Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 4/9/2023

Good morning and happy Easter. I did Morning Energy yoga this morning. Have a wonderful day everyone.

Happy Easter everyone. I did Ramped Up Total Body today. I love the variety of equipment and exercises, but that is a tough workout. I actually matched her in weights, though I ended up knocking a couple reps off for a few things, and I was sending Cathe rather unkind thoughts at times. LOL Going to be another nice day here.

Judy it's likely there are MSU students at the Apple Store here. Diane Sue, I'm sorry your store was so unhelpful. I rarely get new devices and generally get phones at Verizon, but the few times I've been to the store, I've been met at the door and checked in, and helped within a reasonable time frame. Did you let Apple know, because I doubt they'd be pleased with that level of customer service in their store.

Valerie it's not the same, but my Dad has to deal long distance with his brother in Seattle. He and his wife really need to be an assisted living situation. He's over 90 with a lot of health problems, and she is barely mobile. Yet some crazy breeder sold them an Australian Shepard/Doodle mix puppy who is needs a ton of exercise and gets none. Messes all over the floor, they have a tiny yard, can barely walk, and it bites him. I would, too! My cousin actually called the breeder behind his back and told her to not sell them a puppy, but she did it anyway. My Dad long ago reached he point of just listening to him ramble. We all just want someone to dognap the poor thing.

I have a friend that collects old cookbooks. Pre-mid 60's stuff. She's a librarian and when people donate them she gets first dibs. Awhile back she was posting some of the recipes and they are so gross.

Carolyn great job with the yoga.

Cathy that sad story is not much different from my sister. she insisted on replacing her deceased dog. got a young high energy dog from the humane society. my sister doesnt walk much. she had several dogs who never got much exercise because she has is a tiny fenced yard. the new dog lasted a less than a week. she opened the front door for a package from Amazon, dog ran out, run over in seconds. then she tried to blame the driver! I actually contacted amazon to try and prevent the poor guy from getting fired. after that mess she wanted a cat. I said get an adult whose personality is clear. but no she wanted a kitten. so got a kitten. the cat from hell! completely crazy, climbed up her pants legs, bit her and clawed everything. lasted 6 months getting worse as the cat got bigger and bolder. she got the humane society to pick it up. that ended the pet fascination. not good for either party.
that is terrible about your uncle. breeder was unethical. awful set up for the dog and for the uncle/aunt. completely inappropriate. hard to save us from ourselves.

old WW food was awful. my mother did WW a few times. food from the 50's- 60's wasnt very good. I used to eat meat but liver was a challenge. a widespread belief it was a good nutritious food. my mother used to make it regularly. OMG. the texture. jello was a mainstay. every vegetable was boiled to disintegration, floated in a cup of butter except she used margarine. must have been a generational thing. spam. pizza and pasta were weird "foreign" foods. when I moved out I never ate German food again.

we have gone to the apple store a few times. upgrade phones at Verizon unless costco expands their program. was a really slick smooth process at costco.
its a gut reaction facing someone with facial piercings, especially the tongue, nose rings. the last person we saw at apple had what looked like a christmas tree hanging off his nose with swinging bits and parts. different strokes and all, it was too much. what you do at home or out clubbing is not necessarily right for customer based retail.

I forget if I posted later yesterday but rode my mt bike around the neighborhood, couple miles with a big hill climb. about 30 minutes.

No workout today. It is my usual rest day. Tuesday will probably be a rest day as well as it is the ladies get together for games and breakfast. I went to church and when my husband gets up we will go get mulch and stuff that I need.

Judy, thanks for getting us started today.

Carolyn, nice work getting in Morning Energy today.

Cathy, nice work getting in Ramped Up Total Body today. It is beautiful outside today here as well. Yes, my husband asked for management. They still would not help. When he contacted Apple they got us another appointment and we got right in. It was a problem with my still under warranty ipad. They fixed it, but it should not have been such bad service.

Valerie, I cannot understand why people think that stuff all looks good. It makes me ill and I have to look away. It is the same with wait staff in restaurants. I can't look at them and then want to eat. It has gotten that way with the Applebees we usually frequent. I let my husband look at them and be friendly. They need to have a professional look in those types of business. If I go in a store and the person at the register looks like that I go to another register. I told my husband I kind of want to find another restaurant to frequent. As soon as our T Mobile service time is up we will go either AT&T or Verizon. I think my son and my daughter's families both use Verizon. Daughter's family all have kept their Apple phones and tablets. I am happy with Samsung so will not change.
I have seen a lot of articles lately about how good organ meets are for you and they have organ formulas in capsules. Supposedly adds B12 and things that people have a hard time getting enough of. I used to like liver and onions, but lost an appetite for it after my husband kept saying "you know what the liver does" . I read an article that sort of made sense as to why it would be good for you as the liver clears toxins, but I still cannot eat it. Same as eating anchovies. I read how good they are for you and thought I would try. After one dish that went in the garbage disposal with them in it, I never purchased again. My mother made liver a lot. I used to love sardines in mustard, but grew out of that after really looking at them.
People have to be responsible pet owners and able to care for and train pets or not have them. Sad for the animals.

Happy Easter! Today I did a 45 minute Peloton ride. I'll probably do a short strength training workout later tonight.

Carolyn-Great job with the Morning Energy yoga.

Cathy-Great job with Ramped Up Total Body. That looks like a really tough workout. Working at the Apple Store seems like a great part time job for a college student.

Valerie-Great job with your mountain bike ride.

Diane Sue-I hope you have a nice rest day.

This morning was Kickboxing Plus Core. It's really too bad, I'm lousy at making notes about workouts. LOL That one has some punching combos, but is mostly drills. Not that I didn't work up a good sweat, just not my preference.

Valerie our food growing up sounds a lot like yours. I will be forever thankful my parents disliked so many foods themselves that they never made us eat anything we didn't want. My Mother totally boiled every vegetable to death. Just looking at canned spinach made me shudder. And the smell of liver and onions and boiled cabbage was just awful. To this day my Dad won't believe us that not all Mexican food is spicy, and we didn't have pizza until I was in high school, somewhere around '75. It actually wasn't until I was around 40 that I could bring myself to try spinach. I still prefer fresh to cooked, but I can eat it now. My Mom started cooking for her family when she was quite young, and hated it. When TV dinners came out she was a huge fan. We ate a lot of TV dinners, fish sticks and pot pies. We were all glad my parents opted to not get another pet. And at this point, my sister boards her dog when she visits because she's afraid he'll trip them. They feed the birds, squirrels and chipmunks and spend a lot of time watching them instead. Great job getting the mountain bike ride in.

Piercings, Derek has no interest, but doesn't care as he's dated girls with piercings. Aliah only has single ears, but has tattoos. Nick OTOH has both ears and nose, but only small jewelry and no interest in tattoos. I found it hilarious that even after he'd been home twice to visit, and we'd done multiple FaceTimes with him, it was only a couple months ago that DH notice the nose piercing. Observation is not his strong point. Being so much older than most of their friends, classmates and teammates parents, I got used to a lot of it
years ago. Where I live though I rarely see anything very extreme.

Judy nice job with the Peloton ride.

Diane Sue I never ate organ meat even before I became vegan. Things like liver cleanse toxins, and that means that at the time the animal is killed all the toxins present anywhere in the animal, but especially in areas like the liver are still there. And even as a kid things like that were gross to me. I grew up with my grandparents having farms and my parents having grown up on farms, and if it wasn't for that culture, I probably would have eaten a lot less meat sooner. I was always happy my Dad didn't hunt, as even then I'd have drawn the line at wild animals. But then, even as a kid, I walked to a very different drummer than the rest of my family. LOL

wet again today so will do a spin later. plus therapy. takes me a good half hour now with more exercises. I am doing the stretches twice a day. yoga type stretches alternating with other things. seeing the doc again this week for another targeted injection that will be more specific and hopefully help more.

It is sad animals get into homes where they don't fit. a young high energy dog will get into trouble without a way to it burn off. probably will develop destructive habits for an outlet. my sister would have done fine with an older dog or an adult cat but no, wouldn't listen. she seems past the wanting -a-pet stage.

I don't even care if liver is the healthiest thing( I expect its not) in the world... not eating it. I had a lot of jewish friends and chicken livers were a popular dish on special occasions but I struggled with those. now anchovies are something I can enjoy.. not a lot of them. I used one to make seasoned breadcrumbs (NYT) that were very good. you could not identify exactly what was in there, but it was an anchovy mixed into the panko, garlic, olive oil. I found a can of anchovies in my cart accidentally, saw a recipe to try them in. DH would never knowingly eat an anchovy. or a sardine, tuna or salmon, but he liked the crumbs sprinkled on top of vegetables or pasta. I used to like anchovies on pizza but I'm the only person on the planet who does, so haven't had them in decades. might not enjoy them that way anymore. I'd be cautious and conservative using them because they add flavor but you don't know what that extra flavor actually is. I think they are often in Caesar dressing but I am stopped by the raw egg long before an anchovy.

ETA cathy we posted at the same time. our parents cooked the same way. the sad thing was they had lots of fresh foods but cooked the living hell out of everything and apparently liked the smell of cooked cabbage. canned spinach needs no comment!. funny that most of the foods I cant stand were things we had to eat as children. they were very meat centered. It pointed me toward vegetarian that I did for a long time. now I eat a little poultry and fish but still mainly vegies and grains. Parents also thought mexican food was spicy. then when they got old, started going to Taco Bell all the time. My father could just say "olive oil" with such disgust and distain that no chance for italian food. one thing I refuse totally is sushi. if you took a course in Parasitology, you would not either.

I dont even count ears as piercings! I had two sets of holes but the second set got punched when I was 50 something. very quickly developed allergy to nickel. cant wear any jewelry now except for rings on my hands that I remove at night. fine with most tats although some folks will regret their choices as they get older and things sag and fade. no way on bovine nose rings and dingle dangle ornaments.

This morning I did Step, Jump, and Pump, step only premix. That was 27 minutes and 176 calories burned. My average heart rate was 125 and maximum heart rate was 149. My husband had a medical appointment this morning which took a large portion of our day. Comcast is working on upgrades to the network and we are having intermittent internet and cable outages. Our internet just came back a few minutes ago.

I feel fortunate that I don’t have bad memories of the food that we ate growing up. Both my mother and grandmother were good cooks. It wasn’t always the food that we wanted but it was good. There was too much fried food which is common in the south, but that wasn’t every day. The only thing that I hate is canned vegetables! If we didn’t grow it it came from a can. As far as Weight Watchers goes, I have never eaten “weight watchers food” in all of my years of doing the program. My food choices have always been things that I wanted to eat and that my family would also eat.

Cathy, great job with Ramped Up Total Body and Kickboxing plus Core. The total body workout sounds like a hard one.

Valerie, that’s such a sad story about your sister and her pets. You are doing great with your therapy exercises.

Diane Sue, I hope that you enjoyed your rest day.

Judy, great job with the 45 minute Peloton ride.

Have a good day everyone.

Today I did CDorner Total Body Step and Strength 63 minutes, 213 calories, heart rate 110/152, 3,069. I finished with Perfect 30 timesaver mobility stretch that is 10 minutes and added stretches to help my ribs and back pain. This was 27 minutes, 45 calories. Total time was 90 minutes, 258 calories.
Total Body Step and Strength alternates 5 minutes of cardio with strength segments.
Step
12# dbs forward leaning lunge/row
8# dbs wide squat underhand wide to front raise
repeat on other side
step
dips or if can't do dips standing kickbacks which is what I did with 8# dbs
reverse lune 12# dbs
repeat left side
step
knee on step and 1 hand on step leg out in a dead bug stance arm out reverse fly 5# db
repeat on left side
abs- crunch/reverse curl/ crunch with reverse curl
leg drops
side bends 8# db

Judy, nice work getting the Peloton ride in. My rest day was nice and did not end up getting yard work in which was okay with me. We got to Lowes and they were closed for Easter. That made me happy anyway that some still honor Easter as a special day.

Cathy, good job on Kickboxing plus Core. Some of those workouts I have written up and stopping points if I have a favorite part of a workout that I want to do. I have always kept notes on workouts. I have not kept many of CDorner's unless I keep reusing a workout. I just keep them in my watch later on Youtube. I have so many folders and notebooks of workouts. I threw a lot away when we moved to downsize all of the extra paper stuff. The nice thing about Cathe's purchases is the worksheets and Workout manager. Helps save me a lot of work. I have all of Kelly Coffey typed up and in notebooks.
I got so much broccoli slaw so I made a curried shrimp noodle bowl that uses the broccoli slaw as the noodles. It is pretty easy and tastes good.

My grandfather had their family farm and my Dad had one when I was little. I will say while growing up we did have lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. My mother shopped and I cleaned and cut up all of the fresh stuff, so it was ready for use for meals. They either got meats from a farmer, or when we moved to the city my mother frequented a meat market. I have never been adverse to meat, but a lot of meat purchased now tastes different. I don't know if it is feed, or difference in processing. Boneless tastes different than cooked with bone in. Most purchased in grocers has not bones in it. It probably loses nutrients in the process. When some of the new packaged things like Kraft macaroni and cheese, Spam, and corned beef hash in cans showed up on store shelves they were on our table occasionally. But, still most things still stayed fresh. TV dinners are awful. Hardly anything in the package and the picture on the front looks much better than what is inside. Thankfully those things did not hit the dinner table. My Dad did not hunt, my husband has turned down people asking him to go hunting. He says he sees not need to go hunting if he is not going to eat it.

Valerie, now that you mention Caesar dressing and anchovies, I know I have eaten some that way in restaurants. Most were fine, but I did have one time that they were really obvious, and I couldn't eat the salad. They are supposed to have a lot healthy nutrition in them. The only sushi rolls I ever tried was some from Schwan's that I shared with my granddaughter. They stated on them that the fish was cooked. I have not used Schwans in a long time. I miss the large shrimp that I got from them that were cooked and had the tails already removed. It made it easy for recipes. Neither of us liked the taste though as we tried different types, and the dog got them. I have pierced ears and would not count that. It is the gages and face piercings that get me. Oh, and the tongue which seems really silly to me. More of a health hazard. Tats can be problematic in some places with jobs. I know here the police officers that are in the court rooms have to have their arms covered with a long sleeve shirt under their short sleeve uniform shirt to hide tats if they have them. I wouldn't expect to go to a doctor with tats all over themselves either. I have seen people trying to get their tats removed. Not all successfully.

Carolyn, nice work with Step Jump and Pump Step only premix. That was always a favorite for me for so long. That or the mix with the light weights mixed in. Our power went out for a bit yesterday. No apparent reason though. We keep trying to figure out why when we are watching shows they will suddenly get so loud we are about blasted out of the house, or we have the tv full blast and you can barel hear what is being said. I hate canned vegetables, but I can eat some canned beets if I want to add them to salad or something. Whole Foods sells some already cooked whole beets in packages that taste like fresh cooked I have purchased. They sure are messy, but when I cook them I use the Instant Pot now and the peel comes off pretty easily.

Today was Upper Body Bliss. Bliss would not have been my choice of wording. LOL A lot of moves in this one used the mat, and when Cathe isn't doing the workout and just instructing she seems to lose perspective for when a little break might be nice. LOL It is a good workout. I couldn't go heavy because of the number of reps and the tempo she used. Another nice day here today. Derek had a one time 70+ degree day yesterday and he was stuck in classes and work. Lots of pics from Marquette of people at the beach, in swim suits, out on the rocks. And sure it might be 72, but that water is NOT!

Valerie I don't think if my Dad was starving and Taco Bell was the only alternative he would go! At this point, my Dad does all the cooking, and he always did his own lunches for work, and he would sometimes bake things. The other thing my Mom got from having to cook when she was so young, was coffee. She started drinking it around 10, and to this day the woman drinks 4 cups with the last in the evening. And always black. And yet, I can't drink caffeinated tea after noon or it affects my sleep. By the time, I was aware, her Dad did a lot of the cooking. Her Mother was famous for just leaving leftovers on the counter. It's amazing they never got serious food poisoning, but maybe their bodies acclimated to it.

Carolyn the step from SJP has always been one of my favorites. I rarely ever have done the whole thing.

Diane Sue my grandparents both had large gardens, and my parents did, too, when I was young, but what they did to those vegetables left a lot to be desired. There were fresh veggies to have with the cooked stuff at least. I tried having a garden, but it turns out my true talent is growing weeds. My brother has a true green thumb, and has beautiful gardens, and he can cook. Plus he got the nice legs. All of which is very unfair.

Did my spin yesterday, therapy, and several sets of tricep/ bicep work. and x train abs. after all the PT, cathe abs feel easy.

my great uncle had what we called a truck farm. supplied us with fresh eggs and a lot of vegetables. we grew tomatoes. unfortunately fresh vegetables get destroyed when over cooked. they were decent cooks and wonderful bakers but I didn't like the flavors. it was what people cooked then. lots of meat loaf, beef, ham, pork, potatoes. my mother made desserts constantly. they were very good but she didn't cook basic food. my father didnt like seasoning or variety, so it was a no-win set up. my grandmother did a lot of it. she was German and never met a stick of butter or meat fat she didnt like. all of a sudden they started going to taco bell like it was a 5 star restaurant after disparaging "mexican" food for decades.
cathy thats funny about leftovers. my SIL lets things sit out like that. I remember a turkey still sitting on the countertop 2 days later. her DH does most of the cooking now, he's better about refrigerating things. I love love coffee but only one cup of real stuff, and decafe after morning if I have any.

My DH had a small self made tattoo on his forearm he got removed long ago. it was not a simple process. tats will go out of style eventually. most will have to live with what they have. what looks "hot" when you're 20 may not be at 50. my ears piercings closed up quickly. I loved earrings. hard to let it go. I tried all known solutions to contact. ear lobes got hot, red, itchy in half an hour no matter what I did. not worth it.

we turned out to be good gardeners. raise a a lot of vegies. climate, sun exposure, soil quality decides how it turns out. some locations or crops aren't worth it. usually you get more than you can use, and things come all at once. we go from nothing to WAY too much quickly. we enjoy it. even staggering plant times we go from nothing to too much. all at once there is broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, green beans zucchini tomatoes, beets, chard, kale. we stopped growing some things because it was overwhelming. so many people dont cook anymore its hard to even give things away. I dont mean baseball bat size zucchini!

Today I did Gym Style Back, Shoulders, and Biceps timesaver. My time was 42 minutes with 211 calories burned. My average heart rate was 121 and maximum heart rate was 166.

Diane Sue, nice job with CDorner Total Body Step and Strength, and P30 Mobility stretch.

Cathy, nice job with Upper Body Bliss. I can’t seem to grow anything but small pots of herbs. I was the child who spent time cooking what the others grew.

Valerie, great job with spinning, therapy exercises, and XTrain abs. I’m amazed at the way people will leave food sitting out on the counter. I’m obsessive about refrigerating everything as soon as possible. I love fresh vegetables, especially the ones that you listed. I have the same problem wearing earrings in my pierced ears. My ears immediately turn red and itchy. I use to wear earrings every day, but I have given up on them.

Hello to Judy.

carolyn I tried coating the posts and earring backs with different coatings, tried wearing only wires, but nothing helped at all. had the original holes punched when I was about 16 and had never had a problem until I had the second holes punched. in a short time it was a problem. I didnt get new earrings, wearing same ones that had always been fine. Ive read thi is a mnickel allergy buty never had it confirmed I wrestled with it for a long time, on and off for years, but the irritation and itching lasted at least a week. clearly not workable. I started getting gray marking on my skin under other metal, like a necklace or watches. switched to plastic, leather, velcro, only wore minimal jewelry from then on, I had some bead necklaces that were ok. I still can wear rings but take them off at night.

did elliptical and therapy yesterday, a busy errand day. this morning we are going to mt bike since its not raining. we grow lettuce and snap peas and corn. the corn is a big deal for us. Love fresh corn. I do NOT love what's sold in stores now. its "supersweet" and tastes awful to me. we used to buy local corn but they all switched to supersweet too. I think its inedible, so our corn crop gets a lot of energy.

Did Booty Burn today. Body weight, firewalker loop and green fabric loop. Pulled out the capris, tank and T-shirt for today as we will be pushing 80. Tomorrow, too and then we start back down to normal spring temps.

Valerie it doesn't matter what I do, my ear piercings don't close. I can go a year, and I may have to work a bit to get them through the first time, but they still open up. I pretty much just keep studs in these days. I'm reading the last book Jack LaLanne wrote. He talks about growing up on his grandpa's farm and they grew produce and took it to town to sell, so they could basically buy junk. Candy, white flour... It was crazy how many people would do that kind of thing. If they didn't boil stuff to death, they salted it to death or added crazy amounts of sugar. I remember my grandma's strawberries, from the garden, that she would mash up to use for strawberry shortcake and I swear it was equal parts sugar and strawberries. Great job with the spin, therapy, biceps/triceps and abs.

Diane Sue, I'm envious of your ability to keep notes. That type of thing has eluded me my whole life, diaries, journals, calendars...I have never been able to keep them up. I have a nice fitness journal I like, and write now it's done in pencil, and I just cross out workouts I change, and every couple days I catch up whether or not I've done the things I meant to do this month. Meals etc. are not happening at the moment. Sigh

Carolyn great job with Gym Style Back, Shoulders, and Biceps timesaver.

Hi Judy!

Today I did Cardio Quick Fix, workout two. That was 29 minutes and 222 calories burned. My average heart rate was 137 and maximum heart rate was 161.

Valerie, nice job with the elliptical and therapy exercises. Do the therapy exercises target your hip?

Cathy, nice job with Booty Burn.

Hello to Diane Sue and Judy.

I thought that I posted this two hours ago! Apparently I forgot to hit the button.

did our mt bike this morning and it was excellent. about 7 miles. sunny! 37 degrees to start but didn't feel that cold. my timer didnt start but it was about an hour and a half. its still a troublesome area because of areas of too big rocks. the rocks are loose and too large to ride through without serious braking and slowly working through. not something you can fly through at 20 mph! it was better than last time we rode it but lots of room for improvement yet.
I get another injection tomorrow so hoping for some improvement. will need a day or two off following that.

carolyn, the exercises target core, thigh, butt. a lot of stretches focus on lower back, butt\thigh. I seem to be contracting the lower back muscles too much and causing the backache ( more complicated than that) but there are some structural problems that aren't going away. I'm still doing exercises that helped me get better after the knee injury late last fall. this ends up being a generous half hour to 45 min depending. I dont do every one every day or I would never get off the floor. I do the PT program and add in effective ones from older PT programs.

cathy that is so true!. the sweetness level that was "normal" was incredible. everything was canned in heavy syrup. extremely sweet cereals. we dumped sugar on everything. our strawberries were like that too, 1:1 ratio of berries to sugar. I moved out, realized I would end up looking like them if I ate like that, and learned to cook.

Today I did CDorner 40 Minute Fat Burning Kickboxing and Dance, 40 minutes, 229 calories, heart rate 140/164, 3,637 steps. I then did Ice Chiseled Upper Body Timesaver #3 Standing Only, 26 minutes, 75 calories. I finished off with CDorner Mobility Flow from yesterday stopping after 16 minutes as I ran out of time for the full 30. This was 33 calories burned. Total time was 82 minutes, 337 calories, 4,442 steps. I had another bad night with sleep. I tried to go back to sleep this morning, but it was just not happening.
No workout yesterday. I went to the game day with my ladies group and took the day off.

Chiseled Upper Body Standing
swinging military prerss 5# dbs 12 reps
trilpe dead row / triple upright row / shrug 12# dbs dropping to 10's
windmills 3# dbs
hammer curl/clutch curl 10# dbs
overhead press / overhead extension 8# dbs
forward tilt bent arm lateral raise 8# dbs
rotational rows 12# dbs 2 sets
discus throw 5# dbs 12 each side 2 times

Cathy, great job with the Upper Body Bliss workout. Cathe really gets you when she does a lot of reps. I pick out heavier weights and when I realize there is a lot of pulses, holds and reps I am soon reaching for something lighter. Also nice work on the body weight and bands lower body workout today.
I have to limit myself to two cups of coffee in the morning and the rest of the day is either decaf which I like to make as cold brew with almond milk and maybe a bottle of kombucha tea which I think has some caffeine. Otherwise, I drink lots of water. Drinking caffeine in the afternoon will usually keep me awake at night.
I have an agenda book with enough space to write down workout info and it has a place for things I need to get done during the week as well as calendar. I keep a journal notebook in the workout room to jot down the workout if it is new. Meal planning comes and goes. I have stocked up on some things for recipes I want to do. I have to cook when I buy a lot of fresh veggies so they do not go to waste. So I make dishes that I can freeze as my husband will not eat them.

Carolyn, nice work on Gym Style Back, shoulders, and biceps yesterday and Cardio Quick Fix workout 2 today.

Valerie, nice work getting in the physical therapy work, triceps and biceps and X Train abs and bike ride to today. There are not many fresh vegetables or fruits from the grocery store that tastes like fresh picked and ripe. I threw out apples today because I had to buy a whole bag from Walmart to get pink lady apples. When they arrived, they were dinky and mostly green with no flavor. I have a hard time ordering eggplant as it seems none of the shoppers no how to pick a decent one or something. I have a pasta recipe that I like that I use chickpea pasta for, and it has eggplant in it. I have had to cut away large parts of the eggplant. Sometimes I get fairly fresh products from Whole Foods as they do get some locally. The local baby kale I get from there is from here and called scissortail after state bird.
Now that it was mentioned I do remember my grandmother and mother canning things with sugar and putting sugar on the strawberries. Although my mother generally froze everything. Fruit was frozen to make pies with later on, veggies were frozen. She did not can a lot so I guess that is why I have always loved fresh or frozen vegetables over canned. Remember when it seemed everyone made those Harvard beets that were extra sweet and the carrots with sugar in them. I always hated it. Potato salad with sweet pickles and salad dressing. I do not mind a good potato salad, but it would not be what most people eat. Same with sugary coleslaw.

I still throw in some of my PT moves when I work out for the shoulder. I found some stuff on YouTube that I tried to help with my rib cage pain. I still think it is probably costochondritis and will talk to my doctors when I go the end of the month. I am not sure if I should talk to the arthritis doctor or the primary when I see her a week later. I scheduled the mammogram for before both so I can have that info when I go to the doctor. This pain hurts up to the sternum and wraps around to my back. They were discussing the same thing on YouTube and I have read on medical sites like Cleveland Clinic. I just cannot find anything else that sounds like it.

Hi to Judy

This morning I did Gym Style Chest and Triceps timesaver. That was 40 minutes and 213 calories burned. My average heart rate was 122 and maximum heart rate was 149. I had forgotten how good the Gym Style workouts are. I’m enjoying the straight forward weight training.

Valerie, great job with the mountain biking. Those therapy exercises remind me why I need to do Cathe’s lower body mat work. I hope that the injection continues to help you.

Diane Sue, great job with CDorner Fat Burning Kickboxing and Dance, Chiseled Upper Body timesaver, and CDorner Mobility Flow.

Hello to Judy and Cathy.

Rest day today. Injection went fine.

I didnt look this up but if I remember right, the heavy amounts of sugar were used as a way to preserve fruit. sugar, salt, and acid all work to preserve vegetables/ fruit. in times past, it was the only way to keep things. freezing was not as accessible as it is now. fresh vegies can't be frozen directly. they have to be cooked a bit, cooled quickly, and then frozen. even then not everything works well and texture goes bye bye along with flavor. I've tried home freezing but commercial equipment does it better. vegetables have a lot of water content. freezing damages the cell walls, the liquid and flavor leak out and whats left is NOT fresh. my grandmother didnt have refrigeration until she was an adult. they had ice boxes! they ate a lot of potatoes and rutabagas. meat and sausage. apples left from the late summer harvest. oranges from florida if they were lucky.
jelly and jam were developed as a way to save wonderful fruit flavor (without spoiling) for a long time. otherwise, how long does a strawberry last? a few days? same with sugar and vinegar for pickles to preserve cucumbers. techniques developed for food preservation were essential back, then but it doesn't mean things always tasted as good as what's available now. even when I was a child there were very few products available during the winter in the midwest. things that lasted in root cellars! now we are so used to raspberries in january we forget winter used to mean a few apples or bananas ( not sure where they came from) if you were lucky. I think people got used to over sweetened fruit because that helped preserve the flavor and texture and crops were not flown around during all seasons.

Diane sue maybe you have mentioned this before, but how come you dont go to the store yourself? not being snarky here, but I personally do a much better job picking what I want than a store "shopper". even when covid was running wild I always did shopping. I often decide what to buy by what looks good the day I shop.
