so beautiful, nice and quiet there.

Hi to Deb2, & Dawn,

The cabin has wifi, so I will drop in when I can.

Take care,

Hi Ladies,

Went for a 3 mile run this morning and will do an upper body workout later on with my DH. Karina is not coming today, so we are on our own.

Deb, have a wonderful vacation. Your comment about packing so much stuff for the dogs reminded me of how much we had to pack when I was growing up and our parents took us on a vacation. We had two station wagons, my dad drove one and my mom drove the other one, there was nine of us at that time. I felt sorry for my poor mom, because she had to carry pots and pans too :(

Lori, have a wonderful vacation too.

Valerie, glad that you had a good vacation.

I will be back later.

Josie

Hi everyone!

This morning I did Flex Train (56:36).

Deb, have a great trip! I think there are a lot of issues with FIL. Someone from the VNA and Elder Services will evaluate their condo. DH thinks there are a lot of problems--rugs that don't lie flat, toilets that are too low, step-in bathtubs, a carpeted stairway that seems designed for falls. They pay DH as a caretaker for the place when they are in Florida, and he used that money last year to do several things--railings, a ramp, etc. They have the money to do elder friendly improvements, but as DH says, they are very frugal. As I said, we are not sure how all of this will play out. If my FIL cannot golf or garden or read anymore, it will be terrible.

Josie, those vacations sound incredible! I never went on a family vacation because my father died when I was so young, but I do remember getting my boys packed up for the Jersey Shore every year, and it was always a bit crazy. Now there are so many electronic devices to keep kids amused on a long car trip, but not when my guys were little.

Lori, enjoy the Cape and I hope you have great weather!

Hi to Dawn, Deb2, Valerie, and Judy!

Hi everyone!

I guess I am the only one around for this vacation. This morning I did Cardio Supersets (41:30).

I hope everyone is having a good time. It might frost tonight here, so the hanging plants are coming in and I am covering my tender annuals.

FIL and MIL are in their condo, but not sure what's next. I think he will be checking in with his doctor here.

lywow,Josie you were lucky on that tree missing everything. that is a riot...TWO cars to hold everything? they were determined!
we didn't do vacations either. my parents never went anywhere and made sure us kids didn't either. we visited "lake cottages" family owned nearby but those were several hour trips. my first trip anywhere was when I was in 6th grade on a school class trip. parents were adamantly opposed and flatly refused to talk about it. it was my first overnight trip, and my last until I was about 18. I still don't know why they finally agreed to let me go. maybe a teacher contacted them? most of my friends went on trips or to summer camp. I had a girlfriend who never traveled either so we hung out together every summer. My parents eventually traveled a little but no idea why they were so reluctant. I've been making up for lost time every since.

I had a sick day yesterday. just not feeling good, but better today.
Lynda, hopefully the age related upgrades can be done without overwhelming expense. bath tubs can be the biggest issue. Hopefully he will recover enough not to need to go to assisted living. my mothers house has the same problems and remodels can be expensive and time consuming because they need an accessible bathroom while the main one gets remodeled not always quickly or inexpensively.

Moose are common in the a lot of areas and are a big issue if you hit one. I'm sure I've read about them being a problem on Alaska hwys and especially on train tracks in the winter. they seem to be expanding their range and moving in from Canada.. there are areas of wilderness and national forest with few roads or highways that connect to Canada so it's nice to see this happening.

I remember chicken manure being stinky but this is not smelly at all. It's dry and flaky so I don't think a dog would get any fun out of in rolling in it.. but I could be wrong. no question, some dogs like to get down and dirty with poop.

Everyone... enjoy the holiday weekend. we are not going anywhere.

We aren't going anywhere this weekend. Just getting caught up on things around the condo and maybe will get a bike ride or run in.

Hope everyone has a good holiday!

Judy

Good afternoon everyone from Sunny Cape Cod!

I just love it here! Yesterday before I left i did my last STS back and bis from Meso 1 then took chester for a walk. There is an indoor pool here which is so beautiful and surrounded by glass doors that open to get the fresh air in so you feel like you are outside. All the benefits and no I swam yesterday and today and will do many times while I am here.

Lynda...we watched GOT tonight. So sad. Hope your DH does well tomorrow at the market. Please keep us informed about your FIL. I will keep him in my thoughts and prayers.

We went on family vacations when we were younger i have four brothers and my mom packed us all in the station wagon and off we went. Usually it was pulling a pop up camper. Josie not sure how your parents survived a vacation with so many children!!!! Bless them!!!

I'll check in tomorrow. Hope everyone is enjoying the weekend!

Hi Ladies,

Ran this morning and will be doing PLB later on. We are going out to dinner tonight and tomorrow we are going to one of my nieces graduation party.

My mom was just happy to go anywhere when we were kids because she was cooped up most of the year taking care of us on her own. My dad was a cross country truck driver and was gone for long periods of time. My mom was so much fun, she took us swimming, the drive-in, the park and on snow days she would be outside playing with all of us.

Lori, I've never been to Cape Cod, but it sound amazing.

Valerie, my mom did not let us go away on trips with other people or summer camp. She was always worried that something would happen to us, but we did not miss it because she made it fun for us during the summer.

Deb, hope that you are having a good time.

Garance, my brothers and I would entertain each other on long trips. We also loved to read, so our mom would get us books and comic books to read on the road.

Hi to Judy, Dawn and DB2!
